A Third Human Bird Flu Case Is Confirmed In US, With A New Set Of Symptoms

A third case of bird flu has been confirmed in a dairy farm worker in the USA, the second identified in the state of Michigan. In contrast to the previous two cases, the infected individual has reportedly been experiencing traditional flu-like symptoms, though officials say they are now recovering. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed on May 30 that another human case of bird flu has been identified. As with the previous two US cases, the infected person was a farm worker in the dairy industry, and it’s thought likely they contracted the virus after exposure to an infected cow.The CDC stressed there is no evidence the three reported cases are linked in any way. They say the risk to the general public “remains low” but that people should take care when coming into contact with animals, especially if they are dead or appear sick. “People should also avoid unprotected exposures to animal poop, bedding (litter), unpasteurized (“raw”) milk, or materials that have been touched by, or close to, birds or other animals with suspected or confirmed A(H5N1) virus,” the agency adds. The dairy farm H5N1 outbreak has now hit nine states, according to data from the US Department of Agriculture. There had been 22 separate reports of infected cattle in Michigan at the time of writing. The two human cases of infection in the state occurred on different farms. The two other farm workers who contracted the virus experienced mild symptoms of an eye infection. This time, the individual presented with respiratory symptoms that are more usual with the flu, including a cough, as well as eye discomfort. After being treated with the antiviral Tamiflu, the patient is said to be “isolating at home, and their symptoms are resolving.” No other staff at the farm, and none of the patient’s family or friends, are showing symptoms.“With the first case in Michigan, eye symptoms occurred after a direct splash of infected milk to the eye. With this case, respiratory symptoms occurred after direct exposure to an infected cow,” said Michigan Department of Health and Human Services chief medical executive, Dr Natasha Bagdasarian, in a statement. “Neither individual was wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE). This tells us that direct exposure to infected livestock poses a risk to humans, and that PPE is an important tool in preventing spread among individuals who work on dairy and poultry farms.”“We have not seen signs of sustained human-to-human transmission, and the current health risk to the general public remains low.”Right now, the CDC is reporting no unusual patterns in human flu cases. Viral isolates from the latest patient are currently undergoing genetic testing – so far, it’s been confirmed that the virus is an H5 subtype, but more tests are needed before we have the second piece of the puzzle, the N (neuraminidase, an influenza virus surface protein). Given the patient’s history and exposure to H5N1-infected cattle, it’s suspected the virus will turn out to be H5N1 as well.As this highly pathogenic H5N1 strain continues to spread in many species – birds and mammals – across the US and further afield, there are understandable fears that it will make the jump to sustained spread in the human population. We’re not there yet, but close surveillance of the virus will continue to ensure that health authorities can take any necessary precautions in a timely manner – which could include mRNA vaccines, according to recent reports.

CNN's Kasie Hunt: Politico's Right — Dems Really ARE Freaking Out Over Biden!

CNN's Kasie Hunt: Politico's Right — Dems Really ARE Freaking Out Over Biden!

Imagine you're a Biden campaign staffer. You figure left-leaning Politico is surely in your corner. And then on Monday, you fire up the interwebs and find this headline: "Dems in full-blown ‘freakout’ over Biden." Yikes! And then on Wednesday, CNN This Morning host Kasie Hunt — whom no one would accuse of being a Republican shill — pileed on: "I have to say, I feel that from sources, that they are freaking out about the state of the campaign." In another blow to Biden, CNN reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere and New York Times reporter Zolan Kanno-Youngs mad very similar points: that the Biden campaign has repeatedly claimed that a certain event would be the "turning point" in which the contrast between Biden and Trump becomes clear in Biden's favor -- but that turning point never comes.  Dovere ended on a final, ominous, note for Team Biden: perhaps the contrast with Trump has become clear -- "and voters don't care."     Hide-the-sharp-objects time at Biden HQ? Here's the relevant transcript. CNN This Morning 05/29/24 6:38 a.m. EDT EDWARD-ISAAC DOVERE: What matters in the trial right now is what the jury is about to do. And we'll see what that is, what that verdict is, and then how it's received by the American public. But -- KASIE HUNT: [Skeptical tone of voice]: Yeah, but do you think the verdict is gonna change anything? DOVERE: Well, we'll see. Look, I think that one of the problems that you hear from a lot of concerned Democrats right now is that there have been many moments so far where we have been told, either the reporters told privately by campaign officials or they've sort of said it publicly, that this is the turning point for the campaign. This is when the dynamics are about to shift. This is when people are going to focus in and plug in. And that's going to benefit Joe Biden. And so far, every time has come and gone. HUNT: Right. DOVERE: And this may be a different moment, but if so, it will be the change from all these other moments that we've had so far that were supposed to be. HUNT: Well, and Politico put out, let's put the Politico headline up on the screen. This from from yesterday about Democrats freaking out, basically. There it is: "Dems in full-blown 'freakout' over Biden." Now this is, in some ways, a perennial situation with Democrats. Elliot, you used to work for them. You understand the -- [LAUGHTER] -- as well as -- Isaac, I mean, this is, we joke about it here. But this is how they put it. They say quote, "You don't want to be that guy who's on the record saying we're doomed or the campaign's bad, or Biden's making mistakes. Nobody wants to be that guy, said a Democratic operative in close touch with the White House and granted anonymity to speak freely. But Biden's stubbornly poor polling and the stakes of the election are creating the freakout, he said. This isn't oh my God, Mitt Romney might become president. It's oh my God, the democracy might end." And I mean, I have to say that, I feel that from sources, that they are freaking out about the state of the campaign. Is this just another cycle of that, or -- DOVERE: I mean, Democrats in full-blown freakout over -- fill in the blank every day of the week, every week of the year, always. But, yes, the stakes of this election are high and we have this weird confluence of people feeling like they don't want to talk about the eleciton, are tuned out from, and that we will be living in a different country if Joe Biden is president or if Donald Trump is president. (....) 6:40 a.m. Eastern ZOLAN KANNO-YOUNGS: You were saying that this might be a moment that the Biden campaign sees sort of a shift. I feel like we've been hearing over the past year, time and time again. This is gonna be the moment -- DOVERE: Totally. KANNO-YOUNGS: -- when the contrast is clear. This is going to be the moment when the contrast as clear. That's kind of part of the big concern among Democrats here. HUNT: Yeah. KANNO-YOUNGS: You have one candidate in a trial, another candidate focused on governing, and so far that contrast still hasn't become clear, at least when it comes to polling for voters. DOVERE: Or it's become clear, and voters don't care. HUNT: Right, yes. Also possible.

