Biden’s Measure for Measure: Retribution for Lying About Trump

I have written often about Joe Biden’s decades upon decades of public lies. So has everyone else who has a computer, a laptop, a tablet, a smartphone, an IBM Selectric typewriter, a pen, a pencil, or a crayon. Lies and lies and lies. Serious lies. Interesting lies. Fanciful lies. Dramatic lies. Basic lies.  The guy is, to borrow an aphorism, a lying dog-faced pony soldier. The time he risked his life, amid gunfire in Afghanistan, to confer a medal on a brave soldier. The time he went to jail for Black freedom, arrested in the streets of Soweto for Mandela in South Africa, at lunch counters in America, marching, boycotting, and sitting-in. The uncle who got eaten by cannibals. The children who liked to rub the gold hair on his legs. The bridge he saw collapse in Pittsburgh. The false claim that he visited the Pittsburgh temple that was attacked by a Jew-hating terrorist. Saying that the Hunter laptop was Russian disinformation. His claim that he graduated toward the top of his law school class when he graduated a miserably low 76th out of 85. Or that he drove an 18-wheeler. Or that his house almost burned down, when it was only a kitchen fire. The lie that, as vice president, he met with students who survived the Parkland school massacre, an impossibility since he was out of office then; it was President Donald Trump who met in the White House with parents of survivors. Biden’s lie that he was at Ground Zero the very next day after 9/11. It goes on and on and on, the Energizer Bunny of lying. He was caught plagiarizing in law school. There was his classic plagiarism of the biographical speech by former British Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock, where Biden literally repeated virtually every key claim and sentence that Kinnock said describing his life. The same biography. If Biden had been telling the truth — ROTFL! — it would have meant that we all are living in two universes, two planes of consciousness, unlocking a door with the key of imagination, beyond which is another dimension — a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind, moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. Yes, in brief, Biden may actually have found the entrance to Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone. And now, apparently having misplaced that key, he is having a heck of a time trying to find the egress. It goes on and on, but here’s the thing — a spiritual and even religious manifestation: Shakespeare called it “Measure for Measure.” The Talmud calls it “Middah k’negged Middah” (same meaning). Other cultures call it “karma.” It describes a phenomenon by which the universe sets itself straight and better in balance (and more religious people would say by the direction of G-d). It is when someone simply “gets his” or hers. In many ways, Biden’s biggest lie — because it was the most consequential and the one he actually leveraged to the presidency — was when he told America that he had no plans or interest whatsoever to run for president, no desire to go through all that. But then he heard President Trump tell reporters after the complex incident at Charlottesville that White Supremacists and Nazis are fine people. By golly, Biden heard it that day, and that shock-jolted him into running. From Day One, President Trump’s supporters played back that press conference a zillion times to anyone who would watch or listen with an open mind to evidence the viciousness of the lie. It had been a protest over tearing down a monument to General Robert E. Lee, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Lee was the single most significant military figure of the Confederacy. There are monuments to him throughout the South. He is central in the carving at Stone Mountain, Georgia. There is a university named for Washington and Lee. He is a significant historic figure in Virginia. On the other hand, many regard him as having been an embodiment of evil for leading the fight to preserve Dixie, where slavery was a vile part of the society. As a result, there was a public demonstration. Many wanted the Lee statue torn down; their cause was just. Many wanted Lee’s monument preserved; their cause also was just. And many others were there to unite all the haters on the American extreme-hate White Supremacist Nazi right that could be gathered; their cause was despicable. The media wanted President Trump to condemn every conservative present. However, he would not be cowed. Rather, President Trump spoke the truth: there were “very fine people on both sides.” And he separately condemned the neo-Nazis and their ilk. Immediately, the Big Lie was spread by the leftist mainstream media that Trump had called Nazis very fine people. It was a Big Lie, worthy of actual Nazis like Julius Streicher. Finally, after too many years, even Snopes finally has debunked that lie about President