Kristen Craft brings fresh fundraising strategy to the Foundation Stage at TechCrunch All Stage

Raising in 2025 doesn’t look anything like it did in 2021 — and that’s exactly the point. At TechCrunch All Stage on July 15 at Boston’s SoWa Power Station, Kristen Craft, Head of Business Development at Fidelity Private Shares, will lead a roundtable session titled “It’s Not 2021 Anymore. Navigating the 2025 VC Landscape,” happening […]

Parents Beat Groomers 6-3

It should have been a 9-0 ruling, but six Supreme Court justices ruled on Friday that parents do have the right to opt their children out of sex-cult indoctrination in schools.

Tens of Thousands of “New Voters” Registered to Vote for Mamdani

These numbers are not natural. The New York Times has a shallow cheerleading article about where Zohram Mamdani’s votes came from. As I already pointed out, Mamdani benefited from low turnout below 30% and won the vote of some 5% of New Yorkers. But the Times has some interesting figures in this chart. Mr. Mamdani’s campaign had focused on …

Country Music Fans Weigh In With Latest Country Artists & Bands They’ve Discovered

It’s always fun to discover a new artist or band. As a huge fan of music myself, that’s one of my personal favorite aspects of listening to music: the discovery. The only thing arguably better than finding a really talented new act is sharing that new band or artist with your close friends or family. Nothing hits harder than when you say: “Hey, check this song out. I think you’ll like it.” And getting a message back that reads something like: “Love it! I just added it to my playlist.” Man, I got goosebumps just thinking about that. Even being on the receiving end of a freshly discovered musical act can be riveting. Which brings us to the question that we here at Whiskey Riff asked country music fans not too long ago. We took to social media to pose the question: Who’s the latest artist you’ve discovered? Who’s the latest artist you’ve discovered? — Whiskey Riff (@WhiskeyRiff) June 26, 2025 Now we painted with a broad stroke with that question, but the country music fans that replied didn’t disappoint. I’d suggest getting out your notepad (or notes page, let’s be real) and jotting some of these artists down so you can check them out. Some of them would realistically be described as new, while others might instead fall underneath the new-to-you category. Then you’ve got oldies that you might have missed out on the first time around. All in all, it’s a list that’s chock full of talent: “Clay Street Unit.” “Stephen Wilson Jr. is an amazing talent and must listen.” “The Creekers.” “Treaty Oak Revival.” “The Droptines… can’t stop listening either.” “Ole 60.” “J.R. Carroll. He has some great music.” “Watch out for Tyler Dodson.” “The Jack Wharff Band.” “Shane Profitt.” “Ed Bruce, the hoss who wrote ‘Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys.'” “Benjamin Tod.” “Larry Fleet.” “Whitey Morgan and the 78s.” “Ian Munsick.” “Charley Crockett.” “Eric Bolander – the whole album ‘The Wind’ is a must listen.” “Ben Chapman.” “Presley Haile.” “Zach Top… way late to the party apparently.” Yes, you are. But that’s okay! It’s never too late to discover some new music by new (to you) artists. And hey, you could put together one heck of a playlist by going through the above list and throwing in one or two song from each name that popped up. Actually, I think I might take the rest of the day and do just that. And hey… remember that thing I mentioned earlier about offering up and/or being on the receiving end of new music? This whole story fulfilled both of those scenarios. Some social media users threw out some of their newly acquired favorites, and you (the reader) have the pleasure of taking all of the suggestions into account and potentially finding a new band or artist yourself. One of the actual perks of the online culture, eh? Finding and sharing new music? Guess that makes up for all of the toxicity that exists elsewhere online… or at the very least makes all of that easier to deal with. The post Country Music Fans Weigh In With Latest Country Artists & Bands They’ve Discovered first appeared on Whiskey Riff.

Treaty Oak Revival’s Bass Player, Andrew Carey, Announces His Departure From The Band: “The Road Has Taken Its Toll”

The end of an era. For the last five years, Treaty Oak Revival’s bass player, Andrew Carey, has been an integral part of the band’s electric stage presence. The Bassist from Space not only keeps the rhythm rocking on his instrument but is always at the front of the stage, hyping up the crowd, keeping the beers flowing, and running around on stage to keep his energy high throughout every set. But sometimes being on the road while having a young family is not the easiest task, and after five years as the band’s bass player, Andrew Carey is moving on to his next chapter. Last night, Carey took to social media to share the following message: “It’s with a heavy heart that I share this news. After five incredible years of playing and sharing unforgettable moments with you, I must step away from Treaty Oak Revival.  Touring and rocking a little too hard has done a number on my back, body and mind. I want to express my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support, enthusiasm, and kindness throughout this journey. You’ve been more than just fans; you’ve been a family to me. The memories we’ve created together will always hold a special place in my heart.  Although this chapter is ending, I’m hopeful for what the future holds, and hope to stay connected with you in any way I can. Thank you for everything.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Andrew Carey (@bassist_from_space) Carey expands his thoughts in the caption of the post, adding: “The road has taken its toll, and I would really like to be able to continue playing music and being the best dad and husband that I can be for as long as I possibly can. I will still be on the upcoming TOR record, but I need to take some time off to heal. Hopefully, then I will be able to do more new and exciting musical work like recording, writing and engineering songs and also meet more amazing people. Our fans and the people on the TOR team mean everything to me and my family. Treaty Oak Revival will always be the best band in the world!” While Carey posted this decision from his personal social media accounts, it was also shared on the Treaty Oak Revival account to notify fans of the change. It’s clear from their words that it was not an easy choice, and it was done with a heavy heart. “Thank you for 5 years of amazing shows, music, and memories. We love you and wish you the best.”  Before joining Treaty Oak Revival, Carey was a member of a psych-rock outfit in Abilene, Texas. The group called Always Lost is listed as Carey’s solo project, according to his social media bios. Always Lost is described as a band that is “embracing the DIY ethos with love songs and a rebel spirit infused with the gusto of West Texas dust.” While this is a heartbreaking way to end the era with Treaty Oak Revival as the band is in their prime, you have to respect Carey for looking out for himself first and doing what he needs to do to stay a present father. I doubt this is the last we will hear from Andrew Carey. Take care of yourself, brother, and we wish you the best on your next adventure. The post Treaty Oak Revival’s Bass Player, Andrew Carey, Announces His Departure From The Band: “The Road Has Taken Its Toll” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.

