Trump Reiterates Desire for Greenland, Disclaims Use of Force at Davos

President Donald Trump touted the economic achievements of his second term, questioned the strength of NATO without American support, and promised that he has no interest in taking Greenland by force during an hour-long speech at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday.  Trump, who was greeted with a red carpet upon arrival in Davos, said his administration “inherited a mess” from President Joe Biden before stating that “grocery prices, energy prices, airfares, mortgage rates, rent and car payments are all coming down.”  Trump claimed that NATO is an unreliable partner that failed to pay its bills before Trump won reelection.  “We pay for NATO,” Trump told a packed house in Davos. “We paid for many years, until I came along, in my opinion 100 percent of NATO, because they weren’t paying their bills. And all we’re asking for is to get Greenland, including right, title, and ownership.” To the relief of many, Trump then ruled out using military force to acquire Greenland. “I won’t use force,” Trump said. “All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland.” Trump bemoaned the failure of President Harry Truman to acquire Greenland in the years following the Second World War. Trump said it costs Denmark “hundreds of millions a year to run it” and that the U.S. needs the land mass for national and international security.  “That can create a power that will make it impossible for the bad guys to do anything against the perceived good ones,” he said. “It’s a great block for Europe.” Trump criticized prior U.S. administrations and governments across Europe for overspending and permitting unfettered immigration to change their demographic makeups: “It became conventional wisdom in Washington and European capitals that the only way to grow a modern Western economy was through ever-increasing government spending, unchecked mass migration, and endless foreign imports.”  Trump warned that Europe is “not heading in the right direction” and added that “certain places in Europe are not even recognizable, frankly, anymore.” Speaking of our northern neighbor, Trump said Canada “should be grateful” for the support it receives from the U.S. and instructed Prime Minister Mark Carney to “remember that the next time you make your statements.”  Trump also teased France’s President Emmanuel Macron, who addressed Davos in aviator sunglasses after a recent operation on his eyes. “I watched him yesterday with those beautiful sunglasses,” Trump said as the crowd laughed. “What the hell happened?” Less than a month after the capture of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, Trump said the U.S. will begin selling 50 million barrels of oil and promised that the South American country is “going to make more money than they have in a long time.” The post Trump Reiterates Desire for Greenland, Disclaims Use of Force at Davos appeared first on The American Conservative.

Trump floats 'Board of Peace' to replace UN, signals major global power shift

President Donald Trump has suggested his proposed "Board of Peace" in Gaza could replace the U.N., underscoring what one national security analyst has described as a revision of the "existing international order." Asked Tuesday whether he envisioned the new body supplanting the U.N., Trump replied, "It might." Speaking at a White House press conference, the president also told reporters the U.N. has consistently failed to fulfill its mission...

What is Trump's 'Board of Peace' and who has joined so far?

U.S. President Donald Trump has invited dozens of world leaders to join his Board of Peace initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts but diplomats say it could harm the work of the United Nations. While some traditional allies of the U.S. have responded cautiously, and in a few cases have rejected Trump's offer, others including nations that have long had strained ties with Washington such as Belarus have accepted...

A look at Trump's Board of Peace and who has been invited

The Board of Peace led by U.S. President Donald Trump was originally envisioned as a small group of world leaders overseeing the Gaza ceasefire plan. Since then, the Trump administration's ambitions have ballooned into a more sprawling concept, with Trump extending invitations to dozens of nations and hinting the board will soon broker global conflicts, like a pseudo-U.N. Security Council. Trump is headed for the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, where more details are expected to emerge. Ahead of Davos, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that he had agreed to join the board, despite his previous criticism of the board's committee overseeing the Gaza ceasefire...

From the NFL sidelines to a US Senate race: Michele Tafoya's new play

Former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya launched her campaign for the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, hoping to win the Republican nomination for the Minnesota seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Tina Smith. "For years, I covered the biggest football games in America," Tafoya said in a video posted on social media, in which she stands on a snowy football field. "I walked the sidelines when the pressure was mounting and the stakes were the highest. That job taught me about more than football. It taught me about how leadership really works. When leaders are prepared and accountable, teams succeed. When they aren't, people pay the price."...

Trump's Abortion Strategy? Do Nothing. But His Base Has Other Plans.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump made a suggestion that landed on a key part of his far-right coalition like a sucker punch. Referring to negotiations over the Affordable Care Act, he urged House Republicans to be "a little bit flexible" on the Hyde Amendment, which for 50 years has banned the use of federal funds for abortion. Republicans had allowed ACA subsidies to expire in December, causing insurance premiums to skyrocket for millions of Americans just in time for an election-year backlash. Now, Trump was pushing them to cut a deal with Democrats to resurrect the subsidies, even if it meant compromising on a bedrock conservative principle: no taxpayer support for abortion...
