Windows Broken Into Become Earrings in One Woman’s Quest to Keep Glass Out of Landfills

Car break-ins in the Bay Area are down, but not out. From each one of these ugly surprises, local artisan Sydney Jones creates a surprising amount of beauty. Using a kitchen-top kiln, she takes advantage of safety glass’ crystalline structure to quickly turn the broken pieces into floral-themed earrings of jade green. It not only […] The post Windows Broken Into Become Earrings in One Woman’s Quest to Keep Glass Out of Landfills appeared first on Good News Network.

What to Watch and Read This Weekend: Wicked: For Good, Mr. Robot For Chaos

News What to Watch What to Watch and Read This Weekend: Wicked: For Good, Mr. Robot For Chaos Plus: Dev Patel is David Copperfield and all the books you haven’t read. By Molly Templeton | Published on November 21, 2025 Photo: Universal Studios and USA Network Comment 0 Share New Share Photo: Universal Studios and USA Network We’re not talking about that holiday next week. You know the one. If you love it, more power to you! I will be at the bar, not doing holiday things, because that’s how I roll. But I will also be reading a lot of books. In fact that is my primary non-work plan for the rest of this year: reading books. It’s glum outside, I’m tired, my apartment is full of books. There are worse ways to spend a month. (I will also be watching Pluribus, which I finally started.) That said, it is still—and always—the season to call your reps. And to kick some leaves if they’re falling where you live. And maybe to stomp in a puddle or four. You know. Fall! Fall, slinking into winter. Long scarves and warm beverages are coming, but they’re not here just yet. Anyway, let’s watch some stuff, yeah? Yes, Dev Patel Played David Copperfield in a Movie Directed by Armando Iannucci, and That Rules Do you have a little mental list of movies that you always mean to watch, but whenever you sit down to watch something, the entire list deletes itself from your brain, only to return at some inopportune moment? I feel like I actually have a lot of these lists, and The Personal History of David Copperfield is on all of them. The thing is, this isn’t just Dev Patel as David Copperfield. It’s Dev Patel as David Copperfield, directed by Armando Iannucci. Iannucci isn’t exactly a household name, but should be; for one thing, he created Veep. But in my heart he’s primarily the writer and director of In the Loop, a political satire film spinoff of his series The Thick of It. I’ve still never seen The Thick of It, and I adore In the Loop, which features, among other delights, Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi saying “Fuckety-bye” with a truly biting depth of scorn. My point is, Iannucci is enjoyable, even without all the available context. The New York Times says he “exhibits a light touch” in his take on David Copperfield, which stars, along with Patel, the power trio of Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, and Capaldi. And it’s got Ben Whishaw and Morfydd Clark! I have got to get to this before it leaves Hulu (where you can watch it now). You Don’t Need an Excuse To Watch Mr. Robot, But We Have One In any given year there are more TV, book, and movie anniversaries than a single human can possibly keep track of. But one particular anniversary this year didn’t get quite the attention I wish it had: the 10th anniversary of Mr. Robot. Yes, there was a panel at NYCC, and now that I’m actively searching for them, I’ve found a few articles. But, like, come on. The time was more than ripe for a lot of rich revisiting of this still-underrated show. Sam Esmail’s series was brilliant, prescient, incredibly acted—it’s one of those shows where you wonder why every single performer isn’t now the lead in seventeen new projects—brazen, daring, clever, human, biting … I could go on. The only reason I haven’t yet made it through a rewatch is because this show is dense, and smart, and requires attention and patience. The second season threw viewers into the deep end and expected you to tread water until the reality of what was happening to protagonist Eliot Alderson (Rami Malek) became clear. The constant machinations and complications are rich and elaborate—and so is the character work. (B.D. Wong is amazing in this.) If you never watched it, it’s on Netflix now. Plan your weekend(s) accordingly. Yes, I Talked About Wicked Last Week, But This Is Different In all the fuss over Wicked: For Good, it’s easy for one individual interview—especially one that’s not with one of the movie’s stars—to get overlooked. But Soraya Nadia McDonald’s interview with costume designer Paul Tazewell is simply the best thing I’ve read in connection with these big witchy spectacles. For all that John M. Chu’s Oz looks like cake overall, the details are fascinating (I’m still thinking about those damn tulips! And the water tank for Shiz!). Tazewell’s costumes are fantastic and lush across the board; he won an Oscar earlier this year for his work on the first film. McDonald’s interview isn’t only about Wicked, but about Tazewell’s career, and about fashion and justice and expression and texture and beauty—and his history with Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo, who Tazewell also costumed for Harriet. It’s just fantastic. I haven’t even seen the movie yet and I want Tazewell to win every Oscar.  It’s List-Making Season and the Books Are Looking at Me Funny The end-of-year lists are beginning to roll in, despite the fact that it’s November. I’m not looking, honestly; I haven’t read enough new books this year to have strong opinions about what’s the year’s best (yet). I have a little running list of “things that people I trust have said are very good,” and it includes Notes from a Regicide, Audition (this one and this one, though the latter isn’t SFF), Luminous, and The Everlasting, among others. (The very short list of 2025 books that I’ve already read and loved is topped by The Raven Scholar.) Am I going to get to all of these before the year ends? No, and it doesn’t matter! Reading doesn’t have to happen on a schedule. I’m just taking this little moment to remind you of that: for readers, “best of” lists are subjective tools for future shopping. Not lists of things you should have already read or ever have to read. That said, what’s good? What did you love? What’s in your pile to read if you get a minute to yourself in the next few weeks?[end-mark] The post What to Watch and Read This Weekend: <i>Wicked: For Good</i>, <i>Mr. Robot</i> For Chaos appeared first on Reactor.

