Joey Belladonna recalls he worked in a barn after being fired from Anthrax

Born in Oswego, New York back in 1960, Joey Belladonna started his musical career in 1984, joining Anthrax during that same year. He was part of all their classic albums like "Spreading the Disease" (1985) and "Among the Living" (1987) until he was fired in 1992. He was replaced by Armored Saint's John Bush until he returned in 2005. But he became an official member again in 2010. In an interview with Music Interview Corner (Transcribed by Blabbermouth), he recalled that he actually worked in a horse barn during his time away from Anthrax. Joey Belladonna recalls he worked in a barn after being fired from Anthrax "Well, for me to be out of the band for that long, it's almost too long. It was unexpected and it wasn't my idea and I wouldn't have preferred it. But it happened. And I just maintained myself. And I was actually working in a horse barn for a couple of years. I was [in] maintenance, and Krista, my wife, we both worked at a pretty famous riders' facility." "I cut grass all day. It was so big there, I couldn't complete all my work each day. It was a long, long day, it took me two, three days to weedy the whole place. A lot of people don't realize that you would even do that. I didn't really necessarily have to do that job. It was one of those things that fell into place and I enjoyed it and I got a lot of experience from it. But I also had a band; I was doing some cover music and I was playing drums." "And it was kind of like the old days for me. So I just continued to do that and work on some original music and stuff. I kept myself busy, I didn't really fall apart, I kept busy and just waited for some time. All of a sudden I'd come back. So here I am," Joey Belladonna said. Since Belladonna returned to the band, they recorded two praised studio albums. They are "Worship Music" (2011) and "For All Kings" (2016). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXYKpKWHxaI&pp=ygUTYnJlYXRoaW5nIGxpZ2h0bmluZw%3D%3DThe post Joey Belladonna recalls he worked in a barn after being fired from Anthrax appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Gene Simmons recalls how Kiss created their makeup

Gene Simmons recalls how Kiss created their makeup

Formed in New York City in 1973 by Ace Frehley, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and Peter Criss, Kiss became one of the most influential hard rock bands of all time. However, it wasn’t just their music that made them iconic—their appearance played a crucial role in their initial success. Using high heels, unusual clothing, and distinctive makeup, they captivated kids and teenagers in the 1970s. But how did they come up with the iconic makeup? Gene Simmons explained in an interview with Michael Franzese (Transcribed by Blabbermouth). Gene Simmons recalls how Kiss created their makeup We've been around 52 years, with different members and all that, because not everybody lasts. And one day, and I've talked about this before, and every time I talk about it, I get the imagery again. We're sitting around in our rat-infested loft, 10 East 23rd Street [in Manhattan], and we'd been rehearsing. It's a rat trap and a fire trap. No windows, nothing. And after the rehearsal, one of us — I don't know who — said, 'Hey, let's go down to Woolworth's,' which was a local store." "You could buy anything. Before there were malls, you'd stick everything into Woolworth's — aspirin, anything, clothing. And there were also gimmicky things… And so we somehow veered towards the Halloween area, and there was clown makeup. Stein's clown white, a jar, and Stein's black lipstick. For some reason, Paul Stanley went to the red lipstick thing — I don't know why — and we just bought the stuff and we bought two mirrors that were four and a half feet tall, about this wide, 15 bucks all in, and brought it up to the loft." "Nobody said, 'I have an idea. Let's sit down. We'll do this.' Like, if you'd look at it, you'd say, 'Okay, who's telling you what to do?' No, it's just happening. We're looking in the mirror, putting on makeup and looking at each other and stuff like that, and just talking. Well, it's kind of weird, it's kind of sticky talking about the feeling of it." Simmons continued: "Then we started drawing designs around the eyes and looking at each other and stuff and getting off on it, kind of, as it was happening. And Peter Criss liked cats, so he was doing that. I was always fascinated by horror movies and sci-fi, that imagery. And Ace always talked about that he's from another planet and stuff. His equilibrium was not all that good, so he would often fall or whatever. So he thought of himself as a spaceman. And Paul Stanley, originally the makeup was a round circle, or black, around his eye. And we looked around, and we go, 'What the hell is that?' And he says, 'It's like Pete, the dog from 'The Little Rascals'.'" "There was a dog in an old black-and-white half-hour thing that went back to Mack Sennett comedies. The beginning of movies, they'd have these short about kids in poor areas. And by the way, it was not segregated. They had black kids and white kids hanging out together like friends. Yeah, but in regular civilization, well, no, black and white is supposed to be separate. Not with our gang; they were just black and white friends. Buckwheat and Stymie, yeah. Great names. And the dog was part of it, and he'd have a black circle. And we went, 'No, nobody's gonna know that. If they're younger, they're not gonna…'" He continued: "So he decided to do, and I think it might have been Ace who said, 'You always wanted to be a rock and roll star, instead of a pudgy Jewish kid. Why don't you put stars over your eyes?' So he did. So he did two stars over his eyes, but they didn't align. It's difficult to do that freehand. So he decided just to use one. And that's where his makeup came from. Just one star over the eye, and that was it. And between that first application of the makeup to about three weeks later, I called up a local — I was acting like a manager, I always do — called up a local club, the Coventry, and convinced them to book us sight unseen or anything else for 35 bucks. 35 bucks!" Gene Simmons said. Since Kiss came to an end in 2023 after 50 years on the road, Gene Simmons reactivated his solo career. He has been touring around the world playing his solo material, Kiss tracks and some covers. https://youtu.be/mt2n5Zc4q1IThe post Gene Simmons recalls how Kiss created their makeup appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

