A shelter-in-place order was issued for residents of Mansfield, Connecticut, on Thursday morning after a train carrying liquid propane derailed. One of the cars leaked 2,500 gallons of grease, but it has been cleaned up, the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection said. There were no evacuations and no other leaks, according to Roache. Officials have issued a shelter-in-place for residents within a half mile of 1090 Stafford Road. The town of Mansfield has also declared a local state of emergency, according to DESPP. The derailment was reported at 9:08 a.m. Thursday, Connecticut State Police said. The cause of the incident is still under investigation. Although there were no leaks when the train derailed, crews still need to place the cars upright. The town asks that residents in the area stay indoors in case a leak occurs while they work to do so. Closing the windows is out of an abundance of caution, fire officials said, noting the liquified propane is odorless, so residents wouldn’t notice a leak. However, they made it clear no leaks have been detected at this time. Residents are asked to watch for updates as crews continue to monitor the situation, which includes testing air quality.
