Glacier Melting Destroys Climate Data‚ Disrupting Ice Archive Plans

Scientists have had to stop using the Corbassière glacier in Valais‚ Switzerland‚ as a record of the changing climate‚ because the climate has changed too much. Much of what we know about the Earth’s climate‚ we have learned from ice. Glaciers capture bubbles of air that reveal atmospheric concentrations of gasses when the ice formed. Isotopes of oxygen in the water molecules provide clues to temperatures at the time. Pollutants trapped in the ice contain their own information. Together‚ these inspire climatologists to travel to Greenland‚ Antarctica‚ and the tops of mountains to obtain ice cores. However‚ they only work because ice is laid down in layers each winter. These‚ like the rings of trees‚ provide information on the events of that particular year – if the layers cannot be distinguished‚ the ice ceases to serve its purpose.      Some ice sheets record the climate over hundreds of thousands of years‚ but the ice in the Corbassière is of much more recent ilk. Near its top‚ it consists of firn: a stage in the process of snow becoming ice. An average of 2 meters (7 feet) of firn from each year between 2011 and 2018 is found at Corbassière‚ allowing for much greater resolution than most locations.Summer winds bring pollution in the form of ammonium‚ nitrate‚ and sulfate to the Alps‚ where they are deposited on glaciers like Corbassière. Colder winter air rises less‚ and concentrations of these particulates fall. When Paul Scherrer Institute PhD student Carla Huber and Professor Margit Schwikowski studied a 14-meter (49-foot) core collected in 2018‚ they could see the previous seven years in outstanding detail. Yet an 18-meter (59-foot) 2020 core produced very different results‚ with lower trace concentrations‚ and far less seasonal variation.Huber‚ Schwikowski‚ and colleagues conclude recent summers have gotten so hot that the glacier melted so deeply that even layers buried beneath meters of firn were affected. Deposits from different seasons mixed‚ leading to smoothing out‚ Moreover‚ some of the meltwater drained away‚ causing gaps in the glacier to sink to the bottom. “Apparently the water there did not freeze again‚ concentrating the trace substances‚” said Schwikowski in a statement. “But instead it drained off and literally washed them away.”The team compared the process to a library break-in where pieces of different books get mixed up‚ and some are stolen altogether. This would be worrying enough for the future if Grand Combin‚ from which the glacier flows‚ had experienced some freak event. However‚ the nearest weather stations indicate it did not. Instead‚ it has simply warmed in line with the global average."From this we conclude that there was no singular trigger for this strong melting‚ but that it resulted from many warm years in the recent past‚" Schwikowski said. "It seems a threshold has been crossed‚ which now has led to a comparatively strong effect."      It’s yet another example of how the effects of climate change are surprising even those who have been studying it for decades‚ and seldom in a good way. "For a long time it has been clear that the glacier tongues are retreating. But we would not have thought that the areas feeding high alpine glaciers would also be so severely affected – that is‚ their highest part‚ where the ice replenishment is formed‚" Schwikowski said.Schwikowski is part of a project by the Ice Memory Foundation seeking to collect cores from 20 endangered glaciers before they melt‚ and store them in a global climate archive. Corbassière was to be one of these. The 2018 core may still be included‚ but Schwikowski says much of the 2020 core is now useless. The transition between hard and soft layers as a result of melting and refreezing almost destroyed a very expensive drill bit. Plans to drill much deeper to collect thousands of years' worth of data were abandoned."At the Grand Combin‚ we're already too late." Schwikowski said. It's possible that nearby glaciers could take Corbassière’s place in the archive‚ but with all but two of the Alps’ glaciers starting at lower altitudes‚ the rest may be similarly affected.Footage of the spectacular retreat of many glaciers has become a symbol and warning of global heating – but even where the effects are not visible to the naked eye‚ the consequences may still be serious.“The threat of glacial-archived information being lost forever is a major challenge faced by the scientific community‚ as it forms one of the best records of past climatic and environmental changes‚” the paper on the situation notes. The study is published open access in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Newly Discovered Lupus Trigger Traced Back To Single Mutation

