Supreme Court rules against Trump on deportations under Alien Enemies Act; Alito and Thomas dissent

The U.S. Supreme Court granted a temporary motion on Friday to pause deportations under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 based on the lack of due process given to migrants. The 7-2 ruling was issued unsigned, but Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas publicly dissented from the majority. Alito dissented on the basis that the court had 'no authority to issue any relief' so early in the litigation process. The lawsuit was filed by a group of Venezuelans from North Texas who were accused by the government of being gang members and thereby eligible for deportation without due process. The court rejected a motion from the Trump administration to allow them to continue the deportation proceedings, and ruled that the government had not given the migrants the due process to challenge the deportations. The ruling cited the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, where the administration said they had no power to return the man, despite admitting that his deportation was due to a clerical error. The Supreme Court said that “the detainees’ interests at stake are accordingly particularly weighty," given that the Trump administration had been “unable to provide for the return of an individual deported in error to a prison in El Salvador.”Alito dissented on the basis that the court had "no authority to issue any relief" so early in the litigation process. Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union argue that the detained migrants were not notified by the government in a language that they understand and were not notified of their rights, nor given enough time to exercise their rights. The Supreme Court had unanimously ruled in April that migrants needed to be allowed due process to challenge deportation proceedings. RELATED: Trump lashes out at Supreme Court for blocking deportations Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images Defenders of the use of the 1798 law say that the scale of the millions of deportations needed to alleviate the immigration crisis is so great that due process cannot be granted to each migrant to be deported. Critics of the administration say due process is necessary to protect against mistaken deportations, as well as to allow suspects to challenge the designation and prove their innocence. When will Apple release iOS 18.6?

When will Apple release iOS 18.6?

With iOS 18.5 having just been released, you might be wondering what you can do if you're experiencing any bugs. While it's possible that Apple might seed an iOS 18.5.1 update soon, the safest bet is to wait for iOS 18.6. However, this isn't a regular software update. After all, by the time iOS 18.6 gets a release date, Apple will already be preparing to roll out iOS 19. Here's everything you need to know about iOS 18.6, and when to expect a proper release date. Apple's iOS x.6 updates If you take into consideration the latest x.6 updates, here's when we expect iOS 18.6 to land: iOS 17.6: July 29, 2024 iOS 16.6: July 24, 2023 iOS 15.6: July 20, 2022 Usually, these software updates bring one or two new features or upgrades, but focus primarily on bug fixes and security patches. Last year, Apple seeded iOS 17.6 after the WWDC 2024 keynote. However, with iOS 16.6 and iOS 15.6, the company seeded them a few weeks after iOS 16.5/15.5 in May. That said, the first beta could arrive any time from next week to after the WWDC keynote on June 10. Why this update matters While most iPhone users are already eager for the first iOS 19 beta, iOS 18.6 will be especially important if Apple drops support for any of the current iPhone models with this new software update. So far, rumors suggest Apple might continue to offer iOS 19 on all iPhones that support iOS 18. However, we can't say the same about the iPad. With that in mind, this update ensures that these devices continue to receive the latest security patches and bug fixes, even if they won't support the big iOS 19 update expected later this fall. That said, if the company follows the trend, we could also see iOS 18.7 in the second half of the year. BGR will let you know once Apple seeds the first iOS 18.6 beta.
