Alice Cooper recalls his reaction to Ozzy Osbourne’s death

Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne were good friends for decades and the American musician recalled in an interview with 93.3 WMMR radio how he reacted when he first heard that the Black Sabbath vocalist had passed. He said that at first he thought it was something fake but then decided to call Johnny Depp to join him on stage during the show he would perform so that they could pay tribute to his late friend, playing the classic "Paranoid". Alice Cooper recalls his reaction to Ozzy Osbourne's death "I was on my way on stage in Scotland, I think it was, going on stage, and somebody said, 'Ozzy just passed.' And I went, 'Oh, it's one of those A.I. stories that you can never believe any of these stories.' And then somebody said, 'No, for real. He's gone.' And I went, 'How weird. Just two weeks ago they had the big thing in Birmingham. And then they must have known — he must have known that he was on his way.' But at the same time, the O2, I said, 'Well, yeah, we have to tip our hat to Ozzy.'" "Of course, he was an old, 40-year-old friend for me; I've known him forever. So, I called up Johnny Depp, who's in the Hollywood Vampires with me. And Johnny's a killer guitar player. I mean, he's a really good guitar player. He was playing with Jeff Beck when Jeff Beck passed away. So, you don't play with Jeff Beck unless you're a guitar player. And he came up, and we never told the audience what we were gonna do." He continued: "At the end of 'School's Out', they figured, 'Well, there's nothing else after that,' with the balloons and the confetti and the whole thing. Then the guitar player starts 'Paranoid', and the place went crazy. And at the end, I just said, 'Hey,' I said, 'Everybody say good night to Ozzy.' There must have been knowledge of, you don't have that much longer. And [Ozzy's wife and manager] Sharon's such a great lady, and [their kids] Jack and Kelly, they're really a cool family. I felt very, very sorry. But I think at least it wasn't sudden. I think that they saw it coming and prepared for it," Alice Cooper said (Transcribed by Blabbermouth). Ozzy Osbourne passed away at the age of 76 last July 22, earlier that month he had played his final solo show and the last one with Black Sabbath at the Villa Park in Birmingham, the band's hometown. During that festival, many bands like Metallica, Slayer, Guns N' Roses and supergroups formed by former members of Ozzy's solo years, paid tribute to him and Sabbath playing some of their famous tracks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD3jeUq7sm0The post Alice Cooper recalls his reaction to Ozzy Osbourne’s death appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Bob Daisley says Ozzy allegedly hit Randy Rhoads and called him ungrateful

The bassist and lyricist Bob Daisley was one of the musicians who were most important for Ozzy Osbourne on his solo career. Daisley said in an interview with Sefan Adika that shortly before Randy Rhoads' tragic death, the guitarist was wanting to leave the band and the Black Sabbath vocalist wasn't happy with it. According to the bassist, the drummer Tommy Aldridge, who replaced Lee Kerslake in the band in the early 80s, told him later that Ozzy allegedly hit Rhoads and called him ungrateful once. Bob Daisley says Ozzy allegedly hit Randy Rhoads and called him ungrateful "(They fired me in the early 80s) because I wouldn't agree to something that I thought was wrong, and that was getting rid of Lee (Kerslake). I kept on being asked and approached about, 'Let's get rid of Lee, let's get Tommy Aldridge in the band.' And I said, 'No, I can't agree to that.' And I wouldn't agree to that." "So, eventually, they got rid of both of us. And then, six weeks later, I got the phone call, 'Will you come back and do the third album.' So, I suppose it was their way of getting rid of Lee without me being able to have a say, because I wasn't there for a while." "But I did want to work with Ozzy and Randy again. So I agreed to come back and do the third album, which I said earlier, was 'Bark at the Moon,' after Randy got killed. That third album was meant to happen in 1982 with me and Randy and Ozzy and Tommy Aldridge. But Randy was killed on the 19th of March '82, and that was it. Everything else was put on the back burner after that." "(Before Randy's death) I know that Ozzy wasn't pleased about finding out about Randy wanting to leave. Because he did know. I wasn't there, but Tommy Aldridge told me that he hit Randy and called him 'an ungrateful little shit.' (Laughs) So who knows what would have happened. I don't know, and I wasn't there, so it's alleged," Bob Daisley said (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar). Bob Daisley's work with Ozzy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVUGp-qoi2E Despite the legal battles over the years, the longtime Ozzy Osbourne bassist and lyricist Bob Daisley recently lamented the death of his former boss and bandmate. Daisley was part of Ozzy’s band from 1979 to 1981, 1983 to 1985, 1988 (As a session musician), 1990 to 1991 (As a session musician) and from 1994 to 1995. After leaving Ozzy’s band there were legal battles against Ozzy Osbourne and his wife/manager Sharon to claim songwriting credits and royalties over the successful lyrics he wrote for most of Ozzy’s successful records. In 2002, Sharon called Rob Trujillo and Mike Bordin to re-record the bass and drum tracks on “Blizzard of Ozz” and “Diary of a Madman” to avoid paying Daisley and the drummer Lee Kerslake royalties. Eventually, the original versions were restored in later reissues. The post Bob Daisley says Ozzy allegedly hit Randy Rhoads and called him ungrateful appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Mastodon’s Brent Hinds dies at the age of 51