How Toto had the idea for their name

How Toto had the idea for their name

Formed in Los Angeles, California in 1977 by highly respected session musicians, Toto became one of the most successful Rock and Roll bands of all time. The only constant members of the band throughout the years were the guitarist Steve Lukather and the keyboardist/singer David Paich. But over the decades many incredible musicians were part of the band, some of them were the drummer Jeff Porcaro, the keyboardist Steve Porcaro and the vocalist/keyboardist Bobby Kimball. But how did the band come up with that name? Well if you are a movie fan, you probably can guess the origin. But the story is not that simple. How Toto had the idea for their name In an interview for the documentary "John Parr – Acoustic Fever" (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage), the band's former vocalist recalled how they came up with the name Toto. "They were sitting at the house Jeff (Porcaro) had, watching television, they were watching 'The Wizard of Oz'. The little dog was named Toto and they thought 'that's a good name for a band'. That's where the name came from," Bobby Kimball said. Almost the same story was told by their former keyboardist Steve Pocaro, but it wasn't actually that simple. He said that in an interview with Produce Like a Pro (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage). "At that time, it's really a simple story. There's a bunch of different (stories). You're gonna hear the truth today. I remember very distinctively Jeff (Porcaro) saying, there were these bands like INXS, (which) was happening right then, U2, we just wanted something simple. With as few letters as possible, something like Toto, but of course, it would never, ever be Toto." "That was the dog in the Wizard of Oz, a movie we all loved. But we just wanted something simple like that. Which was the kind of the style at that exact time in the late 70s. But it was never going to be Toto, ever. But of course, that's what we would write on the cassettes. Anyway, the next thing you know, I'm looking at an album cover and it says Toto on it. It just kind of stuck," Steve Porcaro said. Curiously, a few years ago, Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams toured under the name Toto for a while and the tour was called "Dogz of Oz". Toto has sold an estimated amount of more than 40 million records worldwide. Some of their biggest hits are "Africa", "Rosanna" and "Hold the Line". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmOLtTGvsbM&pp=ygUHcm9zYW5uYQ%3D%3DThe post How Toto had the idea for their name appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

