Elon Musk’s AI Company Secures Permit In Red State To Build Plant That Will Power Data Centers

Elon Musk’s xAI has secured a permit with Mississippi state regulators to build a power plant in the town of Southaven to power its nearby data centers. “The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) held a board meeting earlier in the day to vote on whether to issue the permit,” CNBC reports. The plant will have “41 natural gas-burning turbines,” the outlet noted. Elon Musk's xAI wins permit to build power plant in Mississippi despite pollution concerns https://t.co/TeYT2U78lE — CNBC (@CNBC) March 10, 2026 CNBC shared further: The NAACP and other civil rights and environmental advocates tried to get the meeting delayed, arguing that it would conflict with some residents’ efforts to vote in the state’s primary elections, being held on the same day. “We are outraged that, despite the community’s clear demand to move the Election Day hearing, MDEQ chose to bulldoze through a decision that silenced the very residents most harmed by it,” said Abre’ Conner, director of environmental and climate justice at NAACP, in a statement from his organization and the Southern Environmental Law Center. The MDEQ didn’t immediately respond to a request for information about the hearing. Now owned by SpaceX after a merger was announced in February, xAI has been using more than a dozen temporary turbines for months at the facility in Southaven, claiming that no federal permit has been required. The company has two data centers — Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 — in Memphis, Tennessee, just across the Mississippi state line. Critics accused xAI of “polluting the area and harming neighborhoods.” More below: Mississippi residents are fighting Elon Musk and his polluting AI company. xAI is burning dozens of turbines in Southaven, polluting the area and harming neighborhoods. But residents are packing hearings, organizing, and pushing back. pic.twitter.com/zTgbJ2UuCK — More Perfect Union (@MorePerfectUS) February 23, 2026 In January, Gov. Tate Reeves announced a $20 billion+ investment by xAI. Something special is happening in Mississippi! Record-breaking $20 billion+ investment by @xai. Hundreds of direct high-tech jobs. Thousands of subcontracting jobs. THIS is Mississippi’s time! pic.twitter.com/tzfgDUXswP — Governor Tate Reeves (@tatereeves) January 11, 2026 Previously, xAI bought a dormant power plant in Southaven and used temporary turbines to power data centers. Elon Musk's xAI bought a long-dormant power plant in north Mississippi and installed 27 temporary turbines to power AI data centers. Neighbors complain it sounds like jet engines running day and night. https://t.co/kYEcvJSLms — NBC News (@NBCNews) February 26, 2026 NBC News has more: Eddie Gossett awoke one morning last summer to what sounded like an airport runway suddenly opening on his rural Mississippi road. The jet engine roar has been almost nonstop ever since, much to the frustration and insomnia of Gossett and his neighbors. It isn’t a plane — or anything supernatural — though. It’s Elon Musk. Just down the road from Gossett’s house, 18 methane gas turbines had arrived on trailers on behalf of the richest person in the world. Without warning, the temporary turbines began running day and night, locals say, to power Musk’s AI ambitions. “I intended to die right here,” said Gossett, 76, who wonders how long he will have to put up with the noise and the air pollution. “Hell, I couldn’t give my house away with all this noise.” Musk’s xAI bought the long-dormant power plant in Southaven last year and plans to spend more than $20 billion in the area, some of it on a new data center in the city. It was the largest private investment in state history, according to Mississippi’s governor. Nine more temporary turbines arrived in December, bringing the total to 27. The company has since applied for a permit to put in 41 permanent turbines at the 114-acre site to generate electricity for AI data centers. Tech giants like Microsoft, OpenAI and Google are making billions in AI investments across the country to build up the computing and electric power the technology demands. That requires vast land and resources and, for communities like Southaven, a tradeoff between the promise of new jobs and tax revenue vs. environmental and energy costs.

About 140 U.S. Service Members Injured In Operation Epic Fury, Pentagon Says

The Pentagon said on Tuesday that approximately 140 U.S. service members have been injured in Operation Epic Fury. Eight service members are listed as severely injured. According to Axios, Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said they are “receiving the highest level of medical care.” JUST IN: Roughly 140 U.S. service members have been injured in the 10-day Iran war so far, the Pentagon confirmed today. https://t.co/dXcW9eZYY1 — Axios (@axios) March 10, 2026 Axios has more: He added that most of the injuries have been minor, and 108 of those wounded have returned to duty. The announcement comes as the Trump administration continues to send mixed messages about the status and trajectory of the war. Trump has said the offensive was set to last around four weeks but was moving ahead of schedule. He told reporters Monday: “We could call it a tremendous success right now … or we could go further. And we’re going to go further.” A reporter asked White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to comment on the Pentagon’s statement about the injured service members. U.S. Central Command Announces “Seventh Service Member K*lled” In Operation Epic Fury The Independent shared further: Iran launched new attacks against Israel and Gulf Arab countries, while Israel carried out waves of airstrikes on Iran and Lebanon, where it is battling Hezbollah militants. Residents of Tehran said they had experienced some of the heaviest strikes of the war, leading to electricity cuts in many neighborhoods of the capital. One resident said his area shook for a half hour from strikes overnight and into Tuesday. A 27-year-old mother of a toddler said she witnessed a residential building get hit. She and others reached by The Associated Press spoke on condition of anonymity to prevent reprisals. Tens of thousands of Iranians have sought shelter in the countryside. The United Arab Emirates reported two more deaths as nine drones struck the country, while nearly three dozen other drones and missiles were intercepted. Firefighters battled a blaze in the industrial city of Ruwais — home to petrochemical plants — after an Iranian drone strike, officials said. No injuries were reported there. Iranian attacks on the wealthy Gulf country — home to the business and travel hub of Dubai — have killed six people and wounded 122 others since the U.S. and Israel launched a surprise bombardment of Iran on Feb. 28.