The speed and voracity with which our innate immune system responds to invaders is great – until it turns against us. That happens in autoimmune conditions like lupus‚ and researchers have been trying to better understand how the system gets so out of control. In a new study‚ not only have scientists identified a new control mechanism that can trigger lupus‚ but also traced it back to a single genetic mutation. The team‚ based at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology‚ focused on Toll-like receptor-7 (TLR7); this is a protein found in immune cells that acts as a sensor for the genetic material of viruses and bacteria. When detected‚ the receptor triggers an immune response. However‚ for this response to happen quickly and with appropriate strength‚ immune cells are constantly producing and degrading receptors to maintain a balanced number of them. Too many‚ and things can go wrong‚ increasing the chance of the immune cells reacting against the body’s own cells and leading to lupus.“From earlier experiments in mice carried out a few years ago at the University of Berkeley in California‚ we already knew that too many of these receptors are a problem‚” explained group leader Olivia Majer in a statement. To figure out how a cell could end up with too many receptors‚ Majer and the team looked toward the molecules that help to break them down. In doing so‚ they identified a protein complex called BORC and demonstrated that this requires another protein‚ UNC93B1‚ in order to degrade TLR7.Neither BORC nor UNC93B1 had previously been associated with lupus‚ but thanks to lupus specialist Fabian Hauck and a patient at the Ludwig Maximilian University Hospital in Munich‚ the team’s findings were confirmed; the patient had a single mutation in the gene encoding UNC93B1.“When I got the first call from Fabian Hauck‚ I thought it was too good to be true‚” says Majer‚ “but within eight busy weeks of joined effort‚ we were able to confirm that the mutation in UNC93B1 was the cause of this patient’s lupus.”Lupus is estimated to affect at least 5 million people worldwide. Due to the immune system attacking the body’s own tissue‚ it can result in symptoms ranging from fatigue and skin rashes to severe damage to the lungs and kidneys. Actress and singer Selena Gomez was diagnosed with lupus in her early 20s‚ and received a kidney transplant back in 2017 due to the effects of the disease. It’s hoped that by identifying this new mechanism and the role of UNC93B1‚ testing for mutations in the protein could become a new part of lupus treatment. With further research‚ it may even represent a new therapeutic target for minimizing or stopping the damage caused by the disease in the first place. The study is published in the journal Science Immunology.

Pentagon report warns US is unable to defend against UFOs

A secret document has revealed that the Pentagon is worried about the possibility of UFOs attacking the US and the world‚ reports dailymail.co.uk. The document‚ which was made public by the Office of Inspector General (OIG)‚ says that the US does not have enough resources to track and analyze unidentified flying objects (UFOs) that could pose a danger to the military and national security. The document is titled “Evaluation of the DoD’s Actions Regarding Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena” and it states that UFOs‚ whether they are from another planet or not‚ are a serious threat that needs more attention. The document acknowledges that it is very hard to prepare for an attack from an unknown enemy with unknown capabilities and intentions. It also admits that it is possible that some UFOs could be invisible or undetectable by current technology. “DoD efforts to identify and understand UAP has been irregular because of competing priorities‚ lack of substantive progress‚ and inconclusive findings. However‚ military pilots have continued to report UAP incidents despite the