Senate GOP Not Backing Down From Budget Proposal Fearing Funds for Trump’s Border Security Agenda Could Run Dry

DAILY CALLER NEWS FOUNDATION—Senate Republicans are plowing ahead with their budget proposal despite President Donald Trump throwing his weight behind the House version, arguing their plan will allow federal immigration authorities to execute the president’s border security agenda with full force. As Trump moves to secure the border following his predecessor’s failure to stem the influx of illegal immigration, key administration officials are warning that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is in dire need of resources and staffing to execute the president’s deportation and border security efforts. Both House and Senate Republicans are committed to providing the administration with the necessary resources, but Senate Republicans believe their slimmed-down budget could get additional money to ICE quicker. The Senate’s resolution could pass as early as Friday. Key Trump administration officials have told Senate Republicans that the border security and deportation funding that passage of the resolution will unlock is critical to the president’s agenda. “President Trump’s actions are working. They are working so well that the Trump administration says it is running out of money for deportations,” Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso said on the Senate floor Thursday. “Border Czar Tom Homan told us that. Secretary Noem told us that. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth told us that. Attorney General Pam Bondi told us that. Senate Republicans will act quickly to get the administration the resources they requested and need.” “[G]iven Trump’s significant actions to address illegal immigration, money is running out, and for the administration to keep enforcing the new policies and conducting operations across the country, those resources must be renewed,” Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought reportedly told GOP senators on Feb. 11. Senate Republicans’ budget proposal would give the administration $175 billion in immigration enforcement funding in addition to increasing defense spending and making policy changes to energy production. They plan to take up the president’s tax priorities in a separate budget package later in the year. Trump backed House Speaker Mike Johnson’s budget plan Wednesday to pass all of the president’s tax and spending priorities, including funding for ICE, in a one-bill approach. However, given concerns that Johnson may not have the votes to pass the lower chamber’s budget resolution, going all in on “one big beautiful bill” could be a flawed approach if the House fails to reach a quick agreement. Johnson can afford to lose just one vote assuming all House Democrats vote “no” on advancing the resolution. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has defended moving forward with the upper chamber’s proposal, characterizing it as a backup plan in the event the lower chamber fails to pass its budget resolution. “We will continue to work together in a way that ultimately gets us across the finish line and helps put the president’s agenda in place,” Thune said during a Senate GOP leadership press conference Wednesday. Vice President JD Vance reportedly gave Senate Republicans the green light to continue advancing the upper chamber’s budget resolution, which could receive a vote as early as Friday. Border czar Tom Homan and Vought met with Senate Republicans on Feb. 11 and urged the upper chamber to quickly approve immigration enforcement and border security funding. “Tom Holman said, ‘I am begging you for money’. Russ Vought said that ‘we’re running out of money for ICE. We can’t rob other accounts any longer,’” Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, Senate Budget Committee chairman, said during a leadership press conference on Feb. 11. “To the American people, if you’d like to finish the wall, we need more money to do it. If you want a more modern border, we need money to do it. If you believe that President Trump is right to track down and deport criminal aliens and clean up the mess that’s been created over the last four years, we need more ICE agents.” My dear friend Speaker Johnson is right. Like President Trump, I prefer “one big beautiful bill” that provides funding to implement the Trump border security agenda and a boost in military spending, makes the Trump tax cuts permanent and includes substantial spending reductions.… pic.twitter.com/LcIQeH3dgP— Lindsey Graham (@LindseyGrahamSC) February 10, 2025 “They gave us a summary of what $175 billion would do,” Graham continued. “It would be enough money for four years to implement President Trump’s border agenda, immigration agenda.” Despite the Senate’s version giving the president early wins on his immigration agenda and spurring energy production—two issues central to his campaign—Johnson has called it dead on arrival in the House. House GOP leaders argue Senate Republicans should be following their lead. “President Trump asked for “One, BIG Beautiful Bill” to pass the FULL America First agenda and that’s exactly what the House Budget Committee delivered,” House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Republicans in both chambers should follow Trump’s lead—endorse it, unlock the most consequential legislation in modern history, and Make America Great Again!” The White House and Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment. Trump: Federal Government ‘Should Govern District of Columbia’

