Heracleion: The ancient Egyptian city lost to the sea

Almost everyone has heard of Atlantis. The mythical tale of the fabled continent with its advanced civilization‚ lost beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Or of El Dorado‚ the legendary city of gold hidden deep within the South American jungles.  Lost cities have long captivated our collective imagination. Yet‚ there is one lost city that gets overlooked. A city that truly did exist but was consumed by the waters of the Mediterranean Sea.  Heracleion‚ also known as Thonis‚ was once a flourishing Egyptian port city‚ situated on the mouth of the Nile River. As sea levels rose and the Nile continued to deposit silt‚ the once great city became lost beneath the waves.  Its culture‚ wealth‚ and history were lost for centuries until it was rediscovered very recently. This is the story of the real-life lost city of Heracleion. Franck Goddio examines the stele of Thonis-Heracleion erected on site under water in the city of Thonis-Heracleion‚ Abukir Bay. ©Franck Goddio/Hilti Foundation‚ photo: Christoph Gerigk Historical Significance of Heracleion The ancient city of Heracleion was situated northeast of Alexandria at the mouth of the Nile River. During its peak‚ Heracleion was a bustling maritime city that played an important role in shaping Egyptian history and the broader cultural history of the ancient Mediterranean.  Its strategic location on the mouth of the Nile made it an international melting pot that helped spread the exchange of goods‚ ideas‚ and cultures.  Merchants and travelers from Greece‚ Phoenicia‚ and beyond docked their ships at this thriving metropolis and contributed to cultural exchange. Foreign influences also helped to impact the art‚ architecture‚ and religious practices in Egypt.  During the second century BC‚ the nearby city of Alexandria began to gradually take precedence over Heracleion as Egypt’s principal port. This contributed to its decline.  This diminishing importance of Heracleion was exacerbated when a major natural disaster significantly damaged the city. Researchers have tossed around the possibility that a tsunami‚ earthquake‚ or a combination of both‚ could have been responsible.  Around 101 BC‚ the very ground on which Heracleion rested experienced what is known as soil liquefaction. A phenomenon that turned the once-sturdy clay terrain into a watery swamp‚ swallowing the grand temples and accelerating the city’s demise.  However‚ despite its decline‚ the city wasn’t entirely deserted until it was completely consumed by the Mediterranean Sea sometime during the eighth century AD. Discovery and Rediscovery Ancient accounts of Heracleion date back to the writings of ancient historians such as Herodotus and Strabo‚ who marveled at its beauty and rich culture. Originally it was believed that Heracleion and the city of Thonis were one and the same.  But it was discovered later that “Thonis” was the Greek name for Heracleion. This revealed that the Greeks were trading with the Egyptians earlier than previously thought.  For centuries‚ the ancient city of Heracleion remained lost‚ a figment in the realm of myth and folklore. That is until 2001 when French archaeologist‚ Franck Goddio and his team‚ used historical texts‚ nuclear magnetic resonance magnetometers‚ bathymetry‚ and sonar to locate and map the submerged ruins.  Goddio and his team began mapping the area around the port of Alexandria in 1992. Four years later they broadened their search into the Aboukir Bay. That’s when their mapping equipment picked up strange anomalies on the ocean floor.  Franck Goddio and his team watch as a colossal statue representing the god Hapy‚ is pulled to the surface. ©Franck Goddio/Hilti Foundation‚ photo: Christoph Gerigk Upon closer inspection‚ it was revealed that the ancient city was covered with sediment deposited by the Nile River. This was because the city was built on the Nile delta where the river emptied into the sea.  This helped researchers understand why the city was lost for so long. It was buried beneath the ocean floor.  Underwater Archaeological Expeditions  After the city was rediscovered in the early 21st century‚ archaeologists attempted to survey and map the city. But its depth has made that objective very difficult. Some areas of Heracleion lie over 30 meters beneath the Mediterranean Sea.  To help in their search‚ archaeologists use advanced diving equipment‚ remotely operated vehicles (ROVs)‚ and sonar technology to navigate and excavate the submerged site. These expeditions have revealed a wealth of remarkably preserved artifacts‚ statues‚ and intricate temple complexes. The artifacts provide a glimpse into the daily life of ancient Egypt and its role in the ancient world‚ and the legacy it left behind. Remarkable Artifacts and Findings  The underwater excavations at Heracleion have yielded a treasure trove of artifacts that will keep researchers busy for years.  By studying them‚ researchers can build a better understanding of what life was like in the 8th century BC. The presence of Greek inscriptions and the evidence of trade connections have revealed that ancient Egypt was a more international influence than was previously known.  Some of the more notable discoveries found at the site include: Statue of Hapi: One of the most exciting discoveries that have been made is the colossal statue of a pharaoh believed to be a representation of Hapi‚ the god of the annual flooding of the Nile. The sheer size and detail of this statue underscores how important the Nile was in the lives of ancient Egyptians.  Intricate Temple Structures: The remnants of the Temple of Amun-Gereb‚ showcase the religious significance of Heracleion. These temples played a central role in ancient Egyptian spirituality and were centers of worship and rituals. Everyday Objects: Artifacts like pottery‚ jewelry‚ and glassware provide insights into the daily life of the city’s inhabitants.  Heracleion’s Influence on Modern Culture  The rediscovery of Heracleion has not only enriched the world’s historical understanding but has also ignited curiosity and creativity in contemporary culture. It has inspired various forms of artistic media including documentaries‚ books‚ and exhibits where people can learn more about this fascinating city.  Documentaries: Documentaries like “Heracleion: Sunken City of Egypt” and “Lost Worlds: The Sunken City of Heracleion” have delved into the city’s history and the underwater archaeological expeditions that led to its discovery.  Books: Works like “Heracleion: The City of Herakles” and “Egypt’s Lost City: The Watery Grave of Heracleion” explore the city’s history‚ significance‚ and the profound impact of its rediscovery.  Exhibitions: Museums and cultural institutions have showcased artifacts and findings from the underwater site. Exhibitions such as “Heracleion: The Legend Revealed” provide a deeper appreciation of its significance in ancient Egypt. Conclusion The sunken city of Heracleion offers a fascinating window into the past.  This ancient city has unveiled remarkable insights into the ancient Egyptian civilization‚ its cultural richness‚ and its prominence as a vital trading and religious center. The ongoing explorations of Heracleion continue to reveal secrets from its past and shed light on the life of ancient Egypt.  References  Discovering The Heracleion’s Lost City: Meeting Myth Beneath The Waves https://www.thearchaeologist.org/blog/finding-the-lost-city-of-heracleion-encountering-myth-under-the-waves Treasure Trove Discovered at Egypt’s Atlantis‚ Where Cleopatra Was Crowned https://www.thedailybeast.com/heracleion-treasure-trove-discovered-at-egypts-atlantis Heracleion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HeracleionThe post Heracleion: The ancient Egyptian city lost to the sea first appeared on History Defined.

