Jan. 6, 2025: Donald Trump’s Presidency is Certified
Today, the 119th Congress certified that President-elect Donald Trump and JD Vance won 312 electoral college votes, securing Trump’s second term in the presidential office.

“Donald J. Trump, of the state of Florida, has received 312 votes. Kamala D. Harris, of the state of California, has received 226 votes,” Vice President Kamala Harris announced with pauses for applause. No objections followed the electoral results.
Harris expressed a firm commitment to a peaceful transition of power and honored her duties as vice president in a video statement before the event. “This duty is a sacred obligation — one I will uphold, guided by love of country, loyalty to our Constitution, and my unwavering faith in the American people,” Harris stated.
Republican members of Congress were ardent in ensuring today’s certification for Trump. Congressmen such as Morgan Griffith and Keith Self took to X to report their attendance, despite the snowy conditions at the Capitol, to confirm Trump’s victory. “This is a constitutional requirement, and there is no snow day for the United States Consitution … I’m proud to be in Washington to certify the election of Donald J. Trump,” Griffith said.
Trump celebrated his certification by posting on TruthSocial: “Congress certifies our great election victory today — a big moment in history. MAGA!”
Tensions about the certification of Trump’s presidency were high due to the Capitol protest that took place four years ago on Jan. 6, 2021, when then-Vice President Mike Pence confirmed Joe Biden’s victory over Trump. Now labeled as the “J6 Insurrection” by Democrats, Sen. Social media users also used the anniversary to reflect on the “Capitol takeover” four years ago. Adam Johnson, also known as “The Lectern Guy” for stealing then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s lectern, reposted the photo which later resulted in a $5,000 fine, 75 days in federal prison, 200 hours of community service, and one year of supervised release for him.

Calls for justice for U.S. Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt resurfaced today, as Judicial Watch filed a $30 million lawsuit against the government on behalf of her husband. On Jan. 6, 2021, Babbitt traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in the Women for America First rally for Trump. Babbit was shot and killed inside the Capitol by Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd.
Ashli Babbitt was an Air Force veteran who served our country for 12+ years and won awards for her service in Iraq.

Trump had stated he plans to pardon Jan. 6 demonstrators in an NBC News Meet the Press interview, saying that he would issue them “very quickly,” yet with some exceptions for demonstrators who acted “radical” or “crazy.” (READ MORE: J6 Pardons: Trump Must Not Go Wobbly)
