Paul McCartney’s opinion on Guns N’ Roses

No band impacted Rock and Roll more than The Beatles and Paul McCartney was a crucial part of that success also being an inspiration for musicians across the decades. His songwriting, especially alongside the late John Lennon, changed the course of music by pushing boundaries and revealing the incredible possibilities bands had when creating songs. During his career, McCartney was always interested in hearing new artists, which gave him the chance to witness many incredible bands emerge up close. He spoke about several of those groups, including Guns N’ Roses, originally formed by Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, Slash, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler. What is Paul McCartney's opinion on Guns N' Roses Paul McCartney has always taken an interest in new bands that emerged after the ’60s, and he is a fan of Guns N’ Roses. He was even spotted watching and enjoying their show at the side of the stage at Glastonbury Festival in 2023. He had already praised them in the 90s, when the group covered his James Bond theme song "Live and Let Die". "It’s funny, because when their version came out, my kids were in school. They had a lot of defending to do, because all the kids said, 'Great song, ‘Live and Let Die!’ They said, 'My dad did that!' 'No way, it’s Guns N’ Roses!' I was happy they did it. I thought it was a nice little nod. I’m glad to hear our pyro is bigger and better," he said in an interview with New York Times in 2016. Originally released by McCartney in 1973 for the 007 movie of the same name, Guns N’ Roses’ version came out in 1991 on their "Use Your Illusion I" album. Since then, it has been featured in almost all of the Hard Rock band’s concerts over the years. According to Setlist.fm, they have performed the track live more than 800 times. Paul McCartney said the song was reborn after they covered it Curiously, Axl Rose had the chance to meet McCartney before they covered "Live and Let Die". The Beatles member recalled that encounter in an interview with Club Sandwich in 1995. "We did a small gig in New York at the start of the 1989-90 World Tour. Just as a tryout, to get the feel of an audience again, and Axl Rose was backstage." "He said to me, 'I really like your slow songs. I really like ‘The Long And Winding Road', which I was surprised at. And then, off his own bat, he went and did a great version of ‘Live And Let Die’. The song was re-born with their version. School friends of my kids were saying, “Have you heard the new Guns N’ Roses song? It’s great, very cool' and my daughter would be trying to say, 'My Dad wrote that'. But they would reply, 'Get out of it!'" Paul McCartney said. The Beatle said a couple of times that he was amazed that they covered the song and likes when people do that. Guns N' Roses performed the song at Glastonbury in 2023 when Paul McCartney was watching their show at the side of the stage. Axl said they covered McCartney because a critic said it wasn't one of the best 007 songs According to Axl Rose, a music critic in Los Angeles said that “Live and Let Die” was not good. That gave him the idea to cover the track, as it meant he would have to listen to it for a few more years. "Yeah, I grew up on it, you know, and appreciated it. But one of the main reasons we did Live and Let Die... There’s a few reasons. One, because a critic in L.A. was bagging on all the James Bond songs. (He was saying) how they were all great, but Live and Let Die was a terrible song. And so we kinda decided that maybe he needed to hear that for another five years (chuckles)." He continued: "You know, we knew that if we did it, we did it well, this person would have to hear it. Another reason was that it was something to shoot for, you know, in quality. Also, you know, if we could show that we could do that kind of song, it would, like, show the quality in the rest of our songs. Another thing is like, you know, it was kind of –not much, but a little bit of a hard pill to swallow- that we consider Welcome to the Jungle 2 is Live and Let Die, and it’s somebody (else) that wrote it not us," he said in an interview with Rockline in 1991. Axl has already listed Paul McCartney as one of the greatest singers of all time. Besides his work with The Beatles, the Guns N' Roses vocalist also liked his solo era with The Wings, especially. When the guitarist Denny Laine passed away in 2023 at the age of 73, the musician posted a special message. He said: “Very sorry to hear of the passing of Denny Laine. Wings has always (on the daily) been a big part of my life. RIP." Duff McKagan was starstruck when Paul McCartney called him by name https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9PQX6s12FN4 Having the chance to meet Paul McCartney is already incredible. But having him standing at the side of the stage watching you perform and then hearing him call you by name is truly a dream come true. That is exactly what happened to Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan. "Paul McCartney, you know, we (Velvet Revolver) played (at the) Live 8 here in London. You got three songs (to play), you got to hit your nut really quick in front of all those people. (There's) no time to warm up, everybody was playing on, so there's a lot going on backstage. The Who is there, Madonna is over here, Pink Floyd is going to finally play." "We hit the stage and up on stage there's Paul McCartney. He looks at me and he goes 'Hey Duff!'