Morning Brief: Congress Cuts Funding For PBS & NPR, Biden’s Decline Investigated, Fed Meeting

The House pulls the plug on NPR and PBS in a late-night funding fight as President Donald Trump’s plan gets final approval. Another top Biden aide pleads the Fifth in a congressional hearing about the former president’s competency. And we talk to the president of the Chicago Fed about the upcoming interest rate vote and the feud between Trump and Powell. It’s Friday, July 18, and this is the news you need to know to start your day. Morning Wire is available on video! You can watch today’s episode here:  If you’d rather listen to your news, today’s edition of the Morning Wire podcast can be heard below: Congress Approves Funding Cuts To PBS & NPR Topline: In the early hours of Friday morning, the House gave final approval to President Trump’s plan to claw back $9 billion in funding to global aid and government-funded media after the Senate narrowly passed a measure early Thursday. It now heads to Trump’s desk. In June, the White House formally requested that Congress rescind $1.1 billion in funding that had already been allocated for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS. Early Thursday morning, after hours of debate, the Senate voted 51-48 to approve the measure.  Democrats say NPR and PBS represent America’s commitment to a free press and provide essential services for all people, particularly those in rural communities. They also argue that public broadcasting plays a major role in emergency preparedness and community safety. “When a flood happens, when a tornado touches down, when a hurricane makes landfall, people need immediate, up-to-date alerts to stay safe,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer(D-NY) argued in a speech on the Senate floor. “All too often, public broadcasting is the only way for people to hear what’s going on. It’s a matter of life and death.” Republicans say that’s a ridiculous argument given how many ways people now receive warnings about natural disasters. “All broadcasters are required to broadcast emergency alerts,” Tim Graham, host of NewsBusters at the Media Research Center told The Daily Wire. “Today, everybody’s going to get emergency alerts on their cell phone. So the idea that you need NPR to learn of a flash flood alert – I mean, first of all, you have to assume that there’s a huge number of people listening to NPR at 10 p.m. … It’s just not true.” Republicans have argued for decades that NPR and PBS are not balanced news sources and that both organizations lean heavily to the Left. “Recently, we counted labels,” Graham told The Daily Wire. “[The PBS Newshour] used ‘far-Right’ labels 42 times as often as they used ‘far-Left’ … And the interesting thing here was that Donald Trump got elected with a Republican Congress, they could see the writing on the wall, and PBS and NPR made no attempt to move to the center to try to be fairer, to try to be more balanced. If anything, they have doubled down in 2025. They were basically suggesting they didn’t care what the Republican opinion was on their product.” Biden WH Aide Pleads The Fifth In Congressional Testimony Topline: Former first lady Jill Biden’s top aide testified to Congress on Wednesday. Anthony Bernal, who has been close to the Biden family since 2008, pleaded the Fifth seven times in response to investigators’ questions. Bernal, Jill Biden’s chief of staff, refused to answer a slate of questions around former president Biden’s health – instead invoking his Constitutional right to avoid self-incrimination. Bernal was a top trusted aide in the Biden White House – Jill often referred to him as her “work husband.” When asked by the House Oversight Committee if President Biden was fit to exercise his duties, Bernal said, “On the advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer the question pursuant to my Fifth Amendment rights under the Constitution.” Last week, Biden’s White House doctor Kevin O’Connor refused to answer questions, citing his Fifth Amendment rights and doctor-patient privilege. Legally, invoking the Fifth is not an admission of guilt, and most criminal lawyers highly discourage their clients from sharing anything with authorities that might conceivably be used against them. Nevertheless, many Republicans are concerned about the concerted coverup of Joe Biden’s cognitive decline and want to know who was running the Biden administration if he wasn’t. In their book, “Original Sin,” a deep dive into the Biden White House and his re-election effort, Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson described Bernal as “[one of] the Bidens’ eyes and ears, the keepers of the flame, the protectors of the myth. … As we researched this book, it was difficult to find many Bernal defenders. … He freely trash-talked senior, mid-level and junior aides. … Some described him as the worst person they had ever met.” Despite their reticence, Bernal and O’Connor could be compelled to testify by Congress – if they were offered immunity for any crimes revealed by their testimony, then the Fifth Amendment’s protection against self-incrimination would no longer apply, although in O’Connor’s case, doctor-patient privilege could shield him from certain questions. Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) told Fox News that Bernal could not say that Biden was mentally well without lying under oath, which is why he pleaded the Fifth. Comer also suggested that he would like to see more of Biden’s inner circle testify before his committee, including Jill Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris. Federal Reserve Meeting Topline: As President Trump ramps up pressure on Fed Chair Jerome Powell, the Fed is preparing for a meeting at the end of the month to decide whether to cut interest rates – as the president is demanding. Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee, a voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), spoke to The Daily Wire shortly before the upcoming July 29-30 meeting and offered his perspective on current economic data. Goolsbee described the latest inflation data as “a little bit of a mixed bag,” noting positive trends in services and housing inflation, but expressing wariness about “actual physical goods” where “tariffs are going to increase the prices a bit.” Despite this, he remains “still hopeful that we’re in a pretty solid place on the economy,” citing sustained growth and “close to full employment” as key strengths, with the primary goal being to keep “inflation on path back to 2 percent.” A public dispute between President Trump and Fed Chair Jerome Powell has brought the issue of central bank independence into sharp focus. Goolsbee, while unable to speak for the entire Fed, voiced his unease about such arguments. He emphasized that the reason “all the rich countries of the world have an independent central bank – that’s independent of political interference – is precisely because if you look at places where they don’t have central bank independence, inflation is higher, unemployment is higher, growth is worse.” He underscored the imperative that interest rate decisions “should be rooted in that dual mandate: stabilizing prices and maximizing employment,” adding, “That’s the critical element, should be economic conditions that drive the decisions.” Regarding the immediate outlook for interest rates, Goolsbee maintained his usual cautious stance ahead of the meeting and further data, stating, “I don’t like tying our hands before the meetings.” However, he indicated a general inclination toward lower rates if conditions allow. He noted that his view prior to April 2 was that “we got pretty close to stable full employment. We got inflation trending down to 2% — and in an environment like that, I think rates can go down a fair bit more than from where they are today.”

House Judiciary: Biden Admin Bankrolled Groups Working To Topple Netanyahu

The House Judiciary Committee is accusing the Biden-Harris administration of providing grant funds to groups that contributed to anti-judicial reform groups seeking to undermine Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in 2023. “Documents obtained during this investigation suggest that the Biden-Harris administration potentially funded groups with ties to U.S.-designated terrorist organizations,” the Committee declared. “Israeli NGO Blue White Future received funds from NGOs—including some U.S. grant recipients—and funded the coalition headquarters for the anti-Netanyahu judicial reform protest,” the Committee noted. “The Biden-Harris Administration provided $42,000 to an Israeli NGO, Movement for Quality Government, to conduct ‘Civic Activism Training’ in Israeli high schools. U.S. nonprofit PEF Israel Endowment Funds provided over $884 million to groups involved in anti-democracy protests in Israel. U.S. nonprofit Jewish Communal Fund (JCF) provided over $42.8 million to the anti-Netanyahu protest headquarters in Israel and the protests’ two main funders.” In the Committee’s memo, it targeted the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors — which received $20 million in grants from USAID between 2021 and 2024 — stating that the group gave $187,000 between 2021 and 2024 to PEF Israel Endowment Funds, which helped fund the NGO Blue and White Future (BWF), a “radical anti-Netanyahu organization.” “During this period, RPA donated $557,000 to its affiliate and partner, Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF),” the Committee stated. “In 2023, RBF donated more than $370,000 to groups directly involved in the anti-Netanyahu judicial reform protests … From 2017 to 2022, RBF donated $190,000 to Defense for International Children Palestine (DCI-P), designated by the Israeli Defense Ministry as a terrorist organization in 2021. DCI-P’s board and staff is made up of ‘numerous individuals with alleged ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a terrorist organization, designated as such by the US,  EU, Canada and Israel.” “Since 2016, the Bayader Association for Environment and Development, an NGO based in Gaza, has received at least $900,000 in U.S. government funding despite ‘openly collaborating with Hamas officials, including holding joint events with Hamas leaders,” the Committee wrote. “USAID also funded the Unlimited Friends Association (UFA), another Gaza-based NGO that provides financial support to the families of ‘martyrs’ killed while carrying out terrorist attacks in Israel.”

