Left’s Litigators, Federal Union Launch New Alliance to Protect ‘Deep State’

Left-leaning organizations launched a partnership to provide legal support and advice to “deep state” employees ousted during President Donald Trump’s second term.   The new initiative, called the You Are Not Alone Project, is comprised of three organizations: Democracy Forward’s Civil Service Strong, the American Federation of Government Employees, and the Partnership for Public Service.  The pilot program, launched in July for State Department employees, has since expanded across federal agencies. The pilot program included helping ousted bureaucrats access free legal representation through Rise Up, also known as the Federal Workers Legal Defense Network, which is another coalition of left-leaning groups that includes the three member organizations of You Are Not Alone. The pilot also gave former bureaucrats instructions for making appeals to the Merit Systems Protection Board and for filing complaints through the Office of Special Counsel. Democracy Forward, a litigation and advocacy group, is chaired by veteran Democrat election lawyer Marc Elias, known for pushing the Russia-Donald Trump collusion conspiracy theory while working for the Hillary Clinton 2016 campaign.  Rob Shriver, the managing director of the Civil Service Strong program at Democracy Forward, is a former acting director of the federal Office of Personnel Management under President Joe Biden.  “Federal employees serve our nation with dedication and integrity. As we litigate multiple cases where the workforce has been unlawfully targeted, we want to make sure that people know they are not alone as they face the threat of job loss,” said Shriver in a public statement. “The You Are Not Alone Project is about more than resources—it’s about solidarity, dignity, and ensuring public servants have the tools they need to protect their rights and move forward.” An article in The Atlantic on Tuesday referred to Democracy Forward as the “single largest source of Trump’s legal troubles.” The American Federation of Government Employees is the nation’s largest federal employee union, which has a political action committee that contributes heavily to Democrat political candidates. In the 2024 election cycle, the union’s political action committee made 95.4% of its donations to Democrat candidates, according to Open Secrets. The Partnership for Public Service is somewhat of an outlier in that trio. The organization has often steered clear of advocacy and has publicly focused on government efficiency and even accountability through governmental procedures. Though during Trump’s second term, the organization has been critical of the administration for cutting the size of the federal workforce.  The three groups only announced the You Are Not Alone Project for all federal agencies late last week. However, the alliance established the pilot program in July for former State Department employees after the department issued layoff notices to more than 1,300 people as part of a Trump administration reorganization. The reorganization is expected to result in about 3,000 total departures when those leaving voluntarily are also included, according to the American Federation of Government Employees. A union spokesperson referred The Daily Signal to a news release explaining the pilot program. The Partnership for Public Service referred questions on legal matters to Democracy Forward. A Democracy Forward spokesperson did not reply to inquiries from The Daily Signal.  Although he opposes the unionization of federal employees, such partnerships would be a legitimate union function, said Michael Watson, research director at the Capital Research Center, an investigative think tank that monitors nonprofits. “While I stand by my long-standing view that government worker unions should not exist … as announced, the plan seems like the sort of thing labor unions, if they are going to exist, should do,” Watson told The Daily Signal. “Obviously, it is more partisan-political than that, as the Elias ties indicate, but providing support to members affected by layoffs is not the worst thing labor unions do.” He added that he is not “hugely surprised” by the Partnership for Public Service joining the coalition.  “It is obviously aligned with progressives,” Watson said. “While it’s not as openly partisan as Mr. Elias or as functionally partisan as the union, it sees itself as defending public servants.” “Our union won’t stand by while these patriotic citizens are cast aside,” American Federation of Government Employees President Everett Kelley said in a public statement. The federal employees need support now more than ever, said Jenny Mattingley, vice president for government affairs at the Partnership for Public Service. “It’s important that federal employees have trusted places to go for accurate, plain-language resources to help them navigate this time of stress and uncertainty.” The post Left’s Litigators, Federal Union Launch New Alliance to Protect ‘Deep State’ appeared first on The Daily Signal.

