North Carolina Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, who was reportedly under consideration to run with Vice President Kamala Harris on the Democratic presidential ticket, said on Monday that it “wasn’t the right time” for him to “potentially” run for vice president. Cooper released a statement Monday evening voicing his “strong support” for Harris’ campaign, but adding, “This just wasn’t the right time for North Carolina and for me to potentially be on a national ticket.” The governor is nearing the end of his second term and will soon be termed out. “As I’ve said from the beginning, [Harris] has an outstanding list of people from which to choose, and we’ll all work to make sure she wins,” Cooper added. pic.twitter.com/vBmxvUhuFu — Roy Cooper (@RoyCooperNC) July 30, 2024 A source involved with Harris’ search for a VP told NBC News that the 67-year-old Cooper asked to be removed from the shortlist because he plans on running for Senate in 2026. The North Carolina governor’s second term will end at the beginning of 2025, and Cooper has endorsed Democratic candidate Josh Stein to take his place. Stein is running against Republican Mark Robinson, a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump. Harris’ list of potential running mates is shrinking as Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also said earlier this week that she is not being vetted, adding, “I have communicated with everyone, including the campaign, that I’ve made a commitment to serve out my term as governor in Michigan.” “I can be an excellent ally to a President Harris and I can be a great co-chair of the Harris campaign from my place as governor. So I am not a part of the vetting,” Whitmer said. Harris’ shortlist includes Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Bloomberg reported. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is also reportedly in the running. Biden cabinet members, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo are also being floated as potential VP picks.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) confronted acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe on Tuesday about firing personnel over the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The clash took place as Rowe and FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate appeared before the Senate’s Judiciary and Homeland Security committees over the security lapse underlying the attack. Questions have been raised about how the gunman, identified as a 20-year-old man named Thomas Matthew Crooks, managed to get onto a nearby rooftop and begin shooting with a rifle. A Secret Service sniper shot and killed Crooks while other personnel rushed to protect Trump and escort him off the stage, but not before the former president got hit in the right ear. One rallygoer, 50-year-old fireman Corey Comperatore, was killed. Two others were wounded and have been released from the hospital in recent days. Former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned last week, one day after testifying before the House as she faced backlash over the security failure underlying the Trump rally shooting. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas then announced that Rowe, the Secret Service’s deputy director, would become acting director. During the hearing on Tuesday, Hawley asked Rowe to identify the lead site agent who made the decision to leave the building on which the gunman opened fire outside of the security perimeter. Hawley suggested people being shot, including Trump getting hit in the ear, is sufficient enough to have the person who decided to keep the building outside the security perimeter step down. Rowe pushed back on the notion of focusing on one particular agent, stressing that he wanted to figure out the “entire decision process” and interview everyone involved in security that day. Hawley retorted by emphasizing his concern relates to why the Secret Service has not relieved of duty all the officials who made “bad” judgments. “I’m trying to find someone who is accountable here,” the senator declared. During her 2020 presidential campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris pledged that she would work to keep transgender criminals out of jail, archived campaign materials reviewed by The Daily Wire reveal. Harris’ now-inactive campaign website claims that “the LGBTQ+ community is exposed to higher rates of violence and assault in prison, and it is even more so with transgender individuals.” Harris, it says, would work as president to “reduce incarceration of LGBTQ+ individuals.” “Kamala understands the best way to address the issue is to seek alternatives to incarceration to prevent trans individuals from being incarcerated in the first place,” the site reads. “Kamala would also push to significantly reform our sentencing laws to further reduce sentences.” Now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Harris has come under fire for walking back several extreme positions she took in 2020. Her campaign now claims that she would not ban fracking, even though such a ban was a centerpiece of her 2020 campaign. Harris and her allies have also erroneously asserted that she was never the Biden administration’s “border czar,” a claim echoed by several media outlets. Former President Donald Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), blasted Harris over her pledge to keep transgender people out of prison. “I find it pretty weird that Kamala Harris was so fixated on the issue of ‘transgender incarceration’ that she said we should seek alternatives to jail time for criminals who violate the law,” Vance told The Daily Wire. “I don’t care what gender you think you are: if you break the law you should go to jail. It’s as simple as that.” The Harris campaign did not respond to a request for comment. Harris’ campaign website also notes the candidate’s plan to “build a new generation of transgender leaders” and “work with transgender leaders and advocates to implement a comprehensive agenda to not just address the epidemic of violence trans persons face, but to create opportunity and build a more inclusive America.” The Biden-Harris administration has routinely pushed far-left gender ideology and celebrated transgenderism. The administration has encouraged sex-change attempts among federal bureaucrats, with executive agencies creating gender transition support plans and barring government employees from referring to those who identified as transgender with biologically accurate pronouns. The administration has also pushed radical gender theory in the military. A Daily Wire investigation revealed that a diversity, equity, and inclusion newsletter from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence celebrated one employee who said that crossdressing made him a better intelligence agent. Curiously, the transgender section of Harris’ campaign website wades into what would become the defining issue of Harris’ vice presidency. “Trump’s inhumane immigration policies have put these communities, especially transgender women, in dangerous conditions and have even resulted in death,” the site reads. “Kamala will immediately take executive action to address these issues while pursuing broader reform in Congress. She will: Increase the number of refugees admitted to the United States from a record low under the Trump Administration and provide appropriate services to refugees including legal counsel.” “It doesn’t shock me that someone like Border Czar Kamala Harris can’t wrap her head around the basic principles of law and order,” Vance said, noting that Harris “has allowed over ten million illegal immigrants across our border—some of the violent murders and drug traffickers.” “She is simply too weak and too far left to lead this country.”

Earlier this month, the board of the ERLC, which is the SBC’s lobbying arm, announced it was firing President Brent Leatherwood, who has faced criticism from conservatives within the SBC over his apparent friendly statements about Joe Biden and his advocacy for a red flag law in Tennessee.  Hours after the announcement, however, the ERLC backtracked and said it was reinstating Leatherwood. Basham said the controversy shows more proof of how the SBC is being influenced by legacy media, but she added that rank-and-file Southern Baptists are waking up to the political influences on their denomination.  “The New York Times, CNN, the Atlantic, POLITICO, and many other secular media outlets, immediately howled about Leatherwood’s ouster. That tells you they understand how valuable he is to them in his position,” Basham said. “In the end, Leatherwood was reinstated, but there’s no question that this is not over because of the unhappiness of Southern Baptists with his leadership. They may not have media megaphones, but their demands for accountability cannot be held off forever.” Basham urged evangelical leaders to “get serious about tracing the secular Left influences in any number of evangelical institutions.”  “When we have leftwing billionaires like atheist George Soros or Buddhist Pierre Omidyar funding evangelical projects, (especially given their direct opposition to biblical ethics on issues like the sanctity of life and gender, sexuality, and marriage), we should ask why,” she said.  “When church leadership does not know who is behind an organization, they should not agree to sign their public statements or participate in their coalitions.