Duck Steals The Spotlight Just As The Bride Is About To Walk Down The Aisle

Brides plan for their special day in the spotlight. They should be the center of attention as they walk down the aisle toward matrimony. In most cases, that walk becomes the showcase of the wedding photo album and video clips. However, when you have an outdoor wedding, you can’t tell the resident duck that she is not the real bride. @miche8_ No because why did it walk directly to her spot #wedding #destinationwedding #funnywedding #copenhagenwedding #weddingtok #weddingceremony #bride #weddingaisle ♬ Here Comes the Bride – Kashido & Artlist Classics When this female duck made her appearance, all eyes were on her majestic waddle down the aisle. The “Wedding March” played in the background. Wedding guests giggled and pulled out their cell phone cameras. Even the groom got a laugh. The duck was confident that she absolutely belonged there. When she reached the front, she stopped and turned to face the groom. She knew she was in her rightful place. This was not the only wedding that nature’s party animals crashed. Dan and Maggie were saying their vows at Decatur House in Washington, D.C., when an entire family of ducks crashed their wedding. A mama duck waddled in with 11 ducklings in tow. All eyes were on the ducks, including the bride and groom. @syydd_knee the real guests have arrived. #wedding #weddingcrashers #ducks #ceremony ♬ cinnamon girl lana del rey – lana del rey ୨୧ In a masterful video posted by Yara Dragt Photography, an army of white ducks crash the scene. The bride and groom try to shoo the ducks away. Suddenly, the entire flock looked like they got caught with their beaks in the cookie jar. They quickly scampered off, as if they’d just received a mission from a higher power. @yaradragtphotography they weren’t invited but they stole the show anyway #weddingtok #ducksoftiktok #trouwfotograaf #weddinginspiration #photographerlife #weddingphotographer ♬ The Winner Is… – DeVotchKa Version – DeVotchKa Outdoor weddings are very popular in the summer months. With perfect weather and a gentle breeze, an outdoor wedding has a magical vibe that is hard to replicate. The only unfortunate part is that you cannot control the arrival of uninvited guests. ‘I’m Not Going to Lie’: Louisiana Pastor Fired From Public Library over Trans Pronouns

Last week, a Christian pastor in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, found himself fired from his job at the local public library after he refused to use the preferred pronouns of a co-worker who identified as the opposite sex. The firing occurred despite a growing legal precedent supporting the free speech rights of those who say they cannot be forced to utter language that they believe is wrong. On July 7, Luke Ash, who serves as lead pastor of Stevendale Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, had a conversation with a co-worker at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library about an individual who was in training. After being informed that the female individual preferred to be called “he,” Ash continued to use biologically accurate pronouns in reference to her. When Ash’s co-worker attempted to “correct” him into using the individual’s preferred pronouns, the pastor declined to use them. After being reprimanded by his supervisor for violating the library’s code of conduct, Ash received notice that his job was terminated on July 10. The issue of compelled speech surrounding transgender identities involving the usage of pronouns contrary to an individual’s biological sex has been at the center of immense controversy for at least the last decade. The issue reached a new level of cultural visibility in 2016, when Canadian psychologist and college professor Jordan Peterson released a series of viral YouTube videos that criticized a Canadian law that classified the refusal to use transgender pronouns as discrimination against those who identify as trans, saying that the law violated civil rights by compelling speech. In the years since, numerous individuals have lost jobs over their refusal to use trans pronouns in the U.S. and the U.K. People like Peter Vlaming, a high school teacher in West Point, Virginia, who was fired in 2018 for refusing to refer to a student with trans pronouns, chose to fight back and filed a lawsuit against the public school district for wrongful termination over his religious beliefs not to use pronouns at odds with biological sex. Last year, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled in Vlaming’s favor, and the West Point School