Iconic Propaganda posters throughout history

Propaganda posters have long served as powerful tools for shaping public opinion and rallying support for various causes‚ particularly during times of conflict and political upheaval. These visually striking and emotionally charged artworks blend artistry with persuasive messaging‚ aiming to influence perceptions‚ inspire action‚ and convey ideologies. From the iconic wartime posters of the early 20th century to contemporary digital campaigns‚ propaganda posters offer a unique lens into the socio-political climate of their times. To reduce import dependency and promote local produce during WW2‚ Allied governments advocated for “Victory Gardens” on available land‚ including urban spaces like New York City. This British poster was one of many versions utilized in the campaign across the United States‚ Canada‚ Australia‚ and Germany. Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia: The man who cycled across the world for love

Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia is an artist best known for his epic love story. In 1977‚ he traveled over seven thousand miles from India to Sweden to reunite with his wife – and he covered most of that distance on a second-hand bicycle.  “Everything you are looking for‚ really is inside you. Your inner vision has a magnetic quality that draws everything you need closer to you. Remember your life and experiences are driven by the invisible wheels of love.” – P.K. Mahanandia Born Lucky Mahanandia was born in the Odia-speaking village of Kandhapada in 1949. He grew up in that small village between the river and the mountains in the area that inspired The Jungle Book. When he was born‚ the village astrologer told his parents that he would work with colors and art. What’s more‚ he would not have an arranged marriage. He was destined for a love match with a woman from a faraway land. She would be a landowner and a musician‚ born under the sign of the bull. This prophecy must have been astonishing to his family‚ who had all been born into extreme hardship. As Dalit people‚ they carried centuries of generational trauma. Untouchable The Mahanandia family belonged to India’s Dalit caste‚ commonly known as untouchables. The Sanskrit word dalita means ‘broken’ or ‘scattered’.  During the Maratha Empire‚ which ended in 1818‚ many Dalit peoples were driven from their lands. Many others were poisoned‚ their bodies buried beneath large buildings. Under the rule of Baji Rao at the end of the Maratha Empire‚ Dalit people were often beheaded or ritualistically sacrificed. They were forbidden from learning how to read or write. The preexisting caste system in India was intensified by British rule‚ which lasted from 1857 to 1947. The Criminal Tribes Act of 1871 branded certain communities as criminals by birth. Their movement was restricted‚ as was their interaction with members of other social groups.  To this day‚ marriage between members of different castes is rare. Discrimination in urban areas has declined‚ but segregation in rural areas is still common. Dalits in many places have limited access to schools‚ restaurants‚ temples‚ and even water sources. When Mahanandia was a child in rural India‚ practices around untouchables were still very much in effect.  He was permitted to attend the local school but forced to sit either at the very back of the classroom or outside. If his classmates accidentally brushed him in passing‚ they would hurry to wash themselves. Other boys threw stones at him if he walked too close to the village temple. Local priests told the villagers that families like his sullied everything that was pure and holy. In spite of these hardships‚ Mahanandia graduated high school and was accepted to art school. He had to drop out due to lack of funds but eventually matriculated to the College of Art in New Delhi. Delhi He had been promised a scholarship when he moved to Delhi but never received it‚ and so he ended up sleeping on the streets in order to stay there and continue his education. Mahanandia often painted on the street. This was not permitted‚ and local police would take him down to the station. Those nights were a welcome respite for the starving artist‚ who was given food to eat and a safe place to sleep. One day‚ he met the Russian astronaut Valentina Tereshkova and presented her with a quickly sketched portrait. She invited him to an event‚ where he painted ten portraits and was featured on television. He also painted the portrait of India’s only female prime minister‚ Indira Gandhi.  