Firefighters battled a raging inferno at a chicken farm in Marion County, Illinois. At least 20 fire departments worked on putting out the blaze. It could also be seen from miles away. Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps said there wasn’t any determination of what may have caused the fire yet. “The fire began around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Farina Farms along Highway 37. Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps described the fire as ‘humongous’ and said multiple buildings spanning 200-300 yards long were on fire,” KSDK reports. The massive fire is the latest deterrent to the nation’s food supply. Farmers had to kill approximately 4.2 million chickens after bird flu was detected at a large egg farm in Sioux County, Iowa. The smoke flume could be seen throughout southern Illinois. It even showed up on the Doppler radar, Cripps said. "As everyone probably knows, the chicken farm is on fire," the neighboring city of Kinmundy said in a Facebook post, adding that firefighters were trucking in water from both Farina and Kinmundy and asking for residents to conserve water. The Beckemeyer Volunteer Fire Department hauled just under 30,000 gallons of water almost 45 miles from its station to the fire, Chief Luke Baker said. The department was just one of 20 to 30 tankers hauling water to the scene. "You can imagine the amount of water and manpower that was being used," Baker said. "... Requests like this are made by MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) to bring resources in from different areas so as not to deplete a whole county's fire departments in one place. Planned Parenthood took so much backlash on Thursday for an X post claiming “abortion is healthcare” that the account had to limit replies. “Abortion is health care — and that’s facts,” the post read, with an emoji of a hand with the fingernails painted bright red. The comment accompanied a meme asking the question, “Where does it hurt?” A person with a headache was shown as the outline of a person with a red spot covering the head. Likewise, a person with a stomachache was shown as the outline of a person with a red spot over the stomach. A third person represented someone who had been told that abortion is not health care, and was shown as an outline entirely filled in with red. On Thursday, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts rejected a request from Senate Democrats for a meeting to discuss flags seen flying at Justice Samuel Alito‘s homes that have drawn ethics complaints from the Left. Roberts conveyed his message in a brief letter to Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts,” who sent a missive last week asking for an audience with the chief justice. “I must respectfully decline your request for a meeting,” Roberts said, adding later, “Separation of powers concerns and the importance of preserving judicial independence counsel against such appearances.” He continued, “Moreover, the format proposed — a meeting with leaders of only one party who have expressed an interest in matters currently pending before the Court — simply underscores that participating in such a meeting would be inadvisable.” The controversy took flight with a pair of recent New York Times reports that said an upside-down American flag and an “Appeal to Heaven” flag were spotted at homes owned by Roberts after similar flags were witnessed at the U.S. Capitol breach on January 6, 2021. Durbin and Whitehouse additionally urged Roberts to “ensure” Alito would recuse himself from any cases related to the 2020 election or the Capitol riot, including those that relate to the question of former President Donald Trump’s claims of immunity. Alito told Senate Democrats on Wednesday he would not bend to their demands. He denied being involved in putting up either flag and said his wife, Martha-Ann, put them on display as she is “fond of flying flags” and has the same First Amendment rights as every other American. “A reasonable person who is not motivated by political or ideological considerations or a desire to affect the outcome of Supreme Court cases would conclude that this event does not meet the applicable standard for recusal. I am therefore duty-bound to reject your recusal request,” Alito said. In his letter on Thursday, Roberts made reference to Alito’s response and noted how members of the Supreme Court “recently reaffirmed the practice we have followed for 235 years pursuant to which individual Justices decide recusal issues.”
