Outlast: Behind the Scenes

From classics like Survivorman to long-running series like Alone‚ we've enjoyed many TV shows in the broader survival genre. Whether they lean more toward hard-core realism or entertainment value‚ there's almost always something valuable we can glean from the comfort of our couch — even if it's just “I'm never going to make the same dumb mistake that person did.” The latest addition to this genre‚ Netflix's Outlast‚ incorporates a competitive group dynamic that's reminiscent of Lord of the Flies. The series' tagline‚ “the enemy isn't Mother Nature‚ it's human nature‚” attests to this fact. We spoke with series Executive Producer Grant Kahler regarding the intricacies of planning Outlast‚ keeping the contestants and crew safe‚ and what it takes to survive in the Alaskan wilderness. If you're not already familiar with the show‚ you can watch it on Netflix now. Otherwise‚ read on for our exclusive Q&;A with Kahler. And for those who haven't finished the series‚ don't worry‚ it doesn't contain any spoilers. Above: The rugged Alaskan wilderness served as the setting for this eight-episode series. Behind the Scenes of Outlast RECOIL OFFGRID: Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into TV/movie production. Grant Kahler: Being in TV production is simply something I always wanted to do. After college I moved to New York‚ and my first job was in TV production on a television show called Ed for NBC. I worked in every aspect of production‚ from directing to accounting‚ on projects from Bruckheimer films to independent music videos‚ and eventually landed in documentary and unscripted TV production. What exactly does an executive producer do? There’s a huge range of responsibilities that an executive producer might be responsible for — from simply helping with the development of a show to physically being in the field and making the show. My role on Outlast was a little of both. I created the format as well as oversaw production from creative to logistics. Above: Executive Producer Grant Kahler said capturing all the action in such a remote setting was both challenging and rewarding. How did you get into survival reality shows‚ and what do you think the draw is for the audience in this kind of program? I was originally drawn to this type of programming because I simply loved the environments we would shoot them in. I loved being deep in the jungles of Southeast Asia or up in the mountains of Alaska. I have lived in big cities most of my life‚ so the opportunity to get to go to these far-out places has always been a very special perk of the job for me. And I think that is also part of the answer to the second part of the question — I believe that’s partly why people like to watch these shows. It’s in these beautiful places where we get to watch people as we take them back to the basics of human survival. Our society and technology has evolved so incredibly rapidly that I think it’s nice to see what life is like when we strip ourselves of those things — both physically and socially. And there is always that question that a viewer asks themselves‚ “Could I do it?” Logistically‚ what kind of hurdles do you face putting a show like this together? I make these shows incredibly difficult on myself and my crew because location is always so important to me. With these extremely remote locations‚ often comes massive logistical challenges. But in the end‚ I think it’s worth it. It makes the experience more real for the cast‚ which often translates into a better show. I’d say the number-one logistical challenge is transportation. I can’t count the number of times we have had to dig trucks out of ditches‚ race a rising tide to get to a destination‚ hike around washed-out roads‚ dig vehicles out of snow‚ or drag beached boats back to the water. We tend to film these shows in pretty extreme environments with little to no infrastructure‚ so transportation must be reimagined every time in order to move crew and allow for emergency access and evacuation. What kind of off-set or behind-the-scenes safety precautions are there for the contestants? For Outlast‚ we always had medics and bear guards on standby in the event of an emergency. We had to constantly be aware that hypothermia or a bear mauling‚ among many other things‚ were very real possibilities. So‚ we employed people to be able to handle those situations. What kind of support do you utilize‚ in terms of real-world survival experts‚ to conceptualize or guide the show through production? I always bring in experts to help figure out the details of a show. On this one‚ for example‚ we hired an ex SBS operative (UK Special Forces) who has special jungle warfare‚ SERE and combat medicine training‚ among many other things. He’s an expert in all things survival‚ from both his military experience to personal interest‚ so I leaned on him a lot to help with the logistics and some creative decisions. On Outlast‚ we were lucky to have a Native American village by the name