The next installment in the Jurassic World franchise is moving full steam ahead. We already knew that Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo are officially signed on to star in the upcoming feature directed by Rogue One and The Creator filmmaker Gareth Edwards. Today, we found out via The Hollywood Reporter that two-time Oscar-award winner Mahershala Ali is in talks to join the movie as well. Those talks better wrap up soon, because production on the film is set to start in London by mid-June, which is just a couple of weeks away. We don’t know the full title of the new film or much or anything about the plot, including what role Ali would be taking on. Given his credits (Moonlight, Green Book (pictured above), True Detective) it’s likely he would have a meaty role. This wouldn’t be his first foray into blockbuster franchises, however, as he voiced Uncle Aaron in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and is attached to a Marvel Cinematic Universe rendition of Blade, which has yet to go into production even though it’s been years since it was announced (though it has had a few rounds of directors and writers). The Border Patrol announced the arrests of 10 foreign nationals affiliated with an international prison gang over the Memorial Day weekend, highlighting the threat emanating from the U.S.-Mexico border. Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens announced the arrest of the 10 individuals affiliated with Tren de Aragua, an international criminal organization originating in Venezuela whose members have been behind numerous high-profile crimes across the country. The Border Patrol chief confirmed the gang members will be processed for deportation. “Over the weekend, USBP agents across Texas arrested 10 subjects affiliated with the Venezuelan gang, ‘Tren de Aragua,’” Owens posted Wednesday on X. “Keep your eye on this gang. Their criminal activities represent a serious threat to our communities! The gang has grown exponentially into the biggest criminal organization in Venezuela, boasting around 5,000 members with an international presence across Latin America and the U.S. The crime syndicate has been described as having “revolutionized” crime in Latin America and federal immigration authorities have warned that its members are attempting to get a stronger foothold in the U.S. Tren de Aragua members allegedly are behind several high-profile crimes, such as the illegal immigrant accused last year of kidnapping and strangling to death a Florida man. Diego Ibarra, brother of the illegal alien accused of killing Georgia nursing student Lakin Riley, is another suspected Tren de Aragua gang member. He was arrested after allegedly trying to hand an official a fake green card and carries a litany of other charges against him. Senate and House Republicans earlier this year urged the Biden administration to formally designate Tren de Aragua as a transnational criminal organization, arguing that doing so would better manage the threat the group poses. “Tren de Aragua is an invading criminal army from a prison in Venezuela that has spread their brutality and chaos to U.S. cities and small towns,” the GOP lawmakers wrote in March. “If left unchecked, they will unleash an unprecedented reign of terror, mirroring the devastation … already inflicted in communities throughout Central and South America. Democrats and their allies in the liberal media launched a smear campaign against Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito earlier this month in an effort to prompt his recusal from upcoming cases related to former President Donald Trump and the Jan. 6 protests. Jodi Kantor, running lead on the initiative for the New York Times, failed to land a decisive blow with her May 16 flag story, which the Washington Post had years earlier wrote off as a nothing-burger. Meatless, but desperate for results, Kantor found another flag to concern-monger about: the "Appeal to Heaven" flag, also known as the Pine Tree Flag, which had apparently been flown above Alito's beach house in New Jersey last year. This line of attack proved similarly ineffective. Alito told Democrat Senators Dick Durbin of Illinois and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island that he personally flew neither flag and that he would not be recusing himself, prompting Democrats to rage impotently. Democratic lawmakers' feelings and the New York Times' remaining credibility were not the only casualties in the unsuccessful smear campaign. The offending "Appeal to Heaven" flag has effectively been transmogrified in the popular liberal imagination from a patriotic banner — designed by an aide-de-camp to then-General George Washington and flown by proud Americans ever since — to a loathsome symbol of an imagined wrong. It has 'since been adopted by a different group — one that doesn't represent the city's values.' The "Appeal to Heaven" flag was one among a collection of 18 flags reflecting different moments in American history flown in Civic Center Plaza outside San Francisco City Hall. According to the SFist, despite being flown for 60 years with "zero controversy," the flag has been removed by the city's Recreation and Park Department. The flag's fate appears to have been sealed not only by its presence among the myriad of