. You got to hit your nut, you got to be comfortable. (But) all I can think off is like 'Paul McCartney knows my name! How the hell did that happen?" "But yeah, I really have been able to meet my heroes. It's been a pleasure to find out that those guys who are still around, they worked hard and they're good guys. I've met some really good guys," Duff McKagan told Beneath the Bassline in 2024 (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage). The post Paul McCartney’s opinion on Guns N’ Roses appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Resurfaced clip of 3-year-old girl explaining 'self love' in less than a minute is pure joy

There are times that age has nothing to do with wisdom. In fact, sometimes the pureness of youth can help us grasp ideas many of us spend a lifetime wrestling to understand. A video of a three-year-old girl being interviewed by her father has resurfaced recently on social media. In 50 seconds flat, she sums up the importance of self-love so beautifully and simply and is bringing true joy to many who watch.Conor T. Murphy has occasional chats with his daughter Ty, who just turned six last week. On one occasion, he asked her point blank, "When do you feel loved?" She thinks for a split second and answers, "When someone hugs me and when I'm not lonely." He repeats these words back to her and she adds, "And when I hug myself." @conortmurphy Self love advice from Dr. Ty He asks, "Do you think it's important to hug yourself? Why?" She answers without blinking, "Just because I'm a doctor." He affirms that she is, indeed, a doctor, and questions, "So because you're a doctor, you know that hugging yourself is helpful?" She adds, "It makes me feel relaxed."He follows up, "Can you show me how you hug yourself?" Ty proceeds to give herself a huge bear hug, while smiling. "That's what we call self-love," Conor tells her. "And it's important, right?" She agrees emphatically. "Yeah, we have to love ourselves." He wraps it up by saying, "I think that's two very important lessons. We have to love ourselves—and everyone poops."(The last line was not apropos of nothing. He is referring to a segment earlier in their conversation, wherein he brought up the topic of going to the bathroom. She adorably exclaims she is not afraid to poop!) @conortmurphy Everybody poops. “We really need to talk abut this” ?? The comments were so truly wholesome. On TikTok, a person referenced Ty's "medical career," and asked, "Can she give me prescriptions for hugs, please?"Another noted that Conor seems like a truly wonderful father, writing, "Dude, she's amazing. Good job Dad, you're doing a darn good job."Just a few days ago, Conor posted a photo of himself with Ty on Instagram, celebrating her birthday. He writes, "One of my favorite things to do is answer people when they ask how my daughter is. If you have met her before, you understand why this brings me so much joy to answer this truthfully and wholeheartedly. Happy Birthday, Ty. 6 years old today. Seems like she was a 1 year old yesterday." See on Instagram Again, the comments show love for both Ty and Conor. One writes, "Happy Birthday Sweet Ty! You are genuinely one of my favorite people whom I’ve never met."Experts have discussed the importance of self-love over the centuries. Psychologist Sharon Martin, DSW, LCSW explains in a piece for Psychology Today, "Self-love entails accepting yourself wholeheartedly, treating yourself with kindness and respect, and prioritizing your physical and emotional health. It goes beyond mere actions and extends to your thoughts and feelings about yourself."She illustrates helpful ways that one can practice self-love. Among many, one that stood out is the idea of "celebrating your achievements." We forget sometimes how far we've come. Martin reminds us, "Acknowledging and celebrating your accomplishments, no matter how big or small. For example, treat yourself to something you enjoy, reflect on your growth, or share your successes with trusted friends or loved ones."Sabrina Romanoff, PsyD, a clinical psychologist and professor at Yeshiva University, is quoted in an article for Verywell Mind noting that the love that we give ourselves will help the love that we have for others feel secure and healthy: "It’s important to have self-worth because it impacts everything you do from your relationships, to how you work, how you feel about yourself, and how others view you." Conor T Murphy and his daughter Ty discuss important matters. www.youtube.com, Bignight Media If at such a young age Ty has this much figured out, imagine what wisdom she'll impart as she continues to grow!