Kick the tyrants and traitors to the curb

When a president and vice president take the oath of office in America, they make a brief promise to the citizens of this country. For the president: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God. The oath taken by the vice president is similar but has this notable addition: I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic ... It seems that the only indispensable “promise” made by the two people at the top of this country’s governing body is that they assure protection of citizens, by ways outlined in the Constitution, from “enemies, foreign and domestic.” It has been undeniably clear since day one of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris' installation in the White House that they have insisted on leaving our southern border wide open. Unvetted "newcomers" (their own cutesy, welcoming nomenclature) have poured in through the Southern states, then in many cases conveniently flown across the country at taxpayers’ expense and plopped down who knows where. This act has been nothing less than an invasion. Where is America's protection from potential foreign enemies? At this critical moment in our nation’s history, we can no longer allow tyrants to rule our precious halls of government. During the 2020 election, when mobs of angry people burned down businesses and took over police stations and government buildings, violent rioters were given barely a gentle slap on the wrist and released to continue their mayhem on another day. Where was America’s protection from these domestic enemies? Donald Trump, for his part, offered the National Guard to protect citizens in cities and states subjected to this form of domestic terrorism. Some mayors and governors declined Trump's offer, however, leaving people, businesses, and public facilities defenseless. Of course, some might point to January 6, 2021, and say, "There! That was how our government was protecting us from the insurrection of unhappy, disgruntled, violent Trump supporters. Domestic enemies, one and all!" But with each new release of video from that fateful day, more evidence shows that the narrative spoon-fed to us by the media and deep-state operatives was a fabrication and twisting of the facts. And in the instance of January 6, Trump was still in charge and had reached out well ahead of the day's events to protect the Capitol from unrest. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) declined the president's offer, helping to set in motion what appears to be her own desired outcome of that day. Since Biden's administration has assumed the highest seat of power, the tyrannical witch hunt against January 6 demonstrators, who were truly mostly peaceful, continues. People who did not even enter the building when some of the Capitol doors were opened or gates removed by the police but instead remained outside on the lawn — even those unfortunate patriots are still being rounded up and put in jail. All they wanted that day was to “stop the steal.” What are they getting for exercising their First Amendment right? Incarceration. It is as if the Biden administration is telling citizens, “Hey, not only did we not steal the 2020 election, but we will also put you in jail just for saying that we did.” Or, more brazenly: “Yes, we did steal the 2020 election, and we are going to arrest you for noticing. And there is nothing you can do about it.” This is all part of the that fabulous "fundamental transformation" of America that Barack Obama promised on the campaign trail in 2008. Yes, President Trump spoiled his plans for four years starting with the 2016 election, but the manipulation of the results of the presidential election of 2020 got the plan solidly back on track. Presently, it is almost as if Obama himself is behind the scenes this very day pulling the strings on decisions being executed from the White House. Even though that observation is a tempting one to believe, there may likely be a scenario with more depth, one pointing to a deep-state faction being controlled by globalists. And can there be a more insidious enemy of the foreign variety than those "benevolent" one-world government people? A relative of mine told me right after 9/11 that a one-world government would be the best way to achieve peace in the world. I immediately gave just the slightest pushback: "Sounds good," I said, "as long as the person in charge of the world is George W. Bush." My relative was horrified. "No!" was all he could utter. And I said, "I think you get my point." Today, just replace "George Bush" with "Donald Trump" as the supreme commander of a one-world government, and you will hear more than just a short, simple "no." Be prepared for a torrent of screamed expletives. Globalists are perhaps the top foreign enemy of this sovereign nation. And anyone in bed with them is, quite simply, a traitor to America. So, if you have taken an oath to “defend and protect the Constitution” from such enemies and fail to carry out what is clearly your duty — well, to put it mildly, you are not fit for the office to which you made your solemn pledge. Since the Constitution begins with the words “We the People,” it is up to all of us to do our part to preserve the freedoms enshrined in that founding document. At this critical moment in our nation’s history, we can no longer allow tyrants to rule our precious halls of government. These traitors have been wreaking havoc long enough. It's high time for them to be firmly kicked to the curb. Editor’s note: A version of this article appeared originally at American Thinker.