sporadic efforts of the DoD to identify‚ report‚ and analyze the events.” “The DoD has not issued a comprehensive UAP response plan that identifies roles‚ responsibilities‚ requirements‚ and coordination procedures for detecting‚ reporting‚ collecting‚ analyzing‚ and identifying UAP incidents.” “As a result‚ the DoD response to UAP incidents is uncoordinated and concentrated within each Military Department.” “DoD Components have largely excluded geographic combatant commands‚ which are responsible for detecting‚ deterring‚ and preventing threats and attacks against the United States and its territories‚ possessions‚ and bases in their respective areas of responsibility‚ in developing UAP policies and procedures.” The document urges the Department of Defense (DoD) to improve its UFO reporting and analysis system and to share more information with other agencies and allies. It also recommends more research and training on how to deal with UFO encounters and potential attacks. The document is one of the few official sources that confirm the Pentagon’s interest and concern about UFOs. It also shows that the US government is taking the UFO phenomenon seriously and not dismissing it as a hoax or a fantasy. Tax-Funded PBS‚ NPR Eagerly Push Planned Parenthood 'Study' of Rapes and Abortion

PBS and NPR are funded by taxpayers – federal‚ state‚ and local. But they’re “owned” by the Left. Look no further than a very biased Planned Parenthood study fishing numbers out of the air to assert that there were more than 64‚000 “people” who became pregnant from rapes in red states with abortion bans. No one who would criticize or even question this effort was allowed on air. The stories were unanimous. On Thursday‚ the PBS NewsHour brought on Dr. Samuel Dickman to discuss his study‚ published by the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. Anchor John Yang pointed out that Dickman is chief medical officer for Planned Parenthood of Montana. Yang asked “Is there anything in what you found in your study that surprised you?” and then added “you're saying that this could actually be an undercount.” Notice Dr. Dickman admitted "these are just estimates." Yang continued with the facilitation: "Why did you undertake this study?" And: "As we mentioned‚ there are five states that do have exceptions for rape‚ but under very tight restrictions. Given those restrictions‚ how meaningful are those exceptions?" This PBS-pampered abortionist said they were meaningless. The PBS NewsHour website provided a second promotion‚ an article by health reporter Laura Santhanam that was just as one-sided. On Wednesday‚ NPR’s comically named All Things Considered aired a story by reporter/abortion advocate Selena Simmons-Duffin that never considered any critics. Instead‚ the soundbites came from the doctor from Planned Parenthood – oh‚ wait‚ the reporter never mentioned Planned Parenthood‚ Dr. Dickman was just an “abortion provider” – another doctor endorsing the research named Rachel Perry‚ and a rape victim that guessed this was an undercount. For an opposing viewpoint‚ Michael New trashed this research at National Review:  First‚ the authors of the study claim that approximately 12.5 percent of rapes result in a conception. That is an exceptionally high figure. The results of a survey of over 4‚000 women that was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1996 puts that figure at closer to 5 percent. Furthermore‚ the 5 percent figure cited in this 1996 journal article is probably high because several survey respondents reported being raped more than once. Second‚ there are extremely wide disparities in reported rape statistics. The authors use data from the CDC’s 2016–17 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey‚ which estimated that over 1.4 million women were the victims of a completed forcible rape during a twelve-month period. That is over four times higher than the estimates provided by the Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey and over ten times higher than FBI data on the number of rapes reported to law enforcement. Furthermore‚ the CDC data have been criticized for significantly overestimating the incidence of rape. Fair-minded researchers would have at least acknowledged these disparities. However‚ the authors of the JAMA Internal Medicine article simply assume that the much