What was Eddie Van Halen’s opinion on Peter Gabriel

What was Eddie Van Halen’s opinion on Peter Gabriel

The guitarist Eddie Van Halen formed with his brother Alex back in 1972 the legendary Hard Rock band baptized with their surname. They eventually recruited the vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony, completing their classic line-up which would record the band's most successful albums. Over the decades Eddie proved he was one of the most influential guitar players of all time but curiously he had a really broad musical taste.  During his career, he gave his opinion on many other artists, including the former Genesis vocalist Peter Gabriel. What was Eddie Van Halen’s opinion on Peter Gabriel Eddie actually loved Peter Gabriel and his favorite album was "So", released in 1986 by the former Genesis singer. He even said a few times that it was actually the last album that he bought in his life, because after that he wasn't really listening to new bands. In an interview with Forbes back in 2009, he praised the artist, saying: “I love Peter Gabriel, not everything he does, I don’t even like everything I do. Sometimes I’ll write something, for instance a song called “Top Of The World,” everyone else liked it, I didn’t. I got outvoted and I wrote the damn song, it ended up on the record. (But) I didn’t like the song, everyone else did. I got outvoted. It’s personal preference, that’s all music is,” Eddie Van Halen said. “So” was Peter Gabriel’s fifth solo studio album It's his best-selling record and sold an estimated amount of more than 6 million copies worldwide. Some of the most famous tracks are: “Sledgehammer”, “Red Rain”, “Don’t Give Up” and “In Your Eyes”. Eddie mentioned the album in an interview with Guitar Tricks Insider in 2016, as one of his favorites of all time. "Red Rain" was especially one of his favorite songs of all time. He even presented that track to his song Wolfgang Van Halen when he was  still a kid. Wolf recalled in a conversation with Classic Rock in 2022, the first time that his father showed him that Peter Gabriel song. He continued: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkLTwX0duY4&pp=ygUIcmVkIHJhaW4%3D “I’ll never forget him coming up to me one night with these huge headphones and going, ‘Wolf, put these one.’ He put the headphones on my head and cranked the first song ‘Red Rain’.” “The soundscape of it is incredible. Everybody should do that at least once in their life. Put an amazing pair of headphones on and crank Red Rain. It’s very hard to listen to now that my father is gone. But that album front to back is Peter Gabriel at his finest,” Wolfgang Van Halen said. Eddie Van Halen sadly passed away in 2020 at the age of 65, after years battling cancer. When his son Wolfgang got married in 2023, he chose the Peter Gabriel song "In Your Eyes" to be played during the ceremony because it was one of his father's favorite ones. That album was nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1987. However, the winner that year was Paul Simon’s "Graceland". Rolling Stone magazine included the album in their 2003 and 2020 editions of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The big hit “Sledgehammer”, was promoted with an innovative animated music video. It was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and subsequently won a record of nine MTV Video Music Awards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMOFjoX_9yUThe post What was Eddie Van Halen’s opinion on Peter Gabriel appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

UPS driver has a blunt take on US economy after delivering this year's Christmas packages

UPS driver has a blunt take on US economy after delivering this year's Christmas packages

Certain professions have an inside look at the economy because they’re on the ground floor and see things change firsthand. For example, the advertising business knows that a recession is coming six months ahead of time, and realtors often get a good idea of how the economy is changing before the shock hits everyone else. Delivery drivers are another group of people who can get a good idea of how the average person is doing. They have more packages to deliver when the economy is doing well and fewer when things take a turn for the worse. That’s why a TikTok by UPS driver Donate McCauley (@dontaymccauley) has so many views. After delivering Christmas packages, he thinks things are going well for most people at the end of 2024. “I thought everybody was broke. I thought we were trending towards a recession, and y’all been complaining all year about finances, and y'all say that until Christmas,” the UPS driver said in a video with over 100,000 views. @dontaymccauley credit card debt going crazy. #ups #peakseason #Texas #foryoupage “I see y'all actually do got money. And y'all making us pay, for every house got, like, 3, 4 packages. I'm loaded up,” McCauley continued. “Every day I'm going out with 400 packages on this truck, and y'all killing us, man, give us a break. But I thought you ain't have no money, though?” Is the U.S. economy good or bad in 2024? The post received many comments; some said they are having difficulty getting by this year, while others say they are doing pretty well these days. It’s another example of the lukewarm way that people have viewed the U.S. economy since the COVID-19 pandemic subsided. “Broke as in it costing me a whole helluva lot more to live than it should. I will always have money for Christmas one way or another,” Lisa Marie wrote. “We’re using After Pay. I did LOL,” Juanita added. “I have been saying this ALL YEAR. Every restaurant, every tourist attraction, special event, and retail store is PACKED most of the time in my small ‘poor’ city,” SteelersGirl wrote. “I said this to my husband a few weeks ago. Everywhere I go, people are buying stuff. Car dealership was packed last week, too. The economy seems ok,” Wiat What wrote. Another delivery driver chimed in, and she felt the same way as McCauley. “USPS here. I have been saying this for the last year,” ChicagoGirl wrote. Are Americans spending more this holiday season? The confused delivery driver who says that people are saying one thing but spending in another tracks a pre-election poll. A survey taken in September found that 62% of respondents said the economy was weak, while 38% said it was strong. Regardless of how individuals feel about the economy, the numbers don’t lie. This was a strong holiday season for retailers. Visa says that spending is up this holiday season 4.8% over 2023. "This holiday shopping season, we’re seeing increasing consumer confidence as people sought out in-store experiences – and went online – to purchase gifts and celebrate the holidays with friends and family,” Wayne Best, chief economist at Visa, said in a statement. “This spending growth demonstrates the adaptability of both consumers and retailers and the overall strength of the economy.”

