After diving into the genomes of North Atlantic blue whales‚ scientists have found that the population is infused with a significant amount of hybrid DNA due to interbreeding with fin whales. Furthermore‚ it appears that blue whales are interbreeding with the blue-fin hybrids‚ adding a further twist to this genetic cocktail.In the new study‚ scientists studied the genomes of dozens of North Atlantic blue whales‚ including individuals from the present day and historical museum collections. On average‚ they found that around 3.5 percent of the North Atlantic blue whale’s genome came from fin whales as a result of interbreeding.Blue whales are a species of baleen whale that can reach lengths of 33 meters (108 feet)‚ making them the largest-known animal to have ever existed on Earth. North Atlantic blue whales have been decimated by whaling over the past few centuries and they are still considered to be highly endangered. Current estimates suggest there are 4‚000 to 5‚000 blue whales in the whole eastern North Atlantic basin. As the study notes‚ this is fairly remarkable since the pair diverged from each other on the evolutionary family tree around 8.35 million years ago. However‚ the true scale of the interbreeding was previously unclear.The new study also suggested that the blue-fin whale hybrids are fertile and capable of producing their own offspring. You might have been taught at school that two different species cannot interbreed and create fertile offspring‚ but there are many exceptions to that rule – including these whale hybrids. Oddly‚ the gene flow was found to be unidirectional from fin whales to blue whales. In other words‚ the blue whale population is being diluted with fin whale DNA‚ but not the other way around.Mark Engstrom‚ study co-author and an ecological geneticist at the University of Toronto‚ told Live Science that it's unclear why this is the case. However‚ he explained that it may be because there are higher numbers of fin whales in the North Atlantic than blue whales.Promisingly‚ the analysis found that blue whale populations in the North Atlantic seem to have very little inbreeding. However‚ the level of hybridization is slightly concerning. If blue whale populations continue to interbreed with fin whales‚ they run the risk of losing some genetic variability. “Hybridization of blue whales with fin whales appears frequent in the NA [North Atlantic] and future rates of hybridization should be monitored. While genetic variability in NA blue whales is high‚ this is likely due to the recency of the bottleneck and the species long generation time‚ since it takes time to see the impact of population reduction on the genomes‚” the study authors write. “If blue whale populations do not increase from their current low levels‚ reduction in heterozygosity probably will occur over time‚” they add.The study is published in the journal Conservation Genetics.

Nutrition is always a hot topic‚ with people holding very strong opinions about the best diet plan to ensure long-term health. However‚ science is far from settled on how different diets can impact the immune system. To find out more‚ researchers from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) took two of today’s most popular diets – vegan and ketogenic (or keto) – to look at how following them affects the body’s ability to fight disease.In some respects‚ vegan and keto diets are kind of opposites of each other. Vegan diets‚ which contain no animal-derived products‚ tend to be lower in fat and higher in carbohydrates. By contrast‚ the point of the keto diet is to get the body into a state of ketosis‚ where stored fat is used as a fuel source‚ rather than sugars. To achieve this‚ it’s necessary to eat a very low-carb‚ high-fat diet.Questions over which of these two diets is “best” have sparked a lot of debate‚ but this study was focused solely on the potential effects on the immune system.        The researchers recruited 20 people‚ with as diverse a mix of ethnicities‚ genders‚ body mass indexes (BMIs)‚ and ages as possible. All participants tried both diets over the course of the study‚ following one for two weeks before swapping over. To ensure that everything could be carefully controlled‚ the group lived on-site at the Metabolic Clinical Research Unit for the duration of the experiment. They were allowed to eat as much as they liked as long as they stuck to the rules for vegan or keto‚ and were provided with snacks and meals that conformed to the correct diet.Blood‚ urine‚ and stool samples were collected periodically for analysis. The scientists used a multi-omics analytical approach‚ combining lots of different types of data including biochemical‚ metabolic‚ and changes to the microbiome.In general‚ the participants consumed fewer calories while on the vegan diet than when they were following the keto diet. As expected‚ the compositions of both diets varied massively – the vegan diet was roughly 10 percent fat and 75 percent carbs‚ whereas the keto diet was around 76 percent fat and 10 percent carbs.        