Board agreed to settle with Vlaming for $575,000. Despite the rising legal precedent toward freedom of speech and religion in states like Virginia, people like Ash are finding themselves swiftly out of jobs over an entrenched gender ideology in the public education and library sectors, even in red states like Louisiana. “There were several things that were happening at the library to make me know that this was not a place that was necessarily hospitable for a Christian or even a conservatively-minded person, but I just kind of kept my mouth shut and just tried to do a good job and respect everybody that came my way,” Ash explained during Tuesday’s edition of “Washington Watch with Tony Perkins.” “But, as Jordan Peterson kind of famously said in a thing that went viral, there’s a difference between telling me what I can’t say and then telling me what I have to say, and so that was the line for me at that point.” Ash went on to state that his rationale for not using trans pronouns was simple: “I’m not going to lie. I cannot do it. I will not do it.” The pastor further observed that his firing over trans ideology was in line with a thinly veiled pattern within the library of a bias against all things conservative. “They’re very clever,” he explained. “They think it’s a sin to ‘ban’ books, and if you talk about banning books, putting a book on a list, then that’s well within their wheelhouse to call you a Nazi or whatever. But they’re absolutely limiting access to books by which books they decide to purchase for the library or even on the promotion of [the] books displayed. So there’s a continuum of access. It’s not just about banning a book on a piece of paper. If you can pretend that that book doesn’t exist, that’s even more effective.” Ash also pointed out that despite the declining popularity of public libraries due to the rise in audiobooks and ubiquitous internet access, libraries still largely act as a community and cultural hub in most cities, even as they emphasize LGBTQ+ Pride material for children and young adults, including Drag Queen Story Hours. “[T]hey’re trying to pivot so that they can still continue to have a purpose for existing as a community center,” he noted. “In a lot of ways … they are trying to replace the local church as a community center. The main library in Baton Rouge Parish has stained glass in it. Instead of doing Vacation Bible School, we have [the] summer reading program. Obviously, we want our children to read, but we don’t want the library to be taking the place of the local church.” Still, the pull toward holding down a secure career in a taxpayer-funded public library is something that is very appealing even for conservative Christians, the pastor acknowledged. But in the end, he underscored, God must be honored above all things. “Jesus said you have to serve God or mammon,” he emphasized. “And a lot of times there is a fork in the road, and we decide to compromise for the sake of mammon. And I think that we’re very good at being lawyers to ourselves and deceiving ourselves into saying, ‘You know what? What I’m doing is actually the more loving thing … if I just concede on this thing, I’m actually being more loving.’ And I would just say no. The loving thing is to tell the truth. Jesus said that he’s the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the father except through him. And so if we back off of the truth, then we back off the visibility of anything at all—but especially Jesus.” As to what advice Ash would give to others who may find themselves in his position, the pastor urged believers not to be afraid to engage the culture if the moment calls for it. “There are those who would say, ‘You’re going to have to choose a lane between being a culture warrior or a pastor or a culture warrior and a Christian.’ And I would just say, we don’t go out looking for a fight, but those who desire to live godly [lives] will suffer persecution. And whenever it comes time to fight, find a group of happy warriors and go to battle.” Originally published by The Washington Stand The post ‘I’m Not Going to Lie’: Louisiana Pastor Fired From Public Library over Trans Pronouns appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Astronomers Spot a Rare Object Way Beyond Neptune