Overnight‚ he became famous in Delhi. He was granted permission to paint in the central square. In December 1975‚ Charlotte Von Schedvin traveled from Sweden to India. She drove there in a VW bus with three friends. When she saw Mahanandia painting‚ she was immediately drawn to him. She sat for her portrait four days in a row because Mahanandia‚ instantly smitten‚ felt that he didn’t do her justice the first time. Those beautiful blue eyes made him so nervous that his hand was shaking. On the second day‚ he asked her when she was born‚ whether she owned forested land‚ and whether she played music. When she answered each question in the affirmative‚ he knew that this was the woman that he was destined to marry. “We were destined to meet‚” he told her in broken English. “You will be my wife.” From India to Sweden Charlotte followed him back to his home village‚ where she met his family. She had always been drawn to the region‚ and says that she lived there in her past lives. The Muhanandia family gave her their blessing‚ and the couple was married according to tribal tradition. The couple had only three weeks together before Charlotte went home. Mahanandia promised that he would follow‚ but he had no money for a plane ticket. For eighteen months‚ they wrote to each other.  Finally‚ Mahanandia decided to take the leap. He sold everything he owned and bought a bicycle. He set out on his journey of five thousand miles‚ and kind souls helped him along the way. He exchanged drawings for money‚ food‚ and shelter.  He traveled through Pakistan‚ Afghanistan‚ Iran‚ and Turkey. Afghanistan was calm and peaceful in 1977. Many people understood Hindi‚ but it became more difficult to communicate once he reached Iran. Still‚ he kept going. “Again art came to my rescue‚” Mahanandia recalled. “I think love is the universal language and people understand that.” At times he rode in trucks. Mostly‚ though‚ he spent his days biking – over forty miles each day – and his nights sleeping under the stars. He reached Europe in late May‚ over four months after starting out‚ and traveled from Austria to Sweden by train. The couple reunited and married under Swedish law. P.K. Mahanandia and Charlotte Von Schedvin have two children together. For many years‚ he taught art and she taught music. Eventually‚ he became an art and culture advisor for the Swedish government They’ve been married for nearly fifty years. The post Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia: The man who cycled across the world for love first appeared on History Defined.

What to Do When You Discover You’re Wrong – Senior Living – November 21

What to Do When You Discover You're Wrong But when he‚ the Spirit of truth‚ comes‚ he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears‚ and he will tell you what is yet to come." – John 16:13 A man awoke very early one morning to find a puddle of water in the middle of his king-size waterbed. In order to fix the puncture‚ he rolled the heavy mattress outside and filled it with more water to help him find the leak more quickly. The enormous bag of water was impossible to control and began rolling downhill. He tried to stop it‚ but it went straight into a clump of thorny bushes‚ which poked it full of holes‚ Angry‚ the man threw out the waterbed frame and moved a standard bed into his room. Hours later‚ he woke to find a puddle of water in the middle of the new bed. The upstairs bathroom had a leaky pipe. Sometimes the most difficult thing to accept is when you've been wrong all along. That's because all people have a natural tendency to defend their decisions at all costs. But when the time comes and you're confronted with the truth‚ accepting it can be so hard. This is why it's so hard for many to accept Christ as their Savior. Because to do so would mean that everything they've believed in up to now – and maybe most everything they were taught – is wrong. Be humble enough to admit what's true when you're faced with it‚ even if it means you're wrong. It's better to be late to the truth than to live in a lie! Prayer Challenge: Pray and ask God to help you accept truth even when it conflicts with what you believe. Questions for Thought: Think of a time when what you thought was right turned out to be wrong. How did it make you feel? If we're firmly convinced the gospel is the truth‚ then what is our responsibility to those who don't believe it's true? When You’re Walking Through a Spiritual Fog –  Encouragement for Today – November 21‚ 2023

