Google Chrome update limiting ad blockers coming in June 2024

Last fall‚ Google caused an uproar by announcing that it would begin winding down support for Manifest V2 extensions in Chrome in 2023. Because this would have a largely negative impact on several popular extensions‚ including ad blockers‚ the backlash was swift. Google ended up scrapping those plans and postponing the migration to Manifest V3. But it did not cancel those plans‚ and last week‚ the company announced that the transition is back on. According to product manager David Li‚ Google will begin disabling Manifest V2 extensions in pre-stable versions of Chrome as early as June 2024. That means anyone on the Dev‚ Canary‚ and Beta channels with Chrome 127 or later will lose access first. Previously installed Manifest V2 extensions will be automatically disabled‚ and users won't be able to install any Manifest V2 extensions from the Chrome Web Store either. "We expect it will take at least a month to observe and stabilize the changes in pre-stable before expanding the rollout to stable channel Chrome‚ where it will also gradually roll out over time‚" Li adds. "The exact timing may vary depending on the data collected‚ and during this time‚ we will keep you informed about our progress." It sounds like users on the stable channel will see the changes in July 2024 at the earliest. Google says it addressed the most serious concerns of extension developers prior to resuming the transition from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3. In order to prove that point‚ the company shared this quote from AdGuard CTO Andrey Meshkov about Google Chrome: With Manifest V3‚ we've observed the immense effort that browser teams (Chrome in particular‚ but also other browsers) are putting into working on a unified platform‚ and I see how they are listening to the feedback from extension developers. As always‚ migrating to a new platform is a large undertaking‚ but we're very hopeful that the new unified platform will bring substantial benefits to the entire browser extensions ecosystem‚ and that ad blockers like us will be able to continue being up to the task and further improve. This is in stark contrast to Google's approach to ad blockers on YouTube. The company recently began cracking down on YouTube users who use ad blockers‚ forcing them to either turn off their extensions or find complicated workarounds. Google even admitted users with ad blockers "may experience suboptimal viewing‚ regardless of the browser they are using." ‘Woke’ Museum Declares Ancient Roman Emperor Was Actually a Trans Woman‚ Used Pronouns

A UK museum has stirred controversy by declaring the ancient Roman emperor Elagabalus as a transgender woman and using female pronouns when referring to the ruler. The North Hertfordshire Museum claims this decision is based on classical texts that suggest Elagabalus’s preference for being called a “lady” and a “wife.” However‚ the move has sparked… The post ‘Woke’ Museum Declares Ancient Roman Emperor Was Actually a Trans Woman‚ Used Pronouns appeared first on The Federalist Papers.

