I feel like we’re getting toward the end, and that will be fine, too. I think so, yeah (it will be the end). And I am OK with that.” “Because I would like to spend more time with my family, and I would like to spend more time growing vegetables. We see the airports and the hotel room and the venue, and we don’t get out much. I’d like to go back to the places I’ve been and see more of those places before it all disappears.” “(There are) lots of things to do. I don’t ever want to have a one-dimensional life. Duane Allman’s opinion on Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead

Duane Allman’s opinion on Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead was one of the Rock and Roll bands that emerged in the United States in the 1960s and influenced not only American music but also the lifestyle of many of their fans, later known as “Deadheads.” The late guitarist and singer Jerry Garcia was an essential part of the group and was praised over the years by many musicians, especially in the United States. Another artist from that generation was the late, legendary Allman Brothers Band guitarist Duane Allman, who had the chance to see Jerry and the band perform live and shared his opinion about them. What was Duane Allman's opinion on Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead "I love the Dead! As for Jerry Garcia, (he) can walk on water, he could do anything any man can ever do. He is a prince, like I said about Eric (Clapton), they're both princes and geniuses in their own right, man. But not so much of geniuses as they can't be some good old cats, you know. If you see him (Jerry), you tell him how much I like him, man." "You tell him the same goes for me, because he is a beaut, man! He is a wonderful good man that cares a lot about you and people like you, man. He is solid, he is something else, man," Duane Allman said in a radio interview in 1970, featured on "Skydog Tales" (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage). The late Allman Brothers guitarist had the chance to meet Jerry Garcia and the band for the first time during the Atlanta Festival in 1969. At the time, concert promoter Murray Silver called Duane to ask if he could rent his sound system for another band that was also part of the festival. When he found out it was for the Californian group, he told him they could use it for free, as long as he introduced him to Jerry. He recalled: "The Dead arrived in Atlanta without their equipmen. I called Duane Allman at home in Macon early on Sunday morning to ask him if I could rent his sound system. He asked me who it was for. When I told him it was for The Dead, he told me that I could have it for free in return for introducing him to Jerry Garcia." "The Brothers brought their equipment to Atlanta and the two bands met for the first time. At the end of The Dead's set, the Allman Brothers joined them onstage. They played a version of 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken' unlike anything that has been heard before or since. A few years later these two bands played before hundreds of thousands at Watkins Glen. But only 2,000 saw them at the Sports Arena on May 10, 1970," Murray Silver said. During that year The Allman Brothers Band was Grateful Dead's opening act on several dates. Duane joined them on stage during many of those shows. Some of the songs he played with them was "Spanish Jam", "Turn On Your Love Light" and "Angi". After Duane's tragic death they continued to perform together over the years. They remained good friends. Bob Weir and Phil Lesh even joined the Allman Brothers during their 40th anniversary show at the Beacon Theatre in 2009. Gregg Allman later covered the Dead song "Black Muddy River" on the album "Southern Blood," which was released posthumously in 2017. Jerry Garcia said he really enjoyed playing with The Allman Brothers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh9SyiQUfg0&pp=ygUaZHVhbmUgYWxsbWFuIGdyYXRlZnVsIGRlYWQ%3D Jerry Garcia was also a fan of The Allman Brothers and really enjoyed playing with them. He saw many similarities between them and the Grateful Dead. "It’s kind of like playing with us the way we were five years ago (laughs). Musically and set-up wise, they’re kind of similar to the way we used to be." "They especially sounded like us when they were the original Allman Brothers. They had two drummers, two guitars, organ and bass. Exactly the instrumentation we had (when drummer Mickey Hart and organist-vocalist Ron ‘Pigpen’ McKernan were in the band). In fact, Dickey and the guys had flashed on our music when we played at a festival in Florida about five or six years ago." "We really inspired them and they’ve patterned a lot of their trip after us. They’re like a younger, Southern version of us in some ways musically. I really enjoy playing with those guys, they’re fun to play with. They’re good," Jerry Garcia said in an interview with Cameron Crowe in 1973. The Allman Brothers paid tribute to Garcia when he died On the night Jerry Garcia died in 1995 at the age of 53, the Allman Brothers Band paid tribute to the guitarist by playing the song "Blue Sky," using the Grateful Dead’s "Franklin’s Tower" riff as the intro. The show was happening at the Jones Beach Amphitheater in Wantagh, NY with the Black Crowes. Dickey Betts stepped up to the microphone and dedicated the show to the late musician. The Allman Brothers Band came to an end in 2014 after Gregg Allman decided to retire from touring. Their final show took place at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Three years later, Gregg sadly passed away at the age of 69 due to complications from liver cancer. The post Duane Allman’s opinion on Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Parents are incredibly accurate when predicting if their child is seriously sick

