Concrete that powers cities? Scientists turn ancient material into giant batteries

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM Concrete is one of civilization’s oldest building blocks as well as one of its most ubiquitous. From bridges and buildings to sidewalks and stadiums, it forms the backbone of modern life. Now, researchers are reimagining this ancient material not just as structural support, but as a potential solution to one of our biggest climate challenges: energy storage. A team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has created a new form of concrete that functions like a battery. Published in the journal PNAS, the study reveals how a blend of cement, water, ultra-fine carbon black, and electrolytes can form an “electron-conducting carbon concrete,” or ec3. This innovative mixture builds a conductive nanonetwork within the concrete itself, allowing it to store and release electricity. Why concrete, why now? Concrete innovation isn’t new. Recent breakthroughs have produced self-healing concrete, carbon-sequestering concrete, and even concrete designed to boost crop yields. But ec3 represents a leap beyond durability or emissions and straight into multifunctionality. “The Ancient Romans made great advances in concrete construction. Massive structures like the Pantheon stand to this day without reinforcement,” said MIT materials scientist Admir Masic. “If we keep up their spirit of combining material science with architectural vision, we could be at the brink of a new architectural revolution with multifunctional concretes like ec3.” A miniature arch, a big idea To test their theory, researchers built a small arch from ec3. It powered an LED light with nine volts of electricity while holding its own structural weight. The light dimmed and flickered under stress, indicating that the material could one day double as a diagnostic tool for infrastructure health. “We may be able to use this as a signal of when and to what extent a structure is stressed, or monitor its overall health in real time,” Masic explained. In other words, concrete could soon not only support buildings but also warn us when they need repair. The green energy angle The most promising application for this breakthrough is renewable energy storage. As solar and wind power production increases, storing that energy efficiently has become an urgent challenge. That’s where ec3 comes in. Because concrete is so prevalent across cities, homes, and highways, incorporating battery technology into infrastructure could help reduce pressure on the power grid and increase energy resilience. “What excites us most is that we’ve taken a material as ancient as concrete and shown that it can do something entirely new,” said James Weaver, co-author of the study. “By combining modern nanoscience with an ancient building block of civilization, we’re opening a door to infrastructure that doesn’t just support our lives, it powers them.” Where this could lead This battery concrete isn’t ready for mass deployment just yet. The team is still refining the material’s performance, scalability, and energy density. But the potential is enormous. Buildings, roads, and bridges could someday become energy storage devices, playing a role in reducing emissions and creating more resilient, self-powered infrastructure. While the Romans couldn’t have imagined concrete that flickers under pressure or powers an LED, they likely would have appreciated its ingenuity. Just as their concrete helped structures stand the test of time, ec3 could help modern infrastructure rise to meet the climate challenges of the future. How to help your dog live longer: 6 vet-approved tips for a healthy, happy life

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM If you’ve ever wished your dog could live forever, you’re not alone. And while immortality isn’t on the table, science is uncovering simple, practical steps we can take to give our pups a longer, healthier life. Researchers at the Dog Aging Project, a nationwide study exploring the science of canine longevity, have been digging into the behaviors and lifestyle factors that influence your dog’s lifespan. Their findings are refreshingly doable. As veterinary epidemiologist Audrey Ruple of Virginia Tech explains, “As humans have become individually bonded to their dogs, we’re thinking about their lifespan in the same way we think about our own.” Here’s what the experts recommend. Exercise daily and stay consistent One of the most powerful things you can do? Move more. “The body of evidence overwhelmingly shows that physical activity is linked to better cognitive health, and fewer medical diagnoses,” says Kate Creevy, a professor at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Dog Aging Project researcher. Exercise lowers obesity rates, which is a major risk factor for diabetes, osteoarthritis, incontinence, and breathing issues. But consistency matters. Dogs that lie around all week and go full speed on the weekends are at risk of injury. “Just like people, that kind of intermittent extreme activity is more likely to cause injuries,” Creevy says. