Americans don’t just disagree on policies. In three key areas, they disagree on the principles that lead to the creation of those policies. The first is truth. Some people believe that absolute truth exists—a shared reality outside of ourselves. We may not like the truth, but attempting to deny it will only cause confusion, frustration, and failure. Others believe that truth is relative. Priority should be given to one’s lived experience and what individuals believe to be true. The debate where this is most obvious concerns sex. Either sex is based on biological reality or personal feelings. The former is objective and observable. The latter is subjective and self-selected. But this isn’t just a personal choice. It permeates societal disputes about pronouns, sports, locker rooms, and surgeries. In some places, biological men are housed in women’s prisons. Unsurprisingly, that has resulted in some of those men raping female prisoners. But the Left doesn’t care about those “lived experiences.” The second is American values. The Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” America hasn’t always lived up to this aspiration. Leaders like Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t call for the country to adopt new values. They pointed out the country’s shortcomings and urged America to live up to her ideals. That approach worked. Racial discrimination is largely illegal, although some leftist institutions continue to seek ways to enact de facto affirmative action schemes. But judging people by their character, not their skin color, isn’t universally celebrated these days. Critical race theory adherents don’t support neutral principles applied to individuals. They want to divide people by skin color. Then, they want the government to cram down homogeneous outcomes for each racial group. That’s the antithesis of protecting individual rights and judging people based on their merits. The third is God. The country was settled by colonists who held Judeo-Christian values. This is why numerous state constitutions once required elected officials to be Christians. The Founding Fathers weren’t shocked by this overt connection between politics and religion—they were counting on it. “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other,” John Adams wrote in 1798. He was the sitting president at the time. This is because limited government requires self-governance among the populace. Widespread belief in a God who judges individual actions and desires, Judeo-Christian morality has long been an indispensable part of that in America. How things have changed over the last century. The Supreme Court kicked God out of schools. This didn’t make public schools neutral. Something was going to fill the values vacuum. Schools now preach secular humanism, which functions like a religion for atheists. The number of Americans who believe in God has fallen noticeably since then. These principles are so foundational that even uneasy compromises won’t remain stable in the long run. Either one side or the other will emerge victorious in these debates. Look throughout human history. Profound disagreements like these have usually been settled with conquest and force, not logic and rhetoric. Preventing that from happening here requires zero tolerance for political violence, not celebrating Charlie Kirk’s assassination or protecting Antifa. These disputes don’t make the headlines. A Major California freeway was shutdown on Saturday after the U.S. Marines held a live-fire event. If you are unfamiliar with a live fire event it’s a military “exercise that uses real ammunition in a controlled, realistic combat simulation to train personnel, test equipment, or conduct a public demonstration.” Vice President JD Vance also made a special appearance at the event and gave a speech. CBS News provided further context about the event: The 5 Freeway, a major artery in Southern California, had closed for a period estimated at about four hours on Saturday for a live-fire event at Camp Pendleton in northern San Diego County that was being attended by Vice President JD Vance, this despite the U.S. Marine Corps’ previous insistence that the public highway would remain open. According to California Highway Patrol, the 5 was closed between Harbor Drive and Basilone Road beginning at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. The closure lasted until about 3 p.m. About 80,000 drivers daily travel the route, which connects San Diego and Orange counties. Despite initial plans to shut down the entire freeway during that time, the southbound lanes were reopened by noon. Vance, a Marine Corps veteran, spoke following the display, but did not comment on the freeway’s closure. He thanked current members for their service and celebrated the 250th anniversary of the USMC. “We are grateful to have all of you, whatever your rank, whatever your station in the Marine Corps, here at Camp Pendleton, to commemorate this incredible 250th anniversary of our beloved Marine Corps,” Vance said. “From these mountains and this water, Marines have deployed to every major fight of the last century, from island hopping across the Pacific, to Vietnam’s Hue city, to Kuwait, to Helmand and beyond. A left-wing lunatic teaching assistant at Illinois University was arrested by campus police after flipping over a promotional Turning Point USA table this week. 27-year-old Derek Lopez was filmed speaking to a man next to the table, which was set up by students to promote an upcoming campus event, before going berserk and flipping it over. He later tore down flyers for the TPUSA event, as well. A video of the incident went viral on social media. Reportedly, he learned that his sentence was commuted when he saw the news on TV in prison. New York Daily News reported: The New York Republican “was on a computer when inmates started yelling ‘Hey … you’re on TV,’” according to Long Island’s South Shore Press, for whom Santos wrote multiple essays during his brief time behind bars. “Santos ignored it, since he’s on the news all the time,” the outlet reported Saturday. “Thirty minutes later, he read the crawl at the bottom of the screen: ‘Santos Sentence Commuted.’” Less than five hours later, Santos was a free man, walking out of FCI Fairton in New Jersey, to his waiting family outside. Joseph Murray, one of his attorneys, confirmed he was released around 11 p.m. According to his lawyer, Santos needs time to decompress from his stay in prison, where he was kept largely in solitary confinement, before returning to public life.