Parents are incredibly accurate when predicting if their child is seriously sick

Since the dawn of time, it’s been believed that parents, especially mothers, have a mysterious intuition: a deep-seated gut feeling when something is wrong with their child. Interestingly, according to a recent study out of the University of Oulu in Finland, that intuition appears to be real. Parents who believed their child had a serious illness, even before consulting a doctor, were correct 91% of the time. To determine how accurate a parent’s assessment of their child was, administrators gave 36-item questionnaires to parents of 2,375 patients who had been admitted to Oulu University Hospital. They found that more than nine out of 10 parents of seriously ill children knew something was wrong even before taking the assessment. Parents can determine a serious health issue with their kid 91% of the time A child at the hospital. Photo credit: Canva “Parental concern is an important warning sign,” Dr. Hilla Pöyry, a pediatrician, said in a statement. “If a parent is worried about their suddenly ill child’s condition, the child must have the opportunity to be assessed by a doctor. A worried parent should not be left alone to make a remote assessment of their child’s condition.” Researchers believe this study is important given the increasing use of artificial intelligence and digital tools in hospitals. It affirms the idea that a parent’s intuition has value, even in a world dominated by technology. “Our results show that such tools require careful validation, and they do not yet replace the assessment of a healthcare professional,” Pöyry added. “Although a parent may not always be able to describe the child’s symptoms in detail or accurately, they recognise a serious illness very well when asked a simple concern-based question.”  A mom and two kids at the hospital. Photo credit: Canva Why do parents have an intuitive sense of their child’s health? Susan Albers, a psychologist at Cleveland Clinic, said that a mother’s special bond with her child is the result of both nature and nurture. On the nature side, the two share a chemical bond: when a mother spends time with her child, oxytocin is released in the brain. On the nurture side, mothers spend thousands of hours with their child, allowing them to pick up on tiny patterns that others wouldn’t notice. “A mother’s intuition is a very real phenomenon,” Albers said. “It is described as a gut level of awareness of what is happening with your child, whether it is what they need, what they are feeling, or if they are in danger based on no information or explanation.” The findings should give parents confidence that when they think something isn’t right with their child, there’s a good chance they’re correct. It’s also a strong reason to seek a second opinion when a doctor may not agree with a parent’s assessment. The study gives doctors something extra to consider when a parent brings a child into the office. In short, there’s a good chance something really is wrong, even if it isn’t immediately apparent. Marshmallow root is a natural remedy that can help stop coughs quickly

Marshmallow root is a natural remedy that can help stop coughs quickly

There’s nothing more exhausting than having a dry cough that won’t go away. Some viruses, such as RSV, can cause a lingering cough for weeks after the infection is over. Most people try cough suppressants and lozenges to make themselves more comfortable. Still, there’s one ancient remedy most people don’t know about that research suggests can work quickly: marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis). “The natural marshmallow root or plant has been shown to decrease throat irritation and coughing,” said Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell, a family medicine physician and TED Talk speaker, according to The Huffington Post. “The soothing effect comes from the plant’s natural coating, called mucilaginous, which is a sticky gelatin substance that might help reduce a cough.” Marshmallow root. Photo credit: Wikimedia Commons How marshmallow root can help stop coughing However, that doesn’t mean you should pop a few extra-large marshmallows in your mouth or down a few teaspoons of marshmallow ice cream topping, as the woman in the TikTok video below suggests. Companies that make the sweet confection stopped using marshmallow root decades ago. @doctorsood Medical information can sometimes be outdated; wish Marshmellows still had marshmellow root ♬ original sound – DoctorSood, M.D. “Store-bought marshmallows, which contain sugar, water, and gelatin, do not [reduce coughing],” Dr. Sood clarified on TikTok. “But marshmallow root, which has been used since ancient times, does have medicinal uses and can soothe your throat and suppress your cough. This was previously an ingredient in marshmallows but has now been replaced with sugar. The reason it helps is it builds protective coat in your mouth and throat, and there is research to support.” Why marshmallow root is so great at soothing coughs Marshmallow root is effective at soothing a dry, painful cough due to the mucilag, a sap-like substance it produces. When ingested, the mucilage coats the mucosa, or the lining of the body’s inner passages, soothing them like a balm. Multiple studies have found that marshmallow root, when used as a cough syrup or lozenge, provides rapid symptom relief. It has also been shown to reduce cough reflex sensitivity and throat irritation. Marshmallow root. Photo credit: Rillke/Wikimedia Commons There are many different ways to take marshmallow root if you have a cough that won’t go away. You can make marshmallow root tea by using the root as loose-leaf tea, pouring boiling water over it, and letting it steep for 10 minutes. You can also mix marshmallow root powder with water or juice to make a drink. This may be the first time you’ve heard of using marshmallow root to soothe a hacking cough, but its medicinal use dates back to ancient Egypt, where it grew in swamps and bogs. In the 1800s, the French took the marshmallow plant, mixed its sap with rose water and egg white meringue, and dropped the mixture into candy molds. This marked the birth of the marshmallow you love and cook over campfires today. Over the years, marshmallows became increasingly popular, so manufacturers ditched the root sap in favor of gelatin and corn syrup, which were more readily available. Marshmallow root is a great example of how, even as scientific advancements have drastically changed how people approach health, some ancient remedies have stood the test of time. Obese cat amasses fan club on his weight loss journey as he cleverly tries to avoid working out

