“This Is About Lovin’ Older Ladies” – A Look Back At “Oneida,” The Unreleased Song Tyler Childers Fans Are Raving About

“This is about… lovin’ older ladies…” Tyler Childers made a number of headlines this morning, first by performing “Long Violent History” for the first time ever at the Hollywood Bowl last night, but then in the wee hours of the morning, dropped a cryptic new teaser what is safe to assume will be his next album, or at least, a new single. Featuring our old friend Casey, who has starred in a number of Tyler Childers music videos, there seems to be a handful of potential Easter Eggs in the video, including “Nose On The Grindstone” playing in the background and some kind of weird looking chicken at the end (that’s not a Jersey Giant for everybody freaking out about it). To be honest, it doesn’t look like any kind of real bird so maybe it’s a reference to “Snipe Hunt”? Snipes are real birds though so not entirely sure I understand the origins of that joke… But the big one is that the girl waiting to get her hair done is named “Oneida,” and that has fans convinced Tyler might finally be recording it. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tyler Childers (@timmytychilders) So… let’s dive into this unreleased fan favorite: “Oneida” Quite a few years back, fall of 2016 to be exact, Tyler Childers made a return visit to Red Barn Radio where he brought out a song that had been “collecting dust” in his catalog, as he put it, since back in 2013 when he wrote it. Called “Oneida,” it’s a top-notch story of a younger man entranced by an older woman. And in pure Tyler Childers fashion, the writing is superb. Just take a look at the first two verses: “Back before birthdays were something she dreads Back before children had settled her friends Back when the radio spoke to her heart Oh, girls they wanna have fun I lay here awake and I laugh at her jokes She is referencing movies I’m too young to know And I’m letting her lead as we dance in the dark Oh girl, I’m falling in love” At that 2016 Red Barn Radio session, Tyler confessed that he had only played it a handful of times, and even to this day, it’s at the bottom of the list. According to Setlist.com, he’s only performed it about a dozen times over the course of his career, and many of them have been in the past few years. His first full band performance of the song came just a few years ago in 2022. Tyler Childers is unquestionably the type of artist who has an innumerable amount of awesome, uncut songs in his back pocket, many of which, will never ever see the light of day. But given the fact that he’s working on a new album with Rick Rubin, a man who is famous for pushing artists out of their comfort zone, wouldn’t he be the perfect producer to capture the magic of some of these old songs? Might be… RCA Chairman and CEO Peter Edge, said it should be coming out in the next few months, and it defies expectations: “I’m really excited about Tyler Childers’ new album, which is produced by Rick Rubin. He defies expectations, and this new album goes even further. The great thing about Tyler is that he does it the way he wants to do it. He’s playing giant venues, and he’s making the music he wants to make.” To be fair, I don’t think Tyler will be recording a full album of these long lost gems, and I’m not even 100% convinced that he recorded “Oneida.” It just seems so unlike him, but then again, working with Rick Rubin also seems so unlike him, so it’s anybody’s guess. Generally, when it comes to musical releases like this, it’s not the most obvious answer that is correct, and in this case, a studio recording of “Oneida” seems like the obvious answer to this teaser. I suppose we’ll just have to wait until tomorrow morning to see… For my money though, out of all of these unreleased songs that we’ve come to know and love over the years, “Oneida” is one of his best. Reba Gets Emotional Talking About How Dolly Parton Offered Her Whole Band To Keep The Tour Going Following Tragic Plane Crash In 1991

Dolly Parton is as real and good as they come. On March 16th, 1991 seven of Reba’s band members, as well as her tour manager, were tragically killed in a plane crash flying from a show near San Diego, California. They had performed for a group of IBM executives, and had planned to go straight from there to Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her tour manager Jim Hammon, keyboardist and bandleader Kirk Cappello, fellow keyboardist Joey Cigainero, drummer Tony Saputo, guitarists Michael Thomas and Chris Austin, bassist Terry Jackson and backup singer Paula Kaye Evans, as well as the two pilots, Donald Holmes and Christopher Hollinger, were all killed that day. Reba almost ended up on the plane, as well, but had decided last minute to stay the night in San Diego because she was still dealing with a bout of bronchitis. Her then-husband, Narvel