Slipknot Sue Cyber-Squatter
Slipknot filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday (10/15) alleging that an anonymous web operator has held the domain slipknot.com since 2001 to advertise counterfeit merchandise.
Unable to use slipnot.com domain for the band’s official website, they host the Slipknot store on slipknot1.com.
“The domain name was registered in an effort to profit off of plaintiff’s goodwill and to trick unsuspecting visitors — under the impression they are visiting a website owned, operated or affiliated with plaintiff — into clicking on web searches and other sponsored links,” wrote Slipknot’s lawyer.
The lawsuit claims slipknot.com hosts pay-for-click advertising that directs users to counterfeit merchandise (clothing, signature masks, etc.) emblazoned with Slipknot’s trademarks. The band alleges these sponsored links hurt the sale of legit merch.
Real Merch From The Ral Store
The case also accuses slipknot.com’s site operator of trademark infringement and unfair competition. Slipknot is seeking an injunction and unspecified financial damages.
