Can You Die From Hanging Upside Down?

Face turning red‚ eyes feeling squashed‚ a pulsing in your ears: hanging upside down is not a pleasant experience‚ but how dangerous can being suspended the wrong way up really be? The truth is that it is possible to die from hanging upside down because the posture puts undue pressure on certain organs. The human body really evolved to be a certain way up.The Nutty Putty Cave incidentAn example of the dangers of hanging upside down is the Nutty Putty cave incident‚ which highlights the dangers of spelunking. The cave‚ West of Utah Lake‚ is named after the viscous clay on its walls‚ which oozes and feels a little like Silly Putty when pushed. In 2009‚ John Edward Jones and his brother Josh got lost and found themselves in an un-mapped part of the cave. John crawled into an opening angled 70 degrees downwards‚ but became wedged and couldn’t get out.For the next day‚ rescuers tried to retrieve him as he lay face down in the passage. The position he was in put great strain on his heart to pump blood out of the brain‚ which is usually assisted by gravity. Rescuers tried to get him out using a pulley system‚ but it came loose and failed. After 27 hours‚ John died due to cardiac arrest‚ and the cave was sealed off with him still inside a week after his death. Are our organs fixed?A clever organ called the mesentery keeps our digestive organs in place when we’re standing upright‚ preventing organs like the liver from smushing into the organs beneath it. The mesentery extends from the back of the abdominal cavity to the intestines‚ and so while it can stabilize our gooey parts to some extent‚ it’s not enough to defy gravity. Our lungs and cardiovascular system both benefit from gravity making it easier to do their jobs‚ helping our chests to fill with air and blood to move around the body. However‚ turn a person upside down‚ and that all changes. Why being upside down can be deadlyResearch into 10 cases of people who had died in a head-down position revealed that heart failure is the most likely contributor to death in people who get stuck upside down. “Based on these cases‚ it is observed that elderly people‚ and in particular elderly with preexisting cardiovascular diseases‚ seem to be more prone to death in a head-down position than others‚” wrote the study authors. “This suggests that final heart failure is the cause of death rather than cerebral or pulmonary dysfunction. Results from human and animal experiments and observations under true and simulated microgravitational conditions confirm this assumption‚ suggesting that a prolonged‚ markedly elevated burden of work for the heart because of increased volume load in an inverted body position eventually leads to death by heart failure.”So for a long and healthy life‚ it pays to stay on your feet.

New Tiny Deer Species Is First Discovered In South America For Over 60 Years

A new species of tiny deer has been discovered in the central Andes in Peru‚ becoming the first new cervid species found in South America for over 60 years – though that’s not the only cool thing about this discovery.Previously‚ there were thought to be just two species of a group of deer known as pudus‚ which are the world’s smallest deer. They’re split into the Southern and Northern pudu‚ reflecting where they’re found. However‚ whilst out in the northern range‚ researcher Javier Barrio spotted something a bit odd about some of the deer. “He’d seen the animals in the field‚ and they looked different from others in the north‚” fellow study author Guillermo D’Elia told New Scientist. And so the team‚ which also included Eliécer E Gutiérrez‚ got to analyzing the animals. They carried out genetic tests to determine any DNA differences‚ as well as morphological analyses which required taking measurements of features such as skull length of museum specimens of the deer.Through these investigations‚ the researchers found that what was thought to be the Northern pudu could actually be split into two species‚ one of which was brand new. It’s been dubbed Pudella carlae‚ named after biologist Carla Gazzolo – who the study reports had helped to save Barrio’s life after a vascular problem – and is thought to live exclusively in the dry valleys of Peru’s Huancabamba Depression. The discovery of the new species also brings about the resurrection of the Pudella genus‚ which had previously been suggested in 1913 to separate the Northern and Southern species of pudus – the two smallest deer species in the world – but it fell out of favor. The new study suggests that P. carlae belongs to this genus and that the Northern pudu‚ currently Pudu mephistophiles‚ should too. Quite how the new species deviated from its relative‚ however‚ is unclear.“We don’t yet know if the new species arose from a population that became isolated when the depression formed‚ or from animals that later colonised and adapted‚ but we intend to find out‚” said D’Elia.Though all related‚ there are distinct differences between the now three known species of pudu. P.carlae sits in the middle in terms of size (though they’re all adorably tiny). It clocks in at only around 7 to 9 kilograms (15.4 to 19.8 pounds) – roughly the same as a dachshund should weigh – and the authors state that pudus are shorter than 43 cm (17 inches) at the shoulder. The new pudu also has a different color pattern to its fellow tiny deer‚ with paler ears and body fur that the authors describe as a “rich reddish brown or orange-red”‚ which certainly cements P. carlae as our new favorite cinnamon roll. The study is published in the Journal of Mammology.