14,000 Migrants Have Turned Back, Headed South Amid News of Closed Border, Report Estimates

In a trend known as “reverse flow,” about 14,000 migrants, who had sought to reach the U.S. border, have turned around since the start of the Trump administration, according to an estimate in a recent report.   A large percent of the migrants who have turned back are from Venezuela, according to the report from the governments of Colombia, Panama, and Costa Rica. The Trump administration has acted to end Temporary Protected Status for the hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans who entered the U.S. under the Biden administration. The Supreme Court ruled in May that the administration could deport illegal aliens while litigation continued to move through the courts over ending the Biden administration program.   The threat of removal, or denial of entry at the border, appears to have created the “reverse flow” trend.   The report, which was published with support from the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, found that northward migration has fallen by 97% in 2025.   Migration through the Darién Gap—a 60-mile stretch of dense rain forest that connects Panama and Colombia—spiked under President Joe Biden. About 1.5 million migrants from 170 countries passed through the Darién Gap from 2021 to mid-2024, according to estimates by the Center for Immigration Studies. Now, migration through the Darién Gap is nearly nonexistent, according to the report.   A migrant’s journey north to the U.S. southern border from Venezuela is extremely dangerous. In addition to the risks of traversing through the Darién Gap, women face a high risk of sexual exploitation at the hands of the criminal cartel members or other criminals. Injury often results in being left behind, which can mean death if abandoned in the desert or jungle.   The flow of migrants traveling to the U.S. southern border from countries across the globe has seen a dramatic decline since President Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office.   Fewer than 150 illegal aliens arrived between ports of entry at the southern border in July, down from a daily average of over 5,800 in July 2022, according to Customs and Border Protection. The Trump administration has also stopped paroling illegal aliens into the U.S., touting that, for several months now, not a single migrant to arrive at the border has been voluntarily allowed to remain in the U.S.   About half the 14,000 migrants returning south plan to go back to Venezuela, while one-fourth plan to settle in Colombia, and the remaining migrants are traveling to other South American countries, according to the report. There has been a mass exodus from Venezuela following dictator Nicolas Maduro’s rise to power in the South American nation.  The Associated Press contributed to this report.  The post 14,000 Migrants Have Turned Back, Headed South Amid News of Closed Border, Report Estimates appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Trump Doesn’t Need to Stage a Coup in Iran, Just Give It Time