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention recommends 30 minutes of aerobic activity daily, but needs vary. Herding and sporting breeds may need more, while others are fine with shorter walks. And you don’t have to overthink it. “The best exercise is the one you and your dog will do,” says Creevy. Encourage canine companionship Social dogs tend to be healthier dogs. According to a 2023 study, pups with more human and animal companions had fewer diagnoses of arthritis, allergies, and digestive issues. “Dogs are a social species, just like people,” says Creevy. Social interactions, whether with people or fellow pets, stimulate dogs mentally and may protect against age-related cognitive decline. In fact, enriched environments with toys, games, and playtime have been linked to sharper brains in older dogs. Make time for games, outings, and safe dog-to-dog interactions. “If you do these kinds of things throughout their life, you might be able to postpone cognitive decline,” Creevy adds. Consider spaying or neutering Spaying or neutering your pet is associated with a longer life. For females, spaying reduces the risk of mammary cancer and eliminates uterine or ovarian cancer. For males, it prevents testicular cancer and may lower the risk of prostate problems. Neutered pets are also less likely to run off searching for a mate or act aggressively, lowering the chances of trauma from fights or car accidents. While many shelter animals are already fixed, talk to your vet about the best timing for your breed. Choose food based on science, not fads Trendy diets for pets abound, but they’re not always safe. Raw food can carry dangerous bacteria like salmonella, and home-cooked meals often miss key nutrients. Even too many table scraps can cause serious problems like pancreatitis. Overfeeding is one of the most common and preventable causes of poor health in dogs. “It becomes a vicious cycle,” says Creevy. Obesity can lead to joint problems, liver and kidney issues, and a decline in activity. Dogs with lean body mass tend to live longer, sometimes by more than two years. Ruple notes, “That’s something we see across all breeds, weights, and life stages.” Stick with pet foods that meet nutritional standards set by Association of American Feed Control Officials (look for a statement on the label). “Keep it simple,” advises Erik Olstad, assistant professor of primary care at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Make regular vet visits a habit Annual wellness visits are essential for catching issues early and extending your dog’s health span. A 2023 study found that dogs regularly examined by a vet were 30 percent less likely to develop chronic illnesses. Vaccinated dogs had 40 percent fewer contagious diseases, and those on flea, tick, and worm meds had 35 percent fewer parasitic infections. Ideally, your dog should visit the vet once a year—and twice a year once they hit their senior years. Don’t skip the dental care Oral health is more important than many pet parents realize. Dental disease can lead to serious infections and worsen existing conditions like heart disease. “It’s like putting gasoline on a fire that’s already present,” Olstad says. Daily brushing is best, but even a few quick swipes a few times a week make a big difference. “It is not a heavy lift compared to how we have to brush our own teeth,” Creevy notes. The ultimate goal isn’t just a longer life, it’s a longer, healthier life. As Olstad puts it, “An animal can live to 20, but if those last three years are hell for that dog? That’s not what we’re looking for.”The post How to help your dog live longer: 6 vet-approved tips for a healthy, happy life first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

CNN’s Shutdown ‘Town Hall’ Was Mostly An Infomercial for Socialism