News anchor shows the stunning difference between her TV voice and natural Philly accent

The heyday of the TV news anchor might be over (sorry, Ron Burgundy), but many of us still remember the soothing tones of Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, and Diane Sawyer floating through our living rooms growing up. Their voices were commanding and authoritative, yet friendly. They were deep and satisfying, and somehow without any trace of accent or regionalism. Just pure professionalism. The best in the business make the voice sound so natural that it's easy to forget that "news anchor voice" is a skill that young journalists must learn and practice religiously. That said, sometimes reporters' real-life speaking voices can be drastically different.Amanda Lee, a TV news reporter in New Jersey, recently showed off the stark difference between her "news anchor voice" and her normal Philly accent. The veteran reporter and journalist has a strong social media presence and gets a lot of questions from viewers about her speaking voice. So, she decided to show us exactly how it works."We start tonight with breaking news," Lee begins in the all-too-familiar professional cadence. "First responders are on the scene of a major accident..." Sitting and filming in her car, she continues to recount the details of a fictitious story. Pretty convincingly, too.Suddenly, she switches into her native Philadelphia accent. "It's crazy out there, yo... The house in the middle of the block? That jawn caught on fire 'round 8 o'clock, flames start shootin' out of that jawn like crazy."(Jawn, according to the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia, is a "neutral, all-purpose noun used to reference any person, place, situation, or object. In casual conversation, it takes the place of the word thing.")In the video, Lee is hamming up her accent a little for fun, but it's still fascinating to see the contrast in action. @amandaleetv People never believe Im from North Philly and constantly ask to hear the “news anchor voice.” So here you go!! #newsvoice #philly #gobirds? Funny enough, the main element of a good TV news voice is that it does not contain any elements of accent or regionalism."The thing about working on TV in news, sports or entertainment is it's a very vagabond lifestyle, and if you're going to be successful at it, you'll be moving all over the place. To get a job somewhere you have to sound literally like you're from nowhere," says Amy Caples, a former news anchor and current broadcasting teaching "They're not going to hire you in Yuma, Arizona, if you talk like you're from the Bronx."Other distinct elements of the style include exaggerated pronunciation, a slow speaking cadence, and a lower-than-normal vocal tone.Lee discusses in another video that she had to work extremely hard to ditch her thick Philly accent when she went into TV news reporting. Words, phrases, and pronunciations she was used to using every day had to be rigorously trained out of her. But, "I'll never stop calling [a sandwich] a hoagie," she jokes. "A sub is a train, not a sandwich." @amandaleetv You never realize how thick your accent is until you move somewhere else. Plus sometimes our news stories are shared with stations in other states. I had to adjust??‍♀️ #philly #newsvoice #phillyslang Viewers were fascinated by Lee's ability to switch in and out of the TV voice, with the clip racking up tens of thousands of views."Now this is code switching at its finest," one commenter wrote.According to the Cleveland Health Clinic, "Code Switching" is the act of "Adjusting your identity to blend in and conform to a larger group is at the core of code-switching. It can happen in a range of contexts for a host of reasons."So, the TV news anchor voice isn't fake, per se. And it's not acting, necessarily. It's just an extremely dramatic shift journalists make when they're presenting their professional, unbiased selves versus the identity they may take on in a more relaxed setting. After the popularity of her first video, Lee filmed a follow up: "Anchor voice vs Philly Accent Pt. 2" to further demonstrate the funny differences: @amandaleetv Happy Labor Day Weekend! #anchorvoice #philly #news #switchup #codeswitch Some experts believe that the classic newscaster voice is dying out, in part due to its ineffectiveness at connecting with younger audiences.People who are used to getting their news and entertainment from social media, which is by nature far more casual, may be put off by news anchor voice and find it untrustworthy. Those of us who grew up with the nightly news on in the living room every evening came to find the voice dependable, professional, and authoritative. Younger people who haven't spent much time watching traditional news could find the strange speaking cadence, unnaturally low tones, and overly crisp pronunciation fake or unnatural.Whether the voice will eventually go away or not, Lee's video is a nice reminder that the journalists we see on TV are in fact regular people with diverse backgrounds, their own opinions, and of course, a heck of a lot of training to keep most of that hidden beneath the surface while they deliver the news.