In a press release discussing the findings‚ the NIH explained that both diets caused “notable changes in all participants.”Switching to a vegan diet caused rapid changes in pathways linked to the innate immune system‚ which includes the body’s defenses against viruses. It also boosted pathways linked to red blood cells‚ which could be due to its higher iron content. Swapping over to the keto diet quickly led to increases in processes associated with the adaptive immune system‚ such as cellular pathways linked to T and B cells. The keto diet also seemed to have more wide-ranging effects‚ with a greater number of blood proteins and body tissues being impacted. The authors also observed changes in amino acid metabolism‚ which could be explained by the keto diet’s higher protein content.Both diets also caused shifts in the microbiomes of the participants‚ even after following the plans for such a short time. The order in which people followed the diets did not affect the results. The study authors noted that the effects were strikingly uniform considering the diversity of the participants involved‚ but say more research with larger samples is now needed to zero in on specific components of the immune system.“Uncovering the principles by which nutrition regulates immunity in humans could greatly improve our ability to design personalized nutritional interventions that prevent and treat disease‚” they write in their paper. “We believe that our present findings further highlight the great potential of highly controlled dietary interventions to better understand integrative physiology‚ improve human health and mitigate disease.”The study is published in Nature Medicine.

A legal battle over the safety of adding fluoride to drinking water in the US is currently in full swing‚ with plaintiffs arguing that the chemical poses a threat to the neurodevelopment of children. Judge Edward Chen of the US District Court for the Northern District of California has been hearing expert testimony since January 31‚ and could order the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban fluoridation if claimants can prove that the practice is linked to a lowering of IQ.Fluoride has been routinely added to US drinking water supplies since 1946 in order to protect people’s teeth from decay. However‚ opponents of the policy have repeatedly pointed to animal studies showing that exposure to high levels of the mineral may lead to cognitive impairment.The issue came to a head in 2017 when a group of plaintiffs led by the non-governmental organization Food and Water Watch (FWW) brought an action against the EPA under the Toxic Substances Control Act. The hearing began in June 2020‚ but Chen halted proceedings shortly afterwards in order to wait for a report by the government’s National Toxicology Program (NTP) to be published.It is on this report that the case hinges‚ and while the document has still not been published‚ Chen has now allowed the trial to resume. Initiated in 2016‚ the NTP assessment consists of a systematic review of all the available data on the neurodevelopmental effects of fluoride exposure in both humans and animals. Overall‚ the review found “with moderate confidence‚ that higher fluoride exposure […] is consistently associated with lower IQ in children.”For instance‚ of the 19 reliable studies on children included in the review‚ 18 demonstrated a link between exposure to high levels of fluoride and lower IQ. However‚ in all such cases‚ total fluoride exposure was equal to or greater than 1.5 milligrams per liter of water. In the US‚ however‚ drinking water contains less than half this concentration‚ with just 0.7 milligrams of the mineral in every liter.Nonetheless‚ the NTP initially proposed a “hazard classification” for fluoride when it published the first draft of its report in 2019. This was later retracted after peer review by the National Academies of Science‚ Engineering‚ and Medicine (NASEM) found that the authors’ conclusions were “not adequately supported.”In its second draft‚ the NTP wrote that fluoride’s “effects on cognitive neurodevelopment are inconsistent‚ and therefore unclear.” However‚ this statement was left out of the most recent draft‚ which was presented to the NASEM in September 2022.Displeased by this omission‚ the NASEM has requested that the NTP amend the report once again. Specifically‚ the peer reviewers have asked the study authors to include the following paragraph:“When focusing on findings from studies with exposures in ranges typically found in drinking water in the United States (0.7 mg/L for optimally fluoridated community water systems) that can be evaluated for dose response‚ effects on cognitive neurodevelopment are inconsistent‚ and therefore unclear.”The NTP‚ however‚ disagrees with this recommendation‚ and believes the report should simply state that “more studies are needed to fully understand the potential for lower fluoride exposure to affect children’s IQ.”While these disagreements continue to hold up the publication of the report‚ Chen has now heard the opening arguments put forward by attorney Michael Connett‚ representing the plaintiffs. Addressing the court‚ he reportedly said that infants fed baby formula with tap water represent a “critical vulnerable group being exposed to the highest dose of fluoride of any age group in the population.”Ultimately‚ the onus is on the FWW and co to prove that fluoride poses an “unreasonable risk” to the health of fetuses and children. Experts on both sides of the divide are now expected to give evidence over nine days‚ after which Chen will rule on whether or not the EPA must regulate fluoridation.

