Tanner Usrey Blends Texas Soul & Southern Rock In Introspective New Album, ‘These Days’
Tanner Usrey is doing his part in keeping Southern rock alive, and he’s doing so in a trailblazing fashion that is uniquely his own.
No, he’s not from Jacksonville, FL, the neighboring states of Georgia or Alabama, or any of the southern locales from which the majority of the genre’s greats have hailed, but the Prosper, TX native has forged a distinctively swampy, gritty, and soulful sound that one can only imagine would make both Ronnie Van Zant and Duane Allman crack a smile if they were still with us today. And along with his deftly powerful songwriting and booming vocals, this Texas-bred and Southern rock inspired sound is on full display in his latest album.
Released this past Friday, Usrey’s sophomore effort These Days is an introspective and vulnerable look into his own mind, covering both trouble and triumph, and putting a hopeful spin on the mental health struggles he’s endured throughout his career as a musician and a man trying to find his way in love and life. Though they are all bound together within the ethos of the record and the underlying Southern rock influence, These Days features 10 tracks that differ sonically, ranging from stripped back balladry to guns a-blazing rock and roll. And each track packs a punch in its own way.
While many of the most vulnerable songs on the tracklist are solo writes, including the reluctantly optimistic title track “These Days,” Usrey worked with a slew of talented co-writers throughout the project as well. From The Red Clay Strays’ primary songwriters Drew Nix and Matthew Coleman (“If You Call Me Again”) to Texas legend Wade Bowen (“Smoke in the Air”), Usrey teamed up with a number of the industry’s top lyricist in an effort to bring fresh perspective to his own ideas and experiences.
Perhaps the most important collaboration on the project, though, was tapping into the never ending knowledge of all time great producer Dave Cobb, who has worked with an extensive roster of the genre’s top talent.
Usrey spoke to the invaluable impact Cobb had on the making of These Days:
“Ever since I started making music, I’ve wanted to make a record with Dave Cobb. he’s done some of my favorite albums by huge influences of mine like Whiskey Myers, Chris Stapleton, and of course Jason Isbell. Getting to see how Dave’s mind works and building this album with him was such a great experience, to say the least. I think this album captures the sound that I’ve been going for since I started, and really pushes my voice in a way that I haven’t before, which makes the band and I that much more excited to play it live.”
Recorded between Cobb’s Georgia Mae Studio in Savannah and the iconic RCA Studio A in Nashville, These Days is undoubtedly some of Usrey’s best work yet, which carries some weight when comparing it to his 2023 debut record Crossing Lines and all of the EPs and singles he’s released since 2018. So, with all that said, dive into Tanner Usrey’s sophomore album These Days – Heavily inspired by the likes of Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, and Drive-By Truckers, but with a spin of Texas soul that will make his Lone Star State proud.
Here’s a few early favorites:
“If You Call Me Again”
“4th of July”
“Don’t Let Go (Hold Me Close)”
“With You”
“Gasoline and Adderall”
While the recordings are great and all, you need to experience these songs live in order to truly grasp the magnitude of the music and the artistry that Tanner Usrey and his band bring to the table. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the remainder of the summer and well into the fall, so if he’s coming to a city near you, there are no excuses to miss out on greatness.
