Ed Sec Misstates Reagan Quote‚ Accidentally Exposes His Dept. as Enemy of Freedom

Talk about irony. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona tried quoting former President Ronald Reagan at a conference earlier this month‚ but left out the most crucial portion of the conservative icon's words. Reagan‚ in fact‚ stood for exactly the opposite for which Cardona sought to cite him. While speaking at a...

Trudeau Supports Partnership With EU For Digital ID Push‚ Suggests it Will Help Curb Online “Disinformation”

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Canadian Prime Minister‚ Justin Trudeau‚ a proponent of centralized control‚ has finalized a controversial collaborative digital partnership with the European Union. This agreement exhibits full commitment to the introduction of a digital identity system in Canada and the government is pursuing it‚ in part‚ under the guise of fighting online “disinformation.” The Trudeau government’s announcement delineates the terms of the Canada-EU Digital Partnership‚ which aims not only to institute digital credentials for Canadians but also to bolster cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The contentious partnership insists on a joint effort from Canada and the EU to bolster their respective bilateral and multilateral cooperation in forums like the G7 and the G20. “The Digital Partnership will allow Canada and the EU to have a stronger common voice in multilateral fora‚ where appropriate‚ and bring jointly developed solutions to international partners and advance our joint strategic priorities‚” the announcement states. The G20‚ an influential conglomerate of the globe’s 19 major countries and the EU‚ has previously encouraged exploring the creation of “digital public infrastructure‚” including potential digital identification systems and perhaps even a centralized digital currency. This “digital public infrastructure” phrase is the same buzzword being used by the likes of The Gates Foundation and the UN‚ when it comes to pushing digital ID and payment systems. Alarmingly for many Canadians that support the protection of civil liberties‚ Trudeau has demonstrated a seemingly unwavering allegiance to this digital ID agenda. Mosasaurus‚ Pliosaurus‚ And Predator X: Which Ancient Marine Predator Was The Deadliest?

Mosasaurus‚ Pliosaurus‚ And Predator X: Which Ancient Marine Predator Was The Deadliest?

Ancient marine predators were some of the biggest animals the world’s ever seen‚ as well as the deadliest. While humans haven’t yet found evidence of an animal that was bigger than the extant blue whale‚ sea monsters of the Jurassic and Cretaceous ate prey significantly larger than krill‚ and we have the fossil teeth to prove it.Predator X was the name given to a mysterious marine reptile (not a dinosaur) excavated in Norway in 2009 that was estimated to have a bite force four times stronger than that of Tyrannosaurus rex‚ reports National Geographic. It wasn’t until 2012 that its identity was revealed as Pliosaurus funkei. What was Pliosaurus?Pliosaurus is a genus that breaks down into the Ancient Greek for “more” and “lizard”. It was named by English palaeontologist Richard Owen in 1841‚ and he was kind of onto something‚ as you really got a lot of bang for your buck with these giant-headed marine predators. The genus represents just one of several groups within the Pliosauridae family that lived during the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous periods. One such sea monster was Lorrainosaurus‚ excavated in France. As one of the oldest “megapredatory” pliosaurs dating back 170 million years‚ its discovery demonstrated when these marine predators evolved away from the smaller size of their plesiosaur relatives into the “sea murderers” after which their clade‚ Thalassophonea‚ was named.Pliosaurus funkei making humans look a bit ridiculous.Image credit: By ДиБгд - Own work‚ CC BY-SA 4.0 via Wikimedia“Lorrainosaurus was one of the first truly huge pliosaurs‚” said Sven Sachs‚ a researcher at the Natural History Museum in Bielefeld‚ reports Discover. “It gave rise to a dynasty of marine reptile mega-predators that ruled the oceans for around 80 million years.”Jurassic Park/World fans will no doubt be more familiar with a different marine predator: mosasaur. So how did these two hunters match up‚ and did they ever cross paths?Pliosaurus Vs MosasaurusUnfortunately‚ the world never got the Pliosaurus Vs Mosasaurus showdown we all would’ve loved to see (and likely never will unless we innovate the tech to bring back ancient animals). Mosasaurs emerged during the Late Cretaceous meaning they missed the pliosaur party by a few tens of million years. However‚ we can make some educated guesses as to how a fight might’ve gone down were they both plopped in the same pond.      In terms of length‚ Mosasaurus hoffmanni had Pliosaurus funkei beaten at 17 meters (56 feet) long‚ while our Predator X was a poxy 12 meters (40 feet). However‚ mosasaurs were typically slimmer with elongated skulls‚ while pliosaurs had big stocky heads. This gave them a bite force capable of chomping through giant prey like ichthyosaurs with their huge teeth‚ while mosasaurs tended to snatch and swallow their prey whole using pointy teeth. So‚ if we’re going off chomp factor‚ our money’s on the pliosaurs‚ but if we’re working from how many teeth? It’s a close one to call. And while we're pitting ancient beasties against one another‚ how about Megalodon Vs Mosasaurus?

