Elon Musk’s Neuralink Implants First Brain Chip Into Human Subject

In a massive step forward for Elon Musk’s controversial Neuralink project‚ the tech billionaire announced yesterday that the startup has implanted a brain chip into a human subject for the first time. Revealing the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter)‚ Musk gave little detail but did say that the recipient is “recovering well”."Initial results show promising neuron spike detection‚" Musk wrote on the social media platform that he purchased in 2022. In this context‚ spikes are peaks of electrical activity generated by neurons‚ although it’s unclear at this stage exactly how successful the procedure has been or what outcome the patient might be able to expect.Neuralink is developing a brain-computer interface implant with the goal of allowing humans to control devices using only their minds. Ostensibly‚ the company’s intention is to help people suffering from paralysis to operate equipment that would allow them to communicate and move around more easily.  IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites. However‚ the prospect of such a technology also opens up possibilities for more outlandish uses‚ such as brain-to-brain communication‚ thought-hacking‚ and the ability to live forever by downloading old brains into young bodies. These whimsical applications are still a long way off‚ although the start of Neuralink’s first human trial is sure to set imaginations running wild.Approval for the so-called PRIME Study was granted last year by the US Food and Drug Administration. According to Neuralink‚ the trial involves the use of a robot to surgically connect the implant’s ultra-fine threads to participants’ motor cortices. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the safety of the procedure‚ and the announcement comes shortly after the company was fined for violating the rules that govern the transport of hazardous materials. During inspections of Neuralink’s facilities early last year‚ officials from the Department of Transportation found that certain dangerous chemicals had been improperly packaged.Neuralink has also been continually dogged by accusations of animal cruelty during its earlier experiments on macaques. According to complaints raised by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM)‚ several monkeys were severely harmed by the device‚ with some going on to suffer from infections‚ brain swelling‚ paralysis‚ seizures‚ and depression. The accusations‚ which were sent to the Securities and Exchange Commission‚ state that numerous monkeys were euthanized as a direct result of the damage caused by the brain chip. In response‚ Musk has publicly stated that no animals have ever died due to a Neuralink implant.