Trump and Charlottesville for once and for all. Trump never said it, never praised Nazis or White Supremacists — rather, condemned them — but Biden told America that he personally had seen and heard Trump say it, and that alone was the reason he decided to run for president. And so we come to the glorious karma: In Biden’s mind, he truly believes he still is 100 percent on the ball. He knows he had a bad debate night, even though Dr. Jill, Ed.D., exulted that he “answered all the questions,” but he truly believes he still has the right stuff. Even as everyone around him tells him to leave, practically reading to him the Dr. Seuss classic “Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now!” he won’t go. They are begging him to go by foot, to go by cow, to go on skates, go on skis, go by hat, go by stilts, go by fish, go by lion’s tail, go by mail — just please go now. And he just won’t go. The gorgeous karma in all this is that, because he truly cannot comprehend why everyone around him is extrapolating from one public appearance in front of two media questioners that he is all washed-up, he is experiencing exactly what he has done to Trump for three years. In Biden’s mind, it is becoming a plot, a conspiracy, and everyone unfairly is starting to buy into the Big Lie about him, saying he has Parkinson’s when maybe he doesn’t, saying he is in early senility when he believes he is not. And yet, everyone now is saying it, writing it, reading it. In his mind, he is frustrated beyond words because, in his mind, they all are promoting a falsehood that has no basis in reality. And yet he can’t stop the gossip and evil talk. To him, it is the Big Lie that cannot be set straight, and Snopes won’t help him here either. He makes a strong teleprompter speech the next day, but it won’t stop. He interviews with George Stephanopoulos and goes home, feeling he “crushed” it, and the next day even more Democrats say he must go. Even Stephanopoulos himself, as the Clinton-has-beens start laying the framework for a “Draft Hillary” tent revival movement. Soon Biden will speak at NATO and at the Democrat National Convention. Everyone will feel duty-bound to stand and cheer. Netanyahu will come to Washington, and even though Biden wanted to boycott the visit, he now will feel obligated to meet Bibi so that the Israeli prime minister can tell the media, “I just met with President Biden, and he is sharper than ever, sharp as a knife.” Of course, Netanyahu will say that. Like, what else would he say? — “I just met with President Biden, asking for more support for Israel, and I must say I was shocked. He is gone, like Alice in ‘The Honeymooners,’ zip to the moon. Total schmendrick. I am sorry to say he has deteriorated into a complete meshuggeneh.” Bibi can’t say that. He needs to be good with Biden — or Dr. Jill, Ed.D. — for the next four months. Biden will feel validated: “See? Everyone says I’ve still got it!” … until he reads the next week’s papers, perhaps the next day’s. He will look to Dr. Jill, Ed.D., and she will assure him: “You were great, hon. You used all the vowels, even most of the consonants!” And so Uncle Joe will wander in a Twilight Zone of his making, the retribution that has awaited him for propagating one Big Lie too many. Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Barack Obama, and the Death of Stalin

Seems like everybody out there has his or her own assessment of what’s actually happening with respect to the collapse of Joe Biden’s presidency and reelection hopes. I’ll give you mine in a moment. But before I do, a recommendation: If you’ve never seen The Death of Stalin, the satirical 2017 thriller directed by Armando Iannucci starring Steve Buscemi, Jeffrey Tambor, and Simon Russell Beale about the aftermath of the Soviet dictator’s demise, now would be a good time to remedy that. The movie is bitingly hilarious, which is reason enough to give it a watch, but it’s also a fairly insightful study into the behavioral dynamics of power-mad psychotics in high political positions. There’s a little foul language in this clip, but I’m offering it up by way of setting up the rest of the column… This scene depicts the demise of one Lavrentiy Beria (played by Beale), who was Joseph Stalin’s chief murderer as head of the NKVD. Buscemi plays Nikita Khrushchev, who ran the coup to knock out Beria and ultimately took power as the next dictator in the USSR. Why talk about all this? Well, for one reason, the Democrat Party at its highest levels functions more than a little bit like the collection of psychopaths that was the Soviet Politburo’s inner circle. And what governs organizations like that isn’t intelligence, it isn’t virtue, it isn’t managerial competence. It isn’t merit of any kind. Getting ahead in organizations like that is chiefly, if not solely, a function of ambition. It’s about a will to power. It’s about being willing to do the things