Media Matters sues Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Over Investigation Into Its Demonetization Pressure

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Media Matters for America‚ a pro-censorship online monitoring group is making some censorship accusations of its own. The organization has initiated a federal lawsuit against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The lawsuit accuses Paxton of infringing upon the First Amendment within the context of a dispute involving Elon Musk’s X app. The organization alleges that this action noticeably impacted its operations‚ calling Paxton’s probe an illegal reprisal conceived to penalize it due to its reporting on ad campaigns found alongside controversial speech on X. We obtained a copy of the lawsuit for you here. Media Matters’ pressure on X advertisers created complications for Musk’s X platform‚ proving influential in causing a massive advertiser exodus‚ involving high-profile companies like Disney. Last month Paxton proclaimed he was launching an inquiry into Media Matters for suspected dishonest practices related to the probe of X. This declaration came at the same time that X leveled a lawsuit against Media Matters‚ accusing them of unlawfully meddling with their advertising relationships. Media Matters’ lawsuit did note that Paxton was among a group of “politicians and media figures” who quickly rallied to Musk’s defense following the reports by Media Matters. According to the complaint‚ filed on Monday‚ following Media Matters’ consequential reports about X‚ “Paxton issued a civil investigative demand (‘Demand’) to Media Matters‚ commanding it to ‘produce [] documentary material[s] and permit inspection and copying.’” The complaint further adds‚ “The Demand seeks a sweeping array of materials from Media Matters and [reporter Eric] Hananoki‚ including documents and communications about their research and reporting‚ their communications with possible sources at X and its advertisers‚ as well as sensitive materials related to Media Matters’s operations.” According to Media Matters‚ “Paxton’s retaliatory investigation and Demand are transparent attempts to punish Plaintiffs for their constitutionally protected speech and press activities‚ subjecting them to a baseless and arbitrary government investigation in a state to which they have no relevant connection‚ and demanding the right to rifle through their most sensitive journalistic and organizational documents and communication.” Media Matters alleges Paxton’s actions violate not just the First Amendment‚ but also the 14th Amendment’s due process protections‚ with their reporter shield laws in Maryland and Washington‚ D.C. encroached upon as well. The lawsuit also highlights that Media Matters is beyond Paxton’s jurisdictive reach as the watchdog is based in Washington and does not undertake business in Texas as per the local business regulations. Speaker Johnson points out the big problem with Biden's demand to send more taxpayer money to Ukraine

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday the Biden administration is still refusing to outline a clear strategic plan for American funding of Ukraine's war against Russia.President Joe Biden has asked Congress to pass a supplemental spending bill that would cost taxpayers $106 billion. The bill includes some funding for Israel and the border‚ but the lion's share — more than $61 billion — would be sent to Ukraine. Republicans‚ in response‚ have made simple requests of the White House. First‚ they have asked for more resources to address the border crisis‚ which is‚ after all‚ a domestic issue that directly impacts Americans. Second‚ they have asked the Biden administration to provide a clear strategic plan that outlines how Ukraine will defeat Russia and explain why taxpayers should fund that campaign. But‚ according to Johnson‚ Biden still refuses to provide lawmakers with such a plan."I have asked the White House since the day that I was handed the gavel as speaker for clarity. We need clear articulation of the strategy to allow Ukraine to win. Thus far‚ their responses have been insufficient. They have not provided us the clarity and the detail that we requested over and over‚" Johnson told reporters after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday."What the Biden administration seems to be asking for is billions of additional dollars with no appropriate oversight‚ no clear strategy to win‚ and none of the answers that I think the American people are owed‚" he said. — (@) Zelenskyy is campaigning on Capitol Hill to make his case for more Ukraine funding. He met with Johnson‚ the Senate‚ and Biden on Tuesday. His coercive message is simple: congressional inaction helps Russian President Vladimir Putin win.But Congress is unlikely to pass anything before its holiday recess. The major issue surrounding negotiations — including how much money should be sent to Ukraine compared to how much is spent on more pressing domestic issues — remains unresolved. The fact that Biden has not outlined a clear vision or strategy for U.S. involvement‚ moreover‚ does not help American support for Ukraine's war‚ which is waning. Like Blaze News? How Yukio Mishima led me to Christianity

