Randy Travis Shares Heartwarming Video Of Charlie Daniels Praying With Him Backstage At A Show
They don’t make ’em like Charlie Daniels anymore.
The country music legend passed away back in 2020 after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke at his home in Tennessee. But he left his mark on this world in more ways than one.
Aside from pioneering the fusion of Southern rock and country music, and his then-groundbreaking (and still classic) song “The Devil Went Down To Georgia,” Daniels was a man of deep faith who served as a friend, mentor and inspiration to many in the music business and beyond.
Daniels was outspoken about his faith and his love for his country, and though he never endorsed a political candidate, he wasn’t afraid to speak out on political issues and earned him a reputation as right-wing figure, something that often drew criticism from those on the other side of the political aisle but earned him the respect of his peers for having the courage to stand up for what he thought was right.
Through it all though, the most important guiding principle for Daniels was his faith, and he wasn’t afraid to share it with others.
Randy Travis was one of Daniels’ good friends in country music. They were both inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016, but that wasn’t the only bond the two shared: Charlie once had a colt that was born on Randy’s birthday – so Charlie named it after Randy.
Of course Randy has been through plenty of struggles of his own. Back in 2013 he suffered a near-fatal stroke that took away most of his speech and ability to walk, though he continues to support country music despite not being able to perform. He released a song last year thanks to some assistance from AI, and he continues to tour with his original band – though James Dupre does all of the singing these days.
Still, Randy is a constant presence in Nashville and a source of inspiration as he continues to support both new artists and his old friends.
One of the all-time great moments in country music came back in 2016 when Randy took the microphone and sang “Amazing Grace” during his Hall of Fame induction ceremony, the first time he had sang publicly since his stroke that took his voice. And that same year, when Charlie Daniels performed at Nissan Stadium during CMA Fest here in Nashville, he even helped his friend join him on stage:
Randy also recently shared a heartwarming moment between the two that they shared backstage during that appearance.
In the video, Charlie and Randy can be heard talking about how bad Randy wants to get back on stage again. And then, Charlie asks Randy if he can pray for him – before taking his hand and bowing his head to ask for God’s blessings over his friend.

It was a private moment between friends that likely was never meant to become public, but it just goes to show what kind of guy – and what kind of friend – Charlie Daniels really was. Never afraid to share his faith, to say a prayer for his friends, or to help out those in need.