Emmylou Harris Is So Unintentionally Hilarious That She Could Have Been A Comedian

Emmylou Harris Is So Unintentionally Hilarious That She Could Have Been A Comedian

I believe Emmylou Harris could have taken on an entirely different profession. When most people think of country legend Emmylou Harris, they picture just that: a country music icon. With her fourteen Grammy awards and three Country Music Association (CMA) awards, she makes her influence undeniable in the country music space. However, I think she deserves to be recognized for something else as well— her impeccable comedic timing and dry wit. If you aren’t familiar with Emmylou Harris…I must ask— have you been living on a different planet? Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, she is widely known for her country hits like “Boulder to Birmingham” and “Red Dirt Girl”. She’s also largely credited for shaking up the country genre in the 1970s, being appraised as one of the driving forces behind the popularity of the country-rock fusion genre. Of course, I can’t forget to mention the many iconic collaborations she has been a part of in her career. Some of my favorites being her Trio album with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt and her contribution in the live rendition of “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” with Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Sheryl Crow, Eric Church, George Strait, Dave Matthews, Chris Stapleton, Derek Trucks, Kris Kristofferson, and The Avett Brothers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3JTs1xhUeU While going down an Emmylou rabbit hole, rewatching her interviews and live performances, I couldn’t help but notice how unintentionally hilarious she truly was. I was surprised more people weren’t pointing out her quick wit. Being an artist comes with the ability to think outside the box and come up with quick creative responses to new situations, so it doesn’t surprise me that she would be a natural at comedic timing, but I do think it’s an interesting thing to point out. Emmylou has even stated in an interview that before seriously considering a career in music, she wanted to be an actress. She even went to school for it on a drama scholarship. Perhaps this is the explanation for her outstanding moments of improvisation. One clip I found was from one of her live performances with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt featured on the Dolly show. She is pictured sitting in the front row of the audience shoveling popcorn into her mouth. When Dolly Parton spots Emmylou and Linda in the audience she playfully prompts them with the question,  “What are you doing in the audience?”  Emmylou responds quickly with,  “It’s the only way we can get anything to eat”.  Dolly erupts with laughter, and I can’t deny I had a chuckle as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGn1lsUIdlw Another clip I found was from a live performance in 2023 at the Earl Scruggs Fest. While in the middle of playing “Here I Am”, she forgets the first lyric of the second verse but recovers quickly with a witty remark. She says: “Okay I’m gonna… I forgot that line, but I wrote the song so I’m gonna do it again”. This cues some giggles and cheers from the crowd. What an iconic comeback.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t7F92gRk7c Lastly, my favorite moments I found were from a 2019 panel interview with Emmylou and The Hot Band for the County Music Hall of Fame. In the interview she talks about her experiences with her band and recounts moments in her music career. While a fantastic panel, there are some hilarious moments that are hard to ignore, like when she starts talking about her bandmates and their time recording and performing music together. She zeros in on the obvious chemistry the group had:  “I just have to say that we had so much fun… it should have been illegal, and maybe some of it was…”  Whatever they were doing on those tour buses and in those recording studios, I’m sure they had a blast. I’m also glad no one got arrested so the world got to hear the “Pieces In The Sky” album. I don’t think I could live without it.   Another great moment from this panel was when Emmylou talked about the recording process. She explains that occasionally the band could record a song in one take, while other times there needed to be some post-production manipulation. She acknowledges how that is okay, and oftentimes is the case. Not everything comes easy, but as long as there is some solid foundation to work with, something good can be made from it. She then quotes her musician friend John Sterling with perfect comedic timing, stating,  “You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t.” May I just say, what a quote to live by. The tone in which she says this makes me roll over laughing, she is just too funny. While always finding ways to sneak in bits of her humor in interviews and performances, I can definitively say I’m grateful she chose to prioritize her career in music over one in acting or comedy— even though it’s clear she has the chops and wit for it. Next time you come across a video of Emmylou, pay closer attention, and you may be able to catch new moments where her comedic charm shines. The post Emmylou Harris Is So Unintentionally Hilarious That She Could Have Been A Comedian first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