Dad swears by this money-saving alternative to 'stressful' AP classes

On paper, AP classes, aka Advanced Placement courses, seem like a great opportunity to help teens get ahead. They get an early taste of college-level curriculum while earning college credit before high school ends, and therefore get advanced placement once actual college rolls around. But one dad argues that in reality, they are a waste of time and money, and suggests a rather brilliant alternative:“If you have a kid in high school, I'm going to tell you right now, do not put your kid in AP classes,” began content creator “Imperfect Dad” in a now-viral clip posted to TikTok. @imperfectdad__ Save money on college, do dual enrollment not AP classes #college #money ♬ original sound - ImperfectDad | Husband | Life “It's going to be a complete waste of their time, and you're going to stress them out for no reason,” he continued. His advice? Instead, opt for dual enrollment at a nearby college. While most high schools don’t advertise this option as much as they would for AP classes, Imperfect Dad explained that, “Your high school probably has a dual enrollment program with your local community college, meaning your kid can take college-level classes, and they will actually take over for some of their high school classes.”There are a few advantages to this method, Imperfect Dad argues. One, there’s far less pressure than with AP classes (which many experts and AP survivors can attest to). Two, not every college accepts AP classes for credit, making the pressure even more unnecessary. Three, the amount of time and money saved is, as Imperfect Dad put it, “immeasurable.” @imperfectdad__ Replying to @Erik Alvarez some of them were stressed! #college ♬ original sound - ImperfectDad | Husband | Life He of course speaks from experience, as he initiated this strategy with his own daughter. In lieu of AP classes, she did dual enrollment, only attending one class, and racking up so many credits that now, one semester later, she’s starting her FIRST day of college as a junior. “This first semester, she has one class. It's like a 2000-level class. And then everything else is right toward her major. You're going to save yourself a lot of money. Do the dual enrollment classes. Skip AP completely. Don't even bother,” Imperfect Dad concluded. Down in the comments, thousands were inclined to agree. Many of whom chose this path and reaped the benefits. “As an AP teacher…..this is pretty much true,”“I did this. Got into UCLA and now have a Doctorate in Pharmacy,”“My son is doing dual enrollment and graduating with an Associates and an HS diploma!”There were also plenty of folks who shared their own horror stories of taking AP classes and now wishing they hadn’t. “I took 6 AP classes in high school and not a single credit applied to my college transcript."However, as useful as dual enrollment can be, it’s worth knowing some of the disadvantages as well. For example, some private and out-of-state colleges might be more stringent in their transfer policies, so it still behooves students to check. Second, if a student does not do well in a dual enrollment class, that grade will travel with them throughout their college career. Third, there might be some difficult travel logistics to contend with, depending on where the nearby community college is. Fourth, not every high school offers dual enrollment. - YouTube www.youtube.com Still, many parents just like Imperfect Dad might find that the pros far outweigh the cons, which is why more parents and students should know about the option!