Wildest scientific theories that try to explain the Universe

As much as we would like to think that science has unraveled most of the mysteries of the universe‚ in fact we still only have a tiny fraction of the knowledge. And every now and then a new theory comes along that completely changes our understanding of everything we thought we knew‚ and sets us on a new path that may hold the key to all the questions that still remain unanswered. None of the hypotheses presented below have been conclusively confirmed‚ however‚ they have not been completely refuted either. The Ecpyrotic Universe Theory – Instead of the Big Bang Theory This theory is an alternative to the widely accepted Big Bang theory‚ which holds that the universe arose from a singularity. The theory of the Ecpyrotic Universe says that our Universe was formed as a result of the collision of two others. It is believed that this collision had the effect of “resetting” our universe‚ and after that it began to expand‚ as in the Big Bang theory. However‚ instead of expanding indefinitely‚ the theory posits that the universe will one day begin to contract‚ inevitably leading to what some astrophysicists call the Big Crunch. Then all the momentum and energy involved in the Big Crunch creates another monumental collision‚ causing the Universe to reset again so that the cycle can repeat itself forever. White holes or black ones? Everyone knows about black holes and how their enormous gravitational field sucks in everything around them‚ including light. But what about white holes? Theoretically‚ they are the exact opposite of black holes and instead of sucking in matter‚ they eject it. However‚ scientists have never observed any white holes‚ so it is unclear how they might function: as the opposite end of a black hole‚ a wormhole gate‚ or something else. If the white hole actually ejected matter that was consumed by the black hole‚ that matter would have to somehow bypass the singularity. Currently‚ we don’t really know what happens to matter that falls into a black hole. The fact is that all the black holes that we have observed have an event horizon‚ which prevents us from making direct observations. So if we ever hope to prove the existence of white holes in the future‚ we may have to rethink our understanding of the laws of physics. The Fermi Paradox and the Great Silence First proposed by physicists Enrico Fermi and Michael H. Hart‚ the Fermi Paradox states that if the Drake equation is true‚ and there really are millions of intelligent life forms in the Milky Way‚ then it is logical to assume that we should notice some kind of signal from at least one of them to date. This argument is called the Great Silence. Over the years‚ several interesting theories have been proposed to explain this Great Silence‚ among them perhaps the most interesting and fantastic one suggests that we are all living inside a computer simulation similar to the Matrix. Simulation theory This theory suggests that we could all be living in a computer simulation created by an alien race in a distant galaxy. There is a whole pool of theoretical physicists who not only believe the Simulation Theory is possible‚ but are also working on experiments to prove it. In particular‚ a group of German physicists is trying to create their own simulation of our Universe. Black holes can produce new universes With their mysterious nature and dark ability to absorb light‚ it’s no wonder that black holes are often seen as the dark horses of the universe. But this theory suggests that a black hole may actually be the mother of our universe. The idea is that when matter falls into a black hole‚ intense gravity compresses it into a single point so dense that it is thrown back out and forms an entirely new universe from the same matter. Thus‚ one could say that a Universe with a large number of black holes is essentially a kindergarten for infant universes. Some scientists believe that we cannot see beyond the event horizon of black holes because we are the product of a black hole from another universe. Oddly enough‚ this concept fits with theories that suggest the existence of a multiverse. Multiverse – Many Worlds Theory Speaking of the multiverse‚ the many worlds theory has a slightly different explanation for the existence of countless other universes. Using quantum mechanics‚ it confirms the objective reality of space‚ but suggests that matter cannot be compressed into a singularity. So instead of new universes spontaneously arising from black holes‚ the many worlds theory suggests that every time we make a decision‚ a new universe is born. So‚ every time you have to make a choice‚ be it coffee or tea‚ debit or credit‚ you are essentially creating a new Universe where you have made the opposite choice. Every decision you make has an impact exactly until the minute it’s time for you to make your next decision‚ after which another Universe appears. If this actually happens‚ then it means that there are an infinite number of Universes for every decision that every person has ever made. Heat Death of the Universe This theory follows from the second law of thermodynamics and suggests that if the universe is infinite‚ then it must be infinitely old. In an infinitely old universe‚ heat death suggests that eventually the entire universe will reach a uniform temperature‚ after which it will remain stationary. And most likely dead. However‚ this idea would only make sense if the rate of expansion of the Universe always remained constant. An aspect that contradicts other phenomena such as cosmic inflation. Singularity Ray Kurzweil is a renowned futurist who believes with full confidence that in the coming decades humanity will experience what he calls a technological singularity‚ during which we will learn to bypass the rules set by nature itself‚ including even death. Kurzweil believes that truly intelligent civilizations (which he includes humanity) are doomed to develop into super-intelligent‚ possibly biomechanical beings whose computing abilities grow exponentially. The idea is that by reaching the so-called “singularity”‚ our technology will be so advanced that we will make revolutionary discoveries almost daily. We will be able to harness the energy of our own Sun to achieve amazing interstellar travel that previously only existed in science fiction. In this world‚ things like cyborgs‚ Dyson spheres‚ and teleportation devices are not only possible‚ but virtually inevitable. Neuralink successfully implanted a brain chip in a human

Neuralink founder Elon Musk on Monday announced a breakthrough in neurotechnology: the brain chip startup has successfully implanted a neural interface in a human for the first time. The man who received the implant on Sunday is recovering‚ according to Musk’s post on social media X. Of interest are initial results that show promise in the detection of neural spiking. Implanting a brain chip could lead to major breakthroughs in brain-machine interfaces. Neuralink’s achievement is part of PRIME’s ongoing research to evaluate the safety and functionality of wireless brain-computer interfaces. The first human received an implant from @Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well. Initial results show promising neuron spike detection. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 29‚ 2024 According to the scientists‚ the interface will allow you to control devices using your thoughts‚ which is of great importance for people with quadriplegia (a condition in which both arms and legs are paralyzed). However‚ additional details about the study have not yet been disclosed. Elon Musk also revealed the name of Neuralink’s first product – Telepathy. It is assumed that this product will be able to control phones or computers with the power of thought. Enables control of your phone or computer‚ and through them almost any device‚ just by thinking. Initial users will be those who have lost the use of their limbs. Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 30‚ 2024 The first users of Telepathy will be people who have lost the use of their limbs‚ which could be a significant step towards making their daily lives easier. “Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a typist or an auctioneer. This is the goal‚” Musk writes. Musk’s previous allegations over Neuralink’s activities have called into question the company’s legitimacy‚ but regardless‚ the successful implantation of a human brain chip marks a turning point in the quest to enhance human capabilities through advanced neural interfaces. At the same time‚ questions are being raised about the potential regulatory challenges the company may face as it navigates the intersection of advanced technologies and security protocols.