The original Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds tragically died at the age of 51 last August 20. He was involved in a motorcycle accident in the band's hometown of Atlanta. Acccording to Atlanta News First, the musician was riding his Harley Davidson when the driver of a BMW SUV failed to yield making a turn at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Boulevard. According to the police the accident happened around 11:34 p.m. In March the band announced that them and Hinds had "mutually decided to part ways" but earlier this month the guitar player said he was kicked out of the group. The band talked about the death of Brent Hinds in an official statement: "We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many." "Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent," the band said. The group's current line-up has three other original members: Brann Dailor (Drums and vocals), Bill Kelliher (Rhythm Guitar), Troy Sanders (Bass and vocals). Mastodon was formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000 and since them released 8 studio albums, the most recent one being Hushed and Grim in 2021. They have became one of the most influential American Heavy Metal bands from the past two decades. The post Mastodon’s Brent Hinds dies at the age of 51 appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Ian Anderson’s opinion on Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift

Ian Anderson’s opinion on Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift

The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ian Anderson co-founded Jethro Tull in 1967 and has remained the band’s leader and the only member to appear on every album they released. He played a fundamental role in the evolution of Progressive Rock, with Jethro Tull selling an estimated 60 million records worldwide. After nearly six decades in the music business, Anderson has witnessed countless new artists and musical styles emerge. Over the years, he has shared his thoughts on some of them, including more recent names such as Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift. What is Ian Anderson’s opinion on Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift As expected, Ian Anderson is not a fan of artists like Ed Sheran and Taylor Swift. He talked about them when comparing the music from his era and the current state of songwriting. "I'm in a situation now that some of my musical heroes, some 17, 18 teenager fan listens to them for the first time. (Then they think) 'Wow, I want to do that'. Because we do have some younger fans who are excited by the music of the great area of Classic Rock music. From mid-60s onwards really a huge success particularly from British acts to some degree in the USA." "But a lot of British Rock bands who began in the late 60s and perhaps by the early 70s were internationally well-known. They are the great Classic Rock bands of the period and it's hard to go today very far without comparing their music with music today. You have to choose between Ed Sheeran, (I'm trying to) think of another singer. Cat Stevens, let's say, singer-songwriter from the early 70s." He continued: "I mean, surely you couldn't have any hesitation in saying: well, Cat Stevens was a great singer-songwriter. Not only in terms of performance but the fact that the music and the songs that he wrote. We never heard that before whereas something like Ed Sheeran. No offense to Ed Sheeran, he's a very talented Pop singer and Pop songwriter. But I don't think you can claim that it's very original. Because the way he sings, contents of his lyrics and music. It's stuff we've heard many, many, many times over the years, like Taylor Swift." "To some people it seems new. But to people like me who've been exposed to music for 60 years, it doesn't sound very interesting or new. So I'm grateful that we are part of that Classic Rock tradition. Progressive Rock, Folk Rock, whatever you wanna call it," Ian Anderson told Rocknews in 2025 (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage). Ian Anderson said his music is for people who seek something deeper than Ed Sheeran The musician had already said that somebody has to do what he does as a songwriter. Because people won't get this kind of "searching philosophical" analysis from artists like Ed Sheeran. Anderson explained that unlike Pop artists nowadays, he is a songwriter who doesn't care if he gets called pretentious for the songs he writes. (Translated by Rock and Roll Garage) "I'm not interested in introducing myself to the new generations. If someone doesn't know who I am, it's better for them to go listen to Ed Sheeran and his pleasant-to-the-ear music. Mine is different. It's a harsh, complex, deep listening experience... Most musicians write songs about relationships or being in love. And then there are those of us who try to create a setting. (They) tell a story, create images. (They) talk about other worlds that people aren't familiar with," he told LOC in 2023. Anderson said Rock is music for adults these days https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Vv-BfVoq4g&list=RD2Vv-BfVoq4g&start_radio=1&pp=ygUKZWQgc2hlZXJhbqAHAQ%3D%3D Already back in 2018, Anderson mentioned the two artists when talking about the current state of music. "Rock is now music for adults. The boys listen to pop, followed by Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift. Rock has grown up with the old guys, the ones who had the ideals," he told Il Giornale. Ian Anderson was born in 1947 and Jethro Tull was formed in 1967. So when Ed Sheeran was born in 1991 and Taylor Swift in 1989, Anderson had already been in the music business for more than 20 years. By the time they began their musical careers in the early 2000s, Jethro Tull had already been active for over three decades. So it is common for artists from different generations not to like what is being done these days. With technology and internet, a lot changed in the world, especially the way people perceive music. It's interesting because a lot of young people never listened to an entire album. Many artists who are aligned with the taste of the new generations are not even worried about making a complete record. Because most of the time EPs or only singles are enough for their success. Although a person can hear almost any band they want these days with one click, most people are passive when it comes to music. Because the algorithms choose for them what they will hear. So there is no need anymore to search and discover new groups if you're not a big music fan. Not only music changed but almost everything around it. So it's quite different from the late 60s when Tull was formed. The post Ian Anderson’s opinion on Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.
