Music icon Brian Wilson, co-founder of the musical group The Beach Boys, has died at the age of 82. Wilson’s family made the announcement on Wednesday via social media. “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away,” said the Instagram statement shared alongside a photo of the musician smiling. “We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Other original members include Brian’s brothers, Dennis and Carl Wilson, his cousin Mike Love and his friend Al Jardine. Brian was 19 when the band was founded. The group became known for their California beach vibe with hits like “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “Surfin’ Safari,” “Surfer Girl,” and other beach-centric songs.  The Beach Boys moved beyond their original sound and cemented themselves as rock legends in 1966 with the “Pet Sounds” album and the single “Good Vibrations.” Both are now considered to be among the greatest and most influential works in the music world. Following the success of his career, Wilson faced some mental health struggles compounded by the death of his father and the past abuse he faced as a child. “I’ve been through a great deal of mental anguish,” Wilson told People in part during a 1983 interview. “I felt like a fat slob. It was very embarrassing. I used to go onstage and it was scary. Now I’m getting used to it. I feel a little more confidence in myself.” He also said he let go of “a lot of bad stuff” by going through therapy.   In the mid-90s, the musician staged a bit of a comeback. Wilson went on to release his 11th solo album in 2012.  “I feel good. I really do feel good these days,” the singer said at the time. “This whole year has been very emotional and — what do you call that word? — sentimental.” Wilson was married twice. He is survived by his seven children, including two with his first wife Marilyn Wilson and five with his second wife Melinda Ledbetter.  His daughters, Carnie and Wendy, are members of the band Wilson Phillips.

Macklemore, a rapper best known for the 2012 song “Thrift Shop,” was the victim of a home invasion at his Seattle residence over the weekend while his children and nanny were there.  According to the police report, two men allegedly entered the residence just after midnight on Saturday morning. A woman later identified as the family nanny was able to escape and call 911 after she was hit with a blast of bear spray.  “She escaped, but three children were still inside the house,” the report said, per People. “[The caller] also added that the house belonged to a high-profile individual.” The woman claims the intruders yelled at her, asking, “Where are the jewels, b*tch?” She then said she brought them to a bedroom and observed as the thieves “went through drawers, cabinets and raided the closet full of clothing, jewelry, and shoes.” Social media users are pointing out the hypocrisy of police being dispatched to his home during a crisis after the rapper released the song “Hind’s Hall” last year, which was critical of law enforcement and referred to police officers as “actors with badges.” The report also noted that the nanny believed the attack was “politically motivated for some reason.” The 41-year-old recording artist, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, shares three children with his wife. The family lives in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle.  Macklemore was in Ireland at the time of the alleged break-in, per TMZ. Macklemore’s anti-police single is also explicitly anti-Israel. “Block the barricade until Palestine is free/When I was seven, I learned a lesson from Cube and Eazy-E,” the lyrics say. “What was it again? Oh yeah, f** the police/Actors in badges protecting property/And a system that was designed by white supremacy.” The song was also critical of former President Joe Biden. “The blood is on your hands Biden, we can see it all,” the lyrics said. “And f*** no, I’m not voting for you in the fall.” In 2023, at an anti-Israel rally in Washington, D.C., Macklemore took the stage and told the crowd, “I don’t know enough, but I know enough that this is a genocide,” as The Daily Wire previously reported.  Macklemore made headlines in 2024 for encouraging a crowd at a Seattle concert to chant, “F*** America.”

Fake Gavin Newsom is leading the “resistance,” and he’s making dramatic speeches about it. Newsom, the real-life Ken doll governor of California, has presided over a great exodus from his state. I’m one of the people who left. I’m a lifelong Angeleno, lived in LA for virtually my entire life, but then I took myself, my family, my parents, and my company, and we all moved out of LA thanks to the governance of people like Gavin Newsom. But now, Gavin Newsom believes that he has his road to 2028 paved for him. He is using President Trump’s unleashing of federal forces to protect ICE agents in doing their job as an excuse to claim that he is now standing up to authoritarianism in the United States of America. Thus, on Tuesday night, Newsom delivered another one of his very overwrought, ridiculous speeches. I think he thought it was the end of the film “Independence Day” and he was Bill Pullman shouting, “We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive!” It didn’t go well. It started with massive audio issues right at the top. You could see he was talking, but nothing came out, which was an improvement because when he talks and sound does come out, it’s usually stupid. He finally got to his point, which was: We must resist! We must resist federal encroachments! What are Newsom’s “federal encroachments”? ICE agents were sent to Los Angeles to execute federal immigration raids, to pick up illegal immigrants, and to deport them. That is what federal law says you are supposed to do. It is certainly within the purview of ICE to nab illegal immigrants and then process them for deportation. That is all well within the remit of the federal government. Instead, he activated the National Guard and sent them there in a support role for ICE; he also activated some Marines in a support role for the National Guard. But according to Gavin Newsom, all of this amounts to an extra-constitutional coup, the beginning of a monarchic America in which Donald Trump is unleashing federal forces in order to take full control of the American body politic. Newsom almost teared up as he spoke, but one thing is clear: this guy is not Laurence Olivier. He’s not a good actor. And so the moment came off as incredibly vague. He wept: This moment we all need to stand up and be held to account, a higher level of accountability. If you exercise your First Amendment rights, please, please do it peacefully. I know many of you are feeling deep anxiety, stress, and fear, but I want you to know that you are the antidote to that fear and that anxiety. What Donald Trump wants most is your fealty, your silence to be complicit in this moment. On Tuesday, a judge did rule against Newsom — who had attempted to stop via an injunctive relief lawsuit what President Trump is trying to do in Los Angeles — saying Trump had the legal capacity to act as he has and Newsom could not block him. But what Gavin Newsom wants most of all is to run for president in 2028, and the media are helping him out. The Washington Post had an entire piece titled “Newsom in interview: Trump’s actions echo authoritarian regimes.” The Post quoted Newsom saying, “That’s an American president in 2025, threatening a political opponent who happens to be a sitting governor. That’s not with precedent in modern times. That’s what we see around the globe in authoritarian regimes.” That’s because President Trump joked about arresting Newsom, because Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, had said that if Newsom violates federal law, then he will be subject to federal law just as any other citizen would be. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander: if you’re violating the law, then the law should apply to you. But there is no ongoing effort to jail Gavin Newsom, despite the fact that he is, in fact, a horrible governor. He has every right to be a horrible governor; he just can’t violate federal law. The Post continued: Newsom’s comments reflected a broader frustration for Democratic leaders, who have been unable to counter what they see as an escalation of Trump’s antidemocratic actions in his emboldened second term. Newsom has tried all methods: He was a face of the resistance in the first term and a welcoming greeter during Trump’s initial visit to California in his second term. All the while, he continued suing Trump, while keeping up a cordial back-channel relationship. On Monday, he sounded like he was at his end with Trump, calling him “unrestrained” and “unhinged.” Newsom said on Monday, “Trump is a very different president than his first foray in office. You’ve seen that as it relates to how he has completely obliterated any oversight from Congress; how he seeks to obliterate oversight from the judicial branch by threatening impeachment of judges and running up to the edge as it relates to court orders.” This is all about Gavin Newsom running for president in 2028. He is hoping that if he becomes the face of resistance to Trump, it will propel him to victory in the Democratic primaries. What’s disturbing is what’s behind the face.

