Park East Synagogue — led by 95-year-old Holocaust survivor Rabbi Arthur Schneier — hosted a perfectly legal informational event run by Nefesh B’Nefesh, which helps Jews immigrate to Israel. For this crime, a mob of pro-Palestinian activists declared themselves judge, jury, and street-corner executioners, braying about intifada while hurling obscenities at Jews trying to enter a house of worship. But Mamdani’s press secretary issued this statement from the mayor-elect: “The Mayor-elect has discouraged the language used at last night’s protest and will continue to do so. He believes every New Yorker should be free to enter a house of worship without intimidation, and that these sacred spaces should not be used to promote activities in violation of international law.” When pressed, his office explained that the “international law” being violated is — wait for it — helping Jews move to Israel, which they said amounts to promoting “settlement activity beyond the Green Line.” So a 95-year-old Holocaust survivor hosts an informational evening, a mob surrounds his synagogue screaming for intifada, and Mamdani’s instinct is not to condemn the mob but to reach for his imaginary pocket Constitution of the International Criminal Court and imply that the synagogue had it coming. Mamdani has somehow weaponized “international law” as a rhetorical air freshener to cover the stench of refusing to forthrightly condemn a crowd that literally blocked Jews from a synagogue while shouting violent slogans. But hey, he “discourages” the language. Meanwhile, real leaders had no trouble saying what anyone with functional eyesight saw. Mayor Eric Adams called the mob “sick and warped.” Mamdani’s response signals exactly what New Yorkers can expect: when antisemitism erupts, he’ll open his international law textbook, clear his throat, and explain why the Jews need to examine their role in being targeted.

A mother is speaking out after learning that the alleged sex offender who preyed upon her 13-year-old daughter was an illegal immigrant set free by local authorities who chose not to notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Trump administration recently brought the case to light after launching mass deportation raids in Charlotte. While exposing local authorities for setting illegal immigrants free, the Department of Homeland Security highlighted the case of Costa Rican illegal immigrant Jordan Renato Castillo-Chavez, 29, as one out of roughly 1,400 cases in Charlotte where local cops refused to honor federal immigration detainers. “It’s hurtful that my child is a victim and they had this person and let him go,” the victim’s mother, Misha Rose, whose own father was deported from the United States after committing a crime, told WSOC. “This is serious … we need justice, he needs to go,” she said as she fought back tears. But he later bonded out of custody. “There was this message from this guy, and I was like, ‘Who is this?’ and she was like, ‘Oh, that’s my friend, I just met him online.’ And I looked at the messages, there were photos, there were messages that indicated he was like coming to pick her up, and I immediately just like dropped, like I fainted, like this is not happening right now,” Rose recalled. The Department of Homeland Security said local authorities failed to honor their detainer request to hand over the illegal immigrant if he was to be released. The Mecklenburg County sheriff’s office, however, claims that ICE made a request for advanced notice of Castillo-Chavez’s release, but never issued a formal detainer, according to WSOC. The sheriff’s office said they never notified federal immigration agents because there was no legal requirement in place. Meanwhile, the Trump administration continues its deployment of Border Patrol agents to Charlotte to clean up the mess created by sanctuary policies. The feds have already made over 200 arrests since the operation began over the weekend. “Americans should be able to live without fear of violent criminal illegal aliens hurting them, their families, or their neighbors,” Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said recently of the operation. “There have been too many victims of criminal illegal aliens. President Trump and Secretary Noem will step up to protect Americans when sanctuary politicians won’t,” she said.

News Wuthering Heights Emerald Fennell Confirms Her Wuthering Heights Movie Isn’t Exactly What It Seems The word “disemboweling” is used in a Fennell quote in a way it has never been used before. The latest trailer for Emerald Fennell’s take on Wuthering Heights was … well, it was something. The movie has the title in quotation marks, so it’s really “Wuthering Heights” this time. But why, punctuation pedants (implicating myself here), wanted to know? Well, we may have a small hint. Along with writing and directing the film, Fennell has “curated” a new edition of the novel for Simon & Schuster’s Female Filmmakers Collection. It is less than clear what this means, other than picking a slightly perplexing cover image (most of the Reactor staff initially thought the image, below, was more gynecological than equine-related) and writing a foreword. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “each volume will be curated by a different director, tasked with curating a movie-inspired cover, writing a new foreword, and imbuing the paperback with cinematic references and Easter eggs.” In her foreword, Fennell writes of the novel, “It is too slippery, too wild, too good to distill into two hours of film. Instead what I have attempted to do is adapt my own experience of reading it for the first time. It is an adaptation of a feeling: my first disemboweling by the baby god.” My first disemboweling by the baby god. Just sit with that for a minute. If Fennell is not actually doing a straight adaptation of Emily Brontë’s book—a theory that was already floating around out there—then it helps make sense of a few of the things in the trailer, including the quotation marks and the age of at least one of the stars. The text along with the trailer does note that the film is “inspired by the greatest love story of all time,” and “inspired by” is not the same as “based on,” though either way I take issue with the rest of that sentence. “Wuthering Heights,” which stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, is in theaters February 14, 2026. The not-a-tie-in edition of the novel arrives on shelves a bit earlier, on February 3.