higher CDC estimates are the most accurate. They want you to think that "public broadcasting" is so professional that it thoroughly reviews "studies" like these. But the actual stories suggest they are barely considered "rip and read" segments that amount to a press release. They weren't alone: New pointed out "This study was quickly and uncritically covered by a number of mainstream media outlets including CNN‚ NBC News‚ the Houston Chronicle‚ Axios‚ Time‚ and the Huffington Post." NPR transcript is below: NPR's All Things Considered January 24‚ 2024 ARI SHAPIRO: A warning - this next story deals with sexual assault and abortion. A new paper out today estimates the number of people who have become pregnant from rape in states with abortion bans. It's nearly 65‚000. NPR's Selena Simmons-Duffin has more. SELENA SIMMONS-DUFFIN: Dr. Samuel Dickman is an abortion provider in Montana. SAMUEL DICKMAN: I have patients routinely who tell me that they're pregnant as a result of rape. SIMMONS-DUFFIN: Dickman began to wonder about patients who became pregnant due to rape in states where abortion is banned‚ so he and a group of colleagues set about to gauge the scope of that problem. The challenge - there is no dataset on the number of rapes that result in pregnancy. DICKMAN: We use the best available research and data that we're aware of to come up with the fraction of women of reproductive age who are survivors of - and the terminology here is horrible - but‚ you know‚ completed vaginal rape. SIMMONS-DUFFIN: They put together survey data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with Bureau of Justice Statistics data and FBI crime reports. They calculated there have been more than half a million rapes in states with abortion bans while those bands were in effect and that those rapes have resulted in 64‚565 pregnancies. Dickman said he and his colleagues were shocked at those numbers. DICKMAN: I was horrified. Sexual assault is incredibly common‚ and I knew that in a general sense. But to be confronted with these estimates that are so high in states where there's no meaningful abortion access -- I mean‚ it's hard to comprehend. SIMMONS-DUFFIN: Dr. Rachel Perry is an OB-GYN and professor at the University of California‚ Irvine‚ who was not involved in the study. She thinks the methods Dickman and his colleagues used to come up with their estimates were appropriate‚ given the lack of concrete data. RACHEL PERRY: Seeing these numbers makes us realize that even if they aren't exact‚ it is a huge problem. SIMMONS-DUFFIN: Certainly‚ not all of the people who become pregnant due to rape want an abortion‚ Perry observes. PERRY: But we do know that those who become pregnant after rape are more likely to choose abortion than to continue their pregnancies. SIMMONS-DUFFIN: Which suggests tens of thousands of Americans have wanted an abortion after a rape and had no access where they lived. Polling consistently shows that most Americans think that someone who is raped and becomes pregnant should have legal access to an abortion‚ yet the majority of states with abortion bans do not include such an exception. Some rape survivors are starting to speak out about the need for easier access to abortion after assault -- survivors like Samantha Hansen. She was a college student at Brigham Young University in 2014 when she was watching Netflix with someone she considered a friend. She went to go pop popcorn in the other room. SAMANTHA HANSEN: When I came back with the popcorn and started sipping my Coke‚ it wasn't too long before I couldn't move a single muscle. SIMMONS-DUFFIN: Weeks later‚ she noticed she'd missed her period‚ and a pregnancy test came back positive. She went to Planned Parenthood to talk through her options. She had decided to continue the pregnancy but ended up having a miscarriage. Still‚ she was grateful to have had the option to end her pregnancy. HANSEN: Having had my autonomy stripped from me that night that I was raped - having the ability to make that choice was so‚ so pivotal to my healing. SIMMONS-DUFFIN: Hansen says the researchers' estimate of 65‚000 pregnancies from rape may surprise some people. HANSEN: I'm not surprised. And if anything‚ I'm over here going‚ it's probably higher. SIMMONS-DUFFIN: She's glad the researchers worked to quantify the number. Selena Simmons-Duffin‚ NPR News.