Astronomers just found a new object way out in our Solar System, and it’s giving us hints about what things were like billions of years ago. This object, called 2023 KQ14 or “Ammonite,” is like a space rock that orbits super far from the Sun. It was spotted using powerful telescopes and written about in a science journal Nature Astronomy. Ammonite is what scientists call a trans-Neptunian object (TNO). That’s a fancy name for stuff that orbits the Sun way past Neptune, the farthest big planet in our Solar System. Think of the Solar System as a giant playground with the Sun in the middle. Planets like Earth are pretty close to the Sun, but Ammonite is super far away. Even at its closest point to the Sun, called the perihelion, it’s 66 times farther than Earth is from the Sun. That’s about 6 billion miles away! To measure that distance, scientists use something called an astronomical unit (au), where 1 au is the distance from Earth to the Sun. So, Ammonite’s closest point is 66 au. This space rock is special because it’s a Sedna-like object. That means it’s like another far-out object called Sedna, which has a super stretched-out orbit, like a long, skinny oval instead of a circle. Ammonite’s orbit is huge—it has a semi-major axis of 252 au, which is like the average length of its oval path around the Sun. It also tilts a bit, about 11 degrees, like a slightly slanted racetrack. What’s cool is that Ammonite’s orbit fits into a gap scientists didn’t understand before. They call this the q-gap, which is just a missing spot in the distances where they expected to find objects like this. Finding Ammonite is like finding a missing puzzle piece that helps make the picture clearer. Spotting Ammonite was tough because it’s so far away and really dim, like trying to see a tiny candle from miles away at night. It’s probably about the size of a small moon, but it’s so distant that astronomers needed super strong telescopes to find it. Their hard work paid off because Ammonite’s orbit has stayed the same for 4.5 billion years—that’s as old as the Solar System! It’s like a time capsule that hasn’t been bumped around by planets like Neptune, so it can tell us what things were like when the Solar System was born. The coolest part? Ammonite’s weird orbit might be a clue about something big out there, like a mysterious Planet Nine that nobody’s seen yet. Scientists think a big planet or a group of objects might have pushed Ammonite into its path long ago, kind of like how a big kid might nudge a smaller one on the playground. The study doesn’t prove Planet Nine exists, but it makes scientists wonder. The post Astronomers Spot a Rare Object Way Beyond Neptune appeared first on Anomalien.com.

Enough Epstein. We’re finally living through the conservative revolution we’ve always needed.

If you spend an inordinate amount of time online — doomscrolling, podcast-hopping, and trading theories with your pals on Signal — you might be fixated on every twist in the Jeffrey Epstein saga. Or maybe you’ve convinced yourself that the transgender sports fight doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of American politics. That would be a serious mistake.Conservatives are finally acting like revolutionaries, while prominent Democrat mayors are screeching and sobbing in the streets. You’d be missing the most significant conservative revolution Washington has seen in decades — maybe ever.Start with sports. The right’s victory in pushing back transgender ideology on this front marks a turning point. Not just because it helps women’s athletics. Not even because it polls well.It matters because it's the first real cultural win for truth over lies I've seen in my adult life. And without that kind of victory — without truth — nothing else can be fixed. It might feel strange or even deflating to call broad public agreement on something so obvious a "major victory." But consider what has happened.Picture a living Joseph Stalin stepping to a podium and admitting: Yes, the mass graves are real. The people already knew — they had lived it. But for years, they were forced to lie or risk losing their livelihoods. That’s what Americans experienced just last year. We lived under a giant, state-sanctioned falsehood. This country has a habit of moving on too quickly from moral failure. But conservatives shouldn’t forget what it felt like to endure the Democrats’ four-year crusade.Welfare rolls soared. Government job numbers got a boost — from foreign workers. White men ages 50 to 65 could not get hired. The border stood wide open. And crime? It was tolerated, even sanctified, as if letting it happen was an act of charity. In the six months since his inauguration, Donald Trump has sealed the border. On a shoestring budget, his administration launched raids up and down the country, striking fear into the hearts of illegal immigrants nationwide to the point that we’re seeing serious