Spirit Airlines Receives Warning After Flying To Close To Air Force One While President Trump Was Onboard
Spirit Airlines is making headlines once again for the wrong reasons.
Spirit Airlines flight 1300 received multiple warnings from air traffic controllers after flying too close to Air Force One while President Trump and First Lady Melania were onboard.
President Trump and Melania were heading to the United Kingdom for a state visit.
CBS reported more details on the close call:
Air traffic controllers urgently and repeatedly ordered the pilots of Spirit Airlines flight 1300 to turn away from Air Force One Tuesday over Long Island, New York.
The Spirit flight was traveling from Fort Lauderdale to Boston as Air Force One was carrying President Trump, first lady Melania Trump and many others to a state visit to the United Kingdom.
“Spirit 1300 turn 20 degrees right,” an air traffic controller radioed according to recordings from liveatc.net. “Pay attention, Spirit 1300 turn 20 degrees right. Spirit 1300 turn 20 degrees right, now. Spirit wings 1300 turn 20 degrees right, immediately.”
Preliminary flight data from flightradar24.com indicates the Spirit Airbus A321 and Air Force One were flying parallel to each other eight miles apart, and were 11 miles apart when they were on the closest path where they could converge.
After the Spirit pilots acknowledged the transmission the controller clapped back, “Pay attention. Spirit 1300 traffic off your left wing by six mi– or eight miles, 747. I’m sure you can see who it is. Keep an eye out for him — he’s white and blue.”
“Safety is always our top priority,” a Spirit Spokesman told CBS News late Monday. “Spirit Airlines flight 1300 followed procedures and Air Traffic Control (ATC) instructions while en route to Boston and landed uneventfully (in Boston).”

Earlier in the month, Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy.
ABC News reported it was the second time this year Spirit filed for bankruptcy:
Spirit Airlines announced that it has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy — marking the second time the budget airline has filed for bankruptcy in less than a year.
“Since emerging from our previous restructuring, which was targeted exclusively on reducing Spirit’s funded debt and raising equity capital, it has become clear that there is much more work to be done and many more tools are available to best position Spirit for the future,” Spirit President and Chief Executive Officer Dave Davis said in a statement on Friday.
“After thoroughly evaluating our options and considering recent events and the market pressures facing our industry, our Board of Directors decided that a court-supervised process is the best path forward to make the changes needed to ensure our long-term success.”
“We have evaluated every corner of our business and are proceeding with a comprehensive approach in which we will be far more strategic about our fleet, markets and opportunities in order to best serve our Guests, Team Members and other stakeholders,” the statement continued.
Spirit said it will use this process to implement a financial and operational transformation to redesign its network, optimize its fleet, address its cost structure and realign its strategy to effectively compete and meet evolving consumer preferences.
