SEC Determines Apple Must Allow Free Speech Resolution Proposed by Shareholders To Proceed

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. This week‚ the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) refuted Apple’s plea to veto a “free speech resolution” proposed by shareholders that were concerned about Apple‚ as a dominant Big Tech giant‚ to suppress speech. This proposal‚ advanced by the American Family Association (AFA)‚ pushes Apple to scrutinize its processes of content curation and to publish a report addressing fears that the corporation’s policies may inadvertently inhibit speech based on differing views. Related: Apple shareholders reject motion to publicly declare freedom of expression as a human right  The SEC dismissed Apple’s attempt to omit the resolution from the discussion during its 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders‚ effectively setting the stage for a vote on the resolution in spring. Apple is known for its strict terms of use policy for all apps on the App Store. As Apple’s own App Store is the only way to get apps on its platform‚ this means that Apple’s is the judge‚ jury‚ and executioner when it comes to what the public is allowed to say and see. In November of 2023‚ concerned about potential Apple censorship‚ the ADF sent a letter to the SEC insisting that Apple should not be allowed to block the resolution‚ as it is seen as an area of potential misuse. Following the SEC’s decision‚ Jeremy Tedesco‚ ADF Senior Counsel and Senior Vice President for Corporate Engagement‚ voiced his approval‚ referring to the development as a “much-needed step toward transparency.” He urged Apple to regain the trust of its shareholders and customers by clearly stating its stance on not using its power to discriminate against user’s speech and beliefs – irrespective of their political or even religious persuasion. Pennsylvania Supreme Court Is Urged To Find Keyword Search Warrant Unconstitutional

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Law enforcement agencies are always seeking innovative but questionable methods to solve crimes. One such method is the keyword search warrant. Unlike conventional warrants‚ these warrants do not target a person or a place but are based on specific search terms used by individuals on search engines‚ social media‚ and other online platforms. In other words‚ agencies are finding information on everyone who searched for a specific search term. When law enforcement agencies suspect a crime‚ they can request a keyword search warrant from a court. This warrant compels tech companies to hand over data on who searched for specific terms. For example‚ if the police are investigating a burglary‚ they might ask a search engine for data on who looked up “how to pick a lock” in a certain location. The Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures. Critics argue that keyword search warrants are inherently overbroad and indiscriminate‚ potentially infringing on this fundamental right. These warrants often capture data on individuals who have no connection to the crime under investigation. In a recent legal filing to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court‚ the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)‚ along with several other advocacy groups‚ has vehemently opposed the use of keyword search warrants. We obtained a copy of the filing for you here. The EFF‚ alongside the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (PACDL)‚ has challenged the issuance of such a warrant to Google in this particular case. They assert that this practice could lead to a widespread invasion of privacy for all Google users and potentially extend to any search engine user. Andrew Crocker‚ EFF’s Surveillance Litigation Director‚ has strongly criticized these warrants‚ emphasizing their incompatibility with constitutional rights. “Keyword search warrants are totally incompatible with constitutional protections for privacy and freedom of speech and expression‚” Crocker stated. He highlighted the dangers of these warrants implicating innocent individuals who might have innocuously searched for terms that law enforcement links to criminal activity. Another dimension of concern is the intimate nature of the data that search engines like Google accumulate. People often turn to search engines for inquiries they would hesitate to share with others‚ resulting in a digital repository of their most personal thoughts and queries. Law enforcement’s demand for identities based on specific keyword searches threatens to expose this sensitive data. Vatican removes priest who ran off to Italy with 'groomed' 18-year-old teen

A disgraced priest from Alabama who dashed off to Italy and subsequently married a teenage girl just months after she graduated high school has officially been removed from the priesthood‚ according to the New York Post. The office of Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi released a statement about the situation on Facebook‚ writing: "The Archdiocese of Mobile has received notice that the laicization of Alex Crow is complete‚ effective immediately."Crow‚ 30‚ had apparently asked to be removed from the priesthood. And the request was "confirmed in a letter by our Holy Father‚ Pope Francis."The report noted that laicization — the process of removing a clergy member from the ability to conduct duties within the church — can be carried out after a leader has been absent for more than six months‚ according to the statement. The statement went on to say that "[b]efore the six-month period was over‚ Crow initiated the process for his own laicization‚ a move the Archbishop supported." Crow no longer holds any privileges or responsibilities within the Catholic Church.Crow's involvement with a high school teenager was snuffed out after it was discovered he had sent her love letters on Valentine's Day when she was still a student. Crow had lectured as a guest at the teen's school‚ per the report.Other reports suggested Crow could have been grooming the teen before they eventually left for Italy in 2023. Crow had apparently been involved in a rock band and was fascinated with demonology‚ and he told those around him that he had planned to go to Italy to perform exorcisms.Crow and the teen spent four months abroad before eventually returning to Alabama‚ where they got married. Though there was an investigation into possible wrongdoing by Crow‚ nothing ultimately came of it.“I pray that this decision is one more way in which we can all move toward peace after these unsettling events. I continue to pray for God’s grace to bring healing for all‚” the statement concluded. The Catholic Church has consistently found itself in the spotlight‚ most notably for members of its clergy being involved in child sex abuse crimes. More than 500‚000 members officially left the German Catholic Church in 2022‚ representing a massive exodus from the longstanding religious institution.Thomas Schuller‚ an expert in Catholic canonic law‚ shared with German media at the time that the church is "dying an agonizing death" right before the eyes of the public.Like Blaze News? Tennessee man allegedly killed his wife with a hammer on New Year's Day‚ buried her in another county

