Who Was the Worst Roman Emperor in History and Why?

The Roman Empire, a colossal civilization that spanned centuries, was ruled by a succession of emperors. While some were revered for their leadership and wisdom, others are remembered for their cruelty, extravagance, and sheer madness. But among these powerful figures, who was the worst Roman emperor? The Contenders for Rome’s Most Notorious Ruler 1. Tiberius Tiberius, Rome’s second emperor, set a troubling precedent for those who followed. Initially reluctant to take the throne, he eventually retreated to the island of Capri, leaving Rome in the hands of the ambitious Sejanus. Tiberius’s reign was marked by paranoia and purges, with many falling victim to his suspicions. Instgaram | getbybus | Tiberius reluctantly took the throne before retreating to Capri and leaving Rome under Sejanus’s control. 2. Caligula Gaius Julius Caesar Caligula, or simply Caligula, is often regarded as one of the most infamous Roman emperors. His reign, though brief, was marked by cruelty, extravagance, and a penchant for the bizarre. Caligula ascended to the throne in 37 CE following the death of his uncle, Tiberius. Initially, he was hailed as a benevolent ruler. However, his true nature soon revealed itself. He became increasingly erratic and unpredictable, indulging in extravagant spending, ordering arbitrary executions, and even claiming to be a god. One of Caligula’s most infamous acts was his attempt to make his horse, Incitatus, a consul. This absurd gesture was a clear sign of his mental instability and disregard for Roman traditions. Caligula’s reign was cut short in 41 CE when he was assassinated by a group of senators who had grown weary of his tyrannical rule. His death marked the end of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and ushered in a period of instability for the Roman Empire. 3. Caracalla Caracalla, a Roman emperor from the Severan dynasty, is best known for his fratricide. He ruled jointly with his younger brother, Geta, but their relationship was marked by rivalry and mistrust. In 211 CE, Caracalla lured Geta to a meeting and had him assassinated. He then took steps to erase all traces of Geta’s existence from the historical record. Caracalla’s reign was also marked by his extravagant spending and his brutal suppression of revolts. Caracalla’s reign came to an end in 217 CE when he was assassinated by his own Praetorian Guard. His death marked a period of instability and civil war for the Roman Empire. 4. Domitian Domitian, the last emperor of the Flavian dynasty, was a cruel and tyrannical ruler. His reign was marked by paranoia, persecution, and a disregard for the law. Domitian was known for his excessive cruelty. He ordered the execution of countless individuals, including senators, philosophers, and even his own family members. He also indulged in extravagant spending, building grandiose monuments and holding lavish spectacles. Domitian’s reign came to an end in 96 CE when he was assassinated by a group of conspirators. His death marked the beginning of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, a period of relative peace and prosperity for the Roman Empire. 5. Nero Instagram | britishmuseum | Nero is infamously remembered for his involvement in the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE. Nero, another infamous emperor, is best known for his role in the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE. While the exact cause of the fire remains a mystery, many historians believe that Nero was responsible. Nero’s reign was marked by extravagance, cruelty, and a disregard for human life. He indulged in lavish spending, constructing opulent palaces and gardens. He also persecuted Christians, blaming them for the fire and subjecting them to gruesome torture and execution. Nero’s reign came to an end in 68 CE when he was forced to commit suicide to avoid being captured and executed by his enemies. His death marked the beginning of the Year of the Four Emperors, a period of civil war that plunged Rome into chaos. The Legacy of the Worst Roman Emperors The legacy of these emperors is a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked power. Their actions serve as a reminder of the importance of accountability and the need for leaders to be held responsible for their actions. While their reigns were marked by darkness and despair, they also offer valuable lessons for future generations. By studying the mistakes of the past, we can learn to avoid repeating them in the future. Determining who was the worst Roman emperor is a subjective matter, and there are strong arguments to be made for several different candidates. However, Caligula, Nero, and Domitian are undoubtedly among the most notorious figures in Roman history. Their reigns were marked by cruelty, extravagance, and a disregard for human life, and their actions continue to fascinate and horrify us to this day. Tiny Kitten Spots Uncanny Adversary In The Mirror & Goes Into Battle Mode