Blackstock, and stylist, Sandy Spika, stayed the night with her. The rest of her crew left in two separate planes from a private airport, but the first of the two that took off crashed just 10 minutes from the airport. The tragic incident led her to write an album, For My Broken Heart, dedicated to her beloved band and crew members, which she added in the liner notes was: “A form of healing for all our broken hearts.” In her 1994 autobiography Reba: My Story, she says that she was jolted awake at 2AM by her hotel phone ringing. At first, she thought an excited fan had gotten the number to her room, or that someone possibly had the wrong number. But it was Roger Woolsey on the other line, Reba’s pilot, who wanted Narvel to come up to his room immediately. Roger quickly got dressed to go up there, and he couldn’t even answer any of Reba’s questions about what was going on as he hurried up to get more details. She recounted some of the details from that night in her book: “I sat upright in bed. I wouldn’t lie down again until the next night at my home in Tennessee. Later, Narvel would describe Roger as being white as a sheet when he walked into his room. ‘I watched everybody get on both planes,’ Roger said to Narvel. ‘Both planes taxied to the end of the runway and I got in my car to come back to the hotel.’” Ultimately, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that Holmes, the main pilot, had called an FAA service specialist to find out how long he needed to wait to take off. He was told he could take off immediately if he used if he used “visual flight rules,” which means he was required to know the area and terrain. He called back two more times before they took off, but mainly because he wanted to confirm he wouldn’t cross into the complex map of controlled air space in the region. According to Biography.com, he was told it was fine to direct the plane northeast and remain below 3,000 feet. A few minutes after takeoff, around 1:45AM, they were flying at 3,300 feet when the left wing clipped an outcropping of 3,500-foot Otay Mountain, sending it into the rocky peak with a massive explosion. It was an awful tragedy that still deeply affects Reba to this day, and shortly after the crash, Reba would go on to win ACM Female Vocalist of the Year in 1991, and she dedicated that win to her band: It was an extremely traumatic situation, obviously, and though Reba went onto have a legendary career, it was her friend Mrs. Dolly Parton who showed up big-time during Reba’s time of need and sadness. In a recent interview with Variety, Reba recalled some of the times she has gotten to work with Dolly in the past, notably on the duet the reimagining of the duet “Does He Love You” in 2022, and Dolly even appeared on Reba’s hit self-titled sitcom many years ago, though it was how Dolly stepped up in the early 90’s that still makes Reba emotional. She explained that Dolly called her right after the crash to offer comfort, and also offered to let Reba use her band and do anything else she needed to try to keep her career obligations going as best as she could during that awful time. Reba was visibly emotional talk abut how Dolly ultimately sent her band leader, Gary Smith, to help put a new band together. Along with Vince Gill, who also offered to play with her as well as letting her use his band, Reba says they were “right there for me the whole time”: “I also got to record ‘Does He Love You’ with Dolly Parton. She is a dream come true, getting to work with her. I mean, she beat you there. That was so aggravating to me. I was going to be there ready to go, shoot the first thing that we were gonna do, and then Dolly would come in. Well, for some reason, the trailer I was gonna use on set, the air conditioning broke down or something was wrong. And so I had to go by my office, get ready there, and then come to the set. Dolly was already there. I wanted to beat her there so bad to show her the hospitality, welcoming and everything, but she’s a sweetheart. She did the ‘Reba’ TV show with me, came on an episode. When I lost my band in ’91 to a plane crash, Dolly called me, she said, ‘What do you need? Do you want my band?’ She sent Gary Smith, her band leader, to put a band together for me. She and Vince Gill were right there for me the whole time.” Just impeccable person, and another example of Dolly’s pure heart and genuine kindness that makes her so special. You can tell how much that gesture still means to Reba to this day, and it’s inspiring to hear about how Dolly has always gone out of her way to help others: @varietymagazine Reba McEntire talks about collaborating with Dolly Parton. #PowerOfWomen ♬ original sound – Variety “Does He Love You” The post Reba Gets Emotional Talking About How Dolly Parton Offered Her Whole Band To Keep The Tour Going Following Tragic Plane Crash In 1991 first appeared on Whiskey Riff.