the others aren’t willing to do. That alone is the reason Stalin ended up as Vladimir Lenin’s successor instead of Leon Trotsky, who everybody thought was the smarter and more ideologically sound choice. Stalin had none of Trotsky’s virtues but his was a level of ruthlessness nobody in Lenin’s inner circle could match. I’ve written an entire book about all the awful things Barack Obama has done to this country, but one of the most easily identifiable lessons in Racism, Revenge and Ruin: It’s All Obama is that he got where he is because he was more ruthless — more willing to do the things nobody else was willing to do — than anybody else in American politics. That’s why Obama still runs the Democrat Party eight years after the end of his presidency. Nobody in that party has the stones to cross him. Remember, it was Obama and his team who selected Biden as the 2020 Democrat presidential nominee. It wasn’t the party’s voters. They showed in those early primaries they didn’t want anything to do with him. They also showed they didn’t want anything to do with Kamala Harris, either. None of that mattered, though — Team Obama bought off Bernie Sanders with a promise that most of his communist ideological platform would show through in a Biden administration (because Obama and Sanders are hardly opponents when it comes to ideology), and they similarly cut deals with the other major candidates and stood them down. What was left was Biden, the most plausible puppet for the Obama regime, and Harris, who was Obama’s earliest choice to be his successor in the 2020 cycle before she crashed and burned on her own. So where are we now? It seems pretty obvious that Obama, despite his public show of support for Biden, is open to the idea of moving on. It also seems obvious that the Democrats’ donors and boots-on-the-ground folks are up in arms about the pretty obvious fact that Biden 2024 is a loser of a campaign. And yet most of the official Politburo types within that party have not come forth to oppose Biden. He meanwhile is doing things like calling into Morning Joe and trashing the “elites” in his own party and challenging them to go against him at the Democrats’ convention… Who’s he talking about? Obviously it’s Obama. Biden, it turns out, might be an even more obnoxious egomaniac than Obama is, and the fact that he’s feeling his old boss’ support slipping away is firing what neurons he has left. The upshot of this is, as I’ve written a few times lately, that Joe Biden does not appear likely to go gentle into that good night. The people around him, and most notably Jill and Hunter Biden, who know a great deal about how to be enablers in service to their own selfish interests, are all fully invested in propping up this failing enterprise in hopes — Hitler-in-the-bunker-style — that some magical occurrence will reverse their fortunes. Jill Biden is a cross between Edith Wilson and Lady MacBeth; you aren’t getting a patriotic and selfless move out of her. This is somewhat of an aside, but it’s instructive. Donald Trump held a rally Tuesday night on the golf course at Doral, and in front of a crowd estimated to be as large as 45,000 people. Trump took up a challenge of playing 18 holes of golf Biden issued at the debate by offering to spot Biden “10 strokes a side,” or 20 strokes over 18 holes, with a million dollars to the charity of his choice if Biden were to win. Trump offered to have Doral host the match and he said it would likely be one of the most-watched TV events of the year. This was Team Biden’s response: Our response to Trump challenging President Biden to a golf match at his deranged rally tonight pic.twitter.com/9j4AcGhZy1 — Biden-Harris HQ (@BidenHQ) July 10, 2024 Forget about whether this is an effective method of chickening out of a challenge Biden himself had issued. It’s the ferocity of the statement, and the utter delusion behind it, that stands out here. Which means that unless things get worse in a way that makes Biden even less sellable than he is now, and yes, things can always get worse, you’re not going to convince Biden to just go away. Which is why I’m bringing up The Death of Stalin, and why the Dems are so, to use the common vernacular, screwed at present. It’s so crystal clear what the solution for them is. The problem is that the solution is a bad one. Absolutely rotten. And imposed on them by Obama’s own bad judgement. At Doral on Tuesday night, Trump mocked Biden by saying that the one good decision he made was to have Harris as his vice president because “she’s a hell of an insurance policy.” Harris is a lot less sellable than Biden, or at least that’s been the common understanding; the more senile and decrepit he becomes, the less true that may be. We’re finding out why. Because if Kamala Harris was any good as a politician, if she had any chops at all, she’d be Khrushchev in this version of the coup among power-mad psychopaths. She’d