When Inequality Is Fatal for Men

When Inequality Is Fatal for Men

Equality always has been an American preoccupation‚ right from the words “all men are created equal” in the Declaration of Independence. Yet even that phrase is not egalitarian enough by today’s lights; feminists long have objected to the gendered language of “all men.” Thomas Jefferson didn’t mean to commit a microaggression; in 1776‚ “all men” meant women‚ too. We know this because the Founding Fathers—must we say Founding Parents?—argued about the mismatch between their universal philosophy and the endemic inequalities of their time‚ with Abigail Adams asking her husband John to “remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors” when the time came for America to declare independence. Today‚ however‚ men and women are becoming increasingly unequal—and in one of the most basic measures of well-being‚ it’s men who keep falling further behind. Life expectancy has declined for all Americans in recent years. It’s fallen more for men than for women‚ though‚ producing the largest gender gap in nearly two decades. According to a study in JAMA Internal Medicine‚ as of 2021 women were outliving men by 5.8 years. As much as postmodern academics and progressive political activists may deny it‚ there are natural differences between the sexes‚ and the mere fact that women live longer is not so surprising. For one thing‚ men are disproportionately employed in the nation’s most hazardous jobs‚ including as loggers‚ roofers‚ construction workers‚ aircraft pilots‚ and steel workers. And if a male propensity for risk-taking makes men more successful in certain executive and entrepreneurial roles‚ it also leads to more men and boys dying young of misadventure and accident. But the gap in longevity has widened by a full year since 2010‚ when it was at an historic minimum of 4.8 years. Human nature hasn’t changed in that time; rather‚ something has changed in America to make it a deadlier place for men. COVID-19 contributed twice over‚ to the extent that the disease may have affected men more severely and they‚ in turn‚ were less inclined to take its flu-like symptoms seriously. Deaths from despair have ravaged both sexes‚ but suicide and overdose do exacerbate the gender disparity‚ with men at greater risk of dying from each of those causes. Unsurprisingly‚ men are also more likely to die by homicide‚ and when violent crime escalates‚ male life expectancy predictably will fall. But there are less obvious forces in play‚ too. Men are less likely to go to college or complete a degree‚ which in an increasingly service-oriented and knowledge-based economy translates into worse life and career prospects—conditions that foster deaths from despair. Whether ironically or cynically‚ progressives can be conservative and hidebound in their assumptions about inequality: They presume that whoever was more-than-equal in the past must still be privileged today‚ and so the one kind of inequality that doesn’t prick the progressive conscience is whatever harms groups that were formerly better off. Income inequality and racial inequality are outrages that fill the streets with protesters from Occupy Wall Street or Black Lives Matter—but there won’t be any protests over men’s worsening life prospects. Then again‚ the last thing men need is to be designated as another victim group. Right now‚ the very concept of manhood is under attack from two directions: from those on the left who see masculinity as inherently “toxic” and those on the right who idolize the likes of Andrew Tate—overgrown adolescent hedonists without an ounce of self-control‚ let alone any traditionally manly moral responsibilities for family or others. If life is unfair to men‚ the masculine remedy is not to complain about unfairness but to be tough enough‚ and mature enough‚ to endure and prosper despite inequality. That doesn’t mean that men don’t need help‚ especially when facing despair‚ but a sense of social or political victimhood is only destructive; what kills men is not something that can be solved with another equality-demanding movement. As dedicated as our Founding Fathers were to equality—even to the point of recognizing in principle‚ if not in practice‚ that the words of the Declaration of Independence applied to women and black people as well as to white men—they did not believe that everyone could or should be equal in every way. Men and women will forever be different‚ and the ways they differ will not always be favorable to men. Rather than seeing this as a betrayal of equality‚ or overlooking it as a politically incorrect fact‚ the best response is to treat men as men and women as women in their virtues and hardships alike—and look to men’s strengths for the answer to their plight. History Hit Reveals Winners of Historic Photographer of the Year 2023