November 21‚ 2023 When You're Walking Through a Spiritual FogABBY MCDONALD Lee en español "... Let the little children come to me‚ and do not hinder them‚ for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you‚ anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." Mark 10:14-15 (NIV) "I'm hugging God‚" my daughter said with a smile. "He's hugging me‚ too‚ I think." She wrapped her arms around her tiny frame and snuggled in her bed. Her face was the perfect picture of contentment. I knelt beside her and said a bedtime prayer‚ amazed at her childlike faith. "He is hugging you‚" I said as I walked toward the door. And I believed it. But even as I said it‚ I longed to feel His presence like my 5-year-old did. For months‚ I'd felt like I was walking through a never-ending spiritual fog. My tried-and-true ways of connecting with God weren't working‚ and my faith felt tired and routine. When I opened my Bible‚ I didn't feel the same fervor I once had. This wasn't the first time I'd gone through a season like this‚ but this one hit me with a new intensity. Doubt in my ability to hear God turned into discouragement‚ and I wondered what I was doing wrong. As I reflected on my daughter's statement‚ I realized something. She knew she didn't have to do anything extraordinary to feel God's embrace. Instead‚ she curled up and enjoyed it. Sometimes I fall into a pattern of thinking I need to have everything completed on an invisible checklist to attain connection with God. But God wants me to enjoy Him like a kid lost in her daddy's embrace. In the same way I relish sunshine on my face on a winter day‚ He wants me to know His warmth isn't dependent on anything I do or don't do. In Mark 10‚ we see people were bringing their children to Jesus for Him to put His hands on them and bless them. When His disciples rebuked the parents‚ Jesus admonished‚ "Let the little children come to me‚ and do not hinder them‚ for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you‚ anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it" (Mark 10:14-15). As I studied these verses‚ one word stood out to me: "receive." Jesus reminds us that the Kingdom of God is a gift we receive‚ not something we strive to attain by completing items on a checklist. When we declare our faith with our mouths and accept Jesus as Lord‚ we are given a place in His Kingdom forever. In the weeks after the bedtime prayer with my daughter‚ I added this to my morning prayer: God‚ help me live in the joy of Your presence. I continued to pray throughout the day and on my evening walks‚ and I added this simple request. While there wasn't a sudden shift or a light-bulb moment‚ with time‚ I noticed God’s presence in everyday moments I had often overlooked before. The birds making a nest right outside our kitchen window. The way the morning sun lit up the dew on our lawn like glitter. Instead of approaching my time with God like a chore‚ I allowed myself to be still. Although dry seasons still come‚ God used this time of my life to awaken the childlike wonder in me. He showed me how a simple‚ heartfelt prayer can shift my perspective‚ and it's one I continue to pray today. God‚ thank You for the gift of uncomplicated faith. Thank You for the ability to come to You without a list of to-dos and to be still in Your presence. When we stumble through spiritual fog or lose our wonder‚ renew our childlike amazement in You. In Jesus' Name‚ Amen.  OUR FAVORITE THINGS Opportunities to see God's goodness are all around us. We just have to take the time to notice them. He said the motive was under investigation. “What we can say at the moment is that Mr. Baudet was hit on the head‚ possibly with an object‚” De Jong said. He said he could not give further details or comment on Baudet’s condition. Baudet’s party said on X that an event that had been planned for later Monday in another city had been cancelled “in connection with the health and security” of him. It did not elaborate. Baudet was assaulted by a man wielding an umbrella while in Belgium last month. From POLITICO: Dutch far-right leader Thierry Baudet was attacked Thursday night by a man wielding an umbrella. Baudet‚ leader of the Forum for Democracy party (FVD)‚ was in the Belgian city of Ghent to give a lecture at an event organized by a conservative university association. In a video posted on social media by Belgian right-wing politician Filip Dewinter‚ a man lashed out at Baudet‚ striking him hard with a brolly. Dewinter said the incident was a “disgrace for our security services.” According to Belgian outlet VRT‚ the attacker shouted an anti-fascist message and was taken away by police. Dutch politicians of all stripes condemned the attack. WATCH (WARNING – GRAPHIC): Nederlands politicus @thierrybaudet aangevallen nav toespraak aan @ugent… Politie staat erbij en kijkt ernaar.