different banners present at the Capitol on Jan. 6 but on account of is recent association in the Times with a Supreme Court justice detested by the left. City parks officials told the San Francisco Chronicle in a statement that whereas the flag originally signified the "quest for American independence," it has "since been adopted by a different group — one that doesn't represent the city's values." The "Appeal to Heaven" flag has been replaced by an American flag, which also appeared at Justice Alito's home and at the Capitol on Jan. 6. The flag's removal comes just days after users on social media indicated Democrats were effectively whipping stones at Alito from a glass house and months after a Palestinian flag was sent up a pole at the Golden Gate Bridge. According to the U.S. National Park Service, the "Appeal to Heaven" flag "became familiar on the seas as the ensign of the cruisers commissioned by General Washington and was noted by many English newspapers of the time." Republican Illinois state Rep. Chris Miller's office noted years before the flag became controversial: The pine tree had long been a New England symbol being depicted on the Flag of New England flown by colonial merchant ships dating back to 1686. Leading up to the Revolutionary War it became a symbol of Colonial ire and resistance. The colonists resented the restrictions on the timber used for their needs and livelihoods. Prohibitions were disregarded and they practiced 'Swamp Law,' where the pines were harvested according to their needs regardless of statutes. In New Hampshire enforcement led to the Pine Tree Riot in 1772, one of the first acts of forceful protest against British policies. It occurred almost two years prior to the more well-known Boston Tea Party protest and three years before open hostilities began at the Battles of Lexington and Concord. The pine tree was also used on the flag that the Colonists flew at the Battle of Bunker Hill in June 1775. The flag was subsequently adopted by the Massachusetts Navy and used until 1971. Concerning San Francisco's quiet removal, Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R) joked online, "'Quick, we can't let the unwashed masses see that the Appeal to Heaven flag isn't a call for violent insurrection!" Davy and Natalie Lloyd were American missionaries in Haiti. They were shot and killed by gangs in the war-torn country. While it’s undeniably a tragedy, some have used the horrific story to voice their disdain for mission work — specifically Christian mission work in countries that have traditionally rejected Christian values. Those critical of the work often accuse it of being a form of evil imperialism, colonialism, and white supremacy. “That needs to be put to an end,” Allie Beth Stuckey says, dismayed by the unkind response to the news of the couple's deaths. According to the Christian Post, three missionaries including the American couple and the Haitian director of the mission, Jude Montis, were ambushed and killed by a Haitian gang. Davy Lloyd was 23, and Natalie Lloyd was 21. The couple worked full-time with missions in Haiti for their Oklahoma-based group founded in 2000 by Davy Lloyd’s parents, before being attacked by three truckloads of armed men as they left church. The men reportedly stole trucks and other belongings from the mission. “I think that we can all see the bravery and the love of Christ that was exemplified by these young people and be moved more towards the heart of God and convicted of our complacency and our addiction to comfort,” Stuckey says. Despite the bravery displayed by the missionaries, that hasn’t stopped users of X, formerly known as Twitter, from criticizing them after their deaths. “Random question but what’s the point of Christian missionaries going to Haiti when the country is already 93% Christian?” one user, Karim Wafa-Al Hussaini, wrote in a now-viral tweet. One user responded, “white supremacy is the reason. next question?” Another said, “They think they’re the wrong kind of Christians.” Other users said it was for “human trafficking” or “the gram,” meaning Instagram. “These people of course don’t understand Christianity, and even if they do understand Christianity, they believe that it’s not something to be told, because of course they don’t believe that it’s good news,” Stuckey says. While there are people defending the Lloyds and saying they were there offering humanitarian aid and resources, there are many more alleging that they were simply performative white saviors. “Overwhelmingly, Christians have been the greatest force for good in all of history, the greatest force for humanitarianism in all of history. It doesn’t even come close,” Stuckey says. “From the inception of Christianity and the creation of hospitals, of orphanages, of organizations to feed and to clothe and to help the poor, to the creation of and the spreading of the idea of human right, to the work that we see throughout history and up until today.” “Christians, who are willing without any profit incentive to go into the most dangerous and the poorest communities and to bring life and hope and resources. Again, nothing else comes close,” she adds. A guilty verdict could help Trump by aiding the perception that he was unfairly targeted to help President Joe Biden win re-election.
