(@CL4WS_OUT) October 1, 2024 There appears to be two companies that are trying open a lithium mine: #1 Piedmont Lithium NBC News in Charolette, North Carolina reports: GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Piedmont Lithium is one step closer to making its mining operation in Gaston County a reality. The company announced Monday that the state approved its mining permit two and a half years after it applied. People in Cherryville have been pushing against the proposed lithium mine for the last few years. However, several people WCNC Charlotte spoke with on Main Street said the project is too divisive of an issue to share their opinions on camera. “I think we’re a silent majority,” one resident, who asked to be anonymous, said. “A lot of people are afraid to say anything about it because they are bringing a lot to the town as far as money.” The resident’s biggest concern is the mine’s impact on the environment. “I just don’t feel like it’s good for us and I think we should take a stance for that,” she said. Several houses in the Cherryville area have signs in their yards that have a large “no” symbol over the words: “Gaston County pit mine.” Piedmont Lithium is promising hundreds of jobs and an economic impact in the billions if the mine is approved. Piedmont Lithium’s CEO Keith Phillips said in a statement on Monday that the mine would help the U.S. speed toward a cleaner future. Bye-bye protestors: # 2 Albemarle CNBC News reports: Top lithium producer Albemarle’s original plans to reopen the Kings Mountain mine in North Carolina as early as late 2026 have been pushed back. Eric Norris, president of energy storage at Albemarle, said progress slowed as the company faces headwinds from a collapse in lithium prices, but the project is moving forward. The resource-rich mine is crucial to setting up a domestic electric-vehicle battery supply chain. Albemarle’s plans to reopen a resource-rich lithium mine in North Carolina will take longer than originally expected as a collapse in lithium prices weighs on the company. Albemarle, a top lithium producer, had originally planned to reopen the Kings Mountain mine as early as late 2026 to increase domestic lithium production and support a U.S. electric-vehicle battery supply chain. “It’s going to be a later date,” Eric Norris, president of energy storage at Albemarle, told CNBC. “It slowed down a bit given the concerns we have, but we are still progressing it forward. It’s not that we’ve stopped it.” Kings Mountain could produce enough material to manufacture 1.2 million electric vehicles annually. The mine sits on one of the world’s richest deposits of spodumene ore, a source of lithium. There is currently only one operational lithium mine in the U.S. in Silver Peak, Nevada, which is owned by Albemarle. The Biden administration has made setting up a battery supply chain, supported by domestic lithium production and processing, a top priority to end dependence on China, which dominates the global market.