THE CENTER SQUARE—President Donald Trump voiced his support for repealing the District of Columbia’s Home Rule Act, citing crime, homelessness and “graffiti.” Trump relayed his stance Wednesday to reporters aboard Air Force One. The president was blunt in his assessment of the district, saying the federal government would run it more effectively. “I think that we should govern the District of Columbia,” Trump said. “It’s so important, the D.C. situation. I think that we should run it strong, run it with law and order, make it absolutely flawless. And I think we should take over Washington, D.C.” Trump echoed claims by Republican lawmakers, who recently introduced legislation in Congress to repeal the Home Rule Act, that the district is plagued by violence and grime. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., introduced the legislation, saying it comes in response to the “mayor and City Council’s failure to prevent violent crime, corruption, and voting by noncitizens.” The duo tied the title of the legislation to Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser. The Bringing Oversight to Washington and Safety to Every Resident Act can be shortened to the BOWSER Act. Trump was also critical of the mayor despite claiming to have a good relationship with her. “I get along great with the mayor, but they’re not doing the job–too much crime, too much graffiti, too many tents on the lawns,” the president said. “There’s magnificent lawns and there’s tents. It’s a sad thing, homeless people all over the place.” Trump said when foreign leaders visit the district, they will be met with homelessness and tents all over the city. “We can’t have that in Washington, D.C.,” he added. “When they come in to see me–like Macron is coming, the prime minister of the U.K. is coming, all these people coming over to see me. We’ll have ultimately President Xi, we’ll have everybody. … You can’t let that happen.” The District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973 was enacted by Congress and ratified by Washington, D.C. voters. The act gave the district residents limited autonomy over local affairs, allowing them to elect local leaders, including mayors and council members. According to Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17 of the U.S. Constitution, Congress has the authority to manage the nation’s capital. In defense of the proposed legislation, Lee underscored crime and corruption as reasons for revoking the act, saying it is a scorn on the nation’s capital. “The corruption, crime, and incompetence of the D.C. government has been an embarrassment to our nation’s capital for decades,” said the senator. “It is long past time that Congress restored the honor and integrity of George Washington to the beautiful city which bears his name.”  The lawmakers cited “a long history of official corruption, federal bribery charges against a council member, armed carjackings, public beatings on public transit, assaults and robberies against congressional staff and members of Congress, soft on crime policies, allowing noncitizens to vote in local elections and regulations causing a high cost of living.” Despite the president’s and lawmakers’ claims, the Metropolitan Police Department reports that crime is decreasing. The violent crime rate dropped 35% between 2023 and 2024, according to the department, while property crimes were down 11% between 2023 and 2024. Overall, the district had a 15% reduction in crime between 2023 and 2024. Originally published by The Center Square. CNN Warns That Only Recognizing Two Sexes May Lead To 'Discrimination'

