Reba’s Sister Once Gave Her A Christmas Gift That Has Kept Her Humble Over The Years: “I’m Not A Star — I’m A Twinkle”
No matter how famous you are or what level of success you achieve, you can always count on your family members to keep you humble.
Given that I am not a famous person, nor related to one, I assume it must be a weird experience for friends and family. The person you know is still the same goofy, loving, and caring family member or friend that you love, but they now have a massive spotlight on them and fans who idolize them in a way. While I am sure the dynamics of that relationship don’t change much when it comes to the quality time spent together, that time lessens as their schedule gets busier and they are on the road touring.
While I am sure it feels like a lot has changed, a lot probably stays the same.
Reba McEntire recently disclosed to People that her sister, Alice, gave her a gift years ago that keeps her close to her humble beginnings, reminding her that no matter how famous she becomes, she is always viewed the same in the eyes of her family members.
This year, Reba is celebrating 50 years and counting of her career in the music industry. The Oklahoma native signed her first record deal in 1976 after being discovered while singing the national anthem at the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. A young Reba McEntire had a pretty “decent” voice, so she often worked as the opening act, eventually leading to her discovery moment. Reba singing the “Star Spangled Banner” at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City kick-started her stardom as attendees were enthralled with her natural talent.
Throughout her career, she’s sold more than 75 million albums, landed 24 number-one singles, earned three Grammy Awards, and won CMA Female Vocalist of the Year four times, among other accolades.
“Time flies when you’re having fun. Wow, I still see where I was signing the contract 50 years ago… I had no idea about the music business. I was a rodeo cowgirl; I was a rancher’s daughter, and a rodeo brat. To get into the music business was scary, leaving all my friends and my family, but I had great people who guided me. That was the thing I got out of this whole career — my friends.”
Reba reflects on her time in the music industry, noting that she was a deer in headlights, entering the space, not knowing how this career worked, nor did she think it would span as long as it has today.
“See, I thought when you got a record label to sign, you had a record on the radio, well, you got a tour bus, and you’re rich. My first tour bus was years later, and it broke down every day. Before that, I was in vans and pickup trucks with campers and horse trailers to haul the gear and stuff. My imagination wasn’t big enough to even create what I’ve gotten to do in my career.”
Reba’s success story is truly inspiring, and she serves as a role model for many women trying to make it in the country music space today.
However, no matter what accolades Reba has to her name, her siblings will always see her as the sister who was running around on the ranch and rodeoing with them growing up. In fact, Reba keeps in touch with her humble beginnings by keeping a rather cheeky gift her sister once gave her for Christmas around.
“My sister Alice, for Christmas one year, gave me a toilet seat cover. On the top of the toilet seat, it said, ‘The Twinkle,’ to let me know I’m not a star — I’m a twinkle. Keeps me grounded.”
HA. Nothing like a reminder of how far you’ve come when visiting the porcelain throne. Reba, if you’re reading this, please give the people what they want… a picture of this glorious “The Twinkle” toilet seat cover.
Despite being a national icon, Reba has still kept in touch with her roots and has not let the limelight get to her head. Reba is still the corn dog-loving, rodeo-championing girl from McAlester, Oklahoma, that we first saw singing the “Star Spangled Banner.”
