Riots the worst 'since the French Revolution'

FOREIGN. The immigrant riots in France the other week cannot be compared to anything that has happened in the country since the French Revolution. This is what Pierre Brochand, former head of France's intelligence service DGSE, told Le Figaro.

According to Pierre Brochand, an "optimistic" estimate at hand puts 100,000–200,000 people in the nationwide riots.

- Official statistics indicate that nothing comparable has happened in French cities since the revolution of 1789, or at least since the weeks after the revolution, he tells Le Figaro.

The former spy chief describes the riots as "an uprising or a revolt against the French nation-state" carried out by "a significant proportion of the youth of non-European origin in the country's territory".

Pierre Brochand has previously expressed deep concern about the multicultural development in France. Last spring he predicted "a dark future, not to say a very dark future, for our children and grandchildren".

- We have no other choice, if we really want to regain control of our demographics, than to implement a 180 degree change of course. That is, we are sending a message, loud and clear, that France will no longer be a welcoming country for the foreseeable future, Brochand told Le Figaro at the time, but noted at the same time that it could already be too late.