New species are discovered all the time – and while some fit nicely into previously created taxonomic families‚ others are so funky that they get a whole new naming system created just for them. Introducing the St George’s Cross Medusa (Santjordia pagesi) a brand new medusa jellyfish species from deep waters off the coast of Japan.This new species was seen and then captured at 812 meters (2‚664 feet) deep in the Sumisu Caldera off the coast of the Ogasawara Islands‚ roughly 460 kilometers (285.8 miles) south of Tokyo in Japan. Normally‚ species descriptions are made from several individuals‚ but this new species was named from a single specimen that was captured from a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) called Hyper-Dolphin in 2002. More individuals were also observed‚ but not until 2020‚ when another ROV filmed (but did not collect) an individual of the same species. The Caldera is a hydrothermal deep-sea volcano structure that has a diameter of about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles)‚ and the researchers suspect further dives would reveal more of this new rare species. The St George’s Cross Medusa has been given this name because of the bright red cross – actually the medusa’s stomach – that is similar to the St George’s Cross on the flag of England‚ which can be seen when the medusa is looked at from above.“The species is very different from all the deep-sea medusae discovered to date. It’s relatively small‚ whereas others in this kind of environment are much larger. The bright red coloring of its stomach probably has to do with capturing food‚” Said André Morandini‚ last author of the paper and professor of zoology at the University of São Paulo’s Institute of Biosciences (IB-USP) and Director of the Center for Marine Biology (CEBIMar)‚ in a statement. The team thinks that the bright red color of the stomach helps to disguise the jellyfish’s food from predators. Much of their diet is bioluminescent organisms that glow in the deep dark waters – having a red tummy deadens the glow‚ protecting the jellyfish after it has consumed its meal. The medusa has been given both a new name and a new subfamily with which to belong‚ named Santjordiinae. This new jelly has small sensory structures called "rhopalia" on both the edge and the underneath of its umbrella making it unique within the order Semaeostomeae to which more commonly known species like the moon jellyfish belong. The team suggests that the new species might fit within the Semaeostomeae when more sampling has been carried out on different species‚ but for now‚ it is placed in the broader jellyfish family Ulmaridae.The team also thinks that because the new species is quite different from all other species previously found‚ it could also hold a new selection of venoms that could be quite different from those previously studied.  “Who knows? Maybe it holds secrets more valuable than all the mineral wealth that could be extracted from that place. All this with the advantage of keeping the species and the site intact‚” Morandini said.The paper is published in the journal Zootaxa.