Pentatonix nailing the national anthem in perfect 5-part harmony is a must-watch

Pentatonix nailing the national anthem in perfect 5-part harmony is a must-watch

"The Star-Spangled Banner," better known as the American national anthem, is one of the most notoriously difficult songs to sing, and there's no shortage of not-stellar performances to prove it. One of the reasons it's so difficult is that it requires a wide vocal range, with high notes meant to be sung loudly as the song climaxes. Another reason is that it's almost always sung live in front of a large audience, usually at sporting events where the crowd is particularly amped up, which adds pressure to deliver a perfect performance. A handful of anthem performances have gained legendary status (hello, Whitney Houston), and now an acapella version from Pentatonix is giving those iconic moments a run for their money. At the NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans on Christmas Day, the quintet of singers started with one solo voice, then added layer after layer of pitch-perfect harmonies. The effect is stunningly powerful. Absolutely the best kind of chills.Watch: People were completely bowled over by it, with comments like:"I want this on the radio/spotify etc. asap! I’ve never heard a rendition of The Star Spangled Banner other than Whitney Houston, that I wanted to listen to over and over!!! Incredible!""The last 'wave!!!' Y'all this was fire. Favorite version ever.""Best anthem ever! We rewinded bc it was too good to only hear once! ?""Pretty sure this is the best version of our national anthem that I have ever heard!!!""I'm Brazilian but I couldn't hold some tears after that ? AMAZING!!!""Crushed it! One of the all time best. Needs to be Super Bowl anthem every year!!! ????❤️"Lots of people are vying for Pentatonix to sing the anthem at the Super Bowl in February, which is when most of the best-loved anthem performances have taken place. (Grammy award-winning singer Jon Batiste is already lined up to sing the anthem at the 2025 Super Bowl.) And in case you hadn't noticed, Kirstin Maldonado, the lone female in the group, is pregnant with her second child, which means she belted out those high notes with a growing baby pushing on her diaphragm. Talk about next level skills. Pentatonix actually started as a trio, with Kirstin Maldonado, Scott Hoying, and Mitch Grassi forming a singing group together in high school in Arlington, Texas. They added beatboxer Matt Olusola and bass singer Avi Kaplan to round out their sound, forming Pentatonix in 2011 and winning the show The Sing-Off that same year. After some internal drama, Kaplan left the group in 2017 and Matt Sallee came on in his place. The group has its own What is it that makes their sound so satisfying? Part of it is that they are individually talented singers, from pitch to power. Putting five talented people into an acapella group isn't a guarantee of success, but their voices blend beautifully and they perform like a well-oiled machine. Having a skilled beatboxer gives the group a percussive element and a low bass makes for a rich sound. Mitch Grassi being a countertenor—a male singer who can sing in a full female vocal range in addition to a male range—adds a surprising element as sometimes it's hard to discern whether he or Kirstin are singing the high notes. Our brains love musical harmony, but what makes certain combinations of tones pleasing or displeasing to our ears has long been a mystery. While we might assume that harmony is a universal thing, but it's not. Some research has shown that what we find harmonious is culturally relative and learned. As a 2019 study states, "Even though it is one of the most important components in music, and possibly the most widely studied, the definition of harmony differs vastly across time, genre, and individuals, reflecting how little is understood about it." Our experiences with music may be different, but we know when we hear a harmony that hits just right. Music has a profound effect on our emotional states, which is why music therapy has gained traction as a field of study in recent decades. We may not have a study showing that the feelings evoked by the national anthem are heightened by perfect 5-part harmony, but that certainly seems to be the experience of countless people who watched Pentatonix totally nail it.