Nikki Haley’s biggest blunders

Nikki Haley’s biggest blunders

Although Nikki Haley is an articulate‚ highly presentable political performer‚ she also seems clueless about what drives most Republican voters in 2024. This is equally true of her donors‚ including Reid Hoffman‚ the usually reliable Democratic sugar daddy who this year took a chance on the former South Carolina governor. All of them want a return to “normalcy‚” as they define the term‚ which means a more stable version of what we now have‚ without quite so much turmoil on the southern border and‚ of course‚ with a rising stock market. Haley’s persistent complaint about Donald Trump is that he’ll bring “chaos‚” which Nikki and her donors certainly do not want. She is also concerned that Trump “tried to buddy up to dictators‚” whereas Haley wants to fight these distant baddies and shower their liberated subjects with state-of-the-art “human rights.” Nikki Haley and the Never-Trumpers who have rallied to her have no message to match what Trump offers. Unfortunately‚ most Republican voters don’t want these goodies. In fact‚ they have no problem with “chaos” if that means draining the swamp‚ going after the “fake media‚” and making Trump’s enemies pay for weaponizing the government against them. When pollsters asked Republican voters in New Hampshire what they expect a Republican administration to do to improve the political situation‚ the overwhelming response was “curb immigration and overhaul the federal government.” Those who took this position must have known the price they would pay for the “overhaul” would be contending with the deep state‚ the Democratic National Committee‚ and quite possibly mobs incited by the media and financed by woke capitalists. Different priorities What these voters most clearly don’t want is what Nikki Haley‚ Reid Hoffman‚ the Wall Street Journal‚ and Mitch McConnell want to give them: a fine-tuned‚ less malicious version of the government now in power together with military crusades against “dictators.” Trump voters have a very different priority‚ which is fighting and defeating the woke‚ globalist‚ Green New Deal dictatorship under which they live at home. For those of us (and here I include myself) who may have wondered why all those millions of fans who attend his rallies cheer Trump even when he rants on about personal grievances and even when he crudely insults rivals‚ the answer is quite simple. Trump is “fighting” for those who are cheering his words. He lets us know that he is being reviled by the media and bombarded with lawfare because he “stands in the way” of those who are coming after “the American people” — i.e.‚ his voters. His voters are the decent‚ hardworking‚ church-attending Americans who come to his rallies and who shiver in the cold‚ listening on loudspeakers‚ if they can’t make it into the auditorium. Because Trump is there and fighting for them‚ his MAGA supporters will be protected against their most venomous foes in both the media and deep state. Nikki Haley and the Never-Trumpers who have rallied to her and who lavish her with campaign funds have no message to match that. Expressing pride in our “democratic values” and pledging devotion to human rights really doesn’t cut the mustard with today’s right‚ especially if the voters there find themselves being harassed by a government that demeans them socially and treats them as a domestic enemy. George W. Bush-style Republican rhetoric doesn’t resonate with a transformed GOP. For present Republican voters‚ the greatest dangers are internal‚ and the prime enemy is the one who has opened our southern border to invaders and who is using government surveillance agencies to go after political dissenters. What matters to Trump’s voters This is not to say that Trump will necessarily do all that he promises. The last time he was president‚ he didn’t drain the swamp. He also appointed liberal internationalist-type Republicans‚ like Haley‚ Mike Pompeo‚ and John Bolton‚ to conduct U.S. foreign policy. Still‚ living conditions then were better for Trump’s base‚ and there was no deliberate attempt‚ as there is now‚ to flood the country with future Democratic voters. But unless Trump sets out to purge a hostile public administration‚ whatever he and his voters lament will continue to bedevil them. Quite possibly‚ Trump’s base would get what they want programmatically with greater certainty by backing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis‚ someone who represents Trump’s populist views but who articulates them more coherently and in fuller detail. DeSantis as president would also be less likely than Trump to pick fights over personal affronts and would undoubtedly show more gravitas than his former rival for the presidency. But none of that matters to the Republican base‚ which cheers on Trump precisely because he savages those whom his partisans hate. And Trump delights in upping the ante to rile his adversaries. For example‚ when Texas Governor Greg Abbott resisted attempts by the Biden administration to remove razor-wire obstacles to illegal aliens crossing the border‚ almost all Republican dignitaries rushed to Abbott’s defense. But Trump immediately called for more. He urged Republican governors to send their National Guard units to the Texas-Mexico border to aid Abbott against the invasion of illegal aliens that had been unleashed by the Biden administration. Whether that happens remains to be seen. For Trump’s fans‚ however‚ the important thing is his defiant gesture.