History Hit has revealed the winners of the Historic Photographer of the Year Competition for 2023. Josh Dury‚ from Bath‚ won in the Overall category‚ for his shot of the Callanish Standing Stones in the Outer Hebrides‚ photographed at sunrise as mist enveloped the ancient site. Scott Macintyre won in the Historic England category and George Anthony Fisk won in the World History category. “Judging this year’s captivating entries was a true honour‚” said Dan Snow‚ Creative Director at History Hit. “Witnessing the fusion of past and present through these lens masterpieces has been inspiring.” The competition received over 1‚000 entries‚ which were judged based on originality‚ composition and technical proficiency alongside the history behind the image. Find out more about the entries below. Historic England Winner The Historic England category was won by Scott Macintyre for his image of the Windy Post Cross in Dartmoor. “Sometimes known as the Beckamoor Cross‚ this granite cross is very well preserved‚ known to be erected around the 16th century.”   “This beautiful photograph offers a gaze at the stillness of time‚ seen in the Cross‚ and the passing of time with the running of the water over the rocks‚” said judge Marissa Roth. “Wayside crosses are one of the distinctive features of Dartmoor‚ and this beautiful and atmospheric image captures brilliantly the way in which this ancient monument has become such an intrinsic part of Dartmoor’s historic landscape‚” said judge Claudia Kenyatta‚ Director of Regions at Historic England. World History Winner George Anthony Fisk‚ from Whitsable in Kent‚ was judged the World History winner for his haunting photograph of Auschwitz-Birkenau. “A truly sad and harrowing place to visit‚” he explained. “I did wrestle with the photography aspect and what was right and wrong with respecting the victims of the holocaust. It must however be remembered‚ and images of Auschwitz and Birkenau are a reminder of this period in world history.” “This is a familiar composition‚ but that doesn’t make it any less powerful or important‚” commented judge Marissa Roth. “What this haunting black and white photograph shows us is a timeless time. It was taken now‚ but could have been taken on a tragic foggy day in 1944.” Overall Winner Dan Snow commended Josh Dury’s winning photograph of the Callanish Standing Stones: “Standing stones at sunrise with a gentle mist rising? That’s the holy grail for historical photography. Absolute perfection.” “This image is evocative on many levels‚” said judge Marissa Roth‚ “as an ode to ancient human history‚ as a symbol of hope and renewal‚ and as a very beautiful well-executed and thoughtful photograph.” Judge Philip Mowbray added: “It is a gorgeous scene; the sunrise is perfectly placed to give this image a mythical‚ otherworldly element synonymous with the stones. Stunning.” The panel of judges included Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Marissa Roth‚ Claudia Kenyatta‚ Director of Regions at Historic England‚ and History Hit’s Dan Snow. Also judging the competition were Philip Mowbray‚ Editor of PicFair’s Focus magazine‚ and Andrew Hepburn‚ Deputy Picture Editor for The Times. The entire shortlist can be seen here. View a selection of shortlisted entries below. Glencoe by Pete Stevens Judge Philip Mowbray commented: “Glencoe is synonymous with photographers‚ but you rarely see a combination like this with the memorial‚ not to mention a rainbow like this. This image has everything‚ and it perfectly captures how spectacular Glencoe is‚ but also the drama and darkness the place holds too. It is able to both be a scene of beauty but also remind viewers of the bloodshed that occurred there.” Bluebell Railway featuring the Flying Scotsman by Michael Steven Harris “A very well-seen and well-executed photograph taking us back in time to placing the Flying Scotsman in the context of the landscape and beautiful light‚” commented judge Marissa Roth. Lindisfarne Castle by Jim Scott “I noticed a flock of birds resting on the sand at low tide and waited for them to take flight in front of the castle‚” explained Jim Scott‚ “allowing me to capture this shot which I’ve called ‘The early birds of Lindisfarne’.” “Everything about this is just stunning‚ the silhouettes‚ the birds‚ the golden hour colour palette…” said Philip Mowbray. “Having previously lived in Northumberland and spent much time at Lindisfarne‚ it really is a magical place‚ and I feel the photographer has captured that magic in this single frame.” Utah Beach‚ France by Graham Alan Harries “The 80th anniversary of World War II is almost upon us‚ but the reminders that the consequences of war‚ from the toll on those who fought‚ to the civilians who perished‚ and the unimaginable destruction that was wrought‚ must never be forgotten‚” comments judge Marissa Roth. “This photograph‚ taken just before nightfall is both eerie and evocative of what was lost‚ but that life continues to go on.” Little Moreton Hall by Chris Green “This was taken using my phone (iPhone 12) in January 23 as I arrived at work‚” explains photographer Chris Green. “Little Moreton Hall is probably the most complete Tudor farm house in England – this view is of the South Range and main entrance‚ dating from the 1560’s.” Castle an Dinas‚ Cornwall by Colin Hart Colin Hart’s sunset photograph of Castle an Dinas was taken in August 2023. “Castle an Dinas is a spectacular Iron Age fort with some indications of activity back to Neolithic times. In March 1646 Royalist forces held a Council of War at Castle an Dinas to decide upon their surrender to the forces of Parliament.” View the complete shortlist here.
