GOP Senators Warn Dems May ‘Dispense With’ Mayorkas Impeachment Articles

Democrats who control the Senate may try to quickly discard the impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the border crisis‚ a group of GOP senators said on Tuesday. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and a dozen Republican colleagues sent a letter to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stressing that it is “imperative that the Senate Republican conference prepare to fully engage our Constitutional duty and hold a trial.” Briefings by McConnell’s staff indicate Senate Democrats “intend to dispense with the articles of impeachment by simply tabling both individually‚” the letter said. “This is an action rarely contemplated and never taken by the U.S. Senate in the history of our Republic.” GOP leadership must push for an impeachment trial for DHS Secretary Mayorkas. We cannot allow Chuck Schumer to sweep the Biden administration’s border invasion under the rug. pic.twitter.com/qg1EFCdoF3 — Mike Lee (@SenMikeLee) February 20‚ 2024 Last week‚ House lawmakers narrowly passed two articles of impeachment that accuse Mayorkas of “willfully and systemically” refusing to comply with federal immigration laws and the other alleged he “breached the public trust” with false statements and obstructing lawful oversight of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the House impeachment managers “will present the articles of impeachment to the Senate following the state work period‚” which means a trial could start next week. Schumer’s team added that senators “will be sworn in as jurors in the trial the next day” and Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray (D-WA) will preside. A two-thirds vote is required for a conviction in the Senate‚ which would lead to removal from office. But the articles may not make it far with a motion to table‚ which according to the Senate glossary is “a proposal to set aside any pending question. Used to dispose of a question the Chamber does not want to consider further. Agreement to the motion is equivalent to defeating the question tabled.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Lee and his colleagues ended the letter by calling on McConnell to “join us in our efforts to jettison this approach by Democrats to shirk their Constitutional duty‚ ensure that the Senate conducts a proper trial‚ and that every Senator‚ Republican and Democrat‚ adjudicate this matter when the Senate returns.”

Student Arrested After 2 Bodies Found in University Of Colorado Dorm

A University of Colorado-Colorado Springs student was arrested Monday morning after authorities found the bodies of two individuals in a dorm on campus. Nicholas Jordan‚ 25‚ has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of 26-year-old Celie Rain Montgomery and 24-year-old Samuel Knopp‚ the Associated Press reported. Knopp was a student studying music at UCCS‚ but Montgomery was not currently enrolled. On Friday around 6 a.m.‚ the UCCS Police Department received a report of shots fired at the Crestone House‚ a campus dorm‚ the Colorado Springs Police Department said on X. Police found the room where the shots had originated and discovered the bodies of two adults‚ one male and one female. Later that evening‚ after an investigation‚ the CSPD Homicide Unit obtained an arrest warrant for Jordan‚ a student at the university originally from Detroit‚ Michigan. Police then began searching for Jordan while an autopsy was performed on the two victims’ bodies at the El Paso County Coroner’s Office. Each student was shot‚ but the coroner’s office has yet to determine the exact cause and manner of death. On Monday morning just before 8 a.m.‚ the CSPD’s Motor Vehicle Theft Unit located Jordan in a vehicle. Nearly an hour later‚ the Tactical Enforcement Unit responded and took him into custody without incident. “It was really a smooth arrest‚” Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez said‚ according to CBS News Colorado. Jordan reportedly knew the victims‚ and the CSPD emphasized that the crime was “not a random attack against the school or other students at the university.” UCCS held a “healing march” on Monday afternoon‚ with university chancellor Jennifer Sobanet‚ student body president Axel Brown‚ and UCCS Police Chief Dewayne McCarver addressing the crowd‚ CBS reported. “Healing will take time. Rebuilding the trust and safety of our campus will take time‚” Sobanet said‚ according to the outlet. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP “We’re all in this together. I just know he’d be happy to see this‚” said Haden Gillespie‚ who was Knopp’s roommate. “Of course‚ you have that feeling of being overwhelmed‚” student body president Brown said. “These kinds of tragedies big or small‚ definitely hit all around the world. It always happens. But we don’t really feel it until it hits our atmosphere‚ our circle‚” junior Nissi Paugio said at the event‚ according to CBS.

Nevada Launches Investigation After Residents Told Their Ballot Had Been Counted When They Hadn’t Voted

The Nevada Secretary of State’s Office launched an investigation after some residents were told that their votes had been counted in the recent primary election despite the fact that they had not voted. After local outlets reported the news on Sunday‚ state officials looked into the issue and said that it had been caused by a “technical” problem and that the irregularities had to do with how county data was uploaded to a state database.  “The issue was as follows: on a nightly basis‚ each county uploads their voter registration data to the Secretary of State’s database‚ which executes code to create the single statewide voter registration file that users see when they log into vote.nv.gov. The legacy systems used by a number of the counties require additional steps be taken to ensure that voters who did not return their ballot do not have vote history; some of those steps were not taken‚ which resulted in inaccurate data‚” a statement from the office of Democrat Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar said on Monday.  Aguilar’s office said that all the data in the system should be correct within two days. The statement said that the errors did not affect the counting in the primary‚ which President Joe Biden won on the Democrat side. “None of these candidates” took the top spot for the Republican primary as former President Donald Trump opted to compete in the Republican caucus instead.  Registered Republican Daphne Lee told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that she and her family were all listed as having voted by mail even though they hadn’t. She added that she was told she was no longer registered to vote after attempting to opt out of getting mail ballots.  CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP “It’s just so frustrating‚” she said. “This makes everyone uncomfortable.” Nevada Republican Party Chairman Michael McDonald said that the party was speaking with Aguilar’s office about the investigation.  “We take these reports very seriously‚” said Chairman Michael McDonald. “The cornerstone of our Republic is the trust and confidence of the American people in the electoral process. Any indication of irregularities must be thoroughly investigated to ensure the integrity of our elections.” Nevada has universal mail voting‚ meaning that every registered voter in the state is mailed a ballot.