Colbert And Warren Try To Push Mamdani On The Rest Of The Country

CBS’s Stephen Colbert welcomed Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren to the Thursday taping of The Late Show for a three-segment-long interview that included an attempt to push New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on the rest of the country by reducing his radical leftism to mere concerns about affordability. Ever the New Yorker, Colbert had an analogy, “You campaigned for Mayor-elect Mamdani, and while New York has its own issues and concerns, and New York doesn't necessarily vote the way the rest of the country votes, his message of affordability his message of the rights and dignity of working people, I think, is a very powerful one that, you know, it may open in New York, but like a Broadway show, it's going to play very well in the national tour.”     He also added, “Some people say this is only for New York. I disagree, I think he's identified something that, yes, is in New York with its diverse population, but everyone in America sees something in this for them. On both sides of the aisle, by the way, the complaints are similar.” Colbert wanted to define Mamdani-ism as a focus on affordability and not any set of actual policies, such as his flat earth theory-like embrace of things like rent control. He also omitted that earlier in the week, Mamdani didn’t exactly allay concerns about his anti-Semitism when he both sides-ed an anti-Semitic mob outside a synagogue. According to Mamdani, the event—which simply promoted immigration to Israel—violated “international law,” which is not true, but even if it was, it would be irrelevant considering that the event would still be protected by the First Amendment. For her part, Warren took the opportunity to further hype the man she campaigned for by also reducing him to a cliché about the cost of living: Yeah, well this is the whole point. Remember, Donald Trump, when he ran, kept saying over and over and over that he would lower costs for American families on day one. Those were his words. On day one. So here we are now, ten months later, and the cost of groceries is up, the cost of utilities is up, the cost of housing is up, and the Republicans are literally pushing the cost of health care through the stratosphere. So, what are Democrats going to do? It's what we've already seen in this most recent election. Zohran ran with a real focus making his city more affordable for working families. Michelle Wu ran on that and won by 49 points against a billionaire. Go Michelle. But notice, it’s already jumped the river. Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey ran on affordability. The two public utility commissioners down in Georgia. First Democrats to win statewide in like 111-ty years ran on affordability. Literally no one is against improving the cost of living. What many people object to is an economically illiterate socialist who attacks his city’s Jewish population. Here is a transcript for the November 20-taped show: CBS The Late Show with Stephen Colbert 11/21/2025 12:25 AM ET STEPHEN COLBERT: You campaigned for Mayor-elect Mamdani. ELIZABETH WARREN: I did. COLBERT: And, while New York has its own issues and concerns, and New York doesn't necessarily vote the way the rest of the country votes, his message of affordability— WARREN: Yeah. COLBERT: — his message of the rights and dignity of working people, I think, is a very powerful one that, you know, it may open in New York, but like a Broadway show, it's going to play very well in the national tour. Some people say this is only for New York. WARREN: Oh no. How GOP leadership can turn a midterm gift into a total disaster

Did Donald Trump secretly plan this fight over the Jeffrey Epstein files to lure Democrats into another political trap? No. I don’t believe he did. I know people close to the president who were frustrated over the summer when he abruptly shifted from promising the files' release to calling it a “distraction” and a “hoax.” I said at the time on my show that the switch was the first major misstep of Trump 2.0.But I understand why the 4D-chess theory is so tempting now. It looks like a setup. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) spent months attacking Trump over Epstein. Then we learned that Jeffries may have accepted donor requests from Epstein after Epstein’s first sex-offense conviction. And a Democrat from the Virgin Islands — Epstein’s district — was literally taking dictation from Epstein on what questions to ask in a congressional hearing. The 2026 midterms are coming fast. If the GOP wants to avoid another preventable disaster, it had better stop rehearsing the same script. Those are facts, not theories. The deeper truth, though, has nothing to do with strategy. American politics follows two patterns, and both showed up again this week.First, Republicans pre-emptively surrender. Always.Watch Democrats tell soldiers to ignore orders while Trump follows every instruction a federal judge hands him. His restraint isn’t Romney-level, but the Republicans around him shrink the space for any real fight. That’s why Attorney General Pam Bondi is developing a well-deserved reputation for overpromising and under-delivering.RELATED: The right message: Justice. The wrong messenger: Pam Bondi. Photo by Andrew Harnik/Getty ImagesSecond, Democrats always overreach when Republicans fold.We saw it in 2018 when Republicans gave up on repealing Obamacare and lost 40 House seats for their cowardice. The pattern continued in 2020, as Democrats pushed their false god evangelism into insane absolutism — on “fortifying” elections, on arresting Trump, on forcing people into taking the poisonous jab, on transitioning kids. It was mark of the beast stuff, and voters wanted no part of it.The latest example came this week, when Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) answered a question from a friendly reporter about why Democrats never pursued the Epstein files when they had the chance by snapping, “What is [Trump] hiding?” The Senate had just voted almost unanimously to release those files, and instead of revealing Trump, former Bill Clinton hack Lawrence Summers stood exposed for his ties to the sex offender, seeking his counsel as “wingman” in an effort to seduce the daughter of a high Chinese Communist Party official.RELATED: ‘Swamp protects itself’: Republicans shield Epstein-texting Democrat — allegedly to save Cory Mills’ hide Anna Rose Layden/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesBoth parties cling to their worst instincts. Republicans surrender too easily. Democrats push too far. And no politician in modern history has been buoyed more by his opponents’ excesses than Donald Trump. So once again, Republicans hold the advantage on the Epstein files — at least for the moment. But early signs suggest they may squander it. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Pam Bondi appear ready to narrow or redact the release into something the base will see as betrayal. If that happens, Democrats won’t need to win the argument. Republicans will beat themselves. The 2026 midterms are coming fast. If the GOP wants to avoid another preventable disaster, it had better stop rehearsing the same script.A little discipline — and a little courage — would go a long way.
