The first trailer for A24’s upcoming film Civil War was released on Wednesday. The movie‚ scheduled to hit theaters April 26‚ 2024‚ depicts the United States falling into chaos and civil unrest. Alex Garland‚ who wrote 28 Days Later and Ex Machina‚ wrote and directed the film. “19 states have seceded. The United States Army ramps up activity‚” the trailer opens‚ showing a desolate highway with stranded vehicles everywhere. California and Texas are referred to as the “Western Forces” and there’s also a “Florida Alliance.” In one scene‚ an individual on the radio says the three-term president will handle the uprising swiftly. Another scene shows air strikes being conducted on American cities. “There’s some kind of misunderstanding here. We’re American‚ okay‚” a man says to another man holding a rifle in one scene. “Okay. What kind of American are you?” the man with the rifle asks. The trailer shows the tagline‚ “All Empires Fall.” The trailer ends with a helicopter flying over a war-torn Washington D.C. Civil War stars Kirsten Dunst‚ Wagner Moura‚ Cailee Spaeny‚ and Stephen McKinley Henderson‚ alongside Nick Offerman as the president and frequent Garland collaborator Sonoya Mizuno. Garland is coming off last year’s folk horror film Men‚ and his previous work includes Ex Machina‚ the FX series Devs‚ and an adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation. Bruce‚ in an interview with The Guardian‚ explained that he and a fellow astronaut moved freely because they were strapped into Manned Maneuvering Units. "It was a wonderful feeling‚ a mix of personal elation and professional pride: it had taken many years to get to that point‚" Bruce said. And I stayed alongside the shuttle the whole time‚ moving 100 yards one way‚ 100 yards back‚" Bruce stated. During his multi-hour walk in outer space‚ Bruce was moving at a mind-blowing rate of speed. I was traveling at more than 18‚000 miles an hour‚" Bruce said. "But wasn't aware of it because the shuttle was going at the same speed. It was only when I looked at the Earth that I could tell we were moving fairly rapidly."
