Discrimination when a woman who gave birth was called "mother"

Domestic. According to the Discrimination Ombudsman (DO), a woman who believes she is a man was subjected to discrimination after being called "mother" in her patient record in connection with her childbirth.

In connection with the birth at Nyköping Hospital, the hospital staff respected the woman's request to be called "dad", and a note stating that the woman was actually a man was on the delivery room's whiteboard.

Despite this, the woman is described as "mother" on two occasions in the medical record, something she found offensive.

The woman has also reacted to a survey she received via 1177 after giving birth. The survey was aimed at "pregnant women and new mothers", which she also considered discriminatory.

The region has defended itself by saying that it is currently not technically possible to change the gender designation in all parts of the medical record system. However, the DO states that the woman has been subjected to discrimination.

Following the DO's decision, the region is now investigating the possibility of introducing more alternatives than "mother" into its systems, according to the Siren news agency.