World's First Transatlantic Flight Using 100%

World's First Transatlantic Flight Using 100% "Green Fuel" Takes To The Skies

For the first time in aviation history‚ a passenger jet powered only by alternative "green" fuels has left the tarmac. Currently making its way from London to New York‚ the Boeing 787 aircraft is carrying 60 tonnes of propellant made entirely from waste fats and agricultural by-products.Operated by Virgin Atlantic‚ the flight – which left London Heathrow at 11:30 am UTC this morning – has been organized to demonstrate the potential of so-called sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) as the industry looks to decarbonize. Scheduled to land at New York’s JFK airport at 2:40 pm ET‚ the jet is not carrying any commercial passengers or cargo‚ although Virgin Atlantic founder Sir Richard Branson‚ the airline's chief executive Shai Weiss‚ and Britain's transport minister Mark Harper are all on board.Seen as a stepping stone towards truly sustainable flying‚ SAFs do still release carbon into the atmosphere when combusted‚ although their “lifetime emissions” are thought to be around 70 percent lower than conventional jet fuels. Many airlines already use a blend of regular fuel and SAF‚ although the high cost of the latter means that it currently only accounts for about 0.1 percent of aviation propellant used worldwide.Supplied by Air BP and Virent‚ the SAF powering today’s Virgin Atlantic flight consists of 88 percent hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) and 12 percent synthetic aromatic kerosine (SAK)‚ which is derived from the waste products of corn production. Speaking before the flight took off‚ UK Transport Secretary Mark Harper said in a statement that “today’s historic flight‚ powered by 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel‚ shows how we can both decarbonize transport and enable passengers to keep flying when and where they want.”Virgin Atlantic CEO Shai Weiss added that the flight “proves that sustainable aviation fuel can be used as a safe‚ drop-in replacement for fossil-derived jet fuel and it’s the only viable solution for decarbonizing long-haul aviation.”The aviation industry currently accounts for 2-3 percent of global carbon emissions‚ and the quest to achieve net zero flights by 2050 is seen as a crucial target in the fight against climate change. As part of the strategy to reach that goal‚ the UK government plans to require all airlines to use at least 10 percent SAF by 2030‚ although many environmental activists are critical of this approach. For example‚ Magdalena Heuwieser from the advocacy group Stay Grounded told Reuters that today’s flight is merely a "greenwashing distraction.""[Fuel substitutes] are nowhere close to being scalable in the necessary timeframe to avoid climate collapse. What is urgently needed is to reduce the burning of fossil jet fuels‚ which means reducing flights wherever possible‚" she said.Echoing that statement‚ Dr Guy Gratton‚ associate professor of aviation and the environment at Cranfield University‚ told BBC News that "we can't produce a majority of our fuel requirements this way because we just don't have the feedstocks. And even if you do‚ these fuels are not true 'net zeros'."To truly decarbonize the aviation industry‚ it will be necessary to move beyond SAF and develop carbon-neutral alternatives such as e-fuels‚ which are made from captured carbon emissions and hydrogen. While these fuels do emit carbon when burned‚ the amount released is equal to the amount removed from the atmosphere during the manufacturing process‚ meaning their overall impact is zero.Today’s historic flight comes at a crucial time‚ with world leaders set to meet on Thursday for the beginning of the COP28 climate summit in Dubai. As ever‚ aviation is likely to be a major talking point at the event‚ which seeks to secure pledges from governments around the world to reduce their emissions.

MS Stem Cell Therapy Shows Promising Results In Early-Stage Clinical Trial

MS Stem Cell Therapy Shows Promising Results In Early-Stage Clinical Trial

An early-stage clinical trial of an injectable stem cell therapy for multiple sclerosis (MS) has shown that the treatment is not only safe‚ but may also show promise in stopping the disease from progressing. The trial recruited 15 patients with secondary MS – the progressive phase of the disease – aged from 38 to 57 years old‚ all of whom showed high levels of disability as a result of their condition at the start of the trial. The patients then had neural stem cells injected directly into their brains‚ and over the next 12 months‚ were carefully observed for any side effects‚ change in symptoms‚ and disease progression. They also had to take drugs to suppress their immune systems for half of the follow-up period. The following year revealed that the treatment was safe and well-tolerated; there were no deaths or serious adverse events and when side effects did occur‚ they were either temporary or reversible. The main result‚ however‚ was that none of the patients showed an increase in disability or a worsening of symptoms.Whether this was solely down to the neural stem cells needs to be confirmed by further trials‚ but the researchers believe their other observations suggest that the treatment may well impact disease progression. For example‚ some patients were assessed for a reduction in brain volume that’s well-associated with disease progression; the researchers found that the larger the dose of stem cells‚ the smaller this reduction was over time. The team also monitored changes in the brain’s metabolism – aka how it produces energy – over the 12 months‚ as previous research had found that altering metabolism could reprogram the immune cells that attack the central nervous system in MS. They found signs that the stem cell therapy had affected metabolism and thus may have had an anti-inflammatory effect; the higher the dose of stem cells‚ the greater the levels of fatty acids‚ which are key molecules in metabolism. “I am cautiously very excited about our findings‚ which are a step towards developing a cell therapy for treating MS‚” said Stefano Pluchino‚ who co-led the study‚ in a statement. The author also explained‚ however‚ that there is reason to be mindful when making conclusions about the results.“We recognise that our study has limitations – it was only a small study and there may have been confounding effects from the immunosuppressant drugs‚ for example – but the fact that our treatment was safe and that its effects lasted over the 12 months of the trial means that we can proceed to the next stage of clinical trials.”It’s estimated that over 2 million people worldwide live with MS‚ of which two-thirds will move into the secondary‚ progressive phase of the disease within 25 to 30 years after their diagnosis. Whilst the current study is small‚ it demonstrates promise in stem cell therapy-based approaches to treating this highly debilitating disease.“This was a very small‚ early-stage study and we need further clinical trials to find out if this treatment has a beneficial effect on the condition. But this is an encouraging step towards a new way of treating some people with MS‚” concluded Caitlin Astbury‚ research communications manager at the MS Society. The study is published in Cell Stem Cell.