self-deportations.The White House fired or bought out more than 100,000 federal bureaucrats, made the largest tax cut in U.S. history permanent — even with a geriatric Senate that still leans on liberal Republicans — and proved that America can hit its enemies hard without getting dragged into nation-building.That same tax cut included $75 billion for interior immigration enforcement. Just two weeks ago!Think about this: The Republican Party has held the White House and both chambers of Congress three times since before 9/11, an atrocity committed by illegal aliens. This is the first time the GOP has used that power to deliver real results.During the previous two trifectas, Republican leaders pursued amnesty.Amnesty!Over the past six months, this administration has forced NATO to bow, won case after case at the Supreme Court against activist judges who imagine themselves kings, and finally pulled the plug on PBS and NPR.That last one? A Republican campaign promise for decades. No one ever meant it — until now.The White House just passed a tax law that allows companies to put $10,000 or $10 billion into building industrial infrastructure — and write 100% of it off on their taxes. The administration made colleges rescind fake records set unfairly by men competing in women’s sports — and offer apologies to those women who were wronged. It froze tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer funds headed to liberal universities and sued them for racial discrimination.Former CIA director and Russiagate hoax ringleader John Brennan is fuming on TV. Top staff for Joe Biden are on video pleading the Fifth Amendment to hide potentially criminal activity in the last administration. The White House has completely redrawn America’s trade regime. There are tariffs across the board, with harsher penalties for countries flooding cheap garbage manufactured by near-slave labor into U.S. markets. So far, few countries have risked any sort of retaliation, and our country’s economy has yet to suffer any serious consequences.Birthright citizenship — long treated as sacrosanct in political debate — is finally on the chopping block. And few Americans are remotely bothered about it.This administration has also taken on the vaccine-industrial complex. For the first time ever, the Department of Health and Human Services is investigating the explosion in autism rates. When Big Pharma corporatists in white coats pushed back, the administration didn’t flinch. It fired them from the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Fired.President Trump also did what no Western leader would: He called out the South African government’s campaign of land seizures and government-incited murder. While Pretoria wraps itself in the legacy of Nelson Mandela, it has driven a once-prosperous nation to ruin. Trump opened the door to the Boers without apology.Meanwhile, polls are up among Hispanics and black men. Up! While the internet-obsessed kvetch endlessly that the president didn’t break court orders to unseal names of the accused on Epstein Island, a CNN poll this week found Republican approval for him rose two points to 88%. At the same time, a Quinnipiac Poll found that the number had risen three points to 90%. Ninety percent! In the culture, conservatives have the top comedians and some of the coolest actors. Conservatives have finally realized they don’t need to defend the American institutions that loathe the right — they need to train their fire on those institutions.Conservatives are finally acting like revolutionaries, prominent Democrat mayors are screeching and sobbing in the streets, and when violent left-wing mobs try to barricade police stations, the police open the doors and charge out — then mock them. When 11 kitted-up, armed, and masked Antifa members launched a terror attack on a Texas detention center for illegal aliens, they were routed, hunted down, and arrested by police. Not special forces — frontline cops and agents.Democrats and their allies are scattered, demoralized, and afraid. The influence of Hollywood and the corporate media is at an all-time low. They are cringey. So set aside the Signal chat and step away from social media. This is the moment so many have been waiting for — we’re living in it. And we’re not tired of winning.Blaze News: 'Democrats clearly weren't prepared': Blaze News contributor schools libs on border crisis in fiery hearingJD Vance: Rekindling statesmanship to secure America’s golden futureSign up for Bedford’s newsletterSign up to get Blaze Media senior politics editor Christopher Bedford’s newsletter.