Editor’s note: This is a lightly edited transcript of today’s video from Daily Signal Senior Contributor Victor Davis Hanson. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to see more of his videos. Hello, this is Victor Davis Hanson for The Daily Signal. There is going to be an eruption in Iran, I think, maybe within a year or two. We hear stories that the revolutionary Islamic government has already executed almost a thousand of its own citizens. It’s in a state of paranoia. Why? Because it has no air defenses, No. 1. Israel showed the world that Iran was a paper tiger. It has dismantled its terrorist surrogates, just wiped out the Houthis command and control in Yemen, it’s embarrassed Hezbollah, there is no real Hamas organized resistance, and Iran has no defenses. The United States then took out its nuclear proliferation apparatus, at least for a number of years. More importantly, the theocracy has no popular support, it seems like. It has a core base of followers who have been enriched by this corrupt government, but the people themselves, under sanctioning and embargoes of the only real thing that Iran can export, oil, have been hard-pressed. Electricity is sporadic. Water and sewage have been interrupted. The Iranian currency is inflated. But more importantly, the Iranian government knows that there is popular dissent, and some of that popular dissent has been manifested by allowing the Israelis to get the necessary intelligence to knock off the key people in the Iranian nuclear program. I don’t think any scientist in Iran would want to be openly affiliated with nuclear physics, given the short lifespan of all those who, in the past, worked central to the Iranian nuclear bomb project. And the same thing is true of their general staff. A lot of generals have been killed. And the question is: If you were a high-ranking officer in the Iranian military, in the Hezbollah hierarchy, in what’s left of the Yemeni command and control, would you want it to be known? Because if you did, your days would be numbered. And so, this government is under economic, social, political, cultural, and military pressures, and most of their problems originated with their aggression toward Israel, that could take only so much and decided to solve the problem by destroying its surrogates and attacking the head of the octopus, and the United States under President Donald Trump, ending the nuclear threat for the near future. So, what has happened in the Middle East is that the Obama idea that Iran should be a counterweight to our friends, democratic Israel and the moderate Gulf states and Middle East countries, like Egypt and Jordan—there was going to be a counterweight. It was going to be—I guess we would call it the Shia axis. It was going to be in Iran, the Assad dynasty in Syria, the Lebanese-Hezbollah takeover of that country, and pro-Iranian groups in Yemen and the West Bank and Gaza. And this then would create tension, and the Obama administration and its successive Biden administrations would then come in and adjudicate, not favoring the Shia Crescent, not favoring Israel and the moderate Arab regimes. And therefore, we would get social justice for the—I don’t know—underrepresented, oppressed Shia or the Persians, but we wouldn’t openly side with a democratic, liberal society, like Israel, and reforming societies in the Middle East that are at least not as extreme as Iran or Afghanistan or some other more lunatic countries. That is in shambles now. That whole notion is in shambles. As I said, Iran is near destitute, and it’s on the brink of internal revolution. There is no more Assad dynasty in Syria. It’s in turmoil. The Lebanese government is no longer deathly afraid of Hezbollah and incrementally trying to reassert control. The Yemenis are flabbergasted that their entire terrorist command and control has been wiped out. And so, we’re on the verge of some great developments in the Middle East, if we can just stay supportive of the moderate Arab regimes and Israel and let these natural processes play out and keep the sanctions on Iran, keep the embargo on Iran, and don’t let up until there’s a change of government. We don’t have to be the instigators. We don’t have to stage coups. All we have to do is turn up the heat and let this pot boil over. And boil over it will. We publish a variety of perspectives. Nothing written here is to be construed as representing the views of The Daily Signal. The post Trump Doesn’t Need to Stage a Coup in Iran, Just Give It Time appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Google Props Up Dem Critique of Crucial Funding Markup Hearing—Could Implicate NPR/PBS Funding

Google propped up an attack on the upcoming subcommittee hearing that will debate whether Congress should covertly re-fund leftist outlets NPR and PBS.  On Tuesday, the House appropriations subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies is doing a markup of a Fiscal Year 2026 spending bill. But when MRC researchers searched Google for the title of the hearing, the search giant elevated Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro’s (D-CT) negative press release about the hearing titled “House Republicans Continue Assault on Public Education and Research into Lifesaving Cures.” This was the first opinion-based link Google included and was included among the search engine’s “Top Stories.” As the House Appropriations subcommittees meet to discuss, markup and amend Fiscal Year 2026 spending bills, adding in funding for the previously defunded leftist outlets NPR and PBS is on the table. Google, like many of the legacy media’s allies, has seemed to support NPR and PBS funding when MRC has conducted past searches on the topic.  For example, MRC researchers searched the words “trump rescission” in June, the day the Trump administration sent a $9.4 billion rescissions package to Congress that would cut funds to PBS and NPR. Not one of the 14 links the search giant provided led to a right-leaning media outlet or organization.  When asked in March, “Are NPR and PBS biased?” Google’s Gemini simply concluded that whether NPR and PBS are biased “is a subject of ongoing debate” and that “they aim for objectivity” without citing any sources. When prompted to “double check response,” the chatbot proceeded to list sources supporting its points, the majority of which came from PBS. Methodology: On September 2, 2025 MRC researchers searched Google Search for the terms “Subcommittee Markup of Fiscal Year 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Bill.” Researchers then analyzed the results for apparent bias.  Conservatives are under attack. Contact your representatives and demand that Google be held to account to mirror the First Amendment while providing transparency and an equal footing for conservatives.