The singer Bob Dylan said is one of his favorites of all time

The impact of the music written by Bob Dylan is absolutely immeasurable. He is one of the most prolific songwriters of all time, known not only for the success of his own recordings but also for the countless incredible covers of his songs by other artists and bands. Over the decades, he has spoken about many of those covers and praised artists he admired. There is one singer in particular who he said is one of his favorites of all time, describing him as one of the most soulful and as having an angelic voice. The singer Bob Dylan said is one of his favorites of all time Bob Dylan was named the MusiCares Person of the Year in 2015. During the annual gala, presented by the public charity and affiliate of the Recording Academy, many incredible artists paid tribute to him playing songs of his career. One of them was the American singer Aaron Neville, whom Dylan described as one of the most soulful singers of all time and one of his favorites. In tribute to Dylan, Neville performed 'Shooting Star' during the ceremony. In an interview with Bill Flanagan, talking about the ceremony, Dylan said: “I could always hear him singing that song. He’s recorded other songs of mine, all great performances. But for some reason I kept thinking about ‘Shooting Star,’ something he’s never recorded but I knew that he could. I could always hear him singing it for some reason, even when I wrote it. I mean, what can you say? He’s the most soulful of singers, maybe in all of recorded history. If angels sing, they must sing in that voice. I just think his gift is so great. The man has no flaws, never has. He’s always been one of my favorite singers right from the beginning.” He continued: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YgUsBJO8F0 “Tell it Like it Is,” that could be my theme song. It’s strange, because he’s the kind of performer that can do your songs better than you, but you can’t do his better than him. Really, you can’t say enough about Aaron Neville. We won’t see his likes again," Bob Dylan said. The Folk legend also said on another occasion that Aaron is one of "the world's greatest singers. A figure of real good power, built like a tank but has the most angelical singing voice". Aaron Neville is just a few months older than Bob Dylan and began his career in 1960. His first hit single, "Tell It Like It Is" (1966), which was mentioned by Dylan, brought him national recognition. Throughout his career, he covered several songs by the folk rock songwriter, including "I Shall Be Released." In 1989, as part of the Neville Brothers, he covered "With God on Our Side," and in 2003, he sang "Saving Grace" on the Dylan tribute album Gotta Serve Somebody. He also praised Neville in his memoir "Chronicles", mentioning The Neville Brothers versions of “With God on Our Side” and “Ballad of Hollis Brown” as some of his favorites. “It always surprises me to hear a song of mine done by an artist like this (Aaron) who is on such a high level. Over the years, songs may get away from you, but a version like this always brings it closer again.” Aaron Neville is a big fan of Dylan After his performance at the MusiCares ceremony, Aaron Neville was interviewed by the Grammy Awards and asked about when he became a Dylan fan. (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage) "I got into Bob back in the 60s, I think the album was 'The Times They Are a-Changin' (1965). I've been into him ever since, he's just a cool dude, you know? I like his writing and his singing is cool. He picked the song (Shooting Star), I was picking another song and he said: 'This may be cool'. I love the song (but) I had never heard it. (But I read over the years that he liked my versions). Especially the one I did 'With God on Our Side'. (I had the chance to hang out with him in New Orleans) some years back before (hurricane) Katrina," Aaron Neville said. Besides the Bob Dylan songs, Aaron Neville also took part in a version of "End of the Line," a song co-written by Dylan with the supergroup Traveling Wilburys. This version was released on Dr. John's posthumous album "Things Happen That Way", featuring Aaron Neville. The singer recorded songs in many different genres throughout his career, including R&B, soul, gospel, jazz, country, and pop. As a solo artist, he was nominated for 14 Grammy Awards and won 5.The post The singer Bob Dylan said is one of his favorites of all time appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.