How Yukio Mishima led me to Christianity

Fifty-three years ago‚ Japan’s most famous writer took a short sword and sliced open his abdomen‚ disemboweling himself. As prescribed by the ancient ritual of seppuku‚ his second was standing by to slice off his head at the same time; it ultimately took three strokes of the blade. Yukio Mishima‚ novelist‚ playwright‚ poet‚ screenwriter‚ and actor‚ was 45 years old. He and a few members of his right-wing paramilitary group‚ the Shield Society‚ had commandeered a military base outside Tokyo. After appearing on a balcony and exhorting the assembled soldiers to overthrow the government and reinstall the emperor‚ Mishima retreated inside and ended his life.It is hard to overstate how shocking Mishima’s suicide was. It was if Seamus Heaney were to blow his brains out on the steps of the McKee Barracks in Dublin at the height of his popularity. Mishima was also famous abroad: Just three months earlier‚ a cover story in the the New York Times magazine had dubbed him “Japan’s Renaissance Man.” Well over 10‚000 people‚ including fellow novelist Yasunari Kawabata‚ attended his public memorial service.Yukio Mishima was born Kimitake Hiraoka to a samurai-descended Tokyo family in 1925. His childhood years instilled in him the sense that he was unworthy of this pedigree. Mishima was raised by his cruel‚ neurotic‚ death-haunted grandmother‚ who forbade him to play outside with other boys and confined him indoors with his female cousins. When he went to live with his parents at age 12‚ he fared no better. His father was harsh disciplinarian who despised Mishima's pursuit of writing as effeminate. When Japan entered the Second World War in 1941‚ Mishima was called up for military service and subsequently deemed unfit‚ being so weak and sickly that he was misdiagnosed with tuberculosis. With Japan’s humiliating surrender in 1945‚ Mishima’s homeland seemed to embody the weakness he loathed in himself. Less than two months later‚ Mishima’s beloved sister Mitsuko died of typhus. These formative experiences led Mishima to return again and again to the same themes in his work: death‚ sexuality‚ youth‚ and idealism. From “The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea‚” which centers around a gang of schoolboys who reject the morality of the adult world‚ to “Runaway Horses‚” which follows a group of young radical nationalists during Japan's turbulent 1930's — both of which culminate in gruesome endings — Mishima's work is‚ to paraphrase his own words‚ a line of poetry written with a splash of blood. Few of his works have happy endings. Mishima frequently called attention to the link between his life and his work by giving characters personalities and upbringings strikingly similar to his own.Today‚ of course‚ Mishima’s suicide — along with his nationalist politics‚ ambiguous sexuality‚ obsessive bodybuilding‚ and fascination with violence and death — are part of his legend. Such a figure may seem an unlikely conduit to Christianity‚ and yet that is exactly where reading Mishima led me.It begins to make sense‚ however‚ when you consider the spiritual hunger at the heart of Mishima’s restless artistic ambition. The emperor was believed to be a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu; his surrender required both political and spiritual abdication. Forced to renounce his divinity‚ the emperor could no longer serve as the force holding together Japanese identity‚ leaving a void that liberal democracy rushed to fill. Mishima could only understand this as a degradation. Losing its divine emperor turned Japan into “an impersonal‚ empty‚ neutral‚ intermediate‚ opulent‚ shrewd‚ economic giant” that faced the same communist and anarchist youth movements that were roiling Western societies. It was to combat this malaise that Mishima formed the Shield Society in 1968‚ recruiting Japanese students who shared his disillusionment with postwar Japan. For Mishima‚ this disillusionment went beyond the political. In a 1966 interview with the magazine Sunday Mainichi‚ Mishima claimed that the “modernization” of Japan left individuals isolated and unable to connect: “For people who live in such a modern society love is impossible. For example‚ if A believes that he loves B‚ there is no means for him to be sure of it‚ and vice versa. Therefore‚ love cannot exist in a modern society — if it is merely a mutual relationship. If there is no image of a third man whom the two lovers have in common — the apex of the triangle — love ends with eternal scepticism. ... From ancient times the Japanese have had an image of the apex of the triangle (God)‚ which was a God in a physiocratic system; and everyone had a theory of love‚ so that he should not be isolated.”When I first read Mishima as a lonely 16-year-old‚ I recognized his profound yearning to live for something larger than oneself. This yearning consumed me‚ as well‚ and my readings in philosophy and political theory had failed to offer any relief. The fundamental dilemma‚ as Mishima pointed out in a 1966 interview with the Japanese news service NHK‚ was that “human beings aren’t strong enough to live and die only for themselves. That’s because we have ideals. We can only act for the sake of something. We soon tire of living only for ourselves. It necessarily follows that we also need to die for something. That something used to be called a 'noble cause.’ To die for a noble cause was thought the most glorious‚ heroic‚ or honourable way to die. But there are no noble causes today. Democratic governments obviously have no need for noble causes. Yet if one cannot find a value that transcends oneself‚ life itself‚ in a spiritual sense‚ is rendered meaningless.”“Human life is limited but I would like to live forever‚” wrote Mishima. He was not a Christian‚ but it was through him that I eventually found my “noble cause”: to die to myself and follow the One who died for me. Coming to Christ was the natural conclusion of my counterculture teenage angst. My dabbling in radical politics and strange and esoteric religions yielded intimations of the ultimate reality‚ but it was only in Christ’s mercy that I found the fullness of the truth. I often ponder why Mishima‚ so wise in so many ways‚ so principled and steadfast in his pursuit of the truth‚ could never accept that mercy for himself.