What happens when Boomer meets Boomer? Spotting himself in a mirror for the first time, this tough little kitten got a bit hissy. One of the commenters called him a “spicy dust bunny,” and we see the resemblance! This tiny little fluff ball does have a bit of aggression. @ozzyandboomer Don’t worry, he achieved consciousness because of this, and he’s doing well. ♬ original sound – Jesse When the kitten first saw the mirror, it stopped and stared at “that other kitty.” It only took a few seconds for the whiny-growl sound to begin. The owner, Jesse, speaks gently, trying to tell Boomer it’s his reflection. The message bounces off the little bundle of aggression. Ears laid back, this little warrior is ready for battle. Image from TikTok. According to Jesse, Boomer achieved consciousness after this brief encounter and is fine. It is good news that the tiny fluff ball did not tear himself asunder in an attempt to quash his vicious opponent. Boomer has an older brother named Ozzie, who is a ginger tabby. Hopefully, with Ozzie’s guidance, this ferocious little warrior will grow into a kind and gentle kitten who can pass a mirror without going into battle mode. Kittens argue with mirrors all the time. It is almost like a necessary rite of passage. Some react calmly, with subdued growling like Boomer. Others respond with extreme violence. Whether your cat responds with violence or playfulness, it is always amusing for humans to watch kittens during their first encounter with a mirror. This compilation video shows the many moods of tiny kittens interacting with themselves in mirrors. @littletigermeowmeow The kitten looks in the mirror. It’s so funny#cute #interesting #animai #cat #funny ♬ original sound – Little Tiger Meow Meow Although most kittens eventually grow accustomed to seeing themselves in the mirror, some never do. Plenty of adult cats display aggression toward their mirror selves. Chalk this behavior trend up to “normal cat activity.” You can find the source of this story’s featured image here and here. When Character Assassination Becomes the Real Thing

If Democrats didn’t believe they’d put former President Donald Trump in an assassin’s crosshairs the first time, they have no excuse for pleading innocent now. Ryan Routh, the suspect who hid in the bushes at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club waiting for his shot at the former president—AK-47-style rifle at the ready, serial number filed off—wasn’t some 20-year-old without a political paper trail, like the first would-be assassin, Thomas Crooks. Routh, 58 and now in custody, “frequently posted about politics” on X and other social media, had a Biden-Harris sticker on his truck, “and exclusively donated to Democratic candidates and causes dating back to 2019,” the New York Post reports. He even featured in a New York Times story last year highlighting his efforts to recruit Afghan soldiers to fight against Russia in Ukraine. Willing to fight in Ukraine himself—although the Ukrainians didn’t want him or his dubious recruits—Routh wanted to be a man of action and was ready to kill for a cause. But if the cause of democracy in Ukraine was worth killing for, what about the safety of democracy right here in America? Routh took both literally and seriously Democrats and progressives who say Trump is a threat to America’s institutions and the rule of law itself. “DEMOCRACY is on the ballot and we cannot lose,” Routh wrote in a tweet to President Joe Biden in April. You can’t lose if your opponent is dead, and if democracy’s in danger, what conclusion does a desperate man of action draw? Instead of moderating their rhetoric, Trump’s critics only doubled down after the first assassination attempt. On July 19, Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., called Trump “an existential danger to our democracy. In the Sept. 10 presidential debate, Vice President Kamala Harris accused Trump of “attacking the foundations of our democracy.” Democrats cut Trump no slack for telling his supporters to protest “peacefully and patriotically” on Jan. 6, 2021, when some of them ran amok and invaded the Capitol. But Trump’s enemies don’t hold themselves to the same standard, when their own apocalyptic language incites a man like Routh to plan political murder. Democrats have tried since 2016 to identify Trump with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. A man with a gun who wants to stop Putin might well think slaying Trump would save lives if, as Democrats and liberals in the media say, Trump is Putin’s catspaw. No one thinks Gavrilo Princip, the man who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, was the cause of World War I by himself. The political climate that led to Princip’s violent act could have and sooner or later would have inspired someone else to do the same thing. The political climate today that inspired Routh encourages others like him. The media have been recklessly uncritical of the incendiary characterizations of Trump that his opponents have trafficked in for years. Listening to the Democrats or watching MSNBC, a terrified citizen might think the country is on the brink of dictatorship, and if ever there was a time for preemptive violence, it must be now. Democrats who denounce political violence while leading their supporters to think freedom is finished if Trump wins aren’t just hypocritical—they’re culpable. Progressives must find ways to argue against Trump without giving ammunition to the paranoid and impulsive. Trump’s life is already in danger, but think about what happens if he wins. On election night, what will people convinced Trump is a dictator do? Right now is the moment to lower the temperature, which should have happened after the former president almost lost his life to an assassin in Butler, Pennsylvania. Yet little changed after that horrific incident—Democrats apparently aren’t examining their consciences now, either. Rachel Vindman, sister-in-law of the Democrats’ nominee for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District—and the wife of Alexander Vindman, a key figure in the first impeachment effort against Trump in 2019— tweeted after Routh’s attempted ambush of Trump: “No ears were harmed.” A rallygoer, Corey Comperatore, was killed in Butler on July 13, and the GOP nominee came within an inch of death: Is this something Democrats like the Vindmans find funny? Too few of the Republican’s most strident critics take seriously the implications of their own words. They act as if Trump’s intemperance excuses greater intemperance on their part. If Trump goes too far—and sometimes he does—Democrats have a duty not to go further still, but to pull back. They haven’t, so Trump remains in would-be assassins’ sights.