During Donald Trump’s first term, CNN made a big deal about how an apple is an apple, and even if you call it a banana, it is still an apple. However, on Thursday, the cast of CNN News Central echoed the Washington Post and claimed there are more than two sexes, with health reporter Jacqueline Howard going so far as to say an HHS order affirming the sexual binary could lead to “discrimination.” Co-host Brianna Keilar came out of a commercial warning, “In one of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s first moves as Secretary of Health and Human Services, the agency has released new guidance that gives a narrower definition of sex than the ones used by most scientists.”     If you want people to believe that RFK Jr. is a threat to Americans’ health, playing with the definition of sex is the worst way to go about that. Nevertheless, fellow co-host Boris Sanchez then introduced Howard, “And this language aligns with an executive order that President Trump signed last month and includes new definitions for words like sex, female, woman, male, man, and more. CNN’s Jacqueline Howard joins us now. Jacqueline, walk us through this new guidance.” Howard began by recapping, “Yeah. What I can tell you, this new guidance defines sex as, quote, ‘a person's immutable biological classification as either male or female.’ So, this means this definition cannot change, and a woman is defined as an adult human female and a man as an adult human male. So, that's what the guidance states. That was just recently released.” Rather than being “facts first,” Howard then moved onto the “critics say” genre of journalism, “Now in response, Boris and Brianna, we are hearing from some critics who say the new definitions fail to account for people like those who are intersex. Up to two percent of the U.S. population is born intersex, meaning that their reproductive anatomy does not really fit the male-female binary, and then there's other criticism saying that this perpetuates discrimination against the trans community, and this could lead to discriminatory policies and practices. So we are seeing these responses in the wake of this new guidance being issued.” The first part about intersex people and reproductive anatomy is not quite accurate. Intersex people do not have a third kind of sex organ that violates the male-female dichotomy; rather, their genitals would not match their chromosomes. As Howard was lamenting the supposed effects “against the trans community,” CNN’s chyron put up the banana, “Furthers White House efforts to deny existence of transgender people,” but what do transgender people have to do with anything? Advocates are constantly telling us sex and gender are different things, so if that is true, what is the problem with defining sex as HHS does? Here is a transcript for the February 20 show: CNN News Central 2/20/2025 2:53 PM ET BRIANNA KEILAR: In one of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s first moves as Secretary of Health and Human Services, the agency has released new guidance that gives a narrower definition of sex than the ones used by most scientists. BORIS SANCHEZ: And this language aligns with an executive order that President Trump signed last month and includes new definitions for words like sex, female, woman, male, man, and more. CNN’s Jacqueline Howard joins us now. Jacqueline, walk us through this new guidance. JACQUELINE HOWARD: Yeah. What I can tell you, this new guidance defines sex as, quote, “a person's immutable biological classification as either male or female.” So, this means this definition cannot change and a woman is defined as an adult human female and a man as an adult human male. So, that's what the guidance states. That was just recently released. Now in response, Boris and Brianna, we are hearing from some critics who say the new definitions fail to account for people like those who are intersex. Up to two percent of the U.S. population is born intersex, meaning that their reproductive anatomy does not really fit the male-female binary and then there's other criticism saying that this perpetuates discrimination against the trans community, and this could lead to discriminatory policies and practices. So we are seeing these responses in the wake of this new guidance being issued.

IRS to axe 6,000+ workers amid Trump's cost-cutting sweep

The Internal Revenue Service reportedly notified staff that over 6,000 will be let go before week's end.The decision follows President Donald Trump's directive to slash probationary workers across the federal government.'Abolish the Internal Revenue Service.'An internal email obtained by CBS News revealed that more than 3,500 of those affected are probationary hires in the IRS' Small Business/Self-Employed Division. The email, signed by SBSE Commissioner Lia Colbert and SBSE Deputy Commissioner Maha Williams, noted that employees will be notified by the agency's Human Capital Office on Thursday whether their positions have been impacted. It stated, "While details are still developing, we understand that over 3,500 SB/SE probationary hires will be terminated by the end of this week." Those expected to be terminated "were not deemed as critical to filing season," the correspondence added.A separate email was sent to managers in the IRS' Large Business & International Division, requesting that they work in the office on Thursday and Friday "to support offboarding activities," CBS News reported. The number of affected staffers in that division remains unclear. Before launching the government-wide purge of probationary employees, the Trump administration offered a "deferred resignation" buyout that would have allowed workers to retain their pay and benefits until September 30. More than 75,000 federal workers took the deal. Neither the IRS nor the White House responded to CBS News' request for comment. The cuts follow a visit last week from a Department of Government Efficiency staffer.White House spokesperson Harrison Fields stated, "Waste, fraud, and abuse have been deeply entrenched in our broken system for far too long.""DOGE will continue to shine a light on the fraud they uncover, as the American people deserve to know what their government has been spending their hard-earned tax dollars on," Fields added.Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told Fox News' Jesse Watters on Wednesday that Trump's goal is to "abolish the Internal Revenue Service and let all the outsiders pay.""As the president said, reciprocal tariffs, either you bring yours down or we're going to bring ours up. If we go to their level, it will earn us $700 billion a year to be equal to everybody else," Lutnick stated. "And there goes our deficit. And interest rates come smashing down, and the whole economy explodes higher."Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox.