of Hoonah about 30 miles from our location. We employed them to help with safety consultation‚ plant and animal questions‚ logistical support and just about everything else you can imagine. We couldn’t have pulled this off without the people of Hoonah. What do you look for in an Outlast contestant‚ and how do you find them? This is hard to answer because it’s never one specific thing. Some people might have a unique skillset while others might simply have an interesting backstory. For shows like this‚ the only real requirement is that they have some sort of extensive outdoor experience. These are hard-core environments we’re putting people into‚ so for the sake of safety‚ they need to at the very least know what they might be getting themselves into. We typically find cast through online forums‚ social media‚ or even outdoor gatherings. Oftentimes‚ it’s word of mouth that ends up getting the application to the right people. Above: As a result of the show's positive reception‚ Netflix has confirmed that it will be coming back for season two in the future. Based on your experience/observation‚ what qualities does a successful contestant have? At the end of the day‚ no matter what the format is‚ a successful contestant is going to be incredibly skilled in all things outdoors. All of the psychological‚ sociological‚ and strategic advantages go out the window if someone doesn’t have basic skills. Beyond that‚ they must be patient. People often don’t understand how difficult these shows can be to get through. Patience can be everything — something most people just don’t have anymore. Are Tasers Legal in New Jersey? What You Should Know

Although the self-defense and weapons laws of the United States vary considerably depending on what state you are in‚ some states stand out as truly byzantine‚ genuinely tyrannical and outwardly hateful towards the rights of citizens. flag of New Jersey New Jersey is one such state‚ one that never found a case of government overreach and overregulation that it didn’t like. New Jersey is well known for its hatred for guns‚ and more weapons than that besides. How about tasers? Are tasers legal in New Jersey? Yes‚ tasers are legal in New Jersey due to a Supreme Court decision handed down in 2016. However‚ the statutory regulations on tasers are still on the books‚ and they are classified as prohibited weapons. Presently‚ you can purchase and carry a taser because the laws are unenforceable. You see how they did that? Even when they get smacked down by higher authority in the land‚ one coming down on the side of the citizens for a change‚ New Jersey still finds a way to create uncertainty‚ to make you squirm. Such is the case with tasers‚ although the legal situation seems stable enough for now there’s no telling what might happen in the future. Believe me‚ if you are considering a taser in the Garden State there is a whole lot you need to know before you pull the trigger. Keep reading… How are Tasers Classified in New Jersey? Tasers have a specific definition in New Jersey and also a specific classification among other weapons. The definition‚ they are defined as “stun guns‚” meaning any weapon which emits a temporary or permanently disabling electrical charge. They are also‚ most worryingly‚ still listed in 2:39-3 under prohibited weapons and devices by name. Prior to the Supreme Court decision‚ this meant that stun guns were utterly prohibited in New Jersey. No exceptions for civilians whatsoever. Now‚ New Jersey has conspicuously left them in the aforementioned section of prohibited weapons‚ listed accordingly‚ though the laws have been declared unenforceable concerning these devices. Be wary… 2C:39-1. Definitions. The following definitions apply to this chapter and to chapter 58: … t. “Stun gun” means any weapon or other device which emits an electrical charge or current intended to temporarily or permanently disable a person. … 2C:39-3. Prohibited Weapons and Devices. … h. Stun guns. Any person who knowingly has in his possession any stun gun is guilty of a crime of the fourth degree. … So‚ Tasers are Actually Prohibited in New Jersey?! No‚ as has been publicly declared by the New Jersey attorney general’s office and the state police. At least for now‚ it is legal to purchase‚ possess and carry a stun gun or taser in New Jersey. And this isn’t just my conjecture‚ either: read for yourself the statement from the New Jersey State Police below. Per the New Jersey State Police’s Firearms FAQ Page: 26. Are Tasers legal? Can I carry one? Yes‚ an October 20‚ 2017 Memorandum from the State of New Jersey Office of Attorney General reviewed the findings of a Supreme Court decision and a Consent Order signed into effect by the State of New Jersey states that Stun Guns in New Jersey are legal for sale and possession with only two restrictions. You must be 18 years of age or older to purchase or possess and you must not be a certain persons prohibited against purchasing or possessing one as per N.J.S.A. 