iPhone SE 4 case leak shows Apple’s major redesign

iPhone SE 4 case leak shows Apple’s major redesign

The iPhone SE 4 is expected to launch only a year from now. Still‚ we have heard several rumors about its design in the past few weeks. Now‚ a Weibo leaker has shared a third-party case for this upcoming iPhone. The case design corroborates previous leaks‚ such as the iPhone SE 4 featuring an iPhone 14-like look‚ which means a larger display and a notch‚ instead of the classic iPhone 8 design from the previous generation SE device. Image source: Weibo The most interesting part of this iPhone SE 4 case is the main camera cutout‚ which is larger than the current iPhone SE 3 model but remains with only a single camera‚ meaning Apple will keep a second ultra-wide lens exclusive to the main lineup. Last week‚ BGR reported that this entry-level iPhone is expected to be released in 2025 as BOE just joined this device's supply chain. The manufacturer will ship up to 15 million 6.1-inch OLED panels next year. What we know about the iPhone SE 4 iPhone SE 4 might inherit the iPhone 14 design. Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR Previously‚ it was rumored that Apple would only launch a new iPhone SE 4 if it could develop its own 5G modems. While this project has been pretty much canceled as Apple focuses on its partnership with Qualcomm‚ Cupertino has decided to launch a new device in 2025. A sketchy rumor suggested Apple was planning a Dynamic Island design‚ but Apple usually adds an "outdated" design for its entry-level iPhone. By the time the first iPhone SE was released‚ Apple had used the iPhone 5 design‚ even though it had already introduced the iPhone 6s. Then‚ when the company moved to the iPhone X design‚ the iPhone SE changed to the iPhone 8 look. Despite that‚ this new iPhone may get the A16 Bionic with fewer cores. One primary camera will likely remain‚ and Apple might improve its 5G capabilities‚ although‚ again‚ we’re not expecting a custom 5G modem. Finally‚ early 2025 feels like a great goal to introduce this device‚ mainly because we’ll have the third generation of phones with a Dynamic Island‚ making a more significant distinction between newer and older iPhone designs. BGR will keep following the latest rumors about this device‚ and we’ll let you know if we discover anything new. Don't Miss: Apple’s major iPhone SE 4 redesign might not launch until 2025 The post iPhone SE 4 case leak shows Apple’s major redesign appeared first on BGR. Lightning-fast eero mesh WiFi is the best upgrade for smart homes

A smart home is only as good as its weakest link. I remember the early days of smart home tech‚ when half of my connected devices always seemed to be offline. For some people‚ that headache is still an issue. What you might not realize‚ however‚ is that the problem isn't always with your smart home devices themselves. Instead‚ you might just need a better home WiFi network. Lucky for you‚ I've tested dozens of different mesh wireless systems for BGR‚ and my favorite is Amazon's eero mesh WiFi systems are my favorite. Eero mesh wireless systems are easy to set up‚ easy to maintain‚ reliable‚ and lightning-fast. Right now‚ they also happen to be on sale starting at $104.99 for the eero 6+. And if you want the best of the best‚ you can save up to $140 on an eero Pro 6E mesh WiFi system. See all the discounts right here‚ or keep reading to see what makes eero so special. Amazon eero 6+ mesh Wi-Fi router | 1.0 Gbps Ethernet | Coverage up to 1‚500 sq. ft. | Connect 7… Price: $104.99 (reg. $140) You Save: $35.00 (25%) Buy Now Amazon eero 6+ mesh Wi-Fi router | 1.0 Gbps Ethernet | Coverage up to 4‚500 sq. ft. | Connect 7… Price: $224.99 (reg. $300) You Save: $75.00 (25%) Buy Now Amazon eero Pro 6E mesh Wi-Fi router | 2.5 Gbps Ethernet |Coverage up to 2‚000 sq. ft. | Connec… Price: $184.99 (reg. $250) You Save: $65.00 (26%) Buy Now Amazon eero Pro 6E mesh Wi-Fi router | 2.5 Gbps Ethernet | Coverage up to 2‚000 sq. ft. | Conne… Price: $409.99 (reg. $550) You Save: $140.00 (25%) Buy Now A few years ago‚ I upgraded my home WiFi system to the eero Pro 6. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I work from home‚ and unreliable WiFi was driving me crazy. Eero‚ on the other hand‚ delivers lightning-fast speeds that almost never have any hiccups. It was rather expensive at the time since a 3-pack of eero Pro 6 routers cost $600. Amazon's retail price has since fallen to $550 now that the newer eero Pro 6E system is out‚ but that's still quite a bit of money to spend on a mesh wireless system. Thankfully‚ Amazon is offering some terrific deals on comparable eero setups. Amazon eero 6+ mesh Wi-Fi router | 1.0 Gbps Ethernet | Coverage up to 1‚500 sq. ft. | Connect 7… Price: $104.99 (reg. $140) You Save: $35.00 (25%) Buy Now Amazon eero 6+ mesh Wi-Fi router | 1.0 Gbps Ethernet | Coverage up to 4‚500 sq. ft. | Connect 7… Price: $224.99 (reg. $300) You Save: $75.00 (25%) Buy Now First‚ the eero 6+ mesh WiFi system is on sale for $104.99 per router. Normally priced at $140 each‚ this model supports data speeds of up to 1 Gbps. That's more than fast enough for most households‚ even if you have four or five people in your family. Also‚ you can pick up the eero 6+ three-router system for $224.99‚ down from $300. Amazon eero Pro 6E mesh Wi-Fi router | 2.5 Gbps Ethernet |Coverage up to 2‚000 sq. ft. | Connec… Price: $184.99 (reg. $250) You Save: $65.00 (26%) Buy Now Amazon eero Pro 6E mesh Wi-Fi router | 2.5 Gbps Ethernet | Coverage up to 2‚000 sq. ft. | Conne… Price: $409.99 (reg. $550) You Save: $140.00 (25%) Buy Now On top of that‚ Amazon is offering deep discounts on its top-of-the-line eero system. You can currently save up to $110 on an eero Pro 6E three-router mesh WiFi system. That drops it to $409.99 instead of $550‚ and it's enough to cover 6‚000 sq. ft. in blazing-fast 2.3Gbps WiFi. You'll also find discounts on the single router and two-router versions. The only thing to keep in mind is that Amazon has made no effort to communicate when this sale might end. That means time is of the essence since this sale could end anytime this week.