round up the members of the Biden cabinet and cut deals with them to keep their jobs or get better ones for the remainder of this term and perhaps into the next one, in return for their assent to either a forced Biden resignation or a 25th Amendment succession. That takes two-thirds of the Cabinet, as you know. Make one of them the VP, shift a couple of others into jobs vacated by Cabinet members who won’t go along, and so on, until you get that two-thirds majority, and then go to Biden with an ultimatum: either resign the office, or we hold the vote in an hour’s time and you’re out — we know the House of Representatives will uphold the Cabinet vote because the Republicans are all in, and if we can get the Cabinet, we can get a suitable number of Democrats to go along with the move. I’m not saying this would be particularly good for the country. I’m saying this is the obvious play Harris should be making. She’s already demonstrated that she isn’t going to get anywhere trying to run for president as a non-incumbent. That was a lead balloon when she tried it. If she’s going to have a political future, it has to be as an incumbent president, or at least as an acting president, with the entire political-media complex apparatus gaslighting the public into the idea she’s underrated and quietly brilliant as a political figure. And if she were to run a successful coup d’etat within the Biden administration, that might not actually be a lie. And right now, the leadership vacuum growing in the Democrat Party — which Obama can’t fill because he can’t step in and run — is such that anybody who seizes power will be seen as a hero. Were Harris to play the game of thrones and win, the party and its propaganda arms in the media would hail her as saving the country from Biden’s decline and Trump’s … whatever their chosen accusations would be. But here’s the thing: so far, there is absolutely zero indication that Kamala Harris has either the chutzpah or the brains to pull off a stunt like that. And Biden, who doesn’t know much anymore, does know this. So it seems clear that the Democrats are fated to circle the drain for a good while longer. And it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of psychopaths. READ MORE: The Fall of Biden Portends Real Danger Kamala v. Biden Says He’s Running. Democrats Get in Line.

WASHINGTON — Joe Biden has made it clear that despite his dismal, embarrassing, very faltering debate performance last month, he’s running. The president may not be able to finish two sentences without stumbling or needing cue cards, but Scranton Joe is not going down without a fight. He told fellow Democrats as much in a letter Monday morning. The 81-year-old doesn’t care if voters think that he is too frail to hold the office. He is the president, and no one can make him bow out unless he wants to. Over the weekend, there was a movement among some Democrats to push him out of the race. A handful of Democrats, such as Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., signaled that Biden should bow out, but by Tuesday morning, Nadler pledged fealty to the one Democrat most likely to lose to Donald Trump. Few Democrats have the stomach to risk being the party’s scapegoats if Biden loses. The White House press corps is getting sick of being played — so there was an open mini-rebellion during Monday’s news briefing. CBS News reporter Ed O’Keefe challenged press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre for answering questions about the president’s health so obliquely that the issue was allowed “to fester.” KJP berated the veteran journalist for asking about the identity of a Parkinson’s specialist who treated the president. But by Tuesday, the fester appeared to have scabbed over. For the record, I believe it when the administration denies Biden has shown signs of Parkinson’s. I think Biden has cognitive problems. Of course, I’m no doctor. I’m just someone who, like many readers, has seen loved ones battle cognitive decline. It is painful to watch. Now that House Democrats know they can’t push Biden off the stage, they can only play along. They’re in the same shoes as Republicans who thought a ticket headed by Trump would doom the GOP. They’re fellow hostages. “It’s clear that he’s up for the job,” Rep. Troy Carter, D-La., told CNN after Democrats huddled together. “The president had a bad debate,” Carter added, but he likes the Biden record and doesn’t believe in judging a man by one bad night. For once, Trump has remained subdued. He knows voters cannot unsee what they have seen. Debate video clips speak louder than Trump tweets. Once NATO decamps, expect the White House to go into the same cover-up mode we saw Monday when Biden called into MSNBC’s Morning Joe show. There was no video of Biden — so you couldn’t tell if he was slack-jawed, staring aimlessly, or reading certain staff-supplied quotes. The “Morning Joe” segment lasted some 18 minutes — and it was at 9 a.m. Eastern — so, unlike the debate, not too long or too late. Soon the president of the United States will not be called to talk at length extemporaneously. He’s not up to it. Until this month, the White House was able to squelch or somewhat discredit reporting on Biden’s cognitive decline. When the Wall Street Journal ran a piece in June under the headline, “Behind Closed Doors, Biden Shows Signs of Slipping,” Biden loyalists quickly pounced on the piece. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough was among the faithful who scoffed at the notion that Biden was not sharp as a tack. During Tuesday’s briefing, KJP returned to the claim that Biden just had a bad night. Nobody believes that. Contact Review-Journal Washington columnist Debra J. Saunders at dsaunders@reviewjournal.com. Follow @debrajsaunders on X. National Interest Editor Flips From Praising Biden as ‘Vigorous’ to Pushing for Michelle Obama to Replace Him

A little more than a year ago, Jacob Heilbrunn, the supposed “realist” editor of the National Interest was touting Joe Biden as a “vigorous leader” and “war president,” deriding critics of the president who called him “confused” and referred to him as “Basement Biden.” Heilbrunn was writing about Biden’s trip to Kyiv, where he supposedly demonstrated “diplomatic savvy” and “real moxie,” and “showed no confusion.” Fast forward to the post-debate world — a debate in which Biden’s cognitive impairment was front and center — and now the “realist” Heilbrunn is touting Michelle Obama as possibly “the ultimate Joe Biden replacement.” Heilbrunn describes Michelle Obama as someone who “has viewed the Biden camp with suspicion and refused to campaign for it.” He claims that Democrats and many independents see Michelle Obama “as a kind of Wonder Woman — a demi-goddess of wisdom and strength who could use a magic lasso the gerontocratic patriarchy surrounding Biden, reuniting the Democratic Party.” Since when do “realists” talk about “magic lassos” and “demi-goddesses?” Gone are Heilbrunn’s references to Biden’s “vigorous” leadership as a war president. Gone is Heilbrunn’s praise of Biden’s “diplomatic savvy.” Now, Heilbrunn writes that the Biden camp’s position that everything is OK is nothing more than “happy talk.” “Biden isn’t doing much to reassure voters,” he writes. There are “mounting doubts about [Biden’s] ability to run a vigorous campaign, let alone govern for the next four years.” Heilbrunn apparently failed to have those doubts last February, and cast aspersions on anyone who did. Heilbrunn isn’t the only anti-Trump commentator to eat his words after the presidential debate. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, who formerly described Biden as “far beyond cogent,” “better than he’s ever been, intellectually, analytically,” and “the best Biden ever,” in post-debate commentary questioned whether Biden was up to the job. The only difference here is that no one ever described Scarborough as a “realist” or, for that matter, an intellectual. Heilbrunn has been called both. Scarborough is a talking head on a network that suffers from Trump Derangement Syndrome on nearly every broadcast. Heilbrunn the “realist,” of course, does not set forth Michelle Obama’s qualifications to be president — because she has none, unless being the wife of a former president is enough; and if that’s enough, why not Dr. Jill Biden? Sure, Obama is smart — graduated from Princeton and Harvard Law, worked at a law firm specializing in intellectual property law, took a political job in Chicago as assistant commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development, founded the Chicago branch of Public Allies, which trained young adults, and then later served as community and external affairs director for the University of Chicago Medical Center. And Heilbrunn notes that Obama has repeatedly stated that she does not want to run for president. Her resume is thinner than her husband’s was in 2008, but perhaps Heilbrunn is counting on the media overlooking that fact the way they did for Barack in 2008. He’s probably right about that. The National Interest has been mostly a voice of reason when it comes to foreign policy analysis since its founding in 1985. It continues to publish insightful essays and articles by realist thinkers. But its current editor is not a realist. His most recent book is an attack on conservatives for their alleged “century-long romance with foreign dictators,” and which accuses Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson, and others of admiring Vladimir Putin. It is clear from his recent about-face on Biden that Heilbrunn will support and promote any challenger to Donald Trump, no matter how unqualified they are. Should the Democrats replace Biden with Kamala Harris, expect Heilbrunn to praise her intellectual capacity and foreign policy vision, realism be damned.