2C:39-7(a). Are Stun Guns Legal in New Jersey? Yes‚ stun guns are legal in New Jersey. I’m not being redundant here‚ and this bears a point of clarification: practically speaking‚ tasers and stun guns are different devices. Tasers are the ones that fire the darts‚ or probes‚ that stick into the target before the current is transmitted into them through wires that connect the probes to the launching device. Stun guns‚ on the other hand‚ are those little box-shaped units that have the electrodes on the front‚ the ones that arc so menacingly when the device is switched on. New Jersey makes no legal distinction whatsoever between these two types of devices according to the definition. Can You Carry a Taser Openly in New Jersey? Yes. Open carry of stun guns and tasers in New Jersey is still likely prohibited according to a strict interpretation of the laws as written. Although nominally they’re no longer on the list of prohibited weapons by function of the laws being unenforceable. For now‚ you’re probably safe carrying a taser or stun gun openly‚ but I would highly recommend that you keep it hidden from view while in a public place. Can You Carry a Taser Concealed in New Jersey? Yes. Concealed carry of tasers and stun guns should be legal under the current interpretation of the statues. As long as you aren’t carrying it for any overtly criminal purpose‚ and you may be in legal possession of the taser‚ you should be able to conceal it. See 2C:39-4 for more. 2C:39-4. Possession of weapons for unlawful purposes. … d. Other weapons. Any person who has in his possession any weapon‚ except a firearm‚ with a purpose to use it unlawfully against the person or property of another is guilty of a crime of the third degree. … Are there Age Restrictions on Taser Ownership or Possession in New Jersey? Yes. Regardless of the Supreme Court decision‚ you still have to be 18 years old or older to legally buy‚ own‚ and carry a taser in New Jersey. What Do You Need to Do to Purchase a Taser in New Jersey? If you want to purchase a taser in New Jersey you’ll need to go to a dealer that sells the device‚ whichever one you choose. Note that they can be surprisingly tough to find in this state due to the uncertainty now hovering over the heads of dealers and retailers. New Jersey is a downright nefarious state when it comes to governance‚ and it isn’t out of the question that the state might institute new‚ harsh and potentially devastating statutes concerning the sale and disposition of tasers and stun guns. In any case‚ assuming you find a dealer‚ you’ll be able to purchase one as long as you aren’t a felon‚ haven’t been convicted of domestic violence‚ or other reasons that would disqualify you from possession. See a partial list below‚ but make sure you open and read the entire section yourself because it’s quite lengthy when it comes to disqualifying factors. 2C:39-7 Certain persons not to have weapons or ammunition. … 6. Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons or Ammunition. a. Except as provided in subsection b. of this section‚ any person‚ having been convicted in this State or elsewhere of the crime‚ or an attempt or conspiracy to commit the crime‚ of aggravated assault‚ arson‚ burglary‚ escape‚ extortion‚ homicide‚ kidnapping‚ robbery‚ aggravated sexual assault‚ sexual assault‚ bias intimidation in violation of N.J.S.2C:16-1‚ carjacking in violation of section 1 of P.L.1993‚ c.221 (C.2C:15-2)‚ gang criminality in violation of section 1 of P.L.2007‚ c.341 (C.2C:33-29)‚(…) … Is Training Mandatory for Taser Ownership in New Jersey? No. At press time‚ New Jersey does not mandate any special training or other qualifications to purchase or possess a taser. Where Can You Carry a Taser in New Jersey? Carrying any kind of weapon in New Jersey is fraught with peril‚ and even though tasers have something of a special exception presently‚ all of the other statutes concerning weapons still apply to them… Generally‚ you cannot carry your taser anywhere that has a sign up barring firearms or other weapons‚ or into any school or onto any school grounds‚ you can’t carry it into a courtroom or courthouse‚ nor into any other government building‚ be it state‚ local‚ or federal. As usual‚ you also cannot carry your taser or any other weapon into the secured area of an airport beyond the security checkpoint or into the same zone of a seaport. When Can You Use a Taser to Defend Yourself in New Jersey? The only time you can ever use your taser on someone in New Jersey is in a legitimate case of self-defense when you are in fear of death or great bodily injury and can articulate as much in court. Keep in mind that tasers can potentially inflict great bodily harm or death themselves‚ and that makes the deployment of a taser or a stun gun a very serious act in the State of New Jersey. Irresponsible use is likely to see you charged with a felony crime of battery. The post Are Tasers Legal in New Jersey? What You Should Know appeared first on Survival Sullivan.

