Domestic. After several immigrants in home care were prosecuted and convicted of aggravated rapes of elderly women with dementia, a researcher now wants to see a total ban on men in women's home care.

– We should not have any men in home care – possibly those who can go to a man's home and help him, but not with women, says Britt-Inger Saveman, professor emerita in nursing at Umeå University, to Swedish Radio.

Saveman has been researching men's violence against women for over 40 years and warns that violence against the elderly is often overlooked in healthcare. She believes that even suspicions must be taken seriously, without requiring proof - something she already emphasized in an interview with Uppsala University in November 2024.

“You feel disgust, a clear disgust in these cases,” she says of the latest rape cases.

The three men in question have worked in home care in Uppsala, Umeå and Timrå. They have been convicted or charged with raping a total of eight women in their 80s and 90s.

The proposal to ban men from home care, however, is receiving criticism. Åsa Selander, chairwoman of the health and care section in Kommunal Sundsvall, rejects the idea of ​​a gender ban.

– It would be really devastating – we really can't shut down a whole group of people, she tells Sveriges Radio, pointing out that the most important thing is to check references when hiring.
