California Governor Gavin Newsom‚ who is considered a rising star in the Democrat Party‚ is under fire after a report this week revealed that he pushed for a special carveout in the state’s new $20 minimum wage law that affects businesses owned by one of his top political allies and donors. Bloomberg News reported that billionaire Greg Flynn was getting a “new boost” after his chain of Panera Bread locations were exempted from a new law that forces fast food restaurants to increase their minimum wage from $16 to $20 per hour. Flynn is the largest “restaurant franchisee in the US‚ if not the world‚” the report added. Panera Bread was spared from the law because it offered “unusual exemption for chains that bake bread and sell it as a standalone item.” The report states that Newsom “pushed for that break.” The report showed the numerous connections that the two men have‚ including going to the same high school‚ Flynn donating significant sums of money to Newsom’s political campaigns‚ Flynn allegedly bragging about his easy access to Newsom‚ and Flynn buying a resort managed by a company that Newsom owned. Newsom and his office refused to disclose details about how they decided to create the carveout that benefited Newsom’s donor and only claimed that it was the “result of countless hours of negotiations with dozens of stakeholders” and was “part of the sausage-making” in politics. The report noted that Flynn‚ who has also been involved in “business dealings” with the governor‚ would not respond to questions about his connections to Newsom. Panera Bread also would not respond to requests for comment‚ according to Bloomberg. The report said that he “urged the governor’s top aides to reconsider whether fast-casual chains such as Panera should be classified as fast food‚” which ultimately went nowhere. “The Service Employees International Union‚ a labor group that was the driving force behind the bill‚ decided to accept a narrower carve-out as the talks progressed — one that would only apply to restaurants operating bakeries‚” the report added. “That position was adopted as a means of winning the governor’s support for the legislation‚ said a person with knowledge of the discussions. The rationale was the governor’s longstanding relationship with a Panera franchisee‚ the person said.” The report highlighted multiple examples of major entities in the fast food industry who were puzzled about the special carve out and who also said that law was a “devastating financial blow” to businesses. Flynn owns thousands of restaurants‚ including Applebee’s‚ Pizza Hut‚ Taco Bell‚ Wendy’s‚ Panera Bread‚ and more. The GOP-led House is moving ahead with plans to hold Secretary of State Antony Blinken in contempt of Congress in a dispute over documents related to the Biden administration‘s withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2021. Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) announced on Thursday his panel will consider a resolution that recommends the House find Blinken in contempt of Congress for his alleged refusal to comply with a subpoena issued in July. A markup session is scheduled to take place on March 7. “It has been nearly 14 months since we first requested these documents that are critical to our investigation in the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan‚” McCaul said in a statement. “The ball is in the secretary’s court – if he wants to avoid being the first Secretary of State in history to be held in contempt of Congress‚ he can provide these documents.” McCaul noted in a letter on Monday that his panel was ready to hold Blinken in contempt of Congress if the State Department did not provide requested documents‚ particularly interview notes used to draft the After-Action Review on the Afghanistan withdrawal‚ after “countless” accommodations. A Guatemalan national in the country illegally was arrested by Utah police on Monday for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl‚ according to police records obtained by The Daily Wire. Twenty-six-year-old Jonathan Estuardo Ruano Garcia is being held in the Utah County jail‚ and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) placed a detainer on him‚ the sheriff’s office told The Daily Wire. Police documents said that on Sunday night‚ a mother returned to her apartment around 11:15 p.m.‚ where her daughter was home alone. On the way in‚ she “observed an adult male leaving her apartment. The mother said the male made eye contact but then quickly walked away.” When she entered the apartment‚ she found her daughter completely naked in the hallway‚ and “the 11-year-old girl told her mother that a male she met on the internet came to the apartment and had sex with her‚” the police report said. Police used the girl’s social media history to identify Ruano Garcia‚ and quickly located him at his home. “Ruano Garcia admitted that he put his penis in her vagina and had sex with the 11 year old for 20-30 min‚” the police report said‚ and claimed he believed the girl was 13 or 14. He said he met her at a soccer game and began chatting with her online. “Ruano Garcia admitted that the chats he had with the victim turned sexual and he sent naked photos of his penis on multiple occasions‚” the police report said. Ruano Garcia was arrested for three felonies: the rape of a child‚ enticing a minor‚ and forgery. The 8-year-old boy would “100%” be alive today if the government had deported Karmjit Singh after his first conviction‚ his father told The Daily Wire. In Louisiana‚ an illegal was arrested Sunday for allegedly raping a 14-year-old and stabbing someone in the face. Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley said that illegal immigrants are hard to police because “Lack of access to data‚ false identification and language barriers put local law enforcement at a huge disadvantage. We cannot verify if an illegal alien is giving correct information as it pertains to names and date of births. Special counsel Jack Smith does not want potential jurors to be asked how they voted in the 2020 presidential election — but he does want the court to ask them whether or not they feel that President Joe Biden’s Justice Department has treated former President Donald Trump “fairly.” According to a report published Thursday by The Washington Examiner‚ attorneys for the former president had called for jurors to be asked about their political party affiliations in addition to whether or not they cast a vote in 2020. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon asked for both Smith’s team and Trump’s to submit a jury questionnaire — which would allow the court to pre-screen potential jurors and rule out those who could not view the case in an objective manner — by Wednesday‚ and it was immediately clear that the two sides were at loggerheads over a few of the possible questions. Among the questions that the special counsel and his team objected to were the following: Are you registered to vote? If you answered “yes” to the prior question‚ are you registered with a particular party affiliation? Did you vote in the 2020 presidential election? Smith’s team also nixed a question regarding whether or not potential jurors held a negative view of politicians‚ but agreed along with the Trump team to go ahead with questions about whether they held negative opinions of police officers‚ the FBI‚ or judges and other court officers. Lieutenant Colonel Bree Fram‚ an engineer with the United States Space Force and activist for transgenderism in the military‚ spoke at the National Character and Leadership Symposium‚ the theme of which was “Embrace Culture‚ Empower People.” The military official states that he is a co-leader of the Department of the Air Force LGBTQ+ Initiatives Team‚ which he says is “dedicated to eliminating barriers to LGBTQ+ military service in the Air and Space Force.” Fram was introduced at the Air Force Academy event as “one of the highest-ranking out transgender officers in the United States military” and a “featured speaker on leadership‚ diversity‚ and inclusion.” He is also an activist on behalf of transgenderism‚ previously serving as the president of SPARTA‚ “a non-profit that advocates and educates about transgender military service.” “Inclusion takes action‚ inclusion requires asking‚ inclusion requires understanding‚ and it is more work‚ it is a lot more work for a leader but I need you to be willing to do it‚” Fram said to the crowd while wearing a patch on his uniform bearing a rainbow flag. “In the future‚ we are going to fight and win war with brain power‚ and if those brains happen to be in a trans body … you should want them serving alongside you.