Feed your neighbors with  sourdough pita and dipping oil

This week for Align, I interviewed prepper and children’s book author James Walton. Interestingly, when asked what he thought the most important thing is that someone could do right now to better prepare themselves for disaster, he said: “Engage with the people in your neighborhood. The loneliness epidemic and the hollow world of digital stimulation has created a real hunger for human interaction, because it has made it too easy to do life without looking anyone in the eye. Should a disaster strike, the people who live around you will be the ones you are surviving with. They will be the ones by your side, moving debris and tarping up roofs. Start a community garden, create a neighborhood text line or email group, and start talking about things like neighborhood watch. Life with people is so important. We need each other more than we realize.” This struck me. Inspired by his comments, I want to share this relatively easy, crowd-pleasing pita and dip. This is perfect for outdoor parties. You could even throw the oil in a mason jar and deliver it to new neighbors as a welcome gift. Sourdough novices needn’t be intimidated; this is one of the easiest recipes to start. If you’re running low on time and know a good local bakery, a crusty sourdough works just as well. As for the dipping oil, feel free to add chopped artichokes. It might even be nice to serve these alongside my Greek meatballs and cucumber salad, which many of you seemed to enjoy. Have a great weekend; may this dish grease the wheels of friendship! Sourdough ingredients1/2 cup sourdough starter, active and bubbly 1 cup water 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon sugar 2 tablespoons olive oil plus more for greasing bowl 1 teaspoon saltDipping Oil Ingredients3/4 cup olive oil 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 3 tbsp sun-dried tomatoes 2 tbsp minced garlic 1/2 cup chopped olives (I prefer kalamata) 2 tsp paprika 1 tsp chili flakes Lots of shaved parmesan Handful of chopped Italian parsley Salt and pepper to tasteSourdough instructionsCombine everything in the bowl of a stand mixer with the dough hook. Knead on medium/low speed for 10 minutes or until dough is stretchy and smooth. Oil a large bowl. Place the dough in the bowl, and add a lid or plastic wrap.Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 4-6 hours at room temperature or up to 12 in the refrigerator. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape into small balls on a lightly floured surface Let the dough rest for 15 minutes to relax gluten. Roll each ball of dough into a 6” circle with a rolling pin, no more than 1/4” thick. Allow them to rise a little until puffy (about 30 minutes to 1 hr). Cover with a damp tea towel during this final rise to avoid the dough drying out. While the pitas are doing their last rise, get a large pizza stone or cast iron skillet preheating in the oven at 500 degrees. You want to use a heavy vessel so that it can retain the heat. When the pitas hit the hot surface, they release steam in the oven and cook rapidly, creating the pocket that is so great for sandwiches or pita pockets! Place the pita bread dough onto the hot baking surface and place into a hot oven. Bake for 5 minutes or so. They should puff up really nicely.Dipping oil instructionsCombine all ingredients; as always, adjust quantities to taste. Serve on a platter with a tall lip and a large, flat spoon. Serve pita in a bread bowl.

Google says it fixed the AI Overviews everyone has been roasting for weeks

At I/O 2024 a few weeks ago, Google announced that AI Overviews will appear at the top of Google Search results in the US, telling users that it wants AI to do the googling for them. But AI Overviews turned out to be a huge misfire from the company that so many people trust for accurate internet search results. AI Overviews went viral on social media for displaying nonsensical, inaccurate, and sometimes dangerous answers at the top of Search. Google Search actually suggested putting glue on pizza to make the cheese stick. We showed you ways to avoid AI Overviews in search, and I realized that my decision to ditch Google Search a long time ago was a smart one. I will never have to deal with any of this nonsense. I also said that Google should retire the AI Overviews feature from Google Search. At the very least, the feature should be optional rather than the default. Unsurprisingly, Google has no plans to back away from AI. Instead, Google explained what happened since I/O, why AI Overviews offer inaccurate information, and what it's done to fix it. Google also blamed you, the user, for giving AI Overviews a bad name. Continue reading... The post Google says it fixed the AI Overviews everyone has been roasting for weeks appeared first on BGR.
