Bangladesh court takes a stand against elephant cruelty‚ banning wild adoptions

On February 25‚ a Bangladeshi court made a landmark decision prohibiting the adoption of wild elephants. Animal rights organizations have welcomed this judgment as a “landmark” step toward ending cruelty to Asian elephants. Suspending licenses: a necessary step Rights organizations celebrate the high court’s decision to revoke permits‚ effectively ending the torture endured by captive Asian elephants under the premise of training. Mr. Amit Das Gupta‚ Deputy Attorney General of Bangladesh‚ emphasized the extent of the order‚ noting‚ “The high court today suspended all licenses for the captive rearing of elephants.” From majestic to critically endangered: Bangladesh’s elephant dilemma Bangladesh was once a key habitat for Asian elephants‚ but their population has plummeted due to poaching and habitat destruction‚ resulting in their critically endangered status. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature‚ Bangladesh has almost 100 captive Asian elephants‚ which is about half the number found in the wild. Exploitation exposed: abuses in captivity The forestry department previously awarded captive elephant licenses to logging and circus organizations. However‚ it was discovered that these wonderful creatures were being exploited‚ with behaviors such as dragging tree trunks‚ begging‚ and even participating in street extortion‚ which was a clear violation of the license restrictions. End of hadani: a victory for animal activists Animal rights groups‚ notably Mr. Rakibul Haque Emil‚ the head of Bangladesh’s People for Animal Welfare (PAW) Foundation‚ consider the suspension as a crucial win. Mr. Emil emphasized the cruel training‚ known as hadani‚ that these elephants receive: “In the name of training elephants‚ private licensees… brutally separate elephant calves from their mother‚ shackle them for months‚ and then torture them to teach tricks.” The road ahead The situation of caged elephants received attention in May 2023‚ when a baby elephant employed for street begging was cruelly killed by a train. Some elephants are painted and forced to perform feats on the streets for money. This ruling represents a glimpse of hope‚ maybe putting a stop to such terrible acts. Mr. Emil responded to the court’s decision by confirming efforts to organize assistance for captive elephant rehabilitation. Drawing inspiration from successful initiatives in countries like Thailand and Nepal‚ he stated‚ “Several countries in Asia have found success in rehabilitating captive elephants. We shall do it here.”The post Bangladesh court takes a stand against elephant cruelty‚ banning wild adoptions first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

$1 billion donation changes lives of Albert Einstein College of Medicine students

Ruth Gottesman‚ a former Albert Einstein College of Medicine professor and widow of Wall Street financier David ‘Sandy’ Gottesman‚ announced an unprecedented $1 billion commitment to the Bronx-based college. This groundbreaking contribution eliminates tuition costs for four-year students and guarantees a debt-free education for aspiring medical professionals. A billion-dollar game changer Gottesman’s generosity has a significant impact on ambitious medical students such as Samuel Woo. Woo‚ who had been grappling with the prospect of mounting student debt‚ responded to the announcement: “I was definitely very emotional and it changes a lot… I can afford to pursue my dream of providing medical services to people living on the streets.” Jade Andrade‚ another first-year student‚ shared Woo’s emotions‚ calling the announcement a “big wave of relief” for herself and her classmates. Breaking financial barriers Gottesman’s generosity is significant for more than just financial reasons. It constitutes a significant step toward removing barriers to medical education for low-income and immigrant students. Woo emphasized the impact on aspiring doctors from marginalized backgrounds: “I’m hoping that the free tuition helps alleviate some of the pressure of those students and encourages them to think of medicine as… an acceptable field.” Andrade‚ reflecting on her immigrant upbringing‚ highlighted the liberating effect of the donation: “Growing up in an immigrant household… there are very few life decisions that you make without thinking of the financial aspects… But once you remove the financial burden: ‘Anyone can dream bigger.'” Shaping the future of medicine The donation not only solves urgent financial issues but also hopes to impact the future of medicine by encouraging a wide pool of applicants. School authorities believe that providing free tuition will inspire more aspiring doctors from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in medicine. Compared to other large donations to medical institutions‚ Gottesman’s contribution is very significant. Institutions such as NYU Grossman School of Medicine and UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine have also received significant donations aimed at reducing student debt and increasing access to medical education. A legacy of generosity Ruth Gottesman’s humanitarian deed demonstrates the importance of financial privilege in creating chances for higher education. Gottesman’s generosity‚ inspired by her late husband’s legacy‚ guarantees that future generations of medical professionals have the tools they require to follow their passion. As Samuel Woo shared the news with his mother‚ he recognized the profound impact of Gottesman’s generosity: “I feel like she asked me a bunch of questions because that’s what immigrant parents do… But afterward‚ when I clarified I’m not going to pay for tuition anymore‚ she was very happy.”The post $1 billion donation changes lives of Albert Einstein College of Medicine students first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

Is the Claim 'No Harm Will Overcome Us' in Psalm 91 True?

For many believers‚ the Bible‚ particularly Psalm 91‚ provides them protection. God’s promises of refuge amidst danger provide Christians with a spiritual security blanket to wrap themselves up against the evils of a broken world.

Woman‚ 34‚ entices Florida man‚ 73‚ to her home for romantic date only for him to be pummeled by her ex-boyfriend in planned robbery: Police

An elderly Florida man fell victim to a prearranged trap planned by a 34-year-old woman who set him up to be robbed by her ex-boyfriend‚ according to police. Chelsea Wright‚ 34‚ and Andrew Marks‚ 33‚ were arrested by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. The pair were charged with robbery with a weapon and aggravated battery on a victim over the age of 65.Just before 5 a.m. on Feb. 22‚ a 73-year-old Florida man appeared at a local hospital. He needed to be treated for numerous injuries to his head‚ torso‚ and arms‚ with significant lacerations to his head that required staples‚ and his eye swollen shut. The elderly man informed detectives that he had been battered with a metal object by a man in the Plantation Pines neighborhood. He said that his wallet had been stolen by the unidentified man. During the investigation‚ police learned that the elderly man had met the 34-year-old Wright at a Daytona Beach bar. She reportedly invited the 73-year-old man back to her home for a romantic date. He allegedly followed Wright to her home in separate vehicles. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said in a Saturday press release‚ "At one point on the drive‚ Wright stopped to pick up someone from the side of the road. She continued driving‚ with the victim following‚ then stopped and dropped off her passenger near a home. The victim then got out of his car and approached Wright’s vehicle."That's when police suspect Marks ambushed the elderly Florida man and pummeled the 73-year-old with a metal object. The victim claimed that his attacker repeatedly beat him even as he fell to the ground and took cover in the fetal position. The assailant allegedly stole the man's wallet and fled the crime scene‚ as did Wright. The elderly man was left bleeding on the ground.Police reportedly began conducting surveillance on Wright and subsequently pulled the 34-year-old woman on a traffic infraction. Officers allegedly found narcotics in her vehicle and took her into custody on drug charges as well as violations of her probation.During interrogations‚ Wright claimed her date was attacked by an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s disease‚ who she picked up on the side of the road.Law enforcement later discovered text messages between Wright and her ex-boyfriend planning to rob the elderly man‚ according to authorities. On Friday‚ Marks was arrested. Both suspects remain in custody.Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors‚ sign up for our newsletters‚ and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!
