This week, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced the reformation of the Motorcyclist Advisory Council (MAC). This comes a little over a month after board members received letters terminating their place on the MAC. While the designated membership categories for the Council remain the same as prescribed in federal law, the DOT has required that all 13 seats be refilled with new nominations. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is proud to announce that it will once again support MRF Vice President Jay Jackson for the seat reserved for a national motorcyclist foundation. Jay has been a tireless advocate for riders nationwide, as proven by his selection to serve on the MAC last year. The MRF is disappointed that the DOT chose to reshuffle the Council and remove already seated members. Stability and continuity are vital to ensuring the MAC can effectively advise the DOT on issues impacting riders. While this decision is frustrating, the MRF is determined to fight for Jay’s reappointment and ensure the motorcyclist community continues to be represented by strong, experienced leadership. The nomination process is moving more quickly than in past years, with an accelerated deadline of October 20th. The MRF will be working closely with our state partners and allies to secure the necessary letters of support to reinforce Jay’s candidacy. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota has indicted eight individuals for their alleged role in defrauding the state’s Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) program. In a press briefing, Acting U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson said most of the $100 million HSS program was fraud. In August, the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) shut down HSS, a housing assistance program funded by Medicaid but operated by DHS. State leaders said HSS was shut down due to widespread fraud within the program. Today, Thompson confirmed HSS is “riddled with fraud” as he announced eight individuals have been indicted for allegedly defrauding the program. When you are hiking on a mountain with your dog, the last thing on your mind is what to do if your dog suffers an injury. We often play rescue scenarios in our minds. Unfortunately, they all involve our hero dog running three miles to the ranger station. Our faithful dog leads them to our location, and they helicopter us out. @keeks347 He’s okay!!!!!! ♬ On & On & On – Caamp It rarely works that way in real life, as social media user Keeks found out while hiking with her dog. The pair were out with a group of friends when Keeks’ dog hurt his paw. The group was able to bandage the injured paw, but the dog would have struggled to walk. They fashioned a backpack-style rescue sling out of shirts, allowing one of them to carry the dog on their back. The idea was genius. The mountainous terrain would have made it almost impossible for Keeks to get her dog to safety if she had been hiking alone. She could have fashioned a rescue skid and dragged it out, but carrying a dog weighing about 40 to 45 pounds is not an easy task. The make-shift rescue sling allowed her friend to carry her dog almost effortlessly on his back. Keeks’ dog seemed to enjoy the ride, looking around over the man’s shoulders at the passing scenery. The caption under the video assures followers that “He’s okay!!!!!!” Commenters pointed Keeks to rescue slings for future trips. Upon reviewing many of the available slings, most proved adequate for ten-pound dogs. The larger slings did not look comfortable for the animal or the carrier. Instead of these, Keeks might want to check out some of the wrap-around slings for carrying toddlers. We’re glad her dog is okay. Please share.