A man in Nashville allegedly murdered his wife with a hammer in their home on New Year's Day. Then the man buried her body on a piece of their property in another county‚ according to Fox News Digital.Seventy-year-old Joseph Glynn was taken into custody on Saturday after the authorities discovered the body of his 76-year-old wife‚ Jackie Glynn‚ buried six feet under ground on a piece of their property in Dekalb County. There was a Silver Alert issued just a day earlier for Jackie. — (@) Joseph apparently admitted to the police that he had fatally struck his wife with a hammer at their home on New Year's Day. The following day‚ he drove her body to Dekalb County and buried her there. Later‚ Joseph told his wife's children that she had left because she was terminally ill‚ according to WZTV. The children had started to ask questions when Jackie's medical provider said the claims were not true. However‚ there were other inconsistencies in Joseph's statement to the children that made them wonder. After the authorities issued the Silver Alert for Jackie‚ they eventually discovered her vehicle around the couple's property in Dekalb County. The police later found a freshly covered hole on the property. — (@) Jackie was later found in the hole‚ which was six feet wide and ten feet deep‚ according to reports. Her body was stuffed inside a plastic vehicle cargo box‚ which was concealed beneath a pile of roofing shingles.Joseph apparently had the hole dug on December 16 by a contractor‚ claiming that he was going to use the hole for burning rubbish. Though the hole was dug two weeks before the alleged incident occurred‚ it is uncertain if Joseph had planned the attack that far ahead of time. The weapon used in the attack has not been uncovered. The police have suggested Joseph got rid of the weapon at the Keltonburg Community Center‚ but it was not revealed how they discovered this information. The 70-year-old was soon booked into the Davidson County Jail on charges of criminal homicide‚ abuse of a corpse‚ and tampering with evidence. He is currently being held on $1‚030‚000 bond. The investigation is still ongoing. It has not been revealed what the motive may have been in the case.Like Blaze News? Bronx man arrested after sexually assaulting three women: Report

A man who apparently attempted to sexually assault three women in separate attacks in Manhattan on December 31 was taken into custody‚ according to the New York Daily News.On Thursday morning‚ the authorities arrested Christopher Marrero‚ 23‚ for the alleged attacks that took place on New Year's Eve. He is now facing charges of sexual abuse‚ attempted sexual abuse‚ and attempted rape‚ per the report. As a result‚ Marrero was held on $50‚000 cash bail or $75‚000 bond at his arraignment on Friday. The first attack took place mid-morning when Marrero targeted a 21-year-old woman who was riding on the train. He apparently stared at her for an extended amount of time before following her as she transferred trains and eventually left Union Square subway station. As the woman was walking‚ Marrero apparently snatched her by the arm and tried to drag her into a blocked off alleyway‚ according to the police. The incident took place in broad daylight‚ according to a second report. However‚ the woman managed to break away from Marrero and ran off. Marrero targeted a second victim less than two hours later‚ around noon. This time‚ a 24-year-old woman stepped into a bathroom at a business when Marrero quickly forced his way into the restroom right behind her. He pushed her face up against the door as he tried to rip her pants off.The woman was somehow able to escape the situation‚ and Marrero ran off. It does not appear anyone attempted to stop Marrero after the incident.Marrero assaulted a third woman just two hours after that‚ around 2:00 p.m. The third victim — a 24-year-old woman — was inside an apartment building on E. 18th St. First Ave in Stuyvesant Town‚ a large residential apartment complex near Union Square. He‚ again‚ grabbed the woman by her waist from behind and apparently forced her against a wall before pushing his groin up against her buttocks‚ according to the criminal complaint. The woman screamed‚ which led to a passerby approaching Marrero and the victim. Marrero reportedly ran off before the passerby engaged. The NY Daily News reported that none of the victims were physically harmed in the incidents. This was apparently not Marrero's first crime. He was previously arrested three times over a two-week span back in July for assault and criminal mischief charges‚ according to the authorities. Jail records indicated that he now faces charges brought in the Bronx‚ according to the report. It is not clear what punishment Marrero could face if he's found guilty of the charges.Like Blaze News?