Pharmacy giants give medical records to police without demanding warrants

Several pharmacy giants gave patients' medical records to law enforcement agencies without warrants‚ a new congressional investigation revealed Tuesday.A press release from the United States Senate Committee on Finance revealed that large pharmacy companies‚ including CVS Health‚ Walgreens Boots Alliance‚ Cigna‚ Optum Rx‚ Walmart Stores‚ the Kroger Company‚ Rite Aid Corporation‚ and Amazon Pharmacy‚ provided private health information to law enforcement agencies without a court order.Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden (D-Oregon)‚ Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Washington)‚ and Representative Sara Jacobs (D-California) wrote a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra on Tuesday informing the department of their oversight inquiry's findings."Through briefings with the major pharmacies‚ we learned that each year law enforcement agencies secretly obtain the prescription records of thousands of Americans without a warrant‚" the Democratic lawmakers wrote. "In many cases‚ pharmacies are handing over sensitive medical records without review by a legal professional."The letter also claimed that most of the pharmacy giants have failed to inform patients that their private medical information is being provided to law enforcement agencies despite being legally required to do so.The lawmakers previously contacted the HHS in July‚ demanding the agency increase protections for Americans' medical records by strengthening HIPAA regulations. The oversight inquiry found that privacy practices "vary widely" between various pharmacy companies."All of the pharmacies surveyed stated that they do not require a warrant prior to sharing pharmacy records with law enforcement agents‚ unless there is a state law that dictates otherwise‚" the letter explained. "Those pharmacies will turn medical records over in response to a mere subpoena‚ which often do not have to be reviewed or signed by a judge prior to being issued."Only Amazon Pharmacy stated that it notifies its patients when a law enforcement agency has demanded their medical records‚ the letter stated. CVS Health is the only pharmacy publishing annual transparency reports regarding law enforcement's requests for medical records‚ it added. Walgreen Boots Alliance and the Kroger Company stated they would provide similar reporting.Wyden shared a chart on X detailing the top eight pharmacies' privacy practices. "It turns out that the major pharmacies in the U.S. routinely provide patient medical records to law enforcement without a warrant. The potential ramifications of this for anyone on birth control‚ medication for mental illness or other personal conditions are staggering‚" Wyden stated. It turns out that\u00a0the major\u00a0pharmacies in the U.S.\u00a0routinely\u00a0provide patient medical records to law enforcement without a warrant. The potential ramifications of this for anyone on birth control‚ medication for mental illness or other personal conditions are staggering. — (@) CVS Health told the Washington Post that its policies align with HIPAA. The spokesperson noted that its team is "trained on how to appropriately respond to lawful requests from regulatory agencies and law enforcement.""We have suggested a warrant or judge-issued subpoena requirement be considered and we look forward to working cooperatively with Congress to strengthen patient privacy protections‚" a CVS Health spokesperson told the Post.According to the spokesperson‚ most law enforcement requests are confidential‚ preventing the pharmacy from alerting its patients. However‚ for those without a confidentiality requirement‚ the pharmacy considers "on a case-by-case basis whether it's appropriate to notify the individual." A Walgreens spokesperson told the Post that the company abides by HIPAA policies and takes its "customers' privacy seriously as well as our obligation to law enforcement."An Amazon Pharmacy spokesperson told the Post that it cooperates with law enforcement requests as required. The spokesperson noted that those requests "represent a very small percentage of the prescriptions we fill for customers."Rite Aid declined to comment‚ the Post reported. The HHS and the other pharmacy companies did not respond to a request for comment from The Hill or the Washington Post.Like Blaze News? Barack and Michelle Obama blasted over movie they produced in which character warns against trusting 'white people'

Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama are being blasted on social media over a new movie they produced in which a character warns against trusting "white people."What are the details? The scene is from Netflix's apocalyptic film "Leave the World Behind‚" which the Obamas co-produced through their Higher Ground company — an outfit that focuses on projects about race‚ class‚ democracy‚ and civil rights‚ Newsweek said. The movie shows a mixed-race daughter telling her black father‚ "I'm asking you to remember that if the world falls apart‚ trust should not be doled out easily to anyone‚ especially white people — even mom would agree with me on that." — (@) The deal is that a cyberattack has driven the world into chaos. A white family is renting a home on Long Island — and the father and daughter from the above scene show up to the house after a power outage in New York City‚ tell the white family they're the owners of the home they're renting‚ and ask if they can work out a deal to take refuge in the house as well. The social commentary aspect is that Julia Roberts — who plays the wife and mother of the renters — comes across as racist for seeming surprised that black people could own such a stunning home. It's not as though the Obamas weren't aware of the racism element or the scene in which the daughter tells her father that white people shouldn't be trusted too easily. In fact‚ Barack Obama gave notes to director Sam Esmail on his adapted screenplay‚ according to Vanity Fair.“In the original drafts of the script‚ I definitely pushed things a lot farther than they were in the film‚ and President Obama‚ having the experience he does have‚ was able to ground me a little bit on how things might unfold in reality‚” Esmail told the magazine. “I am writing what I think is fiction‚ for the most part‚ I’m trying to keep it as true to life as possible‚ but I’m exaggerating and dramatizing. And to hear an ex-president say you’re off by a few details. ... I thought I was off by a lot! The fact that he said that scared the f*** out of me.”How have folks been reacting?More than a few notable people are reacting negatively to the don't-trust-white-people scene — and the fact that the Obamas produced the film and knew about script details:"White people are the only group you’re allowed and celebrated to be racist towards‚ and it will be put into movies by the most influential people‚" Libs of TikTok noted."This is unacceptable‚" conservative social media figure Liz Churchill wrote. "I would say the same thing if they said this about people of colour. How is this okay?"Podcaster Kyle Becker noted‚ "If you don’t support hatred against white people‚ then you’re a racist.""Imagine replacing 'white' with 'black‚'" the Western Journal wrote. "All hell would break loose."Others agreed:"They really produced it?" another commenter asked. "Dang‚ I watched it this week and yes‚ they portrayed the white characters as racist and dumb. I fell asleep at one point‚ and the ending was bad‚ too.""Of course they did‚" another commenter said. "Anything to divide the country.""They're not even hiding it anymore‚" another user declared. The other side of the argumentBut there's another perspective out there regarding the scene — taken in context with the movie as a whole. Journalist Brian Krassenstein took issue with all the Obama bashing and said that both families begin to trust each other and work together by the end of the movie."The whole moral of the story is to show how ridiculous our preconceived judgments of one another are‚ both white and black‚" Krassenstein wrote. — (@) When an X user asked Krassenstein‚ "Can you imagine Trump and Melania producing a movie with the phrase 'especially black people' in it though. You have to see the double standard here‚ it’s so blatantly obvious."But Krassenstein replied‚ "If the movie concluded the way this one did I would praise it."Anything else?Bloomberg on Tuesday reported that "Leave the World Behind" — which began streaming Friday — is Netflix’s No. 1 picture globally‚ sits at the top position in 85 countries‚ and is the Obamas' first "hit" film.Like Blaze News?