CNN’s much-hyped Shutdown America town hall was, by and large, little more than an extended infomercial for socialism in America, with Kaitlan Collins acting mostly as a facilitator. Little was achieved by this exercise except to showcase the maximalist demands of guests Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders in exchange for an end to the ongoing government shutdown. The question mix was pretty interesting: of the 14 audience questions we counted, five were considered to have come from a right-leaning perspective, six were neutral, and only three were from the left.  The first question is on hardship assistance for furloughed government employees. AOC’s response was to both call for opening the government AND for negotiations, which would likely keep it closed: First question for AOC is on hardships for federal employees: AOC simultaneously calls both for opening the government RIGHT NOW, and for negotiations. pic.twitter.com/V0KpGNvaGN — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 16, 2025 A Trump-voting Democrat then asks Bernie how Democrats justify fighting over subsidies as opposed to the current hardships suffered by federal workers. Bernie’s response: class warfare. Second question: Trump-voting Maryland Dem asks Bernie how he justifies "choosing a fight over subsidies that might help people in the future over workers who are definitely suffering today." Bernie pivots to class warfare. AOC refuses to accept a compromise proposal of a… pic.twitter.com/JSxn6PlM6x — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 16, 2025 After a College Republican asked Bernie which Republicans he could work with to get to a continuing resolution, AOC is asked for her suggestion on what government workers should do for food when the funds stop flowing. AOC’s response was to defame Speaker Mike Johnson. ATC from MS asks, "what do you suggest government workers do for food money when the checks stop coming?" AOC responds with more shutdown gaslighting, smears Speaker Johnson with false quote "we want to make this the longest shutdown." Collins confronts AOC with Schumer's "every… pic.twitter.com/bKpKMoa1Zs — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 16, 2025 A Democrat student from George Washington University asks why the GOP is so much more effective on social media. Bernie claims the GOP controls the platforms, AOC goes off into a weird rant about masculinity. Dem GWU student: Why is the GOP so much more effective on social media? Bernie: GOP OWNS SOCIAL MEDIA! SOCIALISM! AOC: Authenticity, toxic masculinity, white supremacy so Elon, Zuck, Thiel get tax cuts AOC will impose censorship first chance she gets pic.twitter.com/OMlc4t5D0F — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 16, 2025 A Democrat bartender from Mississippi asks what the guests are doing to end the stalemate. Each goes to what is likely some form of their joint stump speech. Collins confronts AOC on her past statements regarding shutdowns as “hostage-taking”: Democrat bartender from Mississippi asks Bernie and AOC what they are doing to end the stalemate. Bernie goes back to healthcare hysterics. AOC is incensed that Republicans are not complying with Democrats' "hostage-taking." pic.twitter.com/zywvQRdthI — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 16, 2025 Grover Norquist is made proud as one of his interns asks Bernie a question on how the shutdown reflects on Chuck Schumer’s leadership. Bernie tries to throw the question back at the young man, only to get COOKED: Rohan Naval, AU student and @taxreformer intern: "How do you think this shutdown reflects on Chuck Schumer's leadership?" Bernie tries to flip the question back to Naval and gets SHUT DOWN pic.twitter.com/VuXToWTa0v — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 16, 2025 Collins follows up with a Senate primary question for AOC: Kaitlan Collins asks AOC the inevitable Senate primary question. AOC hystrionically brushes the question off, Bernie yells at clouds. pic.twitter.com/guSy9Qf7Zl — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 16, 2025 Should taxpayers pay for healthcare for illegals? AOC dodges by advocating for single-payer as Bernie rants about billionaires.  AOC gets the question on whether taxpayers should pay for healthcare for illegal aliens, dodges the question by advocating for single-payer. Bernie goes back to yelling about the billionaires pic.twitter.com/e8OxmkUyzE — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 16, 2025 AOC reluctantly credits Trump for the release of hostages in Gaza. AOC reluctantly gives President Trump credit for the hostage release in Gaza, calls him an "obstacle to peace." Good on Collins for sticking to the question. pic.twitter.com/K0mBG3MU3d — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 16, 2025 Bernie praises Zohran Mamdani, calls for that to take place in all 50 states.  Bernie lavishes praise on Zohran Mamdani: "WHAT IS NOT TO LIKE?... I would like to see that take place in 50 states in this country." pic.twitter.com/ytlGcGxg7Z — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 16, 2025 One imagines that this town hall is similar to the socialism events that Bernie and AOC do throughout the country. As a nation continues to face down the barrel of a shutdown, the people are needing leadership. Instead, and with a big assist from CNN, it is our sense that the people got the former.