Obese cat amasses fan club on his weight loss journey as he cleverly tries to avoid working out

Working out isn’t always fun, but sometimes what’s good for you isn’t fun. An orange and white tabby cat named Mr. Kitty is realizing that all of those cat treats are a lifetime on the hips. So many things are tasty going down, but they’re not so great when working to get the pounds off. Mr. Kitty received the news that he had to not only go on a diet but also participate in an exercise regimen. His owner has been sharing his weight loss journey on her Instagram page, The Mr. Kitty Show. His less-than-stellar attitude about exercise has garnered him a fan club. There’s nothing like a sassy cat being forced to work out to make cat lovers cheer. A chubby cat sits near a scale. Photo credit: Canva Mr. Kitty does not appear amused. The sassy cat does everything in his power to avoid working out. He must’ve been taking dieting tips from Garfield, because he’s a whopping 30 pounds. On the cat chonk chart, Mr. Kitty would be an “OH, LAWD HE COMIN.‘” People can find “The Chonk Chart” in cheeky veterinary offices. It shows cats’ weights, ranging from “A Fine Boi” (average weight) to “A Heckin’ Chonker” (overweight but not obese). On the far end of the chart is Mr. Kitty’s status. @christalluster #readingfunnytweets #reactionvids #catvids ♬ original sound – Christal Luster Some wonder how a cat gets to Mr. Kitty’s size. It’s unclear what led to his excessive weight. Often, this level of weight gain is caused by overfeeding and under-exercising. According to PetMD, “All cat breeds can become obese. Middle-aged (8–12 years old), spayed or neutered, indoor-only or primarily indoor cats tend to be more at risk for becoming obese cats.” View this post on Instagram The average weight of a healthy adult cat is between seven and 12 pounds, depending on whether the cat has a small or large frame, according to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. So, Mr. Kitty is well outside of the normal weight range, and as his owner drags him to the kitty cat gym regularly, he wants her to know just how unhappy he is. Aside from giving his human the death stare while walking on the treadmill, he also protests the exercise equipment. Mr. Kitty was originally placed on a treadmill with a plastic display piece in front. By resting his front paws on the plastic piece, only his back legs had to walk. His humans moved him to a different treadmill to stop him from cheating on his weight loss journey. View this post on Instagram Instead, he decided not to walk at all. Mr. Kitty would park his chonkin’ self on the treadmill and wait for it to roll him all the way to the edge so he could try to escape burning calories. The people in the cat gym had to stack pool noodles at the back of the machine to force Mr. Kitty to work out. All the hard work has started to pay off, whether this cat wanted to participate or not. Mr. Kitty has dropped to 20 pounds, and his fan club couldn’t be prouder. View this post on Instagram One person says, “Hi Mr. Kitty! Congratulations on your weight loss journey! You look great!” “Get it Mr Kitty! Mr Kitty looks strong and confident,” another cheers. Someone else writes, “Mr. Kitty I think you look adorable but I’m betting your joints are thankful for the weight loss! Keep going, king!” This person feels Mr. Kitty’s pain, writing, “I understand this so well… I would go through the same length not to walk on a treadmill. Mr kitty understands us chubby ones.” View this post on Instagram According to some commenters, Mr. Kitty is perfectly happy working out at the holistic vet. He was just a cat doing cat things, finding cheat codes to not exercise because cats do what they want, when they want, and the days he tried to escape were the days he didn’t feel like exercising. Either way, Mr. Kitty’s progress has been amazing, and his little joints likely feel so much better.