The two hosts lobbed mostly softballs and let their guests go on unchallenged monologues as they discussed their favorite pet issues. On the Senate’s immigration bill‚ Colbert claimed that “it's actually the bill the Republicans probably couldn't get under other circumstances.” Warren agreed and hyped various parts of the bill‚ “So people who are here‚ who are trying to get asylum‚ actually would be allowed‚ legally‚ to go get jobs... They can move out of shelters. They can pay taxes.” However‚ she also attacked the bill from the left‚ “I also want to say there are some things that are really missing.”     Warren mostly meant a pathway to citizenship provision‚ “I worked on a bill with a lot of other people to say‚ 'Let's create a path to citizenship for these undocumented workers. Let's not' -- I don't want to bang a pan to say thank you. I actually want to say you have helped save this nation [during COVID]. You kept our food supply going‚ you kept our medical care going‚ you kept our trash pickup going. We are grateful and we will show we are grateful by creating the path to citizenship.”  Later‚ Colbert wondered‚ “Why are you mad at Jerome Powell‚ the Fed chair‚ Jerome Powell. Make a case for why you think people should turn out for president Biden in November.” Sanders launched into a nearly three-minute monologue that consisted of typical talking points about both Donald Trump‚ “Trump is trying to do is get us to hate each other‚ based on where we were born‚ or the color of our skin‚ or our sexual orientation and we just cannot allow that to happen.” As for Biden‚ “The economy‚ as you indicated is really doing well‚ unemployment extremely low we're creating a whole lot of jobs‚ rebuilding manufacturing in America."     Summing up the choice‚ Sanders claimed‚ “if you really want to turn your back on the millions of men and women who fought to defend democracy‚ I guess Trump is your candidate. But if you believe in what this country is supposed to value‚ is that we all come together as one people‚ we believe in the rule of law‚ Biden is your candidate.” Shifting topics‚ Meyers observed‚ “You've called Hamas a disgusting terrorist organization‚ many hostages are not back‚ and yet we also see an unspeakable loss of civilian lives in Gaza‚ is there -- do you have any optimism for a peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians?”  Sanders proved he has no grasp of geopolitical realities as he on one hand claimed‚ “we in the United States through our financial support of Israel are complicit in what's happening and I will be damned if I'm going to give another nickel to the Netanyahu government in order to continue this war against the Palestinian people.” Meyers claimed solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was above his paygrade‚ but repeated his question about whether there’s any hope for peace‚ to which Sanders claimed‚ “So‚ we're talking about a two-state solution. Hamas cannot be‚ in my view‚ part of that equation. They are a terrorist jihadist group‚ there are people‚ Palestinians‚ who believe in democracy‚ Palestinians who do believe in improving the lives of people there.” Does Sanders think Hamas is just going to voluntarily agree to leave power in Gaza? First-time buyer can't get into this market. People can't move and even for renters‚ it affects what you pay for rent because when your landlord is paying more for a mortgage‚ believe you me the landlord passes it on to the tenant. Plus‚ it means there's less new construction and we need more housing so I want him to bring those interest rates down.  COLBERT: Last week‚ you‚ Senator Fetterman‚ Senator Schumer‚ and Senator Sanders sent a letter to the DEA asking for marijuana to be descheduled.  WARREN: Yeah. COLBERT: How is that different—two-part question: how is that different from legalization? And are you high right now?  WARREN: So‚ let's do the first part. The answer is‚ legalization is what you do if you had a functional Congress. Well‚ that's not the world we live in. So descheduling is something the administration could do without going to Congress. Right now marijuana is scheduled‚ it's called‚ as a drug by the DEA‚ at the same risk as heroin.  And that means not only is it illegal‚ you can't even do research on it. It's so – no and what we are saying in this letter is guys‚ get with it‚ at the DEA. It's not 1954. More than half of all states have legalized marijuana. They’ve said either-- Massachusetts‚ it's legal both for medicinal purposes and recreational purposes.  COLBERT: Actually mandatory. The toll booths on 95‚ they just hand them out.  WARREN: You know; you still have personal choice.  COLBERT: Okay‚ I understand. Just keep it.  WARREN: Alright. He's trying to undermine democracy.  