The World Is Getting Tired of Ukraine vs. Russia

Ever since the October 7 attacks against Israeli civilians‚ the conflict in Ukraine has largely disappeared from public view.  Less than two years ago‚ Ukrainian flags and signs of solidarity were everywhere. What’s going on now?  Are people still getting killed?  Are we still arming them?  Is peace being negotiated? Early in November‚ Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny admitted in an interview with The Economist that the war is at a stalemate.  He stated frankly that Russia has three times as many men as they do‚ and that their technology is too similar for a huge breakthrough unless the Ukrainians are given some kind of massive technological advantage. President Zelensky has always been insistent that Ukraine can beat off Russia‚ and for a long time‚ General Zaluzhny was‚ too.  After the slow counteroffensive this spring‚ rather than admitting any difficulties within the Ukrainian military‚ he was quick to blame Americans‚ saying we were not giving him enough advanced weaponry.   But Ukrainian men are leaving as fast as they can. General Zaluzhny also blames the huge amount of Ukrainian men avoiding conscription.  Ever since the beginning of the Russian invasion‚ men between the ages of 18 and 60 have been forbidden from leaving the country.  However‚ many men have taken advantage of the chaos to leave anyway. The BBC estimates that 650‚000 Ukrainian men within this age group have left for Europe since the fighting began. This data came from Eurostat‚ which did not specify whether those 650‚000 men had legal or medical exemptions.  But authorities do know that at least 20‚000 eligible men have evaded conscription. Draft dodging had been facilitated by Ukraine’s notoriously corrupt government. In August‚ it was announced that dozens of Ukrainian officials would face criminal charges over helping conscripted men leave Ukraine. This firing of officials has effectively stopped recruitment.  The average age of Ukrainian soldiers is 43.  They have 60-year-old men fighting already and are now considering removing all age limits for military personnel. Ukraine already had an old and unhealthy population. The massive loss of young life in the war is leaving the population even older and sicker.  They have gotten so desperate for personnel that pregnant women are serving. The US wants Ukraine to negotiate with Russia. Given these dire personnel shortages‚ NBC reported that a group of Americans and Europeans met with Zelensky early in November to discuss what they would be willing to give up in negotiating with the Russians.  Biden administration officials are openly worried that the Ukrainians are running out of forces. All the weapons in the world won’t make a difference without people on the ground to use them. For now‚ Zelensky still doesn’t want to hear it.  He insists that no one can make him negotiate. However‚ Zelensky cannot fight the war alone.  In fact‚ he hasn’t been fighting at all. He’s been jetting around the world drumming up money.  And the man who has been managing the battlefields‚ as Zelensky and his wife stock up on yachts‚ is done. Just this week‚ Ukrainian National Defense‚ Security‚ and Intelligence member Mariana Bezhula said that General Zaluzhny should resign after he refused to submit a battle plan for 2024.  Bezhula is now at risk of losing her job because she publicly complained about the general. Redacted discussed this a little more in-depth during their November 27 episode.  Between minutes 40:00 and 57:00‚ they describe how‚ when General Zaluzhny was pressed for plans for next year‚ he said that he would need an extra 20‚000 men per month simply to not lose ground.  He knows this won’t happen and‚ therefore‚ didn’t submit a plan. There are demographic problems in both Russia and Ukraine. It is worth noting that Russia and Ukraine both have serious long-term demographic problems.  In 2005‚ Russia’s birth rate was 1.3 births per woman‚ while Ukraine’s was 1.2‚ both of which are far below the replacement rate of 2.1. When Putin became president‚ he prioritized increasing Russia’s birthrate.  The government began offering financial incentives to have children.  Who knows whether it was the financial incentives or the overall promotion of family values? Either way‚ during the past 15 years‚ Russia’s birth rate has gone up to 1.58 births per woman.  