Federal prosecutors said an alleged point-shaving scheme involved more than 39 college basketball players on at least 17 NCAA Division I teams. The alleged scheme ran from September 2022 to February 2025, with many of the defendants having played in the 2023-24 and/or 2024-25 seasons. “Four of the players charged — Simeon Cottle, Carlos Hart, Camian Shell and Oumar Koureissi — have played for their current teams in the past week,” ESPN stated. “The sportsbooks would not have paid out those wagers had they known that the defendants fixed those games,” the indictment said, according to ABC News. None of the allegations against them were from this season. Eastern Michigan said in a statement that Hart has been suspended from all team activities pending the outcome of the case. Cottle, the Conference USA preseason player of the year for Kennesaw State, is averaging a team-high 20.2 points per game this season. He scored 21 points, including five of the final eight points of the game, in the Owls’ win over Florida International on Wednesday. Authorities described five defendants as “fixers,” who recruited players to participate in the scheme and offered bribes ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 to intentionally underperform. The bettors then placed and won millions of dollars in wagers on the fixed games, according to prosecutors. At least two of the defendants, Shane Hennen and Marves Fairley, were also charged in a federal indictment in the Eastern District of New York centered on gambling schemes in the NBA. Three of the other alleged fixers had connections in college basketball. The defendants are charged with bribery in sporting contests and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The alleged fixers are also charged with additional counts of wire fraud. The bribery charges carry a maximum sentence of five years. The fraud charges carry a maximum sentence of up to 20 years. “In placing these wagers on games they had fixed, the defendants defrauded sportsbooks, as well as individual sports bettors, who were all unaware that the defendants had corruptly manipulated the outcome of these games that should have been decided fairly, based on genuine competition and the best efforts of the players,” the indictment said, ABC News noted. Blakeney also allegedly recruited other players from his team to join the scheme. Fairley and Hennen are also charged in a separate illegal gambling case involving the NBA. After profiting on the fixed CBA games, Fairley, Hennen and Blakeney allegedly turned their attention to fixing NCAA men’s basketball games. Blakeney is named but not charged. Federal prosecutors noted some of the defendants are “charged elsewhere.” They are accused of recruiting players who would help ensure their team failed to cover the spread of the first half of a game or an entire game, the indictment said. The fixers would then place wagers on those games through sportsbooks, betting against the team whose player or players they had bribed to engage in this point-shaving scheme, the indictment said. Vice President JD Vance had to break the 50-50 deadlock in the Senate on a Republican motion to dismiss the bill. The legislation, even if it had cleared the Senate, had virtually no chance of becoming law because it would eventually need to be signed by Trump himself. But it represented both a test of GOP loyalty to the president and a marker for how much leeway the Republican-controlled Senate is willing to give Trump to use the military abroad. Another ICE-involved shooting has happened in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Tonight, an illegal man from Venezuela was shot by an ICE agent after violently attacking the officer with a shovel. The illegal alien was shot in the leg. Both he and the ICE agent are now in the hospital. They also said that the ICE agent was ambushed by two other individuals after chasing down and trying to detain the subject. Fearing for his life, the officer opened fire after the subject got loose and started hitting him with a shovel or broom stick. In an attempt to evade arrest, the subject fled the scene in his vehicle and crashed into a parked car. The subject then fled on foot. The law enforcement officer caught up to the subject on foot and attempted to apprehend him when the subject began to resist and violently assault the officer. While the subject and law enforcement were in a struggle on the ground, two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle. As the officer was being ambushed and attacked by the two individuals, the original subject got loose and began striking the officer with a shovel or broom stick. Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired a defensive shot to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg. All three subjects ran back into the apartment and barricaded themselves inside. The attacked officer and subject are both in the hospital. Both attackers are in custody. This attack on another brave member of law enforcement took place while Minnesota’s top leaders, Governor Walz and Mayor Frey, are actively encouraging an organized resistance to ICE and federal law enforcement officers. Their hateful rhetoric and resistance against men and women who are simply trying to do their jobs must end. Federal law enforcement officers are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest criminals and lawbreakers. Absolutely wild. President Trump just confirmed that the contractor who was caught leaking classified information about the U.S. military’s operations in Venezuela has been found and put in jail. But, it’s not over yet. He also hinted that more leakers may be arrested very soon. Thankfully, they did not publish the story, reportedly due to concerns for our troop’s safety. NBC News has more details on this traitor: The contractor is Navy veteran Aurelio Perez-Lugones, who is a system administrator in Maryland and who has been charged with “unlawful retention of national defense information,” according to a criminal complaint filed Jan. 9 in the U.S. District Court for the District Court of Maryland. Perez-Lugones, a Miami-born U.S. citizen who “possesses a Top Secret security clearance,” made his first court appearance in the case last Friday, the complaint states. The FBI has accused Perez-Lugones of searching databases containing classified information without authorization and either printing or taking screenshots of that material, according to the complaint. That material that Perez-Lugones allegedly began collecting in October is described in the complaint as “related to a foreign country.” “Perez-Lugones had no need to know and was not authorized to search for, access, view, screenshot, or print any of this information,” the complaint states. The FBI had been watching Perez-Lugones as recently as last week, doing surveillance of him while he was in a SCIF, which is a secure room for handling top secret information, the complaint states. Perez-Lugones was monitored logging in to systems. And the complaint includes a photo of him from January 6, leaving his workplace with a black bag. Two days later, federal investigators searched Perez-Lugones’ house in Laurel, Maryland and found a document marked “SECRET” in the basement, the complaint states. “While searching Perez-Lugones’ car, investigators located a lunch box in which a document was marked as SECRET,” the complaint states. “One of more of these documents are related to national defense.” As part of the ongoing investigation, the home of Washington Post journalist Hannah Natanson was raided earlier today. Madison Sheahan, the No. 2 official at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has stepped down from her position and will run for Congress to challenge Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH). Kaptur is the longest-serving woman in Congress, serving as the U.S. representative for Ohio’s 9th congressional district since 1983. “I’m Madison Sheahan. In it, she thanks President Donald Trump and Secretary of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for their “steadfast commitment” to the agency and expressed pride in what ICE has accomplished. Kaptur’s seat is among top targets for national Republicans this fall, as it is every cycle. She defeated Republican state Rep. Derek Merrin by such a close margin two years ago that The Associated Press did not call the race until official results were entered, more than two weeks after the election. The final result was 48.3% to 47.6%.