He is a pathological liar. And he is in very intense ways trying to divide our people up. Look‚ this country faces enormous problems today and we all know what they are. We're talking about income and wealth inequality‚ we're talking about 60 percent of workers living paycheck to paycheck‚ we're talking about the existential threat of climate change‚ enormous problems facing this country.  But instead of focusing and providing solutions to those problems‚ what Trump is trying to do is get us to hate each other‚ based on where we were born‚ or the color of our skin‚ or our sexual orientation and we just cannot allow that to happen and then on top of all that‚ you've got a guy in Trump‚ who during his presidency gave massive tax breaks to the rich‚ at a time when we have unprecedented income and wealth inequality‚ it's the last thing they need.  This guy wants to throw tens of millions of people off of the health insurance that they have‚ he appointed anti-union members of his administration to make it harder for workers to form unions and I'll tell you‚ all over this country‚ women are fighting for the right to control their own bodies‚ he wants to take that away.  So that's Trump.  And on the other hand in Biden‚ I'm not going to sit here‚ you know I ran against Biden‚ so I'm not going to sit here and tell you I agree with everything Joe Biden is doing‚ I don't‚ big time. But on the other hand‚ this is the first president in the history of the United States to walk on a picket line with workers! And that's a pretty impressive thing.  We made some progress in lowering the cost of prescription drugs and taking on the pharmaceutical industry. The economy‚ as you indicated is really doing well‚ unemployment extremely low we're creating a whole lot of jobs‚ rebuilding manufacturing in America‚ so we're beginning to move forward in the right direction‚ and in my view we have a lot‚ lot more to do‚ but the choice in this election is very clear if you do not believe in democracy‚ if you really want to turn your back on the millions of men and women who fought to defend democracy‚ I guess Trump is your candidate. But if you believe in what this country is supposed to value‚ is that we all come together as one people‚ we believe in the rule of law‚ Biden is your candidate.  MEYERS: I want to ask‚ because I know you've been a voice in the Senate over the current situation in the Middle East‚ we are almost four months after the horrifically unforgettable acts of October 7. You've called Hamas a disgusting terrorist organization‚ many hostages are not back‚ and yet we also see an unspeakable loss of civilian lives in Gaza‚ is there -- do you have any optimism for a peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians?  SANDERS: Seth‚ I hope to God it takes place‚ as you've just indicated‚ Hamas began this war with their horrific‚ brutal terrorist attack against‚ killing 1‚200 innocent Israelis‚ wounding more‚ taking over 200 people hostage.  But I have to tell you that what Netanyahu and his right-wing government are doing right now to the people of Palestine is‚ of Gaza is indescribable and unspeakable. I mean‚ we're looking at 25‚ 26‚000 people who have been killed already‚ two-thirds of whom are women and children‚ 65‚000 people who have been wounded‚ we're looking at 70 percent of the housing units in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed.  Can you believe that 70 percent? You're looking at 1.8 million people pushed out of their homes‚ God knows where they're going‚ and right now‚ and this is -- I hope everybody hears this you're looking at the possibility of hundreds of thousands of children starving to death and we in the United States through our financial support of Israel are complicit in what's happening and I will be damned if I'm going to give another nickel to the Netanyahu government in order to continue this war against the Palestinian people MEYERS: Do you see -- I mean‚ it all seems so impossible I mean‚ I certainly don't know the solution I wouldn't ever claim to but do you see any hope for optimism that there's a future for the Palestinians and Israelis  SANDERS: The history of the region is terrible‚ you know‚ we don't have time to go into it‚ deals with the Holocaust‚ of six million Jews‚ it deals with the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their home‚ but at the end of the day‚ the people‚ Palestinian people are entitled to a homeland of their own. So‚ we're talking about a two-state solution. Hamas cannot be‚ in my view‚ part of that equation. They are a terrorist jihadist group‚ there are people‚ Palestinians‚ who believe in democracy‚ Palestinians who do believe in improving the lives of people there. We've got to work with those people‚ and create a long-term solution where Israel has the security that it is entitled to‚ and the Palestinians have a state of their own‚ and the freedom that they are entitled to.