Of course‚ Putin is proud of this‚ but the fact remains that 1.58 is still below the replacement rate.  Combine this with the fact that Russia’s average age is 43‚ and you have an unhealthy long-term demographic situation. Ukraine’s situation is worse.  In 2021‚ their total fertility rate was still 1.2‚ unchanged from 2005.  In 2022‚ it dropped to 0.9. While numbers aren’t in for 2023 yet‚ it’s expected to be 0.7. The Ukrainians have almost completely stopped having children and I say that without any judgment.  I can’t imagine planning a family in their situation either.  But with an average age of 40.8‚ they are facing a demographic collapse. Europe wants the conflict to end‚ too. It seems to me that both sides have every reason to cut the losses of their young men‚ and perhaps that’s why Putin just moved the world’s most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile‚ the Yars‚ closer to Europe.  Russia is now able to strike London in less than five minutes.  Maybe he hopes this will make the US and EU pressure President Zelensky to negotiate. The overall desire for Ukraine to end the conflict has been increasing‚ with or without Doomsday missiles‚ with or without admission from high-level officials. Tensions are rising across Europe over the flood of migrants‚ both from Ukraine as well as other parts of the world.  We saw the riots in Ireland over the stabbing of young children this weekend.  That particular incident involved an Algerian migrant‚ but Ireland has been overwhelmed by migrants in general the past few years.  The massive amount of Ukrainian refugees that Ireland‚ a small nation‚ has been expected to absorb has pushed the country to a snapping point. And Ireland’s not alone.  Polish truckers have blockaded the roads that go between Poland and Ukraine. Truckers in Poland are no longer letting Ukrainians cross because Ukrainian drivers have been undercutting Polish prices.  After the war started‚ the EU lifted all restrictions on Ukrainian carriers.  EU bureaucrats think they’re just helping the people of Ukraine‚ but the reality is that whenever you start messing with trade rules‚ there are always second- and third-order consequences.  Polish truckers are sick of the competitive advantage given to the Ukrainian truckers affecting their livelihood‚ and they’re making themselves heard. For all the rhetoric coming from the political class in Europe‚ the average citizens seem burned out on the endless stream of refugees.  Americans are burned out as well; while politicians can’t seem to find the money to secure our own border‚ they have sent $110 billion to Ukraine for its border‚ 96% of which has already been spent. Peace may not be a long-term solution. Most people‚ at most times‚ want to be left alone to enjoy their families and the fruits of their labors.  And while I understand this urge to demand that politicians sit down and negotiate some kind of peace treaty‚ I don’t see a long-term solution.  Let me explain. Ukraine really wants to join NATO‚ as we all know.  Jens Stoltenberg‚ the president of NATO‚ has repeatedly said that Ukraine can eventually join NATO and‚ in fact has even waived some of the normal requirements to make it easier for them.  But he says Ukraine cannot join while it is still fighting with Russia. Putin has made it clear‚ for years‚ that he considers NATO expansion into Ukraine to be a red line.  If the Russians and Ukrainians negotiate some kind of peace agreement‚ for now‚ and then in six months Ukraine is fully accepted into NATO‚ what happens?  Will Russia launch another attack?  I don’t think it’s unlikely. I don’t say any of this to discourage the people actually fighting.  But those of us not on the battlefield should at least try to understand what’s going on.  Fighting in Ukraine hasn’t stopped just because American legacy media is pushing interest in Israel right now.  It’s easy to slap a bumper sticker on your car. It’s less easy to have your community absorb waves of refugees. It’s incredibly difficult to fight in the trenches. We need to be careful about what kind of promises we make.  I don’t see any quick solutions for Ukraine.  But I could be wrong! What do you think? Is the fighting between Ukraine and Russia near an end? Have world governments lost interest in supporting Ukraine? Will one of the countries take desperate steps to keep the fight going? How do you see this turning out? Let’s discuss it in the comments section.