The University of Michigan said on Tuesday that it is “actively reviewing all relevant policies” after two Chinese nationals working with the school were arrested for smuggling potentially dangerous “biological materials” into the United States. The university, which boasts of being one of the top public research schools in the world, has come under the microscope as two Chinese researchers doing PhD and post-doctoral work at U-M were charged by the Department of Justice this month after they were caught allegedly smuggling hazardous materials that could wipe out crops. “Recently, several individuals have been accused of trying to transport materials across international borders in violation of federal laws and U-M policies, and of making false statements to law enforcement. The university takes these situations extremely seriously,” said Arthur Lupia, U-M’s interim Vice President for Research and Innovation. “That is why the university is: Fully cooperating with federal investigations about these matters; Actively reviewing all relevant policies; Reexamining internal protocols to determine how to improve training and provide additional guidance; and Ensuring that failure to comply with all laws, regulations, and policies will have consequences, up to termination.” Earlier this week, a PhD student from Wuhan, China, was arrested at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport for attempting to smuggle “biological materials” into a U-M laboratory. Chengxuan Han told authorities that she had previously sent packages to the United States with biological material related to roundworms, a parasitic worm that can “pose major problems in corn, soybean, peanut and other crops,” according to the DOJ. The arrest of Han marked the second time this month that a Chinese citizen with connections to the University of Michigan has been charged with smuggling potential biological threats into the country. Michigan scholar Yunqing Jian, along with her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, were also charged by the federal government with attempting to smuggle a fungal plant into the country that could potentially cause “head blight,” a disease that can wipe out wheat, barley, corn, and rice crops. U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. called the arrests “part of an alarming pattern that threatens our security.” “The American taxpayer should not be underwriting a PRC-based smuggling operation at one of our crucial public institutions,” Gorgon added. Last year, U-M said it spent $1.17 billion in “federally sponsored research expenditures,” adding that “Federal funding now accounts for 57% of the university’s total research volume.” Some of that funding has been affected by President Trump ripping up numerous federal grants to universities across the country. FBI Director Kash Patel addressed the arrest of Jian and Liu last week, saying it “is a sobering reminder that the CCP is working around the clock to deploy operatives and researchers to infiltrate American institutions and target our food supply, which would have grave consequences… putting American lives and our economy at serious risk.” The Trump administration has moved to “aggressively” revoke the visas of Chinese students studying at American universities. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last month that the administration would start by focusing on revoking the visas of students with close ties to the Chinese Communist Party and those studying in “critical fields.” Trump announced on Wednesday, however, that his administration is close to finalizing a trade deal with China that includes allowing Chinese nationals to use “our colleges and universities.” In January, U-M ended its partnership with a Chinese university over national security concerns after five Chinese students were charged with attempting to mislead investigators about a suspicious late-night trip they took to a Michigan military base in 2023.

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) immediately regretted his decision to demand an example from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth of a medical research project that he believed the Defense Department was justified in terminating. Hegseth appeared on Wednesday before the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Durbin used some of his time in an attempt to attack Hegseth by claiming that, under his leadership, the Defense Department was cutting funding to vital medical research efforts. That’s what we worked very hard to find in ways that other secretaries have not. This committee and others talk about waste, fraud, and abuse all the time. We have actually gone after waste, fraud, and abuse. Because every dollar that was spent is another dollar we can pour into the war-fighters.” Durbin tried one last time, saying that cutting two-thirds of the spending — would not “Make America Great Again” for the families of service members: “I don’t think so.” He did not address Hegseth’s point regarding the fact that much of the spending had been found to be “waste, fraud, and abuse” — and instead, he changed the subject to complain about the military parade scheduled for Flag Day.
